New format helps you find the classes you love.

Welcome to the new and improved Castle Rock Recreation Guide! For some time, Castle Rock Parks and Recreation has provided quality sporting activities, fitness opportunities and educational classes for the entire community. This guide has been your source of information for all those great opportunities. Now, that official source just got even better.

With the opening of the new Miller Activity Complex at Philip S. Miller Park, new opportunities were launched in Castle Rock. As those activities evolved, we knew the guide needed to be updated. Instead of flipping the guide between the two facilities, we wanted one place where residents could get all the parks and recreation information they needed. That’s where we are today.

This is your new overhauled Recreation Guide. The same great information, same great class offerings – in a new, easy-to-read guide.

Our mission in this redesign was to combine all the class information, regardless of facility. We know schedules are busy, so we wanted to provide the information to you as seamlessly as possible.

Now, parents looking for swim classes can check out the Aquatics section; teams planning to start a new softball season can go to the Sports section; and residents looking to shake up their workout routines can head to the Fitness section.

Registration still works the same. Class numbers are listed with each class to make searching the registration system more efficient.

Adult athletes wanting to stay active should go to the Sports section. There you’ll find information on the Town’s various adult sports teams. Youth sports will also be found in that section.

The center of community character gets an update New features coming to Downtown’s Festival Park Festival Park is the heartbeat of Downtown Castle Rock and is home to some of the community’s most treasured events.

Major holidays are celebrated there, community events are held there, and family memories are made there. But, imagine the park being even more. Soon, this vital organ will be transformed.

Town Council recently approved a plan to reconstruct Festival Park. In partnership with the Downtown Development Authority and the Downtown Merchants Association, the Town’s goal is to enhance the park into an urban center. This will help boost the success of adjacent Downtown businesses and will create an active public gathering place for both work and relaxation.

Throughout the planning process, the Town, along with the Downtown Development Authority and the design consultant Design Workshop, solicited input from the public to reimagine the park. Park improvements will include a landing pavilion and fire pits, splash pad, great lawn, creek-side picnic area, lighting and seating, and a gateway feature.

Additionally, stream stabilization along Sellars Gulch will be done to remain consistent with national flood plain regulations.

Pedestrian bridges between Town Hall and the park have likewise been incorporated into the plans.

It’s also important to note, the park’s design includes a partial permanent closure of Second Street. Traffic will only be permitted to enter Second Street one-way from Perry Street and will be required to exit through the alley north. This will allow for a pedestrian walkway and market plaza to be incorporated into the park.

“Having great places like Festival Park are essential to the health and prosperity of a Downtown community,” said Parks and Recreation Director Jeff Brauer. “The Town is partnering with several Downtown organizations to help provide a safe and clean urban park that will serve a variety of people and community events, and will help boost the vitality of Downtown Castle Rock businesses.”

The $6.9 million park-improvement project will include funding from both the Town and the Downtown Development Authority.

The main goal is to expand the park for the purpose of hosting community events and to attract Downtown activities and retail business.

“This is a complicated project,” said Brauer. “It’s a challenge because of the extremely limited space. The partial closure of Second Street helps that, but we also needed to incorporate Sellars Gulch. These considerations all drove up the overall cost, but we are paying careful attention to the design to make sure the Town gets the biggest bang for its buck.”

The Downtown Master Plan anticipates significant growth in residential development and employment. Creating a thriving environment in a unique urban center is part of what attracts people to living and working in the Downtown area.

“Downtown Castle Rock is a thriving community,” said Downtown Development Authority Director Kevin Tilson. “And, Festival Park is one of the most important areas. We’re excited to meet this community need and know these enhancements are truly going to add to the community character Castle Rock residents love.”

Once complete, the park will be a central gathering location for the entire Castle Rock community and will continue to be home to some of the area’s largest character-building events including Starlighting, the Starlight Movie Series, Season of the Star, Oktoberfest and more.

“We know residents love activities at Festival Park,” said Brauer. “These improvements will take the community’s character to the next level, and will create a true home for many of Castle Rock’s most beloved events.”

Construction is set to begin in early 2017 and, depending on weather, should take about a year to complete.

Funding and Festival Park reimagined Adapting to a changing community is part of the motivation behind the planned Festival Park improvements. In times of change working together is key, so the Town and Downtown Development Authority are leading the way.

Festival Park

The project has multiple funding sources including Conservation Trust Fund, allotments from the Parks and Recreation Capital Fund, stormwater account, unobligated General Fund and Downtown Development Authority sales and property tax TIF funding mechanisms.

The Town and Downtown Development Authority, along with the Downtown Merchants Association, Castle Rock Economic Alliance and the Downtown Alliance, have partnered together to help reimage the park. This collaboration started in the planning/design phase, but has continued throughout the process – including funding.

Here’s how the project’s funding breaks down: • Town of Castle Rock - $2.9 million • Downtown Development Authority $4 million • Total project cost - $6.9 million Planning for the redesign of the park was a vision some time ago. In 2008, Downtown businesses voted to increase their property taxes to help pay for Downtown improvement projects.

Those increased funds, called tax increment funding, were allocated to a special financing fund by the Downtown Development Authority.

Tax increment financing can only be used for improvements that benefit the general public – wider sidewalks or decorative lighting, for example. The Festival Park improvements would also fall in that category.

SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM The Castle Rock Parks and Recreation Department continually strives to provide quality programs for the entire community. The scholarship program provides awards to Castle Rock residents and qualified applicants.

PRIORITY REGISTRATION Priority online registration for winter/spring programs will begin Dec. 8 for Castle Rock residents. Open registration will begin Dec. 11. Certain programs may have specific registration dates and times.

LOCKERS AND TOWELS Lockers are available, and patrons are encouraged to bring padlocks. Forget your towel? They are available for purchase at the Front Desk.

FACILITIES FOR RENT Did you know the Recreation Center and MAC are affordable places to host your next event? Rates range between $35 and $110 per hour, including tables and chairs. Long-term room rentals receive a 20 percent discount.

BATTING CAGE The Grand Slam Batting Cage offers a frameless cage with a large 28-foot perimeter cage that can be split into two bays. Teams can hold infield practice, or batting and pitching practice with this design. Each bay includes an L screen, pitching mound, balls, bats and helmets.

Pitching machines are not available.

INDOOR TURF FIELD The MAC features one full-sized, 185-feet by 85-feet, boarded turf field and a second half-sized, 100-feet by 75-feet, turf field. This indoor arena houses youth and adult sports including indoor softball, soccer, lacrosse, flag football, rugby, youth sports clinics and much more!

REAL ADAPTIVE SWIM LESSONS Adaptive swim lessons are fun, educational and instill lifelong aquatic skills in a water safe environment. Come join us for a world of independence in the water! Classes emphasize communication, motor skills, problem solving, and socialization. Adaptive lessons are open to all ages and provide one-to-one instruction. Classes are scheduled by appointment only at the MAC. Packages offer weekly or biweekly lessons. REAL FAMILY TRAMPOLINE EXTRAVAGANZA Come enjoy the MAC and meet other families who have a child/sibling with a disability. Share resources in the party room over pizza, then jump on the trampolines for fun with the family!

Parent participation required. A quiet room will be available to relax and have snacks. The facility is still open to the public during this event, but Tuesday nights are typically pretty quiet at the MAC. Children age 7 and under require an adult on the trampoline with them at all times.

PARENT-TOT I (Age 6-24 Months) Parents help introduce children to water using circle-time songs, while learning basic body positions and holding techniques to promote water comfort. PARENT-TOT II (Age 2-4) For toddlers who have advanced beyond Parent-Tot, but aren’t ready to be in the water without a parent. Aquatics

CRUISERS SWIM TEAM The Castle Rock Cruisers Swim Team provides an opportunity for young swimmers to be involved with a recreational swim team. Practice sessions involve development of the four competitive strokes, flip turns and starts. As a prerequisite, all participants must be able to swim one continuous length of the pool using either freestyle or backstroke.

All practices will be held at Butterfield Crossing (Cruisers West) or the Recreation Center (Cruisers East). Practices are divided by age and ability and the times mentioned below represent the total reserved time for the team. Parents will sign their children up for a practice segment of 30 to 90 minutes, depending on the squad.

Online registration will begin April 10. Register at CRgov.com/recreation. Suit try on and T-shirt pick up will be 8:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., April 15 at the Recreation Center.

All Levels Yoga This class connects asanas (postures) and breathing through gentle warming movements, strength and awareness-building vinyasa (flows).

Attention to alignment, personal inquiry into sensation and breath work are emphasized. Students are encouraged to practice at their own pace. Appropriate for beginners as well as intermediate students.

Core Conditioning This class focuses on the core strength, flexibility, mobility and balance of the human body while using the yogic breath to calm the nervous system as we work.

Flow Yoga Focus is on practice of postures in a vinyasa flow (movements taught in progressive order and moving from one pose to another with breath). Experience in Level II recommended. This is a class to practice intermediate poses and does not focus on teaching the asanas.

Gentle I Yoga Recommended for those who wish to practice yoga asana and conditioning exercises that open hips, lower back, legs and arms, upper body, spine and lubricate the joint of the body. This meditative practice utilizes positions that are supine, prone, on hands and knees, and seated.

TRAIL MAINTENANCE GROUPS The POST Partners program helps organize two trail maintenance groups called Ridgeline Wranglers and the Rhyolite Dirt Crew. The Wranglers help the Town maintain Stewart Trail, and the Dirt Crew helps maintain Rhyolite Bike Park’s downhill lines, pump track and session-zone jumps. Both groups also provide valuable feedback on improvements, rerouting and future development.

THE TRAILS AT PHILIP S. MILLER PARK The 8-mile native-surface trail network consists of single-track trails divided into four different, but interconnected, loops. The network includes 2.5 miles of paved accessible segments in the active park area near the Miller Activity Complex, (MAC). The trails explore all the valleys, knolls and high points of this 300-acre site. A unique feature on the site is the Challenge Hill, with 200 steps that climb 178 feet in elevation, similar to the Manitou Springs Incline. Bikes and dogs are not recommended on the Challenge Hill.

This is an active regional park that includes the Millhouse, Amphitheater, a zip-line course, adventure tower, aerial trekking course and adventure playground area. Trail users should be aware of all park users and use caution when on the trail and in the parking lots.

Parking is available in the park and the main parking lot at the MAC. The trails also connect to Ridgeline Open Space and the Stewart Trail network to the west via the Wolfensberger Road pedestrian overpass; the Ridgeline Trailhead parking lot is located on Coachline Road.

ADULT LEAGUE TEAM FEES To qualify as a resident team, at least half of the players must be Castle Rock residents. A minimum of $100 must be paid at time of registration to secure a place in the team’s respective league.

The remainder of the league fee must be paid no later than the scheduled coach/manager meeting date. If the balance of the league fee is not paid by this time, the team’s position in the league may be forfeited, and the vacated spot will be given to a team on the waiting list. Teams and players may only play at one level of competitiveness in a given sport.

MEN’S WINTER BASKETBALL The Town is offering an upper rec-level league. All teams will play a minimum of 10 games. Limited to the first six teams. There will be a mandatory manager meeting at 6:30 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 15, at the Recreation Center.

Adventure Club Preschool and Pre-k programs offer a secure, enriching and nurturing environment where children are able to establish the solid educational foundations they need for success in future academic and social endeavors.

Adventure Club programs are state-licensed, continuous school-year programs, beginning in September and ending in May. All participants must have an up-to-date immunization record, health physical and emergency card on file. Preschool participants (ages 3-4) must have reached their third birthdays by Oct. 1.

Pre-k participants (ages 4-5) must have reached their fourth birthdays by Oct. 1.

Fees and Registration At the time of registration, a nonrefundable deposit of $90 is required to secure your child’s spot through May. If the child does not attend for that month, the deposit is forfeited, and he or she may lose the spot. Whether you climb the stairs for fitness, want to smash your personal record, or you think you have what it takes to capture the course record, we have a race for you. Proceeds from this event will benefit REAL Castle Rock, the Town’s Adaptive Recreation Program.

Power Hour This division is for runners and those with experience running stairs. Climbers race up and down the Challenge Hill to see who can climb the most stairs in one hour. This race involves strategy and pacing, but is sure to leave you questioning your sanity!

Trail Run For 30 minutes, climbers ascend the Challenge Hill and descend via the blue trail. How many times can you do it?

COLORADO BLUEBIRD PROJECT The Colorado Bluebird Project operates under POST Partners Volunteer Program in Castle Rock with guidance from the Audubon Society of Greater Denver. The program improves the vitality of native bluebird populations throughout Colorado with the goal of informing and educating the public about bluebirds.

Since 2007, the program has consistently expanded and now includes almost 170 nest boxes at 29 different sites in Castle Rock.

Volunteers are needed for weekly monitoring of nest boxes and breeding activity beginning April 1 continuing through mid-August. Learn about the program and how you can help bluebirds in Castle Rock or in your own backyard at the open house with comprehensive monitoring training offered separately.

EARTH DAY WETLANDS HARVEST AND PLANTING Come Celebrate Earth Day by helping improve wetland areas at the new Philip S. Miller Park. Willow branches will be harvested at Festival Park and then replanted along a wet drainage way located on the south side of the Miller Activity Complex (MAC). Signed participation waivers are required.

Participants should bring pruning shears, engineer hammers and work gloves. Snacks and beverages are provided.

This is a perfect activity for scout groups working on their conservation badges! Adult supervision recommended for children under 12.

CHRISTMAS TREE RECYCLING DEC. 26-JAN. 31 Give one last holiday gift to the environment by taking your live Christmas tree to one of these four parks, where it will be turned into mulch that is available to the public.

This will be part of the Town’s tree recycling program and part of the Project Green environmental initiative.

Season of the Star There are many ways to celebrate the warmth of the season this year in Castle Rock! Mark your calendar for these community events: 12 Stops of Christmas Nov. 26, 2-5 p.m. Festival Park Castle Rock is a generous community, so we know your giving list is long. Take care of everyone with the 12 Stops of Christmas. Visit each participating business on the shopping passport’s route between Nov. 26 and Dec. 31 to gather stamps and enter to win a prize package. Pick up your passport from the North Pole Welcome Center in Festival Park on Nov. 26 from 2-5 p.m.

A minimum $5 purchase from each participating Downtown business or restaurant gets you a stamp on your passport. Collect all 12 stamps and turn in your passport to the North Pole Info Booth at any Season of the Star event to be entered to win a grand-prize package worth more than $300.

The Castle Rock Winter Express Dec. 17, 2-5 p.m., Festival Park It’s the traditional story, Castle Rock style. Enjoy a short train ride around Festival Park. The park will be transformed into a North Pole celebration complete with Santa. The event will also include food, vendors and carriage rides.

WinterFest Dec 3, 8 a.m.-1 p.m., Festival Park Kick off the new year at WinterFest - a celebration of the winter season.

Christmas Eve Candlelight Services Dec. 24, 4-5 p.m., Festival Park Join us in Festival Park as several churches play host to a series of candlelight services on Christmas Eve.

Storytellers and S’mores Dec. 10, 2-5 p.m., Festival Park Take a break from the hustle and bustle of the season with an afternoon around a campfire listening to stories and making S’mores. Bring a lawn chair, or blanket, and make sure to dress for the weather. This event also includes vendors, food and carriage rides.

Castle Rockin’ New Year’s Eve Dec. 31, 5-8 p.m., Festival Park Come out and celebrate the new year with us! Festival Park will be transformed with a spectacular light and sound show.

Spend the day in Downtown Castle Rock. Then, beginning at 5 p.m., every hour on the hour, until 8 p.m. we will feature a dazzling multimedia show for all to enjoy.

Come out and play with a fun, family-filled day. Santa and two of his reindeer will be here for one day. Some of the activities include crafts, an obstacle course, hot chocolate and a hay ride.
