MEMPHIS, Tenn. — A former Memphis police officer and his co-conspirator were indicted on three counts of civil rights violations, including robbery and kidnapping, U.S. Attorney Michael Dunavant announced Monday.

The indictments are linked to aÊbizarre case in JulyÊin which a man was kidnapped and tortured inside a home near Reese and Appling by armed men wearing police vests. The allegations go back to 2014. An indictment states that officer Sam Blue (right, along with Anthony Davis, took property from suspects in drug cases,Êinjuring, oppressing, threatening, and intimidating them.

After I got back home it would be 8:30 before I could get to the woods so I was undecided about going that late. Ultimately I figured at least it would be enjoyable just being in the Great Outdoors of West Tennessee.

Not only was it enjoyable but it turned out to be some kind of fantastic.

After sitting just long enough to get stiff I got up to stretch and something told me I might just be getting in position for a chance at a deer. About five minutes later a buck came out and walked right past me and I had a great view.

No matter how calm and cool you are, when an 8 point buck is in front of you the heart starts racing and the mind starts wondering.

However, I gathered myself because I had Ray Jones and actually stood up to an 8 Point buck. prepare myself for a harvest opportunity and didn’t know it..

Yes, I successfully took advantage of the opportunity and just so you know “ I don’t think it all just happened that way.” Things lined up to perfectly for me to believe it was anything other than Gods’ blessing for me on what happened to be Kenneth my brothers’ birthday.Ê The next time you are undecided about being in the Great Outdoors of West Tennessee you better go on because it might just be your day.Ê Oh, and take the kids because it might be their day as well.

BROWNSVILLE, Tenn. — Police are looking for two people who are accused of breaking into a pharmacy in Brownsville.

“We were contacted by ADS Security that someone had entered into the pharmacy,” Mel Cox, owner of Hometown Drug Company, said.

The security company called the police.

“They actually came into the pharmacy and were able to get a few items, but nothing much,” Cox said.

He says, thankfully, the most serious drugs were locked up.

“They took [Phenergan and Phenergan DM] and some Robitussin,” he said.

The owner says the suspects also stole money out of the cash register. However, they didn’t make it far. The police soon caught up to them.

The police were able to recover the stolen property from the vehicle. However, they haven’t caught all the suspects.

“They said they were chasing a burglary, and they chased them here and wrecked, and they caught one, but they were still looking for those two other ones,” Tamera Winchester said.

Brownsville police, along with the Haywood County Sheriff’s Office, searched the Stoots Road area well into the morning.

Officials say they are still looking for the two suspects who fled the vehicle. They’re described as black males.

(Memphis, TN) – Late Friday afternoon, Jessica Ferrante got a frantic call from a client. While a divorce was pending, the client’s husband broke into her house and absconded with her ten year old. . .cat.

Springing into action, Jessica Ferrante, with the help of Chelsea Knox and other Rice Divorce Team members, drafted pleadings, notified opposing counsel and appeared before the court first thing Monday morning. When Jessica finished her presentation to the court, the matter was resolved in our client’s favor, and the cat was ordered returned. The court’s final line of inquiry was the proper term for the man who took the woman’s cat. Mrs. Ferrante took the position that it was a “cat burglar.” The court opined in favor of a “catnapper.” By afternoon, the pet was returned.

The 100 Black Men of West Tennessee has announced its 26th annual Scholarship Benefit Gala.

The organization funds the Book Buddies reading program, family mentoring and 21st Century Scholars program.

The program mentors a total of 15 young men of different ages, and organizers say they couldn’t do it without the community’s help.

“We would like to thank the public, the general public, the supporters, the sponsors who continue year after year to support us in this great effort,” chapter presidentÊJerry Woods said.

The organization will hosts its 26th annual gala at 7 p.m. Dec. 28.

DAVIS RUNNING UP THE WINS Tony Davis of Humboldt posted the winning Male Master’s Time: 53:33, Kirsten Ingeborg Sass was the overall Female Winner with a time of 52:28 and the Overall Winner was John Woodman (48:08) at The Over The River 8 Miler in Paris TN., Saturday, December 8.

Jackson Mayoral candidate and state representative Jimmy Eldridge presents Official Tennessee Blue Book to students atÊ Sacred Heart High School with Principal Ann Keyl. Eldridge said “it is always an honor to be invited to our local schools to listen to their ideas and suggestions of our students. The first step in serving others as Mayor is to be concerned, care and listen to the needs of people in the community.”

DANCERS SPREAD HOLIDAY CHEEER Mona Lisa Lanier’s dancers were out Saturday December 8th visiting local nursing homes brings them some Christmas cheer. Santa’s helpers performed several dance routines to some Christmas classics such as The Grinch. Mona Lisa Lanier’s dancers also performed at the Christmas parade in Jackson tn on December 3rd. They won first place for cheer/ dance. Mrs. Lanier says that she is very proud of her girls. Their next performance will be at SAACAs Kwanza Celebration.

Councilman Buchanan is married to Sharon Chatman Buchanan and they have two children, Veronica (Clifton) Love and Derrick Buchanan.Ê They have two grandchildren, Christopher James Love and Jeremiah Love.Ê Councilman Buchanan is a member of New Hope Baptist Church where he serves on the Deacon Board and is a member of the Male Chorus. Mr. Buchanan is a graduate of Jackson Central Merry High School; graduate of Jackson State Community College with an Associate of Science degree; and a graduate of Lane College with a Bachelor of Science degree. Mr. Buchanan is currently employed with the State of Tennessee, Workforce Investment Area 11, as the Resource Center Manager. He was formerly employed as the Program Director of Boys and Girls Club of Jackson.Ê He formerly owned and operated Buchanan’s Exxon Service Station.

Buchanan was elected City Council Representative for District Four in May 1995.

JPD announces 2018 “EMPLOYEE OF THE YEAR.” The Employee of the Month committee for the Jackson Police Department are pleased to announce their selection for 2018 “Employee of the Year.”Ê The Employee of the Month committee selects Officer Joseph Lawley as the Jackson Police Department’s “Employee of the Year.”Ê Officer Lawley was previously selected as September’s Employee of the Month for the Jackson Police Department.

Officer Lawley continues to possess the best of attitudes as an officer of the Jackson Police Department.Ê He genuinely enjoys being a police officer.Ê Officer Lawley is a proactive officer who makes good cases.Ê He is also an excellent Field Training Officer for the Jackson Police Department.Ê He is a patient officer who goes above and beyond in his efforts of explaining information to victims of crimes.Ê Officer Lawley also reaches out to the young people who live in his assigned district.Ê He tries his best to be a good role model for these young people.

Officer Lawley uses his pleasant personality to assist in diffusing situations.Ê Officer Lawley is very dependable.Ê He can be counted on to handle any task given him.Ê He is not afraid to learn new and challenging things within the department.

Jackson Police are pleased to announce Officer Kelly Mason as “Employee of the Month” for the month of December.Ê Officer Mason has seven years of service with the Jackson Police Department.Ê He is currently assigned to the Street Crimes Unit of the Jackson Police Department.

Officer Mason has been a tremendous asset to the Street Crimes Unit as well as the Jackson Police Department.Ê Since his selection to the Street Crimes Unit, Officer Mason has earned two “Letters of Commendation.”Ê His most recent commendation was from the results of a burglary ring operating in the Old Hickory area.Ê Officer Mason turned a “knock and talk” into an Auto Burglary charge against the suspected ringleader.Ê Along with his current assignment in Street Crimes, Officer Mason is also a critical part of the Jackson Police Department’s Aviation Unit as well as the Jackson Police Department’s Hostage Negotiation Unit.Ê Officer Mason is a certified Drug Recognition Expert.Ê Before coming to the Jackson Police Department, Officer Mason served twelve and half years as a Law Enforcement Officer in Florida (Broward County).Ê Officer Mason has twenty-six years of service with the United States Coast Guard.Ê He was recently promoted to the rank of Lieutenant Commander (O4 Grade) in the Coast Guard Reserves.

Officer Mason has a wonderful family.Ê Officer Mason and his wife have been married for twenty-two years and they have two children.Ê When not at work, Officer Mason enjoys spending time with family and riding motorcycles.Ê Officer Mason also enjoys grilling.

Beyond the Badge “Toy Drive” Captain David Thompson of the Jackson Fire Department along with Jana Compton and THP State Trooper Thomas Prather working together at Walmart South raising funds for the annual “Beyond the Badge Toy Drive” for disadvantaged children in the community.

JMCSS CHOSEN TO RECEIVE STATE GRANT FOR SUMMER READING CAMP JACKSON, Tenn. – Reading is fun!Ê That is the message of a summer reading camp the JacksonMadison County School System will host in June of 2019 funded by a grant from the Tennessee Department of Education.Ê JMCSS is among 218 recipients of the Read to be Ready grant.

“One of the main goals of the camp is to increase each student’s interest in reading and to expose them to how reading can be fun and engaging,” explained Mary Myers, Leader of Early Foundations.Ê “Each day of the camp, students will engage in an interactive read-aloud, activities to increase foundational reading skills, independent reading time, partner reading, writing activities and student presentations.”

The camp, scheduled for June 3-28, will be available to 42 rising second and third graders from Lincoln, Alexander and Isaac Lane Elementary Schools who need additional help reaching grade-level in reading.Ê Students will be invited based on need.Ê A partnership with each student’s parents is integral in their success in the Read to be Ready program.Ê Family engagement opportunities will include fun events where parents are shown strategies to read aloud with their students at home.Ê “This program is unique because students will be given up to two books a week to take home and add to their libraries,” added Myers.Ê

SECRETARY OF STATE HARGETT TO AWARD ARCHIVAL GRANT TO JMC PUBLIC LIBRARYÊ NASHVILLE, Tenn. –ÊTennessee Secretary of State Tre Hargett on Wednesday will visit Jackson to award the Jackson-Madison County Library an archival grant to help preserve historical documents.

Secretary Hargett will be joined by Sen. Ed Jackson (RJackson) and Rep. Chris Todd (R- Humboldt) to present a $1,200 federal State Board Programming Grant from the National Historical Publications and Records Commission (NHPRC). The grant funds are distributed through the Tennessee State Library and Archives, a division of the Tennessee Secretary of State’s Office, to support local archive preservation.Ê “The Jackson-Madison County Library houses volumes of important records and documents, preserving the history of the local community and its place in Tennessee history. This grant is an important investment in helping to protect the irreplaceable documents that are invaluable to the county and the state’s history,” Hargett said.
