SUSPECT CHARGED IN APRIL 2018 HOMICIDE AT GAS STATION WBBJ 7 Eyewitness News Staff JACKSON, Tenn. — Jackson police have charged a man in connection with an April 2018 shooting at a north Jackson gas station.

Court documents say 34-year-old Tony Latrell Greer spoke with investigators on Oct. 3 after a man was killed at the Goldline gas station last year.

Court documents say Greer told investigators he shot the clerk, Najeab Alshaif, during an attempted robbery on April 30, 2018.

Greer is charged with first-degree murder.

Court documents say police responded to the attempted robbery around 2:30 a.m.

April 30, 2018. Alshaif had been shot, and the suspect left the business.

Alshaif died from his injuries at a local hospital.

VICTIM IN SEPTEMBER SHOOTING DIES, SUSPECT CHARGED WITH MURDER WBBJ 7 Eyewitness News Staff JACKSON, Tenn. — A man critically injured in a September shooting on Middleton Street has died from his injuries, according to court documents.

Court documents say Julio Almaraz died October 10, two weeks after he was shot.

Keenan Murphy, 21, is now charged with first-degree murder in Almaraz’s death.

Court documents say Murphy is accused of injuring Joe Ramierz, who was in the vehicle with Almaraz and Murphy, during the shooting. Murphy is also accused of fatally shooting another man, Thomas Curry, and injuring Vincent Reed Jr. on October 4.

Court documents say investigators found a .40-caliber shell casings at the scene.

During Murphy’s arrest on October 4, investigators found him with a .40-caliber handgun.

Court documents say Murphy admitted to buying that gun from Joe Ramirez the day of the shooting, and said he told Almaraz to east Jackson, where he planned to shoot Ramirez and Almaraz.

THP TROOPER CHARGED WITH DUI, PLACED ON LEAVE WBBJ 7 Eyewitness News Staff PARIS, Tenn. — A Tennessee Highway Patrol trooper has been placed on leave after his arrest Monday morning in Henry County.

Paris police say Daryl Veliz, 36, was charged with DUI first offense and possession of a firearm while under the influence of alcohol.

Police say an officer saw a gray Ford truck off the roadway Monday morning, with the vehicle running.

The driver was slumped over in the seat, and noticed open containers of alcohol in plain view in the vehicle, according to police.

The driver, identified as Veliz, also did poorly on a field sobriety test, police say.

Officers also found a loaded Smith & Wesson .380 handgun in the vehicle.

The Tennessee Highway Patrol confirmed Veliz is a trooper and was off-duty at the time of his arrest. THP says Veliz has been placed on discretionary leave with pay pending the outcome of an internal investigation

Teen assaults grandma over $10, court records show BARTLETT, Tenn.Ê- A BartlettÊteen assaulted his grandmother after she would not give him $10, according to an affidavit.Ê Jared Otte, 19, was arrested Sept. 13 and faces a charge of robbery after the assault on Aug. 30.

The victimÊcontacted the Shelby County Sheriff’sÊOffice after the assault. She stated he came into her residence and demanded cash.

The victim told officers that she told him no. He preceded to push her on the bed, hold her down, raise her dress and remove $10 from her undergarments.

She suffered bruises on her arms and legs in the incident.

Otte’s bond was set at $10,000 and his next court date is set for Oct. 15.

LA VERGNE MAN CHARGED WITH SOLICITATION OF A MINOR RUTHERFORD COUNTY – An investigation by Tennessee Bureau of Investigation Special Agents with the Internet Crimes Against Children (ICAC) Task Force has resulted in the arrest of a La Vergne man.

On October 1st, TBI Agents received information about an individual who was engaged in sexually illicit conversations on an online platform. During the course of the investigation, Agents developed information that identified that individual as Kyle Rawson of La Vergne.

On October 10th, with the assistance of officers with the Rutherford County Sheriff’s Department ICAC Task Force and La Vergne Police Department, TBI Agents arrested Kyle Ray Rawson (02/10/1989) and charged him with one count of Solicitation of a Minor and one count of Soliciting Sexual Exploitation of a Minor by Electronic Means. He was booked into the Rutherford County Jail on a $50,000 bond.

Scammers are now using a computerized phone number showing the call is from Ê4236000, which is the number for the Madison County Sheriff’s Office, but it is not from us.

Beware, they are advising citizens that your credit cards have been compromised, to cut them up and give them your P.I.N. number and come to the MCSO. DON’T DO THAT!Ê Hang up immediately and never share any personal information.Ê Certainly never send money or gift cards.

The Holiday season is rapidly approaching and these “scam” calls will be increasing so be wise and protect yourself.

Please call the MCSO if you receive such a call, but be aware that often these calls come from outside the U.S. and your money can not be retrieved.

The woman who was killed was Atatiana Jefferson, 28, according to the Tarrant County Medical Examiner’s Office.

Price and City Manager David Cooke canceled a trip to Phoenix they had planned to begin Sunday to attend economic development meetings because of Jefferson’s death.

On Saturday evening, Price released a statement about the shooting.

“Writing a statement like this is tragic and something that should never be necessary. A young woman has lost her life, leaving her family in unbelievable grief. All of Fort Worth must surround Atatiana Jefferson’s family with prayers, love and support,” Price said in the statement. “Chief Kraus and his command staff are acting with immediacy and transparency to conduct a complete and thorough investigation.”

Man dies after being found shot inside TSU dorm NASHVILLE, TN (WSMV) - A 19-year-old man died after being shot on Sunday.

The victim was found unconscious in a hallway of one of the residence halls, according to a news release from Tennessee State University.

Metro Police said the victim was found at 3400 Alameda Street and taken to TriStar Centennial Medical Center. Hospital staff determined that the man had been shot in the abdomen and was transferred to TriStar Skyline Medical Center where he died.

“We are heartbroken by this loss and we grieve with the young man’s family and friends. In times like these, we must come together and support each other as one university community.

Director of Alumni Affairs Named to 2019 Leadership Jackson Class Jackson, Tenn. - The Jackson Chamber is pleased to announce the 2019 Leadership Jackson class with Lane College Director of Alumni Affairs Braylin Laster among the nominees.Leadership Jackson is a development program for community members who demonstrate leadership potential. Lane Homecoming Festivities make Economic Impact Annually in Jackson Jackson, Tenn. - With the 2019 Lane College homecoming football game just a little over a week away, the economic impact the week’s festivities have on the City of Jackson and Madison County are already being felt through the hotel and venue reservations, local vendors as well as the College itself.

According to a 2014 study conducted by the UNCF, “Lane College generates $36 million in total economic impact for its local and regional economies.”

But the homecoming football game is just the culmination of a week long festivities happening all over Jackson.

The week kicks off on Sunday, October 13 with a Praise Factor Gospel Concert at 6 p.m. in the CMAC Auditorium. At 11 a.m. Monday is the Homecoming Opening Prayer Service in front of Bray Hall.

Midnight Madness kicks off the 2019-2020 men’s and women’s basketball seasons with scrimages Tuesday evening at midnight in the J.F. Lane Gymnasium.

One of the highlights of the week is the Homecoming Chapel Service at 11 a.m.

Wednesday in the J.F. Lane Gym. Friday morning is the Annual Dr. J.L. Perry Golf Tournament starting at 7 a.m. at the Jackson National Golf Club.

Saturday begins the day long festivities with the Lane College Homecoming Parade beginning at 8:30 a.m. with tailgating outside of Lane Field at noon followed by the 2019 Homecoming football game against Kentucky State kicking off at 2 p.m.at Lane Field.

In a 2015 interview with WBBJ-TV, Lori Nunnery, Executive Director of the Jackson Convention and Visitors Bureau, spoke of the economic impact the city receives from the Lane homecoming annually.

“Lane has a significant impact on Jackson,” Nunnery, said. “They fill up our hotels, they visit our restaurants, they shop.

LOCAL ORGANIZATION HOPES TO INSPIRE CHILDREN, TEENS Teri Jelks - wbbjtv7.com JACKSON, Tenn. — A local organization is rooted in its mission to inspire children and teens in underserved communities around the Hub City.

One woman is hoping to change the world, one child at a time.

“I saw that our children, our black children, had nothing to do. They were getting killed or going to jail,” said Juanita Jones, the founder of Keep My Hood Good.

That’s when Jones decided to take action.

“God placed it on my heart to help the children, and that’s when I formed Keep My Hood Good on the corner of Lincoln Circle and Lincoln Street April of 2009,” Jones said.

For the 10th anniversary of Keep My Hood Good, the organization hosted a special banquet to highlight the Councilman Ernest Brooks with children and teens who have been volunteering in the Executive Director of Keep My community.

It was a full house inside the Jackson-Madison County School board room, Monday afternoon. Some came to show their support for Jackson-Madison County School board member, Doris Black.

“I felt empowered,” said Black. “I really did because all I saw was the naysayers but now I know that people are really looking and listening to the news and figuring out exactly what is the truth.”

At the meeting, the public shared their thoughts on the petition to recall Black.

“It feels good to know that you have support. People are telling me that they really want to help and support so I know that I can take it to court,” said Black.

School board members also discussed the Jackson Central-Merry High and Madison Academic High School building projects.

“There will be a new structure with JCM, but a lot of it is renovations that is going to take place inside with windows, doors, infrastructure, paint, wall coverings and things of that nature because structure itself is sound,” said interim superintendent for JMCSS, Ray Washington. “No reason to tear down something that is good. If we tore down that whole building to try to rebuild it would cost $40 million.”

The purpose of these meetings is to gather feedback from families and communities with Priority and Achievement School Districts (ASD) on what they want to be true in their schools. (Oct.30 Liberty Tech Magnet HS; 5:30-7:00pm.)

I truly appreciate the feedback that I receive on the articles I write for The CrimeSEEN Examiner Newspaper as well as the opportunity to be able to do so. There is a reason why Nashville is taking interest in what is going on in Jackson as there is clearly progress beyond the numbers!

Good News is not hard to find!

Isaac Elementary has exceeded growth expectations from the new curriculum. The 2018-2019 portfolio scores indicate that all Pre-K, Kindergarten, and First grade teachers met or exceeded the amount of growth expected by their students.

Dr. Jared Myracle has emphasized that curriculum matters and administrators have urged educators, teachers, and parents to trust the process.

Jackson, Madison County move forward with plans to build new schools. This shows commitment from leaders in the community to build a strong, vibrant, and resilient workforce as we move into the next decade!

You have city, county, school system all on the same page and all with skin in the game. The funding for the publicprivate partnership is at 80% and according to Julia Ewoldt of GMWT, mayors Conger and Harris say the projects will start this year even if they don’t get the remaining money.

The plan is to build is to rebuild Jackson-Central Merry on its current campus and Madison Academic as a dual enrollment high school on the University of Memphis Lambuth campus.

Why this matters.

Post-secondary education is becoming more and more important with each passing year. BLACK-BALLED State leaders respond to concerns about recall election October 14, 2019ÊÊClint Eiland - wbbjtv7.com JACKSON, Tenn. — Jackson-Madison County School Board member Doris Black is the first person to face a recall election in Madison County under House Bill 0983, which Gov. Bill Lee signed back in May. Two local leaders who supported the law, Sen. Ed Jackson and Rep. Chris Todd, said they have no comment about the specific situation with Doris Black, but they’re encouraged to see the law being used as intended.

“I’m very pleased with how the citizens have responded to this opportunity for them to get a freedom and a liberty back that I thought they already had, and utilize that for the exact purpose that they wanted–to hold their leaders accountable,” Rep. Todd said.

“To this point it has been used as intended. There just needed an ability in this county,” Sen. Jackson said.

Doris Black has suggested in previous interviews that she was considering legal action, and might hire attorneys to challenge the law itself.

“When I decide if I’m going to take it to court, and if I am going to obtain legal counsel, then that is the appropriate time,” Black said in a September interview.

The bill only applied to Madison County, which experts say might pose a problem if challenged in court.

“It may be what’s considered a local legislative bill, and under state law, a local legislative bill has to begin with the county commission providing a 2/3rds vote asking for the bill,” Sean Evans, a political science professor at Union University, said.

Rep. Todd and Sen. Jackson say they’re expecting a legal challenge at some point.

“Now whether its the current situation or not, I’m not really sure, but I certainly expect there to be a challenge at some point,” Rep. Todd said.

“There’s a good chance there will be. We’ll see. That’s something that I can’t go into any details on, because theyre probably will be,” Sen. Jackson said.

If the law is deemed unconstitutional, the earliest a new law could pass is February 2020.
