Julia Cassels Reflections of Africa 2014

Julia Cassels

Julia seized the opportunity to work with the Maasai in the heart of Kenya’s Rift Valley in her early 20’s. There she found the wondrous rhythms, shapes, and colours captivating, forming a lasting impression, and sparking a life-long love for Africa and its wildlife. Her travels have taken her to many countries across Europe, Africa and Central America. Having spent a year working in the safari world in Zambia’s beautiful Luangwa Valley, she set off with her husband in their faithful Land Rover “Penelope” to drive the Old Silk Route from England to Nepal. There they managed a lodge in the Himalayas in the foothills of the Annapurnas. Still with the urge to explore, they returned to Zambia and enjoyed working for a further seven years there, before moving north to Tanzania. It was this incredible decade of working both in Africa and Nepal that formed the foundation of her work, and continues to inspire her today. She keeps it alive by returning to Africa regularly. Although specialising in watercolour, Julia enjoys the basics of draughtsmanship and brevity of line to gain a natural spontaneous fluidity. She will often introduce inks, graphite or charcoal for emphasis. While her distinctive style displays a remarkable understanding of colour and rhythm in her subjects, and a true knowledge of the bush. Recently Julia has enjoyed discovering acrylics. Working on board and canvas, she has found this new medium adds a wonderful new found substance, range and texture, unachievable in watercolours. Returning to England ten years ago, Julia now paints and sculpts form her studio in Hampshire, from where she also runs her own art courses and workshops. Following the success of her first book “How to Capture Movement in your Painting”, she has recently been asked to lead a painting tour to Zambia for Art Safari in May next year. Julia exhibits widely in the UK and abroad, with much of her work found in collections worldwide. Fifteen years since her last exhibition, and inspired by her recent return trips to Africa, Julia is exhibiting in this, her 7th solo show.
