A heartfelt thank you to all the sponsors, volunteers and every one who helped make the City of Jackson’s Hazardous Household Waste Collection Day a success. A special shoutout to the Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated®, Gamma Alpha Omega and Beta Chi Chapters for coming out and providing volunteering services for the event. Markeston is a tight end for Florida State while Darion is playing wide receiver.

Any time an athlete from our area is on a stage that large all they represent all of West Tennessee for every one to be proud of them. These guys were recruited by Mike Norvell to be a part of his first recruiting class and they are thriving on the 14th ranked 9-3 Florida State football team.

Alex Watkins on the other hand has completed his play ing career at Alabama with 2 National titles, 3 Southeast ern Conference titles and is now assistant coach with the Florida Gators.

To have them meet at mid-field for the climax of the event for a photo on the biggest stage in the state of Florida is something that exceeds expectations and goes beyond football.

Haywood is rich with athletes but when young men reach this level we know that hard work and character plays a big role in the success.

While Tomcat fans love them these are young men who represent all of West Tennessee Outdoors playing football.

CONTINUED BLESSINGS AND FAVOR!

A BIG Thanks to Pastor Ernest Polk and the St. James Family. I had the privilege of sharing the Word last Sunday. The instructions of Apostle Peter admonished us to ADD TO IT! There are some great foundational truths, gifts, characteristics and blessings that we have in/ from God. However, we are not to settle nor get too comfortable with same. It is our responsibili ty and duty to ADD TO IT!

Note: Take time to READ 2 Peter 1:3-7 Yes, you’re doing ‘OK’ with the gifts, knowledge and blessings that God has bestowed upon you, but you know you can DO much more. Therefore, ADD TO IT!

DESTINATION-EXCELLENCE

Now that we have moved past Thanksgiving, it is time for students to think about choices and options they have that pertain to their future. Seniors, grad uation is much closer than you think at this point. Many of the seniors I have spoken with seem to think that they have things in hand and their future is going to follow right along with their current plans.

I had to stop by a Verizon store in Tennessee and met a very knowledgeable and helpful sales associate. He helped me turn in an insurance claim on my current iPhone and arrange to have a replacement sent to my home via FedEx. He also upgraded my Jetpack for my home WiFi and as we waited for respons es from Verizon and Asurion to verify our transactions, we discussed his career path and how he had ended up at Verizon.

The plans he had made upon graduation had not turned out quite the way he had planned and what he thought was a “sure thing” had turned out to be something quite different. He had a scholarship to attend a university in the area to play football and had gotten hurt. This, initially had an adverse impact on his plans for the future and as I explained to him what I did, he encouraged me to continue to mentor and advise students. He had gotten his plans in order and was doing very well, but said he wished he had spoken with someone like me when he graduated and he might have had a better assessment of his options and possibilities. I suspect this young man will go far in life and excel in business or customer service.

SUCCESS TAKES TIME AND EFFORT

I had lunch with my good friend and Jackson Madison County School Board Chairman Mr. Pete Johnson, and we discussed the benefits of education and the options and opportunities available at JMCSS. The tagline at one time was “Trust the Process,” and now it has evolved to; “Best by Any Measure.” I have had the opportunity to witness the evolution and, with cooperation and the right leadership in place, amazing progress has been made and Dr. King makes it a point to recognize students, faculty, and staff as they endeavor to continue the momentum.

I recall when I initially began writing articles for this pa per and have witnessed the positive changes that have taken place over the past three years. It has been my privilege to have been a part of the positivity reflected in the articles these days. Seniors, I urge you to look at the positive ex amples all around you and align yourself for success upon graduation. In my opinion, the path of least resistance too often leads to regret. Ask your parents about the sacrifices they have made to make sure you had the best chance to get a good education, then consider your next steps according ly. If you feel that your support group has underperformed, then break the cycle and be an example to those that come after you that success can come your way too. Prove your worth and be an example of the change you are striving to make.
