U14

WELCOME

It’s time for a thrilling new season of the Youth Premier League. After a successful first year, the second season of YPL will see the competition hosted at grounds across the state now at under-14, under-16, under-17 and under-18 levels. I’d like to thank all of the players, parents and families for your support of our changes to this pathway which,we hope, will continue to deliver a better cricket experience for everyone involved. The YPL concludes with the Youth Super Series which gives additional match opportunities for the outstanding performers. It is our role and responsibility to help develop the next crop of Australian superstars and the YPL and the YSS are great pathways for us to achieve this. I’d like to acknowledge and thank the Premier Cricket clubs, Victorian cricket country and metro affiliates and their Club and Association representatives from across Victoria, whose ongoing support for the programs in the regions are crucial to the talent recruitment process. I would also like to congratulate this season’s young men and women representatives who are contesting the Youth Premier League. We wish you the best of luck in your pursuit of personal and team success.

PLAY HARD PLAY FAIR PLAY BRAVE Congratulations on your selection for your team! Playing in the Youth Premier League is an exciting opportunity for you to challenge yourself and test your might against the best cricketers from around the state. It is important you enjoy the competition and make a positive impact on your team and your teammates both on and off the field. But above all else play brave. “Play Brave” is a phase that will be repeated many times throughout your cricket journey and your time around this game we all love, with your coaches, your teammates, and your family there to support you. For cricketers young and old, the notion of play brave can mean different things to different players. For the YPL, “play brave” is to encourage you to play your best and try your hardest, day in day out, week in week out, month on month, year on year with the enjoyment of the game which will drive you. Throughout this competition season there will be moments of brilliance, there will be times where you exceed your own expectations, and there will be times you may not have been to the standard you were expecting of yourself. The important thing to remember is to always make a total effort. Even when the odds are against you, look for how you can impact the game and support your team. Because one player can be a crucial ingredient on a team. But one player cannot make a team. For some the YPL will be a thrill of being involved with the elite junior cricket competition in the state, for your teams the goal will be progressing to the finals, and for others their strong performances may result in them being selected for the Youth Super Series and state team trials. But while a trophy carries dust, the memories you make during the Youth Premier League will last you forever. With that in mind, give it your all, enjoy your cricket and play brave, and all the best for the Youth Premier League.

Had ‘the talk’ yet? Betting and sport don’t have to go together. As a parent, there’s a lot of ‘talks’. There’s the big one, of course. And then there’s the gambling one, the one you have because many teens mistakenly think that betting is a normal part of the game. Help your kids understand the risks.

A STRONG BBL|08 CAMPAIGN HAS SOLIDIFIED SAM HARPER AS THE MELBOURNE RENEGADES LEADING GLOVEMAN HEADING IN TO THEIR CHAMPIONSHIP DEFENCE IN BBL|09.

“There are so many great wicketkeepers in Victoria. It’s been great to learn from them and all of the great coaches, and hopefully I can show what I’ve learnt on the biggest stage.”

Harper signed as an injury replacement player last season and played all 15 games, finishing the season as the team’s leading run scorer.

The wicketkeeper started his cricketing journey with the Outer East Eagles in the YPL. Here he honed his craft with the gloves and bat, and even rolled his arm over on occasion. His junior career also included representing Victoria at Under-17, Under-19 and Futures League. He also spent a season at Cricket Australia’s Centre of Excellence learning under former Test keeper Brad Haddin.

The 22-year old started his BBL career with the Melbourne Stars in 2016 before switching to team red last year and made an immediate impact. A quick fire 36 off 25 balls on debut helped cement his spot in the side, and an unbeaten half century against the Heat solidified his position.

M SA R E P R A H 6

“Last year was massive for my career and my confidence,” Harper said. “I can’t wait to put the red jersey back on and defend our title.” This is not the first time he has made a great first impression. In his first match with Victoria in 2016, Harper had nine dismissals, the most ever for a player on debut. “Making my Sheffield Shield debut at the MCG was the awesome, and taking as many catches as I did was unbelievable.”

“Playing for the Eagles was instrumental in making me the player I am today. It taught me so much about cricket, both on and off the field. I don’t think I’d be the player I am today if it weren’t for all of those experiences.” “The elite coaching, training sessions and exposure o high performance atmosphere set the foundation of my career and shaped my mindset to always be the hardest working person on the team.”

“Keeping to the likes of Peter Siddle and James Pattinson, with Cameron White standing right next to me…It was a dream come true.” Playing just the one Sheffield Shield game in 2018/19 and not taking field through the 50 over season, Harper is hoping to lock down the keeper position for the Vics in season 2019/20 and beyond.

A TERRIBLE CRICKET INNINGS, BUT A ROAD TOLL WE SHOULD AIM FOR. Last year, 259 people lost their lives on Victorian roads. Thousands more suffered serious, often life changing injuries. Together with Cricket Victoria and the broader Victorian community, the TAC is working towards our long term goal to achieve zero road deaths and serious injuries. This vision is called Towards Zero.

COACHINGISFOREVERYONE The game of cricket can lead down many different pathways, and take you across the world. For South East Bayside Breakers Under-16 and Under-18 coach Chris Hall, his cricket journey has taken him 17,000 kilometres from home. “I’ve been involved in cricket since the day I was born watching my Dad and Uncles play for my home club back in Bury, Manchester, UK,” Hall said. “My coaching journey began as an 18 year old at Ramsbottom Cricket Club (England), coaching Under 10s and my passion to coach, teach and mentor cricketers grew from there.” Hall has a wealth of cricket experience as both a player and coach, having played across England before moving to Australia in 2001. Here he progressed his coaching skills through Cricket Victoria and Cricket Australia accreditation courses and has earned the highest coaching qualification in the country. Coaching has given Hall a range of unbelievable experiences, including being second-in-command with the Victorian Womens Under-17 squad and thousands of one-on-one skill sessions, but credits the Youth Premier League pathway as a ‘vital’ aspect of developing future stars. “It gives our players exposure to the best coaches through trial and practice components of the program and then the competition provides the players the opportunity to showcase their skills against the best in the state and to learn to put into practice a team game plan in competition.” Outside of cricket, Hall has a Computer Science degree, which he utilises to to improve his players and create game plans, showing his unique mix of traditional styles with new and modern innovation. He has implemented his coaching talent as a video analyst, spin coach and numerous head coaching roles, including his current role with the Breakers. Hall’s coaching philosophy is built enjoyment, enthusiasm and skill-development, one in which he has built the foundation of success. “For my players, team and myself, fun is the number one focus. If you are enjoying your cricket, then you are relaxed and your performance reflects this. “ The YPL is promoting the mantra of ‘play brave’ for the season, encouraging players of all ages to believe in their abilities and to take their opportunities. Hall is excited to see the young players taking on the challenges of the competition and playing an uptempo brand of cricket. “I can’t give too much away!” Hall joked, “but you will see a very brave approach in the field and running between wickets from the Breakers Under 16 and 18 teams.” “The YPL training and playing format is what allows the teams and regions to build a fun, successful culture and environment together over the off and in-season periods, ” Hall reiterated. “It’s opened up access to several Professional Development opportunities for myself and for the players it gives them access to the best coach’s and facilities in their region so they can add to the skill sets they already have.” UNDER 14 MALE YOUTH PREMIER LEAGUE 2018-19 | CRICKET VICTORIA

A DUAL SPORT ATHLETE, JACKSON COLEMAN IS FLOURISHING SINCE DEVOTING HIS FOCUS PURELY ON CRICKET, AND HAS RISEN THROUGH THE RANKS.

“I had so many great coaches in my junior years. They’re so knowledgable and always knew exactly what areas of my game I needed to improve.”

The son of AFL footballer Glenn Coleman, Jackson was a promising young talent in both AFL and cricket. He set his heart on the bat and ball in the 2015/16 season and has earned himself a handy resume ever since.

The new and improved YPL system allows for the players to spend more time on the field and to improve all facets of their game.

“Since I gave my full attention to cricket, I’ve improved a lot and done a lot of things I never thought I would.” Some of those include earning a senior contract with the Victorian men’s squad and the Melbourne Stars, and making his debut at the MCG in BBL|05.

N O S K C JA N A M E L O C 17

“The new format is amazing for the kids coming through junior competitions. Playing more games and encouraging the young boys and girls to be confident and positive in their cricket is the perfect thing we should be teaching them.” “I wish there was something like this when I was rising through the ranks!”

“Getting the chance to play a game at the MCG is something I have dreamt of my whole life, Coleman said. “To get to make my BBL debut in front of my friends and family on the hallowed turf is a moment I will never forget.” “Now to be able to call it my home ground is amazing.” Coleman worked his way through Victoria’s Futures League (Second XI) team and made his senior debut in 2016. He caused a stir in his second game at senior level, taking a stellar 5/39 against New South Wales. His solid and economical performance throughout the one day series earned him his debut in Victoria’s red-ball team, where he took a big scalp in Marcus Stoinis. “Playing for Victoria is such an honour and a privilege. It’s something I’ll never take for granted and will never stop working for.” A product of the outhern Pioneers program, Harper credits his junior days with setting him up to become the player he is today. “Playing with the Pioneers lay the foundation of my cricket knowledge. It taught me so many skills, both on and off the ground, and I made a lot of life-long friends.”

PACEBOWLERWELFARE

PACE BOWLERS TO BE LIMITED TO

• U13 Four overs maximum each spell* & Eight overs maximum per match. Target 100-120 balls per week (match & training)

• U15 Allow 4-6 weeks gradual bowling preparation prior to the season. Five overs maximum each spell* & twelve overs maximum per match. Target 100-120 balls per week (match & training)

Over the past year our understanding of how workload may contribute to bone stress injury in young fast bowlers has advanced significantly. As a result the existing youth fast bowling guidelines have been refined. Consultation with State/Territory medical and fitness staff, as well as pace bowling coaches, has provided a clear Australian Cricket position. Below is a summary of the rationale to change and the changes themselves.

• U17 Allow 6-8 weeks gradual bowling preparation prior to the season. Six overs maximum each spell* & 16 overs maximum per match. Target 120-150 balls per week (match & training)

• U19 Allow 8-10 weeks gradual bowling preparation prior to the season. Seven overs maximum each spell* & 20 overs maximum per match. Target 150-180 balls per week (match & training) *rest between spells should be the same number of overs from the same end as the completed spell

MANAGEMENT APPROACH • Lumbar (low back) stress fracture is the most debilitating fast bowler injury and results in the most time missed due to any injury in young fast bowlers • Adolescence provides a “window of opportunity” to improve bone strength with consistent bowling through this period when bone is thought to be responsive to well-planned loading. This has potential to develop a stronger thicker lumbar vertebrae that are better capable of withstanding the loads of fast bowling • Cricket Australia research shows that the frequency of bowling sessions (more sessions per week and less time between sessions) increases the risk of developing a lumbar stress fracture. This appears to be a more prominent risk factor than the number of balls bowled • Sustained bowling over a prolonged period of time (e.g 3 months) without a rest period was is also a risk factor in the development of lumbar stress fracture

1. AGE

2. WORKLOAD

• Growing bones

• Understand

are more susceptible to injury • Spinal bones don’t fully mature until the mid 20’s

previous loads

3. TECHNIQUE 35º

• Plan & Monitor for each individual • Avoid large load spikes

Counter-rotation Greater than 35º is a risk

• The existing guidelines are complex and can result in young bowlers not getting the consistent bowling through a week that they require for their physical and technical development
