TO STUDENTS ABOUT BULLYING

Jackson Madison County regional Health Department health educators visited Arlington Elementary School in Jackson, TN last week talking students about #bullying! One in five high school students in the U.S. reported being bullied on school property in the last year, according to the CDC. “The amount of wealth loss could be in the trillions of dollars,” Lucas remarked. “We’ve had administration after administration, president after president, and Congress after Congress does nothing. Secretary Vilsack was a disaster even when he worked under President Obama, who wasn’t good to us.”

COMMUNITY CAMPOUT AND POETRY CELEBRATED AT SEGREGATION ERA SCHOOLS

Both the Douglass Community near Stanton in Haywood County and the Hurt’s Chapel Community in East Madison County hosted events last weekend to inspire others to cel ebrate and remember the African American heritage of both communities.

Last Friday, the Concerned Citizens of Douglass Commu nity (CCDC) hosted a Bonfire and Community Campout.

Beverly Cannon-Latimore (left), a member of the CCDC said there is an enormous amount of history in the Douglass Community in Stanton, TN. And in addition to preserving that history, the CCDC also serves as a hub for community support.

“Our community center is actually our old elementary school, The Douglass School,” said Cannon-Latimore. “The second building on the campus is our Heritage Gallery that houses a lot of historical artifacts from the Douglass Community.”

Friday was their first Community Bonfire and Campout, added Can non-Latimore. Residents -past and present- pitched their tents, lit their grills, and congregated throughout the night.

At sunrise, many prepared campsite breakfasts while others partook of the coffee, hot chocolate, and other treats provided by the CCDC.

THE HAY IS IN THE BARN

Everything is making preparations for winter in its’ own way while going about daily routines. The bear has to store up food for a long winter of hibernation fishing and hustling other aquatic species.

It appears he is enjoying himself while all along putting the hay in the barn. The muskrats and moles you see tearing up your yard in storing up for the winter at your expense while trying to get the hay in the barn.

Ants travel extremely long distances carrying a bread crumb to the storge destination for the entire ant colony making sure the hay is in the barn.

Livestock, equine and many other animals require hay to be stored in the barn for the winter.

Automobiles need an extra coat of wax to get through the winter season and when it is done the hay is in the barn.

When the game was sewed up and the band was playing I’m so glad I went to TSU Legendary Coch Big John Merritt would say “The Hay Is The Barn” meaning success. The job has been completed and it is time to celebrate the performance.

Around West Tennessee there is plenty to do as we tran sition from fall to winter that when we are done we will kick back and say the hay is in the barn.

New Pope School discussed$48 million price tag

The Madison County Commission held its regular agenda review meeting Thursday afternoon.

There were many topics discussed, however the budget for the new Pope School was most notable.

Currently the budget is $48 million dollars. It’s $44 million to build the new school building, with an additional $4 million to furnish it.

$36 million comes from a government bond issue, while the other $12 million comes from the American Rescue Plan Act that was designated to be used for school constructions.

“We’re into the early stages right now, the traffic studies are being completed, Orcut Winslow was the architect and engineer that’s been hired for that project,” said Madison County Finance

Director Karen Bell (left). “Hinson Construction will be doing the building construction of it.”

County Officials say construction of the Pope School will hopefully begin by Spring or early Summer of 2023.

Russell is a loyal customer and reader of the CSE and picks up his newspaper every Thursday at his neighbor hood convenience store.

“I appreciate the CSE sharing area church and commu nity news, the local daily newspaper is almost non exis tent. We spend our money with locally owned businesses who have our best interest at heart,” said Morris.

Russell is semi retired and is an Army Veteran who served with the 101st Airborne Division. He retired after more than 20 years with Greyhound Bus Lines.

He’s a member of New Saint Luke MB Church in Jack son. His daughter is a United States Air Force veteran with over 28 years service.

Russell has over 30 years experience in the transpor tation service industry and still enjoys driving for the public part time.

“Shame on you Dairy Queen!”

Just an FYI for anybody that goes to the DQ on Vann Dr. A friend of mine left her debit card last week and before she could get it back the girl working there had spent a couple hundred dollars. They watched it on the cameras where the girl took a pic with her phone and then put it in her pocket. My friend GAVE her the opportunity to return the money and she wouldn’t file a report. The girl still kept lying so the police got involved and the district mngr assured her that the girl would be fired. Today the girl paid her back BUT SHES STILL WORKING THERE. She wouldn’t have paid it back if the police hadn’t been involved. The GM confirmed that she was written up but still employed there. So if you go to the DQ on vann drive don’t use your card. Shame on you Dairy Queen!!! She should be fired ASAP before she does thisme off again. - Stephanie Douglas

I went to McDonald’s this morning. I went to the counter and the manager said use the kiosk because I not going to run back and forth to take orders. I been trying so hard to be kind even though some people are rude. I ordered from the kiosk and got my receipt. A lady came in the manager was just as snappy to her as she was to me. The manager told her to use the kiosk, she stated that she didn’t have her glasses and the manager told her to go to the drive thru. I told her that I was off today and I would help her with her order. I see why these restaurants are short of people. They don’t know how to talk to people. If she talked to me that way, she is horrible to the employees. I am getting tired of ringing up my groceries and my food and not getting paid. I’m just venting. “Do better JCT!”

I’m not sure what I need to do but I’m know I’m sick and tired of this school JCT period this school year already! For one my 7th grade son was switched to virtual and since we made that switch me and my wife have had to hound these folks for 3 weeks straight just for the proper information and books etc for him. They are very unorganized and slow when it comes to academics which I thought was supposed to be important. Secondly my 4th grader has a teacher by the name of Ms. Woods who apparently wants to punish my son for accidently knocking a decoration off of her desk as he was putting his jacket on. He picked up the items and placed them back and went to his next class. She goes to the next class and asks who knocked it over and he told her it was him and apologized and she was trying to make him write 5 code of conducts as punishment for an accident?! So we told our son to not write them and to tell her to call us. She tells our son that she isn’t calling us for everything and to just stay off he desk in a smart manner. I’m going to say this if you don’t want someone talking to your or your children that way then don’t do it to mine because we don’t play about our kids. This school will hound you for any and everything your child does yet doesn’t handle business on their end in a prompt manner. Do better JCT! Multi-Agency Operation Results in 17 Arrests

JACKSON – Multiple law enforcement agencies joined together to saturate the streets of Jackson on Thursday as part of an operation focusing on illegal drug and gang activity in the city. Seventeen individuals were taken into custody on charges that included first degree murder, indecent exposure, drug possession, and violation of probation. Additionally, three guns, cash, and various illegal drugs – including fentanyl, cocaine, marijuana, and hydroco done – were seized. Three search warrants were executed, and 38 home compliance checks were completed.

The saturation operation was conducted in response to crime linked to gang and drug activity in the Jackson area. Approximately 100 law enforcement officers from 13 local, state, and federal agencies participated: Tennessee Bu reau of Investigation, Jackson Police Department, Madison County Sheriff’s Office, Jackson-Madison County Metro Narcotics Unit, Tennessee Highway Patrol, Tennessee Department of Corrections, 24th Judicial Drug Task Force, West Tennessee Violent Crimes Drug Task Force, Two Rivers Violent Fugi tive Task Force – US Marshals, Homeland Security Investigations, Hum boldt Police Department, Trenton Police Department, and Haywood County Sheriff’s Office.

Joins Shelby County District Attorney’s Office

October 18, 2022 - Fiveterm Jackson City Coun cilman, District Three, Ernest Brooks, II, resigned yesterday from his city council seat in order to accept a position with the Shelby County District At torney General’s Office. He will serve as the Associate Deputy District Attorney/ Senior Policy Advisor for the 30th Judicial District at Memphis. Brooks was one of six new hires that were announced on Friday, October 14, 2022.

Brooks began his legal career in the District At torney’s Office in Madison County and spent many years in private practice in the areas of criminal defense, juvenile advocacy, municipal law, higher education law and corporate law. He was recently elected as Secretary-Treasurer of the Tennessee Municipal Attorney’s Association and re-elected to the Tennessee Democratic Executive Committee. Elected in 2003, Councilman Brooks was an accomplished orator and skilled tactician whose leadership guided the city in reaching many milestones – rebuilding after the 2003 and 2011 tornadoes, creation of redevelopment districts 1 and 2, saving Lambuth College and creating a four-year state institution, and voting to reopen and refurbish Jackson-Central Merry High School and build a new Madison Academic High School. He also served as Vice-Mayor, Treasurer and chaired many boards and commissions. Brooks was a member of the National League of Cities, Tennessee Municipal League and Democratic Municipal Officials.

In a letter to Mayor Scott Conger, Brooks stated, “one of the highlights of my tenure on the council was leading the redistricting effort in order to create a more fair and eq uitable scheme that recognized the (racial) demographic growth of Jackson. However, I am most proud of my work against youth violence as chair of the Jackson, Tennessee “Do the Write Thing” National Youth Anti-Violence Program”.

District Attorney General Steve Mulroy defeated the incumbent, Amy Weirich, with more than 55% of the vote and took office on September 1, 2022. “I’m pleased that I hired (an) experienced, qualified, diverse group of attorneys who share my vision for criminal justice reform. That was the goal always. I’m pleased that so far I’ve been able to achieve it”, Mulroy said.

“It will be a privilege to serve the people of Shelby County as their Associate Deputy District Attorney and Senior Policy Advisor,” Brooks said. “I look forward to working with the dedicated public servants in District Attorney’s office to represent the victims of crime. I thank General Mulroy for entrusting me with this responsibility”.

CONROE, Texas (KTRK) -- A former Oak Ridge High School science teacher is convicted after being accused of groom ing a student to have an inappropriate sexual rela tionship with her, records show.

Bonnie Rose Guess-Ma zock, 36, pleaded guilty to sexual assault of a child on July 13 and was sentenced to 10 years in prison on Oct. 3, according to court documents.

National Arts and Humanities Month is an opportunity for everyone to help change public perception and promote the crucial role of the arts and humanities in promoting individual wellbeing, addressing trauma, connecting cultures, highlighting inequities, and making our communities healthier and stronger.

On October 1st, Scott Conger, Mayor of the City of Jackson, and AJ Massey, Mayor of Madison County, proclaimed the month of October as National Arts and Humanities Month, as well as Global Diversity Awareness Month, both of which are essential to the cultural makeup of the community.

Nationwide, the arts and humanities make up a $877 billion industry and support 4.6 million jobs, representing 4.2% of the nation’s economy. The arts and humanities embody much of humankind’s wisdom, intellect, and imagination, and enrich the lives of every one in America. Locally, the arts and culture nonprofit sector generates $4.7 million in economic activity annually in the City of Jackson alone.

African-American Literature Book Club Meeting

COMMUNITY CAMPOUT AND POETRY CELEBRATED

Cannon-Latimore says the campout was her sister, Brenda Dancy Jarrett’s dream. “It was always something I wanted to do,’’ said Jarrett, “one of the things I can now cross off my bucket list.”

With more than 20 families gathered at the first event, Jarrett says she and the oth ers involved with the CCDC are looking forward to next year.

Bernita Benson-Robertson, who taught school in the Lansing, MI School System, is a native of East Madison County and returned to her roots to carry on the legacy begun by her late mother, Mrs. Majorie Benson.

“Developing the old Tri-Community School into a community cen ter was her passion,” said Benson-Robertson who has now taken hold of the project.

A retired educator, Benson-Robertson, the

CEO of the East Madi son County Community Association, welcomed Mississippi poet and actor Autry Davis to Jackson last Saturday.

Several dozen youth and adults were treated to “A Taste of Poetry” by Davis, who combined his acting skills and poetry for an hour of entertainment.

Davis, who has an MFA in Performance Arts from the University of Mississippi, is an accomplished storyteller, singer, actor, director, and teacher.

When asked about his presentation, Davis said, “I came here to entertain you, make you laugh. I didn’t care whether you knew it was poetry or not. I figured you would find out sooner or later.”

The goal of this event was to bring poetry to life for students, added Benson Robertson. “We were so pleased with Mr. Davis’ performance, and from the smiles and laughter coming from the children, I think I can say that they enjoyed

it too.”
