• Per last year’s magazine, the Carrabino Family Scholarship provided over $70,000 in scholarship funds this year to well-deserving, well-rounded incoming Celts. These young men earned a combined 3.9 GPA during the 2017-2018 areas of Celt life including athletics, the arts and service.

• Crespi is a home for scholars! Over the past few academic years, the number of incoming honors students has increased impressively. This year, nearly 40% of the class of 2022 is entering Crespi ranked in the top 20% nationally (based on the HSPT entrance exam).

We look forward to continuing the growth and strength of our STEM cohort and adding new cohorts in the coming years, including Pre-Law, Business/Entrepreneurial and Arts/Entertainment.

We hope these cohorts will include internships with Crespi alumni currently working in these various fields. The work of our Advancement and Alumni office team is never-ending. One event ends, and they are simultaneously working on the next event in support of helping the school provide additional programs and assistance to those in financial need.

Finally, the school is fortunate to have Dr. Foersch, his Leadership Cabinet, and the dedicated Board of Directors, led by Mr. David DiTomaso ’74. Their work keeps Crespi’s mission and vision alive, and aims to make Crespi the strongest Catholic boys school. Dr. Foersch and the administrative team have been wonderful to work with, and they each demonstrate their daily commitment to find ways for Crespi to improve and succeed in educating our young men in the best fashion possible. It has been an excellent year for me and certainly one of the best in my 27 years in education. Thank you for such an outstanding welcome. It is a great day to be a Celt!

the 411 Dr. Liam Joyce is Crespi’s 15th Principal.

He earned his Bachelor of Arts at Boston College and both a Master of Arts in Counseling and a Doctorate in Educational Leadership for Social Justice from Loyola Marymount University.

He has twenty-two years of school administration experience ranging from kindergarten through graduate school, sixteen of those as a principal.

Crespi, including planning and executing a first-of-its-kind senior service project that welcomed eighth graders from Our Lady of the Valley Catholic School (see page 16).

Let’s get to know some of the outstanding Celts of 2018.

WILHELM “WILL” CHRISTIANSEN Harvard Bound

O

utstanding Academic Excellence Award Scholar and Celt offensive lineman Will Christiansen is looking forward to walking the hallowed halls of Harvard University in the fall. Accepted to the Ivy League institution for his impressive academic record, he will also be playing on the offensive line for the historic Crimson Football Team. Harvard’s football program is considered one of the oldest in the world, having begun competing in the sport in 1873.

How has Crespi prepared you to study and play at an Ivy League School?

I believe I am equipped for the rigors of an Ivy League school because Crespi has helped me mature and prepared me for the college classroom. The school offered many challenging courses, prepared me well for AP tests, and especially prepared me for long nights of studying with out-of-the-box teaching techniques. Crespi is in one of the toughest football leagues in the country. The intense competition that I have been exposed to, plus the physically demanding, mentally challenging training program have prepared me to play at the next level. It was great being on a team with guys who put in the same amount of effort and hard work, and had the same positive attitude.

Advice to incoming students: Be prepared to work hard. If you do, it will set you apart from others - academically, athletically and spiritually.

How will you remain connected to Crespi?

I will definitely stay in touch with the lifelong friends I have made here, and I hope one day to have the resources to give back to the Crespi community and future Celts. .

HAYDEN LIU Record Breaker

H

ailing from Hangzhou, China, Hayden Liu made a big splash at Crespi, both in the pool and the classroom. Liu has been crushing Crespi swim records since his freshman year, and has continued to break his own records each season. Liu broke the 200-yard Individual Medley record, previously set by Ron Smith in 1980 and the 100-yard backstroke record set by Armen Darbinyan in 2011. In his senior year, he was crowned a CIF D1 champion in the 200 Individual Medley and led the Celts to a CIF D1 victory in the 200-yard Freestyle Relay. Liu was also designated an All-American in multiple events by the National Interscholastic Coaches Association, placing him among the 100 fastest swimmers in the country. The Ivy-Leaguer is heading to Columbia University in New York City where he will be swimming for the Lions.

What was it like coming to a foreign country to experience high school in an all-boys learning environment?

I love to travel and experience new things. It was a bit difficult in the beginning because of the language issue. Everyone here made me feel comfortable. The Crespi brotherhood was an easy assimilation.

What is your favorite Crespi memory?

There are many, but being a part of the relay team my freshman year was really special. The three seniors on the team were like older brothers to me. They took me under their wing. As an upperclassman, I have tried to do the same to younger swimmers.

What does it feel like to leave such a swim legacy?

I worked hard for these achievements, along with my teammates. For me, it’s more rewarding to achieve a personal best time, rather than break a record.

What do you think about the future of Crespi swimming?

My records will be broken soon. We have a really fast freshman and sophomore class, and with the addition of the pool, that will make Crespi swim even better.

nother well-rounded Crespi Man, Russell Stong was the recipient of the Outstanding Academic Excellence Award and English Four-Year Department Award at graduation, and the Paul Muff Leadership Award for Basketball. A member of the State Championship basketball team, Stong was also active in the Key Club, Student Council, and the National Honor and Science Societies. He matriculates to UCLA in the fall to study mechanical engineering.

What excites you most about college life?

EVAN TERRIO Renaissance Man

D

uring his four years at Crespi, Evan Terrio fit the Renaissance Man moniker, defined by the Webster Dictionary as “a person who has wide interests and is an expert in several areas.” Joining the robotics team in his freshman year, he served as president his junior and senior years. A member of the National Honor and Science Honor Societies, he also participated in Model United Nations, Junior Statesmen of America, Crespi student council and as an arena emcee for the Archdiocese of Los Angeles’ Youth Day. In his spare time, he is the Co-Principal cellist in the Conejo Valley Youth Orchestra. A STEM Cohort for all four years at Crespi, he will be earning a Bachelor of Science in Nursing at Rutgers University in New Jersey.

Of your many accomplishments at Crespi, what stands out most?

I’ll miss the little things like intimate conversations with friends at the lunch table, and playing pick-up games of basketball and volleyball at lunch or after school.

As president of the Robotics Team, I grew the team from 15 students to over 50 students. I lobbied the administration to get a dedicated room for robotics, and now we have a space of our own. We successfully contended in various competitions throughout the valley, and this year made it to the semi-finals twice!

Who was your mentor while at Crespi?

What has been your most thrilling cello performance so far?

Coach White, who had an interest in all players, not only as athletes but in developing good men of character. In the basketball program, we focused on the intellectual part of the game. Coach taught us to trust the process, to learn to control what was in our power to control, to let go of what was not in our control and to do things the right way. I hope to bring the lessons I learned as a Crespi student athlete with me to college and to incorporate the tenets of the Crespi Man. .

f you follow Crespi athletics, you have

certainly heard the name Brandon Williams

SPOTLIGH T ON SENIOR S

’18. Shooting hoops since he was three years

old, the 6’3” point guard emerged as one of the

country’s top prospects out of the 2018 recruiting class, and will be playing for the Arizona Wildcats this fall.

Williams is Crespi’s 2nd all-time leading scorer, and was

selected Mission League MVP in 2018 while leading the Celts

to the league championship. The guard and his Celt teammates also won the California State Championship in 2015 and 2016.

His accomplishments on the court include: Crespi records for

Like many prospective students, Brandon was hesitant to

attend an all-boys high school. However, the tradition of the Crespi Man and the academic standards of the school con-

it to seniors in her Theology course.

After some brainstorming sessions in class, a group of volunteers came forward to help lead the Class of 2018’s Senior Service Project.

Service Awards, two Crespi seniors and beloved Theology teacher Mrs. Anita Rezzo were

honored. On March 20, more than seventy

students, teachers and principals were recognized at this year’s Christian Service Awards Mass, presided

over by Archbishop José H. Gomez at the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angels.

The award is given to select students from each school

in the Archdiocese who exemplify what it means to be of service to others, their school and their community.

The chosen students, Brian McCarthy ’18 and Matthew

Salerno ’18, are examples of what it means to be a Crespi Man. Both students were highly involved in Kairos and various service projects, and together they hosted the first-ever senior class community project.

How becoming a Crespi Man helped Sergio Sylvestre ’09 win on Italy’s biggest stage

technical skills, culminating in the building

of a real-life structure. The class, created as

a supplement to Architecture, explores mechanical concepts and physics problem solving for the

structural environment. A dedicated group of

subjects such as forces, loads, vectors, torque, static equilibrium, mass, friction, tension, compression

and buckling. They performed hands-on projects to learn these concepts, such as testing spaghetti bridges in tension, compression and buckling to derive the formulas which model its behavior.

Drumming to Their Beat

T

his past spring, the Crespi Taiko drumming ensemble,

Crespi’s young drummers were eager to show off their skills to

distinction of being the only high school to compete

Crespi Taiko made it all the way to the final round of the competition, facing off against UC Irvine’s accomplished

ensemble. The Celts were awarded second place in the competition.

Tees the Season

n an effort to connect our supportive community of

alumni, former parents, and current Celt families, Crespi hosts several special events throughout the year. The

first event of this academic year was the annual Golf

Tournament, held once again at North Ranch Country Club.

As golfers anxiously awaited the shotgun start on a blustery morning, Crespi alumnus Jeff Suppan ’93 offered the

golfers Coach Scott Muckey’s golden rule for golf, “Never belittle a ball down the middle.” Suppan also offered an

additional piece of advice, “Swing easy when it’s breezy,”

which was most apropos for a very windy day on the links. /////////////

his year’s Christmas Luncheon, Fashion Show &

Boutique certainly lived up to its moniker, “Sparkle

& Shine,” at the Warner Center Marriott in Woodland

Hills. Chairpersons Candice Stong, mother of Russell Stong

’18, and Jill Kramer, mother of Jonah Kramer ’21, embraced the theme and created a show to remember. More than 250 people watched as Crespi and Louisville students shined on the runway while modeling high fashion and top trends of the season offered by Macy’s in

Sherman Oaks. In true Fashion Show tradition, Crespi seniors and their moms strutted their

stuff, leaving the perfect amount of sparkle. .

respi’s unique Environmental Studies and Outdoor Leadership program allows students the opportunity to not only learn science, but to live it. Over the past several years, Celts have ventured to parts of the world including Machu Picchu, the Amazon, Iceland, Fiji, Mount Kilimanjaro and Costa Rica, where they explored, hiked, surfed, climbed and dived. Crespi English teacher Phillip Griffith takes us along on this year’s Galapagos expedition, led by himself and Director of Athletics Brian Bilek.

The 2018 ESOL Expedition was the club’s second trip to

South America. We departed on Mr. Bilek’s birthday, March

29th, and finished our ten-day trip with a 30-hour trip home

that required us to take three boats, two buses, two flights and included a six-hour delay in Quito, Ecuador. Travel exhaustion aside, this year’s adventure exceeded our expectations and

left an indelible mark on the lives of all 16 students and both chaperones.

The expedition was run by Grand Classroom, who also led

ESOL’s phenomenal trip to Iceland last year. With two days of

travel on each end of the trip, we had eight days “in-country.”

Our first two days were spent in Morochos, which is the rural

countryside outside of Quito, Ecuador. Grand Classroom part-

nered us with Canopy Co., which is a reforestation and carbon offsetting program run by American Peter Shear. For two days

we helped an indigenous village prepare and plant native

species of trees. This practice is not only vital to the local and

global environments, but also an economic resource for many

indigenous communities. We were also given a “cultural show,” in which the families showed us their ritual dances, music and a hilarious game in which the young males slap each other’s rear ends with cotton sashes.

Our five days in the Galapagos were absolutely incredible.

Finished with community service, we got into adventure mode!

Here’s a simple list of the animals we saw up close and personal: seals, blue-footed boobies, giant tortoises, pelicans, manta

rays, eagle rays, white tip sharks, sea turtles and tropical fish

most beautiful way. We also hiked the Sierra Negra

(biggest shield caldera in the world), saw the Muro de Lagrimas (Wall of Tears), visited the Charles Darwin

Breeding Center and snorkeled the Concha Perla. This year’s ESOL Expedition truly was a once-in-a-lifetime

experience, and we all hope that this amazing jewel of

biodiversity can be protected for generations to come.

an honors course available to all students. Those who complete two trips, two seminars and at least one

expedition will receive honors recognition at graduation and on their transcripts.

The gym was filled with prospective students and their parents who listened intently as current Celts spoke eloquently about what they value most about being at Crespi, and how they have grown into mature, Crespi Men. The alumni speakers, Dr. Sam Kalioundji ’97 and Colin Duffy ’03, were excellent examples of the finished product of the Crespi experience. Both spoke to the continuing bonds of brotherhood they share with their classmates and the deep values learned at Crespi.
