CRUISERS SWIM TEAM

MULTISPORT SWIM TRAINING

Designed for entry-level nonswimmers, aspiring triathletes and elite-level swimmers.

Enjoy a challenging workout in a positive and fun group setting. Expect a variety of swim sets and drills to improve technique. If you are seeking a new low-impact, total body cardio exercise, swimming may be exactly what you are looking for.

Divers of all abilities can participate in a Colorado Association of Recreational Athletics summer dive team.

BEGINNER (AGES 6-12)

For participants who want to learn how to dive properly and have minimal experience and understanding of diving.

Skills taught: progression of a forward dive, kneeling dive, standing dive, diving from a block and off the diving board, forward hurdle and an assisted back approach. Prerequisite: Youth 3 swimming skills.

A $5 cancellation fee will be imposed on cancellations requested within three days of the beginning of the session.

YOUTH 6

Prerequisites: Skills from Youth Level 5.

Skills taught: 200 yards of front crawl, 100 yards of back crawl, 50 yards of breaststroke, treading for 5 minutes, 400 yards of nonstop swimming and 25 yards of butterfly. Introduces sidestroke.

LIFEGUARD CERTIFICATION REVIEW CLASS

This class gives individuals the opportunity to review the full course content. The course format optimizes the participant’s ability to successfully complete the knowledge and skill evaluations. Participants have an opportunity to view a video segment, practice and perform skills for evaluations and complete the final written exam for the course. You must hold a current lifeguard certification from American Red Cross and provide evidence of such certification to participate in this class.

LIFEGUARD TRAINING CLASSES

Prepares participants for work as professional lifeguards. To participate, swimmers must able to complete a 300-yard swim test utilizing front crawl and breaststrokes, tread water for two minutes non-stop using kick only (no arms/hands), as well as retrieve a 10 pound brick from 10 feet deep and return across the 20 yard pool in one minute and forty seconds only using a kick. Successful completion of the course does not guarantee employment with the Town.

Thai Boxing, traditionally known as Muay Thai, is referred to as “The Art of the Eight Limbs”, because the hands, shins, elbows, and knees are all used extensively. Brazilian Jiu Jitsu is a martial art with a strong focus on grappling. Brazilian Jiu Jitsu eventually became world famous as one of the most effective Martial Arts in the world and an excellent way for a smaller weaker practitioner to overcome a larger stronger one without serious injury to either person.

FUNDAMENTALS OF BRAZILIAN JIU JITSU

The chief instructor is John Addison, an American Taekwondo Association fifth degree Black Belt with more than 30 years of teaching experience. There are also several assistant Black Belt instructors. This is an ongoing traditional Taekwondo program for all ranks ages 5 and up, and is fun and safe for the entire family. Taekwondo is a Korean martial art focusing on kicking and striking.

We train in forms, sparring, self-defense and some traditional weapons (safety padded).

The Red Hawk Ridge Junior Golf Academy is for children ages 6 to 16 (no exceptions) and has a fresh look for 2016. Juniors will learn various aspects of the game including rules, fundamentals, etiquette, putting, chipping, irons and woods. Red Hawk has adopted the SNAG (Starting New at Golf) system for new to golf rookies programs. SNAG is an alternative program and the easiest, most fun way to learn to golf. Please make sure SNAG is the appropriate program for your junior.

JUNIOR GOLF ACADEMY LEAGUES

The six-hole, nine-hole and 18-hole Junior Golf Leagues give advanced junior golfers the opportunity to have fun and compete for weekly prizes. A different format will be used each week to introduce junior golfers to the competitive side of the game.

League fee will include entry into the 2016 Junior Golf Championship on July 26, as well as a punch card good for one meal before or after each event. A competitor is considered advanced if he or she knows and follows all of the rules and etiquette of golf, shows satisfactory course management skills and golfing ability, and can maintain a satisfactory pace of play. It is mandatory that each participant have a parent volunteer for at least two of the scheduled events.

Participation will be at the discretion of the PGA staff at Red Hawk.

Wild in our Town SUMMER TRAILS EXPLORATION PROGRAM (STEP)

TRAIL MAINTENANCE GROUPS

Step into summer once again with STEP! Back for the second year in a row, residents of all ages are invited to spend the beautiful summer days of Colorado exploring the paved and soft-surface trails that travel through Castle Rock.

This program starts on American Hiking Society’s National Trails Day –Saturday, June 4– and continues through the Labor Day weekend.

The first 50 participants who sign up for STEP this year will receive a free T-shirt celebrating the inaugural year of the program. Submit a completed “passport” tracking the hikes you enjoy this summer and be entered into a grand prize drawing for an outdoor-themed gift. The more sites you visit, the more entries you receive for the drawing.

The POST Partners Program works with two trail maintenance volunteer groups that help maintain and improve our trail system and Bike Park, the Ridgeline Wranglers and the Rhyolite Bike Park Dirt Crew. Volunteers help with creating water diversions, clearing scrub oak and other brush that may encroach on the trail, maintaining jump lips, implementing trail improvements and eliminating berms, ruts or noxious weeds. Both groups conduct monthly outings (April-Oct.) and schedules can be found at CRgov.com/POSTPartners.

Volunteerism can count towards both high school community service requirements and court-ordered community service.

Natural resource staff and law enforcement representatives from the Town, Douglas County Open Space and Colorado Parks & Wildlife, will be available to provide interesting wildlife facts and answer questions about coyotes, bears, deer, mountain lions, bobcats, rattlesnakes, prairie dogs, beavers and other native wildlife. Real wildlife displays will be on-hand to see and touch. Open to all ages.

HUNTER SAFETY CERTIFICATION

Hunter safety classes are available locally throughout the year. Courses are either online, home study, in-class or hybrid options, to fit your schedule and learning style. CONCEALED HANDGUN PERMIT COURSE

This advanced course prepares women and men, 21 and older, to apply for a Concealed Handgun Permit, also known as a CCW permit. A discussion of handgun rules and regulations is followed by demonstrations with various handguns and equipment used for concealed carry. A review of personal safety measures, how to respond to a deadly encounter and the aftermath of a shooting is presented. The training certificate issued upon course completion meets Colorado competency requirements for the permit.

Students must have previous handgun training and shooting experience prior to registration, subject to instructor approval, or should take the Basic Pistol Course first.

BASIC PISTOL COURSE

This course is for beginners, who have little or no knowledge or experience with handguns. Taught by an NRA-certified instructor, this one-day classroom session is followed by one hour of live fire on a gun range. Professionally developed content helps students become familiar with all aspects of handguns. Course includes operation as well as how to fire handguns in a safe and responsible manner. No handgun is required since all equipment will be provided. This is an excellent course to take before deciding if you want to purchase a handgun in the future.

REAL WEEKEND ADVENTURE

What is better than spending the night up in the mountains? Spending two nights in the mountains with friends! Spend two nights and two days in a lodge at YMCA of the Rocky Mountains in Estes Park. While there enjoy a campfire, hiking in or near Rocky Mountain National Park, team-building, and much more! Cost includes five meals at the meal hall, transportation, lodging activities and supervision.

This will be an independent opportunity to experience the wonders of sleeping under the stars at Cherry Creek State Park.

Participants will enjoy outdoor food preparation, relax around a campfire, set up and sleep in a tent, play yard games, go for a short hike/nature walk, and have fun!

Tents will be provided. Bring a sleeping bag, pillow, flashlight, water bottle, sunscreen, hat, bug spray, camping chair, closed-toed athletic shoes, sack lunch for Sunday, and clothing for daytime and sleeping. The evenings will almost certainly be chilly, so please plan accordingly. Jamie Eglseder of Castle Rock Recreation and Deni of Parker Recreation will guide this trip. Volunteers are also needed.

REAL INTRO TO KAYAKING

We will be training to run the Denver Hot Chocolate 5K in October. Yes, there is hot chocolate at the finish! All ability and experience levels will be accommodated.

Additional training outside of the program is highly recommended. Cost of this training program includes all training sessions, race registration and race-day supervision.

All participants receive a Hot Chocolate 5K hoodie. The training group will meet at the Recreation Center every Tuesday evening.

Runs/walks will take place outdoors and inside on the treadmills. The amount of time required for each training session may vary based on distance and training pace. Our program enables those with special needs to benefit from aquatic activity while learning water safety skills. Registration begins:

To qualify as a resident team, at least half of the players must be Castle Rock residents.

A minimum of $100 must be paid at registration to secure a spot. Remainder of league fees must be paid no later than the scheduled coach/manager meeting date.

There are no exceptions to this rule. If the balance of league fee is not paid by this time, your team’s position from the league may be forfeited, and the vacated spot given to another team on the waiting list. Teams and players may only play at one level of competitiveness in a given sport. This is important for keeping a balance among teams and having our programs remain fun for everyone participating.

Using the QuickStart Tennis play format, this program takes a new and better approach to introducing kids to the game. Balls are lower in compression; they bounce lower and don’t move as fast, so they are easier to hit.

This allows kids time to get to the ball and helps them develop optimal swing patterns.

Racquets are sized for small hands, and the courts are smaller and easier to cover.

All that equals more fun and less frustration.

Full-sized courts are reconfigured to accommodate up to six 36-foot courts, so instead of waiting in line, kids can spend their time playing.

Coach Ben Wolfe will be conducting practices for players of all abilities. Players will be able to practice hard and improve their tennis game in an energetic, fast paced setting. Have you ever wanted to see your child’s stories come to life? In the summer camp, kids learn how to create a story using stop-motion animation. Similar to a flip book, students take digital pictures and group them together in time-sequence to produce a motion video. Camp is a great introduction into movie production, video editing and movie effects. No previous animation experience is needed. All campers take home a USB drive with the movie they produced. ADVENTURE CLUB PRESCHOOL PROGRAMS - NOW ENROLLING Adventure Club preschool and pre-k programs offer a secure, enriching and nurturing environment in which children are able to establish the solid educational foundations they need to have success in future academic and social endeavors. Adventure Club programs are state-licensed, continuous school-year programs, beginning in September and ending in May. All participants must have an up-to-date immunization record, health physical and emergency card on file. Preschool participants (ages 3-4) must have reached their third birthdays by Oct. 1.

Pre-k participants (ages 4-5) must have reached their fourth birthdays by Oct. 1.

Adventure Club 2016-17 registration is now open. The school year starts Sept. 3 and 4. Registration packets will be available at the Recreation Center or online, CRgov.com/ classrooms.

JUNIOR PRESCHOOL

Coming this fall, the junior preschool program is geared toward children who are ready to go to school, but not old enough to attend our preschool program.

The program’s curriculum will include songs, stories, crafts and playtime.

Children will work on counting and numbers, zoo-phonics, colors, shapes and fine motor skills such as cutting, coloring and gluing to give them a good foundation for preschool. Ages 2 ½-3 ½.

KINDERGARTEN PREP

Let’s keep the learning going over the summer with kindergarten Prep. This class is designed as a stepping stone to kindergarten. We will work on building a strong foundation for kindergarten.

We will use the same fun learning techniques for our summer session that we do during the regular school year.

This means we will use the Zoo Phonic curriculum to enhance learning. This class will have an academic structure, which will include reading, writing, phonemic awareness, math and science.

The class is designed to fully equip your child to begin the math, reading, spelling and writing process in kindergarten.

PEDAL THE MOON WHERE THE FUN IS AS FULL AS THE MOON!

The seventh-annual fun-filled bike ride will begin at Butterfield Park and proceed south along the paved East Plum Creek Trail to finish at Festival Park in Downtown Castle Rock. This ride will take place on mostly flat terrain and is geared for riders of all ages. This is a one way ride. Please make arrangements for post-ride transportation. Registered riders will have a chance to win fabulous prizes including three new cruiser bikes! Winners must be present to win. All riders must wear a helmet and have a front headlamp and blinking rear light. Riders are encouraged to light and decorate their bikes.
