NEILD was born in Australia where the wide, unoccupied landscape first formed her seeing and still influences her palette. Everything there is muted by ochres and grey except for the intense blue sea and sky. In recent years the generous spaces of the English countryside have given her a second source. The English landscape is not empty but etched over with ancient tracks and earthworks, the traces of previous lives, and always enlivened by season and weather. She also includes figure painting and still lives in her subject matter. Her work lies between abstract and figurative moving back and forth across the boundary. Sometimes a picture begins as an abstract composition until something wells up and directs it towards a subject. Sometimes it begins with a subject and then the work takes on a life of its own and moves away from the starting point.Truth to expression and to the material is more important than objective truth which is merely reporting. In the words of Sickert “the singing of a song learned by heart, not a feat of sight reading”. Paint for its own sake, as thin as watercolour, as thick as butter, and everything in between; this is her real subject. It can be wiped on with a rag or scraped off with card. Each brush leaves a different mark and each surface receives the paint in its own way. Oil paint gives a sensuousness and a subtlety to both texture and colour that invite experiment.

LANSLEY has always loved to draw and paint. Her career in Publishing led Bridget to increasing involvement in her painting, a journey inspired by, among others, Robin Child at his Lydgate Research Centre in Devon. Bridget’s paintings are simultaneously figurative and abstract – encompassing a fluid command of texture and hue. Her form and colour juxtapositions surprise and please with their bright spontaneity. The vibrancy of palette, energy of brush stroke and lively intricacy of line – all contribute to her passionate study of 20th century art.

NNIE FIELD worked as an interior designer for thirty years, with clients all over the world. Along with the renowned interior designer, Jane Churchill, Annie presented ITV’s “Finishing Touches”, the first interior design programme on television which was filmed in the UK and America.

Annie studied at the Sculpture Academy in London, attending two days a week for four years. Annie continues to take painting, drawing and sculpting lessons. She is a member of the Chelsea Arts Society and the South West Sculptors Association.

ATHY MONTGOMERY’S inspiration is taken from the figure or the landscape, but that is only a starting point. Her aim is not to represent exactly what she sees but to develop it into a dynamic composition and a harmonious whole. She uses colour to create a balance and a tension between abstract forms. Broken areas of opaque paint overlaying translucent washes punctuated by occasional scraped areas are characteristic of her work. Vibrant juxtaposition of colour, sometimes seemingly irrational, but nonetheless carefully analyzed on the palette, creates an unexpected excitement.

K

Often a sensitive, deceptively random drawing line links abstract shapes to suggest a horizon, a pathway, a distant clump of trees; the interpretation is left to the viewer. It is this mystery which the artist invites the observer to explore. Kathy Montgomery was born and educated in South Africa. After graduating with a B.A. at the University of Cape Town she moved to London in 1968, and has pursued her painting career ever since. Kathy’s work is held in private collections in the UK, France, New Zealand and the United States.
