Birds are singing and animals have started their spring mating season way ahead of time. I am not a scientist but I am an outdoorsman and it just wasn't this way when I was a boy.

Now I'm not trying to determine if man or nature caused climate change but you would have to live in a cage not to notice it.

Warm winter days are beautiful but it changes the natural order of things. Fruit trees risk the chances of bearing because once they bloom and a freeze comes along they will loose all of their fruit.

On the other hand animals mate too early and have their off-springs in winter they stand the chance of not surviving the winter floods.† Which brings up another severe issue "flooding". Because of the warm temps, melting glaciers and rain filled winters most bottoms are flooded all season and kill off many of the local game.

Although I do not have a solution, I am like the Christmas song Grandma got run over by a reindeer, you may not believe in reindeer but for me and Grandma we believe. My grandma has gone on but if she were alive I believe she would believe in climate change

TWO MEN JAILED FOR NOVEMBER 2019 MURDER

JACKSON POLICE INVESTIGATES ACCIDENTAL SHOOTING Jackson Police are investigating an accidental shooting at a local convenience store in south Jackson.

The incident happened at the Raceway gas station on South Highland Saturday afternoon where police confirm a child died as a result of an accidental gun shot wound.

A witness said he saw the childís father arguing with someone else while the child was in the car.

The situation reportedly escalated and the he heard a gun shot. Witnesses also said a child around 5 years old got hold of a weapon and shut himself. Jackson Police day they are not looking for any suspects since it was an accidental shooting and the investigation is ongoing. JPD has not released the child’s name or other names at press time.

WOMAN CHARGED WITH CRIMINAL HOMICIDE FOR FATAL STABBING OF BOYFRIEND 2/1/2020 - Nashville Pamela Phillips, 57, is charged with criminal homicide for stabbing her boyfriend, Christopher Hopkins, last night inside their Lester Avenue apartment.

Phillips called 911 Friday at 10:15 p.m. to report that Hopkins, 56, had been stabbed. When officers arrived, they located Hopkins lying on the bedroom floor with a stab wound to his abdomen.

He died at the scene.

Phillips initially said that she had accidentally stabbed Hopkins but later admitted that she stabbed him after a heated argument.

2/4/2020 Nashville Rhazhaan PittmanValentine, 22, and Tyontez Moore, 20, are jailed without bond following Valentine their arrest late Monday night for the November 2019 murder of Darrelle Groves inside an apartment at the Village on Moore the Green complex on Ed Temple Boulevard.

The investigation, led by Detective Tom Miller, shows that the shooting of Groves, 37, was robbery related.

Moore was shot in the buttocks during the gunfire.

HUMBOLDT MAN SENTENCED TO 15 YEARS ON GUN CHARGE January 31, 2020 -WBBJ 7 Eyewitness News Staff JACKSON, Tenn. ó A Humboldt man has been sentenced to 15 years in federal prison on being a felon in possession of a firearm.

Jermone Lavell McBride, 39, was sentenced Thursday in U.S. District Court, according to a news release from the U.S. Attorneyís office.

The release says McBride was stopped by an undercover agent on U.S. 45 West driving 70 mph in a 55 mph zone in December 2017.

The release says the agent noticed a bag containing marijuana hanging out of McBrideís pocket.

During a search of the vehicle, investigators found a Lorcin .380-caliber pistol, nearly $500 in cash and 15 bags of marijuana, according to the release.

McBride has previous convictions in Kentucky for charges of second-degree robbery, second-degree burglary, second-degree assault, reckless endangerment with a deadly weapon and aggravated assault, the release says.

McBride was sentenced to serve four years of supervised release, in addition to his 15 year sentence.

SUSPECT CHARGED - CONT’D FROM PAGE 1 Jackson police initially responded to a report of shots fired at 218 Lenoir Avenue in east Jackson around 4:15 a.m. on December 17 where officers found Charlene Allbright dead inside the home, and damage to the front window of the home.

Court documents say investigators believe the suspected shooter stood on the porch and fired into the window.

The shooting on Lenior Avenue was reported about 30 minutes after a home on Foxlea Cove was damaged in a shooting, according to court documents.

Court documents say Dione Walker (right) lives in the home on Foxlea Cove, and his mother, Charlene, lived in the home on Lenoir Avenue.

On December 20, Jackson police confirmed Walker was wanted in connection with a shooting just before midnight on Walnut Street. Shartavis Rollins, 26, was killed in that shooting.

Surveillance video shows a white Buick leaving the scene of the shooting on Foxlea Cove, and cameras in the area of Lenoir Avenue show the same vehicle turning onto and leaving the area two minutes later, according to court documents.

Court documents say a phone number associated with Smith was identified from a cell tower nearby at the time of the shooting.

Court documents say Smith told investigators that he was responsible for the shootings.

He is also charged with attempted first-degree murder, employing a firearm during a dangerous felony and reckless endangerment with a deadly weapon.

Current Mayor Scott Conger releases this statement: Shortly after taking office, we began our process of systemically changing the way we do business in the City of Jackson.

Part of that was analyzing all of our contracts and agreements.

We noticed some abnormalities in several areas and decided to request guidance from the Comptrollerís office. They have been working with my administration Mayor Scott Conger as well as members of the city council and former and current City of Jackson employees to help us resolve these issues.

The City is waiting the final report and will share and infirm you as soon as we are informed. The issues resolves around the city’s contract with Waste Management.

At this time there is no statement from the Tennessee Comptrollerís office regarding this investigation. Former Mayor Jerry Gist has not responded to this investigation.

After the comptrollerís office completes their investigation they will share and file a report with the local district attorneys office with a recommendation on whether any officials should be charged with any crimes or misconduct.

Join me in congratulating my dear friend Jewel Lake as the CrimeSEEN Examiner Newspaper ‘Reader of the Week’ CrimeSEEN Jewel is a hostess for the Dodge Stores company located in Jackson at Lexington and South Royal.

She is also enrolled at Examiner News Jackson State Community College in the phlebotomy program.

She is a life member of the Saint James Baptist Church in Jackson and told us she enjoys reading over the mug shots in the CrimeSEEN Examiner weekly. “I get my copy of the newspaper every week and never miss an issue,” said Jewel.

I suppose before we attempt to answer this question we must first determine if we have a glass at all. Much has taken place since my last installment just two weeks ago. If this is a discussion about academics then all indications are that academic performance is on the rise at JMCSS! I would like to take this opportunity to say well done to those at the central office, the teachers, principals, and administrators that are working diligently to continue to raise the bar for all students.

I have had occasion to speak with many students that graduated from JMCSS in the past and they have nothing but good things to say about the quality of education they had received and how they look fondly back on that experience.

“The function of education is to teach one to think intensively and to think critically. Intelligence plus characteróthat is the goal of true education” ~Dr. Martin Luther King Words of wisdom from a transformational leader that led by example to inspire a generation to aspire to change their circumstances and claim their share of the American Dream.

Building a foundation for the future.

The qualifications desired in the superintendent search were met previously. In order to move forward at JMCSS there needs to be a different set of skills necessary in order to oversee and negotiate the building of new schools. In my humble opinion Pope should already be under construction.

Character and integrity are continually on display with the current superintendent. Mr. Washington’s background and experience may be exactly what is required to move forward together at JMCSS. As a leader in the business sector I often maintained that no plan survives contact with action. That does not mean it will not work it simply needs some adjustment.

Economic development is the goal and an investment in education is a way to ensure that local businesses will have access to a strong, vibrant, and resilient workforce. Trust the process! Letís work together to fill the glass to the brim and make our students the toast of the town!

West Tennessee continues to experience increases traffic accidents in the area as reported by the law enforcement agencies. This weeks ìTraffic Spotlight ì was a Friday noon accident near Old Hickory Blvd just south of Wallace Road where a van left the street and crashed into a home near the 400 block of Old Hickory blvd as reported by the Jackson Police Department. Jackson Fire department along with medical center EMS provided assistance to those persons injured in this accident. The Downtown Ricky Brown traffic spotters network reports over 2,189 volunteer traffic spotters in West Tennessee and founder DTRB expresses his heartfelt thanks and appreciation to all those helping their fellow citizens arrive safer in their daily travels. DAR WILL DEDICATE A LITTLE FREE LIBRARY The Jackson-Madison Chapter of National Society Daughters of the American Revolution (NSDAR) will dedicate a Little Free Library at Ayers Children’s Medical Center, 620 Skyline Drive, on Tuesday, February 11, 2020 at 4:00 p.m. The public is invited to attend the dedication.

Senator Lamar Alexander votes to save President Donald Trump Tennessee’s United States Senator Lamar Alexander, who cast a critical vote in the United States Senate trail ìagainst calling for witnesses to testify, said he will support acquitting President Donald Trump because impeachment would allow partisanship to run rampant in the Senate chamber.

Senator Alexander said “I’m going to vote to acquit. I’m very concerned about any action that we could take that would establish a perpetual impeachment in the United States House of Representatives whenever the House was a different political party than the President.”

CONAGRA BRANDS TO EXPAND OPERATIONS IN JACKSON, TN North American food company to add 400 jobs.

January 29, 2020 - Conagra Brands, Inc. announced it is expanding operations in Jackson, Tennessee, today at The Jackson Chamber. This announcement was made in partnership with the Jackson Chamber and Jackson Energy Authority, City of Jackson, Madison County, and Tennessee Valley Authority. Conagra will invest $106 million, adding over 400 jobs to its existing facility on 96 Pinnacle Drive.

“Conagra is pleased to announce a strategic investment and expansion of our presence in Jackson,” said John Goodwin, local plant manager for the company. “We have an outstanding relationship with Team Madison County and we appreciate all the support we have received for this expansion.”

This announcement is the first expansion announcement for Madison County this year and adds to the success of Team Madison County, which, since 2015, has assisted in the creation of nearly 3,300 industrial jobs, totaling more than $1 Billion in investment.

“Conagra Brands began calling Jackson home two years ago with the purchase of Pinnacle Foods. The partnership created between our teams and the decision to expand here reinforces the fact Jackson is one of the country’s premier food processing locations,” says Jackson Chamber’s President/CEO Kyle Spurgeon.

LOCAL BUSINESS UNVEILS A PIECE OF JACKSON HISTORY February 4, 2020 Brittany Kyles - wbbjtv.com JACKSON, Tenn. -February 1 marks 60 years since the sit-ins at a whites only counter in Greensboro, North Carolina.

These sit-ins sparked a movement across the nation, even in downtown Jackson.

“I think I was probably 17 years old at that time,” said Jacksonian and Lane College alumni, Shirlene Mercer.

Mercer was one of four students from Lane to participate in a sit in at the Woolworth lunch counter in downtown Jackson.

Mercer said she was just a kid fighting for her rights.

Old Country Store owners, Clark Shaw and wife, are pictured “Sure I did, I went to jail and with Mercer and Lane College President, Dr. Logan Hampton everything,” said Mercer.

“They felt like I was a criminal of some sort, they thought they had done well by arresting us, we were kids,” said Mercer.

What Mercer remembers the most, is the way some people treated her.

“I remember when white people would spit on us because we were on the picket line, trying to protest segregation, these same folks would kick us, and do things to us, we were kids,” said Mercer.

Kids, now all grown up, Mercer is one of the last Lane students still living who participated in the sit-ins.

“We’re here today to pay homage, and heritage to so many of our guests and others who paved the way for all of us to be here today,” said Old Country Store owner, Clark Shaw.

Tuesday at the Old Country Store, Shaw unveiled three stools. The same stools the Lane College Students sat in during their non-violent protest.

“That meant so much to us, because we didnít have a right to sit there, but I think itís great that the family decided to keep them, a lot of people probably would have thrown them away,” said Mercer.

Shaw also bought more stools. He said he will donate the others to Lane College, the Jackson-Madison County NAACP Chapter, the James Wolfe Music Academy and in more areas of the Old Country Store.

On Saturday February 1 , 2020 at Andrew Jackson Elementary School The #CAP program sponsored by the AKA Sorority held a College Fair to help transition juniors and seniors into college life by providing them with local college options so that they could set up visits and tours and get a head start to the college prep process. The #CAP program provides students with prep for ACT in hopes to rise scores to meet college admissions requirements. # CAP also provide student with writing skills in hopes to help with the essay part of scholarships, the program also offers scholarships for HBCU and other universityís for #CAP participants. ‘It Takes a Village’ LOCAL ACTIVIST WANTS NETWORK OF SERVICES FOR THE CITY’S YOUTH AND YOUNG ADULTS

By Bill Marable Imagine being able to get your child help with his or her homework, after school and on weekends.

Picture a location where a young parent could go to get parenting tips and assistance with daily issues that parents face.

“And even more than that,” says Patricia Hunt, the founder of the Jabez Project II and it’s umbrella component ‘Ms. Pat’s “I Promise Club.”

“I envision a place with all the things you mentioned and more. For instance, a person needing help with social service or medical issues could come to this location for assistance,” said Kylend and Haden Hays pictured with Hunt.

Hunt says that where the ‘village’ aspect can be expanded to include the entire city by instituting a series of “Information Huts.”

“We would be able to point them in the right direction because the location would be like a ‘information hut’,” added Hunt.

But the best thing is, these ‘information huts’ would be set up at various locations throughout the city.

“I would like to make sure that whatever services were being offered to youth and parents on the east side of town would also be available on the north, west and southern sectors of the city.”

A noble notion coming from one who has witnessed -first hand- the struggles of being a parent and trying to get insure that here children and now grandchildren have a safe, educational and productive path to the future.

“I grew up in a time when kids had respect for their elders and teachers were pillars in the neighborhood,” said Hunt as she recalls her early years growing up in Jackson. “We looked up the neighbors just like they were our parents.”

Hence the creation of the Ms. Pat’s “I Promise Club”. Founded in 2007’ by Hunt; the mission of the organization is to “provide an environment for children to receive encouragement and support through the efforts and resources of the community. By providing appropriate activities, the club will facilitate opportunities for positive influence and feedback in a effort to build strong character and encourage productive life-styles.”

Membership in Ms. Pat’s “I Promise Club” comes with expectations.

“There’s a list of things I expect from members, including things like they must be unique and standout, they have to be their very best in school and follow instructions,” said Hunt. “They are also expected to conduct some type of community service.”

One might look at Hunts vision of a Village and see a Herculean task at hand. But Hunt says her vision can be achieved with one simple component; “Community Involvement.”

“People have to realize that things that happen with this city affect us all, whether directly or indirectly,” said Hunt. “So why not get involved and try to offer some assistance to a child or young adult before the situation lands on your doorstep.”

Hunt says getting involved can be something as simple as volunteering to tutor a child after school or to become a mentor to a child for a couple of hours on the weekend.

“We also need to secure locations throughout the city where the children can meet,” said Hunt.

“I like to use the community rooms located within each of the public housing locations to begin. I have approached the administration at Jackson Housing Authority about using the locations and remain hopeful that will oblige us.”
