historical v Welcome to Philip S. Miller Park

When you first step into the Town's new regional park, you might have trouble choosing what to do first. The fun at Philip S. Miller Park spans more than 230 acres. After years of planning and construction, the largest park project in Town history will soon be open to the public. Philip S. Miller Park will house a variety of outdoor activities, including a lighted synthetic-turf field, an adventure playground for kids (opening early 2015), more than 6 miles of hiking and biking trails, and a challenge staircase for the most die-hard fitness buffs. The signature building is the park’s crowning feature. The building has so many new things for residents to do, it was hard to find a name to capture all of the adventure. But you helped it come together by providing your feedback. In August 2014, the building became the MAC – or the Miller Activity Complex. The MAC will house both full-sized and half-sized indoor synthetic-turf fields, an aquatic center with a leisure pool and four lap lanes, a children’s climbing structure, a trampoline room, birthday party rooms and much more! Come explore the park on Saturday, Oct. 25, and enjoy everything it has to offer. The MAC, and all the fun inside, will be free for the entire day. And, this is just phase one. There are even more plans for the park in the future including a zip line system that will propel daredevils at more than 50 mph down the valley. The zip lines are planned to open next spring. Keep an eye on CRgov.com/PSMpark for updates.

philip s. mil The Castle Rock Parks and Trails Foundation, established in 2012, plays a unique role in the development of Philip S. Miller Park. The nonprofit organization raised $20,000 to add a fireplace and seating at the park pavilions to be completed during future park construction. However, that’s not the most exciting part of the foundation’s work. In the Legacy Brick Program, a $100 donation will get supporters an 8-inch by 4-inch paver engraved and placed in the park pavilions. The Park Family Stone Program offers a 12-inch by 24-inch engraved paver for a donation of $1,000. Or, a business can purchase a paver engraved with its company logo for $1,500.

legacy brick & park family stone

The foundation will continue the Legacy Brick and Park Family Stone programs in order to support its work with the Town’s Parks and Recreation Department.

Bricks and stones will be available for purchase at any time and will be placed into the patio at scheduled times every year. The foundation is always seeking new ideas for parks and trail-related projects around Town. Ideas can be submitted to info@crptfoundation.org. For more information about the foundation or to purchase a brick or stone, go to CRPTFoundation.org. Castle Rock Parks and Trails Foundation Board

history Who is Philip S. Miller?

The park is named after local banker and philanthropist Philip S. Miller. The Town is one of several local agencies that receive trust monies Miller, and his wife Jerry, left behind in the mid-1990s. The Millers valued youth and the Castle Rock community, so the Town wanted to honor that legacy as it allocated the perpetual trust funds. The trust contributes to the Castle Rock Senior Center and the Castle Rock Museum. Several nonprofits, public art and the fireworks at the Town’s Red, White and Boom celebration are all paid for through the Miller Trust. Philip S. Miller Park is another beneficiary. In 2010, the Town’s Parks and Recreation Commission, along with a resident committee, researched a project to honor the Millers' legacy. A subcommittee – the Philip S. Miller Legacy Project Committee – recommended using the funds to create community gathering structures at the park, such as a possible amphitheater, cultural arts complex, or picnic pavilions, and the MAC – or Miller Activity Complex. In January 2011, Town Council voted to name the Town's next regional park Philip S. Miller Park, which at the time was in its very beginning stages. Now, the first phase is almost ready to open. The Town knows Philip S. Miller Park will be a destination for adventure-seekers around the state. Bringing families together and encouraging them to get outdoors is a legacy that would make the Miller family proud.
