They got to hear those beagles singing sweet hound music that can only be heard with a pack of hounds in the bottoms of the Great Outdoors of West Tennessee. ‘Boo got started hunting when he was a just kid by going with his uncles Ba Ba, Junior and friend Jackie. Ironically, those guys got me startedÊ hunting also and had a dog names Ole Joe who (to this day)has kept me hunting. Ole Joe had a voice that made everyone stop looking for the rabbit and just listen to the real reason we were in the woods. Corrion Greer, 27, is charged with first-degree murder in the Nov. 16 shooting that killed Tavoris Bates outside a Middle Avenue home, according to court documents. Court documents say Greer and another man, Billy Moore, confronted Bates less than an hour before he was shot. Court documents say a witness told investigators that Greer and Moore returned around 6:15 p.m. and Moore shot Bates from the window of a car Greer was driving. Moore is also charged with first-degree murderÊin Bates’ death.

WXIAÊreportedÊthat Glenndria Morris and LaShirley Morris Pictured Right- are set to go on trial this week in the death of Kejuan Mason. The suspects face charges of felony murder, aggravated assault and first-degree cruelty to children. Their trial starts Thursday. Police found the victim after being called to an Atlanta home in October of last year. The child was taken to a hospitalÊand pronounced dead. The boy had bruises throughout his body, including on his back, chest, head and buttocks. Police said he was repeatedly hit with a baseball bat and spanked for taking a cupcake. Glenndria Morris, the boy’s guardian, changed the story she told police, according to authorities. Police also said the home was infested with roaches.
MISSISSIPPI MOTHER SHOT DEAD CHRISTMAS DAY DECEMBER 28, 2018, BYÊLUKE JONES,Êwreg.com PANOLA COUNTY, Miss. — Three young children lost their mother Christmas Day after she was gunned down while visiting friends in Panola County. Panola County Sheriff Dennis Darby said Tavashia Hale, 27, (pictured right) was shot about a dozen times Tuesday afternoon in the 15300 block of Old Panola Road west of Como. Deputies arrested 23-year-old Tevin Wink. “You got three kids left without a mom. I just want justice done,” said Hale’s mother, Lee Ann Hale. Hale said Tavashia was her only child, and she drove to Mississippi from Nashville on Wednesday after learning of her daughter’s death. “Everybody just loved her,” she said. “She was just a lovable person.” Hale said her daughter was visiting with friends when the shooting happened. “They pulled into the driveway, when she got out, shot her in the head,” Hale said. Deputies haven’t yet established a motive for the shooting, but plan to have Wink undergo a mental evaluation. Hale hopes the results will bring answers. “Her life was just taken too early, and she didn’t get a chance to just really live her life how she wanted,” Hale said. “We just want closure. We just want closure for my baby.” Part of that closure means eventually breaking the news to Tavashia Hale’s youngest two children, ages 6 and 5. “It’s hard because I don’t know to tell them about their mom,” Hale said. Wink is charged with murder and remains in custody. WHITE US judge concerned that race may play unfair role in charges POSTED 4:49 AM, JANUARY 1, 2019, BYÊAP - wreg.com MEMPHIS, Tenn. — A black federal judge in Tennessee has raised concerns that a federal prosecutor’s office in Memphis is charging black people with harsher counts than white people PHOTOS: AP/WIDE WORLD PHOTOS for similar crimes. The Commercial Appeal reports U.S. District Judge John T. Fowlkes Jr. has questioned prosecutors about racial discrimination in at least three recent cases. One of those cases involved a white man who records say sold an undercover officer 100 ecstasy pills for $800, while his black partner stayed in the car with a gun. Fowlkes asked why the white defendant wasn’t slapped with the same gun charge as the black defendant since they worked together. The gun charge carries an automatic 5-year sentence. A statement from U.S. Attorney D. Michael Dunavant denies that race “overtly or implicitly” factors into charging decisions.

Although two of the officers were subsequently convicted in federal court, many in the African-American and in other minority communities argue that this case shows how difficult it is for people of color to get justice from the criminal justice system. Marshall Brooks announces for City Council District 2 “Campaign Motto “Need for a change” Marshall Brooks has announced he will be a candidate for Jackson City Council District 2, which is currently served by Councilman Johnny Dodd. Mr. Brooks is a retired captain of the City of New York Police Department and is a husband and grandfather.Ê He spent 31 years with the New York Police Department and currently serves as 1st Vice President of the Jackson Madison County NAACP Branch. He is also a member of the 100 Black Men of West Tennessee and served as Chairman of the Red Code Political Action coalition.Ê He graduated from York College in New York in business administration. Brooks says, “there is a need for change in District 2 and many citizens have told me this District is not being properly represented. African-Americans make up 12 percent of the U.S. population, but today compose 40 percent of all prison inmates and 42 percent of those sentenced to death. The question remains whether these statistics come from racism in the criminal justice system or from other causes. Social scientists and politicians have argued about this question for decades. In a controversial 1975 article, titled “White Racism, Black Crime, and American Justice,” criminologist Robert Staples argued that discrimination pervades the justice system. He said the legal system was made by white men to protect white interests and keep blacks down. Staples charged that the system was characterized by second-rate legal help for black defendants, biased jurors, and judges who discriminate in sentencing. The RAND Corporation study found that convicted AfricanAmericans were more likely than whites to go to prison. The 26th annual 100 Black Men Scholarship Gala was held Friday night at the Carl Perkins civic center.Ê Founded in 1963. Mentors and shoppers African American young men from early education to this college scholarship event. “This year 5 young men who have been a part of the program spoke on how it positively impacts their lives. It’s an example to show what young men can be when they work hard. When they’re tenacious and when they have good examples,” said
Jerry Woods, President of the 100 Black Men of West Tennessee. All proceeds from the gala go towards the Scholarships, the organization has awarded more than $150,000 worth of scholarships to date.
