Crockett County Sheriff Troye Klyce issued a press release Friday afternoon detailing charges against John Scruggs, former Milan High School band director, who is accused of having an inappropriate relationship with a student.

On 11-16-2018 at 5:03 p.m. officers of the Humboldt Police Department were dispatched to a location on North 18th Ave. in reference to a Domestic Assault with injuries. Upon arrival officers found Jennifer C. Barr deceased.

These youths dedicate a lot of time and develop discipline while learning life skills along the way.Ê Parents, friends and sports fans supported these players all season as it concluded with the Tomcats taking a 16-12 win and picking up the grand trophy.

Congratulations to the players and coaches Donez Richmond, Terry Walker, Aubrey Williams and staff for the dedication and time spent developing these young athletes.Ê This is a league where there are no losers but only winners in the Great Outdoors of West Tennessee.

ACCUSED GUNMAN CHARGED WITH MURDER IN FRIDAY SHOOTING November 19, 2018ÊÊWBBJ 7 Eyewitness News Staff JACKSON, Tenn. — A man now faces a murder charge after a deadly shooting Friday in east Jackson.

Billy Wayne Moore, 51, is charged with first-degree murder in the shooting that took place just before 6:30 p.m. Friday on Middle Avenue, according to court documents.

Moore appeared Monday morning in Jackson City Court.

Police say a witness told them that Moore shot Tavoris Bates, (left) who later died of his injuries at a local hospital, according to an affidavit.

Moore and another man had reportedly come to Middle Avenue and confronted Bates less than an hour before the shooting.

“AÊwitness told police Moore was armed with a handgun, and Moore threatened to shoot Bates,” Judge Blake Anderson said.

Gavontai McDonald Moore and the other man reportedly left the scene in a dark colored truck.

Moore then returned to the area in a light-colored sedan. The witness told police Moore leaned out of the front passenger window and shot Bates, according to court documents.

Moore (right) is currently held at the Madison County Criminal Justice Complex without bond. He is scheduled to return to court Nov. 29.

By Crystal Burns | November 9, 2018 | www.milanmirrorexchange.com Crockett County Sheriff Troye Klyce issued a press release Friday afternoon detailing charges against John Scruggs, former Milan High School band director, who is accused of having an inappropriate relationship with a student.

The release states that the Crockett County Sheriff’s Office has been involved in a multi-jurisdictional investigation of Scruggs that focused on the allegations of inappropriate sexual conduct involving a minor.

Sheriff’s Office investigators have concluded probable cause to be present and criminal complaints have been filed. Warrants include three counts of sexual battery by an authority figure, two counts of statutory rape by an authority figure, andÊtwo counts of rape.

The release also states that Scruggs and his defense counsel have arranged his surrender.

Scruggs has had similar charges filed against him in Milan and Gibson Co. He is charged with sexual battery by an authority figure in Milan and four counts of statutory rape by an authority figure in Gibson Co.

Assistant professor charged with statutory rape

John Walter Overcash NOVEMBER 16, 2018ÊÊWBBJ 7 EYEWITNESS NEWS STAFF MARTIN, Tenn. — A Martin man is charged with statutory rape by an authority figure after an investigation by the Weakley County Sheriff’s Office.

The Sheriff’s Office said in a news release Friday that 32-year-old John Walter Overcash, of Martin, was arrested Wednesday on the charge.

Court documents say Overcash admitted to sexually assaulting a juvenile.

The University of Tennessee Martin confirmed Friday that Overcash is an assistant professor of chemistry at the university. The university says Overcash has been placed on administrative leave with pay Thursday, pending the outcome of the investigation.

Overcash was arraigned in Weakley County General Sessions Court Thursday. His bond is set at $25,000.

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Three people were taken into custody after they allegedly threatened to kill three minors with whom they had had sexual contact with on multiple occasions.

On November 18, officers responded to an aggravated assault at 2800 Thomas Street. That’s where they were met by three females who all stated they had been sitting inside a 2005 Chevrolet Malibu when Tiana Taylor, Donnell Campbell and Jonathan Hines pulled guns on them. The suspects threatened to kill them before kicking them out.

All three suspects were pulled over during a traffic stop and taken into custody without incident.

While investigating the incident, officers discovered that all three of their suspects were involved in separate sexual relationships with the victims. All of the victims were minors, police said.

WANTED MILAN, Tenn. — Police say they are searching for a man in connection with the theft of a truck.

This is a conference attended by both 4-year and 2-year colleges from across the state. Natalie was the only community college student whose paper was accepted for presentation at the conference.

Natalie came to JSCC as a graduate of Madison Academic Magnet High School in Jackson.

Representative Chris Todd Urges Congress To Provide Immediate Financial Support To Our Student Veterans (NASHVILLE, Tenn.) —ÊState Representative Chris Todd (R-Humboldt)Êrecently offered his strong support for Tennessee’s student veterans by signing onto a letter written by Tennessee House and Senate leaders urgingÊU.S. Congressman Phil Roe (R-Tennessee)Êand the House Committee on Veterans Affairs to immediately address funding allocation issues related to the Harry W. Colmery Veterans Assistance Act of 2017.

The problems are a direct result of information technology and programing flaws within the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs and have resulted in allocation delays ranging anywhere from 6-8 weeks. These issues are negatively impacting more than 9,000 Tennessee veterans, as well as the state’s colleges and universities.

In fact, many schools are utilizing zero percent interest loans and tuition deferment in efforts to ensure our student veterans receive the financial support they need to pursue their education. As a result, institutional funds at several area colleges and universities have been heavily drawn down, creating budget concerns at these academic institutions.

Todd and his Republican colleagues are hopeful for an immediate resolution to these issues so our brave heroes receive the financial assistance they have so proudly earned Êthrough their service to our state and nation.
