MAN WANTED FOR MID-DAY SHOOTING

MEYAKA LONG Aggravated Assault

At approximately 11:35 a.m. today, Jackson police responded to a shooting on Moss Drive. Officers found a 31-year-old Jackson man with non-life threatening injuries. He was transported by ambulance to a local hospital in stable condition.

Based on the investigation, the shooting was not a random act of violence but stems from a dispute between the victim and suspect, identified as Paul Lee, 31, of Jackson.

Police are searching for Lee, described as 6’3”, 200 pounds. Anyone with information on his whereabouts is asked to call the Jackson Police Department at 731-425-8400 or Crime Stoppers 731-424-8477 (TIPS).

Police Charge Man with FirstDegree Murder in Domestic-Related Homicide

Jackson police have charged Antonio James with First-Degree Murder in the shooting death of his mother, Ermateen James.

Around 6 p.m., March 5, 2019, Officers responded to a shooting at 239 Highview Street.

Ermateen James, 52, was found unresponsive, inside her home with a gunshot wound. She was transported to a local hospital where she was pronounced dead.

Investigators developed the victim’s son, Antonio James, 37, of Jackson, as the suspect.

Investigators received a tip about where James could be found. Around 10 p.m., James was located at a home on the 100 block of Tomlin Street in Jackson and taken into custody.

Antonio James remains in custody at the Madison County Jail

Preliminary hearing held for Jackson homicide suspects March 7, 2019ÊWBBJ 7 Eyewitness News Staff JACKSON, Tenn. — Witnesses, including members of Tavoris Bates’ family, testified Thursday in Jackson City Court about the night Bates was shot and killed on Middle Avenue.

“That’s when the gunshots went off. I ran to the door to try and get all the kids, I had about 12 or 13 kids in the house,” said Bates’ mother, Pamela Bates.

“I saw him shooting at my brother, that’s what I saw… I did Billy Moore Corrion Greer what a sane person would do, get out of the way,” testified Michela Fowler.

Corrion Greer and Billy Moore are both charged with first-degree murder in Bates’ death. Witnesses testified in court that Greer and Moore were in a nearby car when the shooting started.

One point of contention was how many shots were fired at the scene. Both the prosecution and the defense tried to Dreads ** Kids Braids ** Cornrows establish where each shot came from and who fired it.

When asked how many shots she heard, Fowler said she did not know exactly, but she knew it was a lot. Pamela Bates said she wasn’t sure either, but estimated around eight or nine.

Witnesses said Greer and Moore were in a fight with Bates and a friend about an hour before the shooting.

During Thursday’s preliminary hearing, witnesses said Greer and Moore came back to the house on Middle Avenue about an hour after that fight, and started GREATER THINGS ARE COMING shooting at Bates.

Hindsight is 20/20 I don’t envy Jackson Madison County Schools Superintendent Eric Jones. Nor do I care to tread one minute in the shoes of School Board Chairman, Kevin Alexander.

Both leaders are seemingly at loggerheads over the future of the school system.

Jones inherited a 10 year plan that includes -among other things- the construction of several new schools. The primary zones targeted for those schools are in the LANA area -on or near the University of Memphis Lambuth Campus- and Ashport Road -replacing Pope Elementary School.

Only after some 11th hour negotiations, did a new school replacing the old Jackson Central Merry High School also became part of the plan -pending funding.

Problem is, that 10 year plan was the ‘Vision’ of the previous school board.

There are five new members now, some of whom don’t feel a kinship to the plan.

Alexander, on the other hand; is tasked with insuring a modicum of fairness and transparency in the school boards approach.

Wed to a body of organized committees, one of which is the long-range planning committee, lead by hawkish newcomer Morris Merriweather, Alexander is the head of a house of nine wives.

On the parameter, both leaders have to balance the interest of local industry, teachers and parents who all share similar needs.

Industry wants a new school in the LANA area to accommodate the population explosion that area is currently experiencing. They also want a workforce that includes students equipped with the technology skills to transition from the classroom to employment upon graduation.

Teachers want smaller classrooms, more pay, cheaper insurance premiums and a guarantee that their pensions are going to be around long enough for retirees to draw on them.

They also want to be evaluated by actual classroom performance rather than solely on test scores.

Parents in south Jackson and Denmark want more Pre-K classrooms made available throughout the county. The current status quo of some 400 seats is simply not enough, especially since the former Malesus Elementary School is sitting there in the area empty, but in relatively good shape.

Parents all across the system want safe learning environments for their children.

Parents want new schools near Pope and the old JCM. The Pope area parents would like a new school to replace the aging Pope Elementary School. They’d also like to see a high school in that area, but they don’t want a “one school fits all situation.”

The JCM area parents want a new JCM; and not some 400 student reasonable facsimile there of. They’d like to see at least a 800 student high school.

Lincoln Elementary School also needs to be replaced, and not by simply putting lipstick on the pig that is Whitehall Elementary.

Just like the Pope parents, JCM parents don’t want a “one school fits all situation,” either.

They don’t want first through sixth graders roaming the halls of those new schools with junior and senior high students.

As is the nature of their positions, both Superintendent Jones and Chairman Alexander have to find a happy medium if the Jackson Madison County School System is going to move forward in a positive and productive manner.

In short, Jones and Alexander have come to some reasonable consensus. They have to be able to advance past the fray and partisan factions for the good of all students, parents, teachers and industry involved.

Hindsight being ‘20/20’ maybe it’s time for everyone involved to try on some new glasses for a better ‘Vision.’

By Bill Marable I made a big mistake last week in reporting on the Angela Nelson - Parks hosted first annual Black History Program sponsored by Bowties and Bookworms.

I called the current Deputy Chief of the Jackson Police Pictured left to right: Pactick Willis, Tyreece Department -Tyree Davis. Miller, Gloria Williamson and Gerry Coleman.

His name is Deputy Chief Tyreece Miller.

Deputy Chief Miller is the fourth in a string of African American Deputy Chiefs for the department.

He follows former Deputy Chiefs Patrick Willis, Gerry (not Gary) Coleman and the historic first African American police officer hired by the Jackson Police Department and first African American Deputy Chief, James N. Cherry, Jr. Gloria Williamson Hunt sister in law of Chief Cherry was presented a medallion by current Deputy Chief Tyreece Miller.

I apologize greatly to the chiefs for my faux pas and am glad to have the opportunity to correct it.

Speaking of corrections, Chief Cherry was promoted to the position in 1988. African American police officers have hit that mark three more times over the last 30 years.

For two of those chiefs, as was with Cherry, attaining the position of Deputy Chief was the pinnacle of their careers with the department.

Meanwhile, the Jackson Police Department has had several transitions to the ‘Top Cop’ from within its ranks, non of whom were African American.

The Chief of the Department is appointed by the Mayor.

The next time one of the candidates for mayor shows up at your church, civic function or backyard picnic ask him or her what they think about that.

State Representative Chris Todd To Carry Legislation On Behalf Of House Leadership, Governor Bill Lee (NASHVILLE, Tenn.) — House Majority Leader William Lamberth (R-Portland) and Assistant Majority Leader Ron Gant (R-Rossville) today announced that State Representative Chris Todd (R-Jackson) has been chosen as a co-prime sponsor to shepherd House Bill 937 through the legislative process on behalf of Republican leadership.
