Jackson Man Sentenced to 15 13 YEAR OLD BLACK Years for Possession with Intent to MALE ATTACKED BY Distribute Heroin and Fentanyl Jackson, TN –ÊBrandy Kentia Steed, a/k/a “STEED,” 40, has been sentenced to 180 months imprisonment on federal charges of possession with intent to distribute heroin and possession with intent to distribute fentanyl. U.S. Attorney, D. Michael Dunavant announced the sentence today. According to information presented in court, on August 24, 2017, during an undercover investigation, Jackson Police Department investigators arranged to purchase 1.63 grams of heroin from STEED. Later that same day, investigators executed a search warrant at STEED’s residence, in the Jackson area. During the search, STEED informed the investigators that the narcotics were hidden in a Chevrolet Suburban parked outside his residence. Recovered from the Suburban were multiple bags of suspected heroin and crack cocaine. However, lab analysis later determined that the bags contained 30.42 grams of fentanyl and 5.63 grams of crack cocaine. STEED provided a statement to investigators admitting that all the items in the vehicle belonged to him. STEED also had multiple prior arrests and convictions for evading arrest, resisting arrest and probation violations.
Brownsville police seek person of interest in robbery November 5, 2019ÊÊWBBJ 7 Eyewitness News Staff BROWNSVILLE, Tenn. — Brownsville police are asking for information on an October 30 robbery. Police say the suspect is believed to be a black man between 18 and 30 years old. He is about 5-feet, 5inches tall with a thin build. The Brownsville Police Department and Haywood County Crime Stoppers is asking for any information leading to the identification and location of this person of interest. Anyone with information is asked to call the Brownsville Police Department at (731) 772-1260 or Crime Stoppers at (731) 772-2274.

After an investigation and a tip from the public a warrant for Aggravated Assault has been obtained on Robin Rhea Panzke (AKA Rivas) a 34-year-old white female from Humboldt. We want to thank the public for their assistance in this case. This shows how cooperation between the Police and the citizens can solve crimes.

STORE CLERK SENTENCED FOR KILLING TEEN WHO TOOK BEER MEMPHIS, Tenn. — A North Memphis store clerk who chased and killed a teen who had shoplifted a beer was sentenced Thursday to 22 years in prison without the possibility of parole, said Shelby County Dist. Atty. Gen. Amy Weirich. Defendant Anwar Ghazali, 30, who was convicted by a jury in August of second-degree murder in the fatal shooting 17-year-old Dorian Harris last year was sentenced by Criminal Court Judge W. Mark Ward. The shooting occurred around 10 p.m. on March 29, 2018, at the Top Stop Shop at 1127 Springdale where Harris entered the store, grabbed a beer from the cooler and left the store without paying. Ghazali pulled a 40-cal. handgun from under the counter and ran out of the store in pursuit of Harris. The clerk fired several shots and returned to the store without calling police.
NASHVILLE WOMAN ACCUSED OF RAPING 12-YEAR-OLD BOY SHE WAS BABYSITTING NASHVILLE, Tenn.—A Nashville woman has been arrested and charged in the alleged rape of a 12-year-old boy. According to Metro Nashville Police records, 20-year-old Demetriona Harper was babysitting the boy at a Goodlettsville apartment complex when the boy went into his room to play a video game. Harper allegedly went into the bedroom and began touching the boy’s groin and forced him to touch her. She then pulled his pants down and had sexual intercourse with the boy according to the arrest affidavit.

RALEIGH, N.C. (WTVD) — A Raleigh man is accused of grabbing a 14-year-old girl from a gated community and trying to kidnap her as she walked to school. Daron Fabulous Oliver, 35, was charged with first-degree kidnapping. Police said he tried to take the teen on October 1 in the 4600 block of Millbrook Green Drive, which is off Capital Boulevard. A 911 caller told the dispatcher that “he started like, calling for her, so she started walking and he started walking fast behind her. So she said she started walking faster away from him and he ran up to her and tried to grab her wrist. She turned around and was like ‘can you let me go?’ and he kept trying to hold her.” The scuffle happened at about 6 a.m. The address is a gated apartment complex with multiple ‘No Trespassing’ signs.

Madison County Commissioners Cup presented to North Side High School Indians The cold didn’t keep away the crowds under the Friday night lights at Northside High School.Ê The Hoka Hey crowd was alive and well at the reservation as the north side high school Indians took on the South SideÊ high school Hawks . I’m Friday nights game the cross town rivals played for the second annual Madison County Commissioners Cup. During the game Madison County Commissioners Jeff Wall, Jay Bush and William Martin represented the county legislative body.Ê Commissioner Wall along with assistant principal Dione Springfield, retrieved the CUP from the LifeTeam AirEvac helicopter that delivered the Cup at the start of the game. The Commissioner’s Cup was an idea created by South Side broadcast/journalism teacher Greg Hammond. Hammond explains its purpose “in an effort to spur civic pride education and awareness” the Madison County Commission sponsors a rivalry trophy for the football series between North Side, South Side and Liberty High Schools. “ After winning the cup in 2018 the Cup certainly served its intended purpose by culminating that civic pride. At the completion of the game , Commissioner Wall presented North Side quarterback Cameron Jones the most valuable player award sponsored by the Tennessee Army National Guard.Ê Commissioner Wall then presented the Commissioner’s Cup to the Indians for the second year in a row as the Indians defeated the South Side Hawks 4221.Ê Congratulations to North Side Indians!

SCHOOL BOARD, LEGISLATORS ENGAGE IN VERBAL FIST-A-CUFFS By Bill Marable Ê ÊContention, strife, mistrust and more have been the mantra of Jackson-Madison County School Board meetings since Morris Merriweather was elected to serve the citizens of District 6. Ê ÊMonday’s meeting with State Legislators was no different. Ê ÊState Senator Ed Jackson (27th), and State Representatives Johnny Shaw (80th) and Chris Todd (73rd) sat down for a face -to- face question and answer session with By Bill Marable School Board members Monday in Jackson. Ê ÊThe ill fated meeting was doomed from its onset. Ê ÊAccording to Merriweather, school board members were asked to submit their questions to the legislators prior to the meeting so that they might be able to prep for their answers.Ê This did not sit well with Merriweather. Ê Ê”I would rather we ask questions and they answer them without having to prep for them in advance,” said Merriweather in a telephone interview after the meeting. Ê ÊA particular bone of contention for Merriweather and Doris Black was the recent Bill turned Law which many deem “The Merriweather Law”. Ê ÊThe law, signed by Governor Bill Lee in May of this year, SB0185 Education - As enacted, creates a process for voters in Madison County to remove a local board of education member who is elected or appointed to fill a vacancy. Although popular consensus has it that the law was originated to target Merriweather, the fact that he represents a majority African American voting district shielded him. Ê ÊBlack, however; who represents District 4 was not as fortunate.Ê A petition was circulated and after several attempts ganged enough signatures to demand a recall election. Ê Ê”I need everyone’s help!”, said Black in a statement released Monday after the meeting. “I think most of my constituents see this recall for what it is, a vendettaÊsmear campaign, organizedÊby former school board member David Cliff.Ê Mr. Cliff was on the school board for 24 years. During that time,Êour schools declined and five schools were closed creating overcrowding. He has been at Pope Elementary School’s PTO meetingsÊand on the radio bad mouthing me. Ê ÊMy constituents know that I still believe in reducing overcrowding, a new Pope Elementary and High School on the By-pass, a new state of the arts JCM and Madison High School.Ê I have not wavered since my campaign.” Ê ÊAccording to the school board website “Dorothy “Doris” Black is a retired public school teacher with over 38 years experience. Her background includes classroom teaching, teacher coaching and mentoring, new teacher Induction, and administration. She was voted “Teacher Of The Year” twice during her career serving in Arkansas and Wisconsin.Ê Ê ÊIn Monday’s meeting, Merriweather and Black were adamant that Sen. Jackson and Rep. Todd were only doing the bidding of a select few constituents and the law they had passed was unconstitutional. Ê ÊRep. Johnny Shaw, even though he voted for the bill to become law, told the body that he believes it was unconstitutional and is headed for a battle in court. Ê ÊMeanwhile, Sen. Jackson and Rep. Todd, displaying a strong sense of temerity, pushed back at Shaw, Merriweather and Black. Ê ÊAfter nearly an hour and a half of sometimes heated discussion, the lawmakers suggested moving on to other topics, at which point Merriweather excused himself from the meeting.

Public Nest-Egg found growing in State Coffers Ê ÊState lawmakers are on high alert now that $732 million earmarked for “Family Assistance” has been discovered in a bank gathering dust and accruing interest. The report by Beacon Center of Tennessee found the state receives $190.9 million, annually, from the federal government as part of the Temporary Assistance for Needy Families program. Only $71.1 million was spent in the fiscal year 2019, leaving a surplus balance of $732.7 million. However, Governor Bill Lee says ‘not so fast.’Ê The surplus money is for a “rainy day” and according to Gov. Lee, the skies are all sunny in Tennessee. The governor’s comments come in contrast to those in the business of providing assistance to needy families. Although Gov. Lee claims the employment level has increased to the point that fewer people are requesting assistance, organizations like Second Harvest Food Bank beg to differ. Rhonda Chafin, executive director of Second Harvest Food Bank, says giving to food banks is down nationwide and organizations like hers need help.Ê “(That money is) sitting there when families are sitting in their homes with not enough food to put on their tables,” Chafin said. “Sure, it’s a rainy day fund and we’ve always got to look out for that but this being said, it’s raining pretty hard in our rural communities,” said state Rep. John Crawford (R-Kingsport). (wcyb.com/news). According to a 2018 report by talkpoverty.org, Tennessee has nearly 1 million citizens living at or below the national poverty level. Madison County has a 20 percent poverty rate.Ê Haywood County has a 21.1 percent poverty rate.Ê Gibson and Crockett Counties are at 18.7 and 18.9. I could go on and on, but the poverty numbers are similar for rural counties all across the state. Lee changed course on Monday by telling reporters he was open to using the surplus on a variety of options to continue helping Tennessee’s poor. His announcement was coupled with news that the state was planning on spending up to $70 million of the surplus on grant awards to nonprofits throughout the state starting in January. I went to the Tennessee Department of Human Services website and “Discovered” clear and concise instructions for using the funds. “Families First, the state’s Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF) program, is a workforce development and employment program. The Families First program emphasizes work, training, and personal responsibility. It is temporary and has a primary focus on gaining self-sufficiency through employment. The Families First program helps participants reach this goal by providing temporary cash assistance, transportation, child care assistance, educational supports, job training, employment activities, and other support services.” Having spoken with professionals who have a vested interest in what’s going to happen with the funds, here are a few suggestions for the committee to consider. First, lets look at four areas all centered around the family unit; Education, Title I, Social Workers and Students. Please allow me to elaborate . . . next week. Peace!

Jackson, Tenn. – Nationally syndicated radio personality and standup comedian Rickey Smiley will be at Jackson State Community College Friday, November 8. Smiley is scheduled to be at the Student Center from 10:30 a.m. to noon for a meetand-greet event with the public. Smiley will be broadcasting his program from Thomas Media’s Hot 96 and 96 Kix stations in downtown Jackson. As a primary sponsor, JSCC will host the public event on its campus. Brian Gann, JSCC vice president of student services, said that this unique opportunity was presented to the college a week ago. “Understanding the popularity of Mr. Smiley, we immediately seized the opportunity to host this event.” Gann went on to say that this is a great opportunity for JSCC to make a positive connection within the community. “We welcome anyone who would like to meet Mr. Smiley and learn more about JSCC,” Gann said. “Our staff will be on hand to talk with anyone interested in learning more about opportunities to improve their lives through education at Jackson State.”

the top five percent of all schools in the state. The 2018-19 data indicates that JacksonMadison County Schools (JMCSS) has two reward schools: Community Montessori and Madison Academic. Both schools have had two years of level five status and are proud to have achieved this consistency which is an incredible testament to the hard work of students and staff. “As a classroom teacher I feel that the curriculum, collaboration between teachers, and quality support from our school administration were all factors that impacted the improvements that we made that, in turn, increased the quality of instruction and the growth of our students,” stated Ontonio Reedy, Math and Science teacher at Community Montessori. “As we incorporated the district curriculum with our Montessori philosophy, collaboration and support was vital. As teachers, we could not have accomplished this individually. Together we studied the new curriculum in order to adapt and correlate it to our Montessori environment and our school administration provided the help and support to do that.” It is evident that staff at both schools do not rest on their accomplishments, but continue to raise the bar of expectations in order to refine their work and set higher goals for themselves and for their students. Additionally, this type of achievement only occurs with all stakeholders working together for a common goal. Molly Coffman, English teacher at Madison Academic states that this, “affirms that our hard work and commitment as a community produces tangible results, paving the way for student success...in college and beyond.”
COUNCILMAN ERNEST BROOKS APPLAUDS INSTAGRAM FOR NEW ANTI-BULLYING FEATURE JACKSON, TN – Jackson City Councilman Ernest Brooks, District Three, applauds the efforts of the social media giant Instagram to curtail cyberbullying on their platform. Brooks is the founder and chair of the Jackson Do the Write Thing “Challenge”, a youth violence prevention program for middle school students. Students who accept the “challenge” write about the causes, effects and solutions to youth violence and make personal commitments to say no to violence in their homes, schools and communities. According to Lisa Cone, National Program Director of the Do the Write Thing Challenge, “Over the years, more and more students are writing about their experiences with cyberbullying – which many times leads to violence, or, at its worse - suicide.”Ê Studies show 76 percent of American teens ages 13 to 17 use Instagram and 25 percent said they have experienced repeated cyberbullying on their cell phones or the internet, according to U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. “With that power and that popularity comes enormous responsibility to address the issue” of cyberbullying, said Brooks. Instagram has rolled out a new feature that will allow users to secretly block bullies from commenting on their posts. The new feature, called RESTRICT, lets users block comments on their posts from specific users without the user knowing. The blocked user will still see their comment on a user’s post, but it will not be visible to anyone else.Ê The announcement was made in October, as a nod to National Bullying Prevention Month. “Bullying is a complex issue, and we know that young people face a disproportionate amount of online bullying but are reluctant to report or block peers who bully them,” Instagram said in a statement announcing the feature. “RESTRICT is designed to empower you to quietly protect your account while still keeping an eye on a bully.” According to Councilman Brooks, “While I welcome the RESTRICT feature as a step in the right direction, we ultimately have to teach our young people compassion, empathy and to love one another”.
