FROM THE PRESIDENT

DEAR FRIENDS OF CRESPI,

The 2014-15 school year is now underway. Much has happened

over the summer to prepare for the beginning of classes. One of the

most exciting developments has been the completion of the Technolo-

gy and Resource Center. This project has dramatically transformed the space formerly occupied by the library. We anticipate students being able to use this new space right after the Labor Day holiday.

The assignment to Crespi of three young Carmelites provides strong

evidence of the province’s commitment to the school and its mission as a Catholic all-boys college prep school in the Carmelite tradition.

Father Marlon Mateo, O.Carm., will lead our mission effectiveness

efforts, as well as assist me in a number of ministry functions. He will also work with the Advancement Department. Brothers Mark Sexton and Edgar Varela are interns. They are professed Carmelites who are progressing toward ordination. Interns interrupt their theological

studies for a two year period to be actively involved in ministry. In this case, it means teaching at Crespi, as well as assisting with a variety

of other functions related to the school. We now have five Carmelites assigned to Crespi. What a great gift, as well as an affirmation of the Carmelite commitment to this school.

During the school year, my efforts will be focused on two major un-

dertakings. First, we are in the beginning stages of the development of a new strategic plan. Our strategic planning process is named Vision

2020, to signify our planning for a five year period. We have engaged the board of directors, administrators, teachers, staff, alumni, and parents in the process.

The second focus is on the development of a much needed campus master plan. Initial steps call for writ-

ing a request for proposals (RFP) that will be submitted to a number of architectural firms for bidding. Once we have identified the successful bidder, we will then engage in a process to develop the plan that best utilizes our modest size property.

Stay tuned and stay engaged. We look to you to partner with us as we prepare for Crespi Carmelite High

School’s vibrant future. May Our Lady of Mount Carmel continue to watch over us.

FROM THE PRINCIPAL

GREETINGS CRESPI COMMUNITY:

We regularly describe a Crespi education as a process of develop-

ment and growth. While we emphasize and highlight this experience, the outcomes are often times very impressive. The members of the

class of 2014, for example, are great models of what it means to be a Celt. Besides a very impressive list of college acceptances, nearly 90% of the class matriculated directly into a four-year college or

university, and 99% are attending college. Their accomplishments are

a testament to everyone’s hard work and focus on Crespi’s mission. As

Crespi’s Dean of Men, Brock Livingston, reminded the graduates in his Baccalaureate Address: “the road ahead is difficult, but if you remem-

ber what you learned here and use the skills we taught you, your path

will be clear.” I think this is a great message. As we continue to emphasize this process, or what is known as the Crespi Way, we will certainly see these impressive outcomes from future graduating classes.

While we are proud of the accomplishments of our students and

alums, we are excited to look towards Crespi’s future. Crespi continues to be a leader in male education, and we are excited for the launch of

the Technology and Resource Center (TRC). This innovative space will serve as a destination for Crespi students to learn, play and explore

with state-of-the-art technology while engaging in an environment designed for collaboration. We believe the TRC will serve as a model for other institutions looking for ways to better engage its students.

In addition to providing students with a comfortable and welcoming learning environment, we

will continue to be risk-takers in applying best practices in learning theory for boys. Crespi’s faculty is one of a kind and we are proud of their efforts at bringing out the best in students. Emphasizing

critical-thinking and problem-solving will continue to be a hallmark of a Crespi education along with the development of rich tasks that maximize student learning and enjoyment.

Finally, I would like to thank you for your continued support of Crespi Carmelite High School.

I look forward to continuing to work with you as we integrate all elements of the Crespi Man and carry out our Mission. May Our Lady of Mt. Carmel continue to bless you all.

X Manoa Pouono

W

hen Crespi defensive lineman Victor Alvarez began his

senior year, he hoped to continue his football career in college, but became anxious when he did not receive

calls from recruiters. He soon realized that the college

recruitment process can be a tricky one, with a short window to see his dream of playing at the next level come true.

He turned to Crespi Carmelite athletic guidance counselor and

coach, Manoa Pouono to help him navigate his way through the

process. Coach “P” is dedicated to helping all of the Crespi studentathletes, who put in hard work on the field and in the classroom, realize their dream of playing at the college level.

Pouono began the process with Victor by making sure he was

NCAA eligible at the end of his junior year and registering him with the NCAA clearing house. Next, Coach P and Victor compiled a list of schools that were a good fit both academically and athletically.

Pouono encouraged Victor to be proactive by emailing college coaches

and recruiters, and gave him the tools necessary to craft a well-written email communicating his football skills and academic achievements.

Coach P credits the players and past coaches for his success in

getting Crespi student-athletes recruited. Coach P explains, “Crespi’s long tradition of producing dedicated athletes has created a huge

network between Crespi athletics and college coaches.” One of Coach P’s responsibilities is to manage the relationship between student-

athletes and college coaches in all thirteen sports. He says, “Recruiting is all about the exposure. We get great video from Coach James, and

we create highlight films for the players. We send the videos to our

extensive network of coaches, and they usually like what they see.”

However, talent can only get a student-athlete so far. Pouono empha-

sizes there is one thing that trumps talent: “Grades are most important.

College coaches look for that high GPA because it demonstrates work ethic.” Coach P, along with Director of Counseling Sharon Barkins-

Wasson, ensure that the student-athletes are on top of their academics, so grades are never an issue in the college recruiting process.

By the end of senior year, Alvarez received an offer and scholar-

ship to play at Western State Colorado University. Coach P is happy

to report that Victor is doing well and is in competition for a starting defensive position. Coach P’s extraordinary commitment as a coach and faculty member is building a legacy for student-athletes like

Dr. Brahim Wins R.O.S.E. Award

respi science teacher Dr. Sherryline Jogie-Brahim was presented with the R.O.S.E. Teaching Award

for the 2013-2014 school year at the faculty picnic.

The R.O.S.E. award is given annually to the teacher

of the year as voted upon by the Crespi faculty. R.O.S.E. stands for Representing Old School Educators and has been given

since the 2006-2007 school year. This award was originally

created by then-Vice Principal Dr. Jonathan Schild. The criteria for a winner includes dedication, being ubiquitous, moral, and

articulate, possessing a commanding presence, as well as being challenging and persistent.

Dr. Brahim has worked at Crespi for six years and has taught

AP Chemistry, Honors Chemistry, Chemistry, and Biochemistry.

Dr. Brahim received her Ph.D. in Chemistry with an emphasis

in Analytical Chemistry from the University of the West Indies after which she pursued post-doctoral research at the medical

campus of Virginia Commonwealth University. As a result of Dr.

arrival of three new Carmelites who will be joining the faculty and staff this year. Sent from the Order of the Carmelites out of Darien, Illinois, Father Marlon Mateo, O.Carm., Brother Mark Sexton, O.Carm., and Brother Edgar Varela,

O.Carm, are settling into their new Encino home and looking forward to working with the student and parent body.

After years of teaching at Mount Carmel High School in

Chicago and one year at Salpointe Catholic High School

in Tucson, Fr. Mateo has been named Crespi’s Director of

Mission Effectiveness. He is responsible for ensuring that the school maintains

a strong focus on its core mission and identity as a Catholic college preparatory high school in the Carmelite tradition. Fr. Marlon was born in the Philippines and spent some years in Canada before coming to the United States.

“I am very excited to be part of the Crespi Carmelite family starting this new

school year,” said Fr. Marlon. “This is an exciting time for the school and the

Province of the Most Pure Heart of Mary to recommit ourselves as a Religious

Order to the mission of the school to educate young men around San Fernando

Valley and the neighboring area. The enthusiasm of my fellow Carmelites at the priory and school is a gift to be shared to our students, faculty, staff, coaches, parents, friends, donors and graduates to make sure we educate and nurture Crespi Men beyond the classroom walls, athletic fields and school campus.”

Brother Mark and Brother Edgar are currently serving as interns as part of

the Carmelite formation process. This internship is usually a two year period where the Brothers live and work in a Carmelite community. Crespi was

fortunate to be chosen as the internship opportunity for Brother Mark and Brother Edgar.

Bro. Mark comes from the New York area via Florida. He made his profes-

sion of vows on June 10, 2013, and studied theology at Catholic University of America last year. He is teaching Biology and Yearbook this year.

Bro. Edgar is from Phoenix and was professed on June 11, 2012. He has

also studied theology at Catholic University of America for the past two years.

Brother Edgar is teaching Algebra 1. Both have studied at Loyola Marymount University’s School of Education.

When asked about the significance of their presence on campus, Willam J.

Harry, O.Carm., Prior Provincial said, “Our goal is that the experience of both

Carmelites will help them make a good decision about their religious vocation as well as choice of ministries. Crespi Carmelite High School, during its more

than 50 years of providing quality Catholic education, has benefited from the presence of many Carmelites. Please welcome the latest three!” .

Christopher Bruni

R

ising Sophomore Christopher Bruni had no trouble adjusting to the busy life of

a Crespi High School student. He maintained

a 4.0 GPA both semesters of his freshman year

and earned a spot on the Principal’s Honor Roll.

Christopher was the recipient of Department Awards in

Science for his excellence in Biology, and Theology. Out-

side of academics, Christopher was a member of the Crespi

Wrestling Team and earned the “Rookie of the Year” Award.

In the spring, he played on the JV Volleyball Team. He was

recognized for his academic achievements in both sports by

earning the Scholar Athlete Award. Christopher is also active in several clubs. He is a member of the STEM Cohort, the Robotics Team, and California Scholarship Federation.

Peter Christiansen

P

eter Christiansen is a rising junior. As he gears up to

take the SAT, Peter strives to continue his quality work

in the classroom. Peter has

been rewarded for his strong work ethic and knowledge

of classroom material by racking up eight Department Awards including AP Macro-

economics, AP World History and Honors

Algebra 2. Outside of the classroom, Peter

has played two consecutive years of football for the freshman and JV teams. Peter gives his time to volunteer at Crespi events like

CAPER and the Mother’s Tea, but his altruistic efforts are not limited to campus life. He also volunteers at soup kitchens and homeless shelters in impoverished areas. Peter’s

work in the community and his aptitude in

the classroom speaks volumes to his development as a Crespi Man.

Jon-Luc Dargenton

J

on-Luc Dargenton is headed into his senior year at Crespi. His

impressive academic resume reflects a cumulative 4.0 unweighted GPA, nine

honors classes, eleven Department Awards, membership

on the Academic Decathlon Team and the

President’s Award for Educational Excellence.

Colleges will be impressed with his extracurricular activities such as the Key Club,

National Honors Society, Crespi Carmelite

Players, Mock Trial and the CORE Team. He has leadership experience from serving as

both Sophomore and Junior Class President, and will be serving as ASB Chief of Com-

missioners this year. As if not busy enough,

this senior is a member of the Crespi soccer

team in the winter and volleyball team in the spring. Jon-Luc hopes to attend Cal Berkeley or Johns Hopkins University next year. .

My family and I decided I would come to America in junior high. When we started

searching, I looked at three schools. One of the reasons we chose Crespi was because it was

in California. I also wanted to be in small classes. But the coolest reason was that I would be the first Chinese student to enroll and attend Crespi and that would be a challenge.

college and in my future career as an engineer. Above all, I learned not only how to play drums, but also about humility.

experiences sums up the ESOL trip to Peru over spring break.

The trip was a way to explore the world in a whole new way. I was able to experience some of the most beautiful and breathtaking scenery in the world and at the same time got to grow some great relationships with teachers and fellow classmates that I did not have before the trip. It was a fun-filled jam-

country traveling from its rural towns to large cities all the way things of his country but at the same time helped us to see the beauty in the world as a whole. It gave me memories to

remember for the rest of my life. Whether it was first stepping off the plane into a foreign country, trying to communicate

(often unsuccessfully) in a foreign language, seeing one of the Seven Wonders of the World, or even watching someone eat

some indigenous worms out of a tree trunk. In the end this trip gave me more than I was ever expecting to get out of it. This

was just another of the great opportunities Crespi has provided for me that really allowed me to grow and mature as a person.

It was something new for me and something that I think everyone should try to experience in their lives.” .

t was the end of March when I was catching up with my good friend and classmate Glen

Magpiong ’78, coach of the Wellesley High

basketball team, on the phone. It had been a

month since his team had ended their season and I knew Glen would soon be onto his next thing. I

asked him about his plans going forward into spring

and summer. He responded by telling me I would be receiving an email in the next week or two.

Glen had an assistant coach, Paul Seaver, who lost

his life to ALS (Lou Gehrig’s disease) in February 2013.

Glen, his father Earl, and several of Earl’s friends de-

cided to ride across country and call their ride “Tour 2 Cure” with the intention of raising awareness and

money for ALS research as a tribute to Paul. What

started out with a modest goal of $5K earned more than $40K as they rode the 3,073 miles from St. Augustine, Florida to San Clemente, California in 50 days.

dig in” and do what is necessary. Glen’s wife, Jane, has recently joined the Crespi Board of Directors after a successful business career holding senior

leadership positions with banking and investment organizations. .

students with a collegiate experience while at Crespi.

X Tim Huckaby

Software Innovator Opens Doors for Students

lose to the Beach in Carlsbad, CA, Crespi alumnus Tim Huckaby ’80 is bringing a taste of Silicon Valley to

Southern California. Tim is the founder and chairman of Interknowlogy, a tech company that specializes in

user interaction design. Tim created Interknowlogy after working on a product team at Microsoft in the late 90’s, and generously offered to give me a tour of the company’s office space.

Though most of his projects are labeled top secret, Tim gave

me a sneak peak of a project the company developed for Nike, owner of Converse shoes.

Interknowlogy was tasked with building a digital retail ex-

perience for the worldwide launch of three new shoe lines for

Converse. Using large video screens, users were able to physically manipulate the images of the shoes on the screen. When

a particular style was selected, an image of a celebrity wearing that shoe appeared on the screen, allowing the viewer a 365 degree view of the shoe.

Tim has used his success with Interknowlogy to give back

to Crespi. Last spring, he and his wife Kelly attended Crespi’s

annual CAPER Gala and contributed to the silent auction with

sporting event tickets and the opportunity for young Celts inter-

ested in software development to visit Interknowlogy. The Crespi students spent a full day at the facility engaging with engineers known as “interknowlogists,” learning about new projects in

development, testing the software and gaining insight to this cutting-edge industry.

When asked about his impression of the day, Huckaby replied,

“The students did get to see a piece of software that I had never

seen…so secret my own people are afraid so show me because I’ll talk! It’s a multi-million dollar project, millions of lines of code, extremely high tech and complex.” He continued, “I knew they (the students) ‘snapped in’ and were having a good time when

they started getting interactive, asking questions, making com-

ments. I think it worked out just great. I was very proud of our

young engineers, too; who really took them under their wing.” .

X Quinn Delgado

Building a Legacy In and Out of the Pool

R

ecently, head water polo coach and

economics teacher, Mr. Quinn Delgado, received the Max Prep Sports 2014 Double

Goal Coach Award. This award is given to

a coach who strives to win, while pursuing the even

more important goal of teaching life lessons through sports. This is exactly what Mr. Delgado instills in his players and students.

Throughout most of his life, Mr. Delgado played

for coaches who did not match his own personal

commitment. One coach changed all of this. Coach

Richard Corso, the current UC Berkley Women’s Water Polo Coach and the 1996 Men’s Olympic Coach,

became Mr. Delgado’s mentor and made him believe he could compete at the highest level. This is the

reason Mr. Delgado continued to play throughout his college career at Pepperdine University. In his

role at Crespi, Mr. Delgado pursues his love of water polo and passion for teaching, and acts as a motivating mentor for players and students alike.

Under the tutelage of Mr. Delgado, the Crespi

water polo team has made CIF playoffs for the last three years. This year, Mr. Delgado has scheduled three high-end tournaments with tougher oppo-

nents to help prepare the team to advance to the

next level in CIF playoffs. Crespi wishes Mr. Delgado and the team the best of luck this season. .

Crespi alumnus London Perrantes ’13 dishes under the basket against ACC rival North Carolina.

London Perrantes

London Perrantes ’13 (pictured) exceeded all expectations his freshman year at the University of Virginia. He played in 37 games averaging 5.5 points,

2.2 rebounds and 3.8 assists per game. He ranked 10th in the ACC in assists per game and second all-time among Virginia freshmen with 140 assists throughout the season. He was named to the All-ACC Freshman team, recognizing his outstanding play as a true freshman.

Joe Fauria

Joe Fauria ’08 was picked up by the Detroit Lions in 2013. After racking up 88 total receptions, 1,100 yards and 29 touchdowns in his career at UCLA,

Joe set his sights on the NFL where he made a name for himself as a tight end.

As a rookie, Joe caught 18 passes for 207 yards and 7 touchdowns. He ranked 7th amongst NFL tight ends in touchdowns.

Chris Harper

Chris Harper ’12 has quickly become one of the top receivers in the Pac-12 at UC Berkeley. Going into his junior year, Chris is already Cal’s leader in

receptions (111), receiving yards (1396), and receiving touchdowns (7).

This is his second year in a row on the Biletnikoff Award Watch List, honoring college football’s most outstanding receiver.

Ryon Healy

Ryon Healy ’10 continued his baseball career at the University of Oregon after graduating from Crespi. Healy had his best season his Junior year compiling a .333 average with 11 home runs and a school record 56 RBI. He was drafted in 2013 by the Oakland Athletics as the 100th overall pick. He is currently playing for the Class A+ Stockton Ports in the California League. .

Water Polo Coach Quinn Delgado is continuing to steer the Crespi Water Polo team in the right direction, leading the team to Mission League playoffs for the third consecutive year, with an overtime win against Notre Dame. Despite playing some of the best talent in Southern California, Crespi sported a 17-13 record, including wins over Long Beach Poly and Oaks Christian. The win over Long Beach Poly in the CIF-SS Div. 1 Playoffs advanced them to play four-time defending CIF champions Mater Dei, where the Celts’ playoff run came to an end. The team is stacked with young talent, ensuring a bright future for the water polo program.

Lacrosse The Crespi Lacrosse Team continued to thrive as a powerhouse of the Mission League last year. The team capped off its season with an 11-6 overall record and 5-3 Mission League record. For the third straight season, the team made the playoffs, only to lose a nail-biter to Oak Park 10-9. Junior Alex Dixon shared the honor of being Mission League MVP. Eddie Paredes, Julian Warne, Jackson Briscoe, and Montana Giffen earned 1st Team Honors. Montana Giffen will continue his lacrosse career at Adams State, where he earned a scholarship.

Swimming The Crespi Swim Team finished second in the Mission League for the fourth consecutive year. After winning the 2014 Royal Swimming Invitational, the team continued to shatter school records. Four Varsity swimmers set a new record in the 200 Freestyle Relay during the CIF Division Two Prelims. Devin Morris broke the school record in the 100 Breaststroke during Mission League Finals. Blair Simpkins shined in his final year at Crespi by earning All- American consideration in the 100 Butterfly.

Baseball The Crespi Baseball team finished the season with an even 14-14 record, going 5-7 in league. Despite playing in one of the best leagues in California, the Crespi team won three of their last four league games to make the playoffs including a win over #9 ranked Alemany. Crespi continued their playoff run with a win over Long Beach Poly in the first round, only to lose 2-0 in a close game against CIF favorite Agoura. Crespi also notched a win against Harvard- Westlake, ranked as the #3 team in the nation.

Basketball For the first time in school history, the Crespi Basketball team played in the championship games of three different pre-season tournaments: The Marin Catholic

Tournament (2nd place), the Mission Prep Classic (2nd place), and the San Fernando Valley Invitational (Champions). During league play, Crespi defeated highly ranked Chaminade in overtime, after being down nine points with three minutes left. With an impressive 19-11 record overall, the team automatically qualified for the playoffs, making it the 8th time in a row the team has extended its season.

Cross Country The Crespi Cross Country Team continued its success in the Mission League and tournament races this past season. Crespi took 1st place in the D4 Woodbridge Invitational Sweepstakes Race. The team placed 2nd in the Mission League, placing ahead of Alemany, HarvardWestlake, Notre Dame, and Chaminade. Warren Bonilla achieved First Team All-Mission League for his outstanding season. Joe Yuengert proved to be one of the best runners in Southern California, earning All-Mission League and All-CIF honors.

Football The Crespi Football team took full advantage of its two league wins over Loyola and Bishop Amat to earn a spot in the Pac-5 Playoffs, only to lose to perennial powerhouse Mission Viejo in the first round. The Celts had several standout players this year, and the team touts 11 seniors going on to play college football. Not only did the team have 13 players with a 4.0+ GPA, but the cumulative GPA was an impressive 3.12. The team is looking forward to the transition into the new league consisting of Bishop Amat, Loyola, Serra, Notre Dame Chaminade, and Alemany.

Soccer The Crespi Soccer team finished with an overall record of 14-9-2, with an impressive 7-4-1 league record. The road to the playoffs was dramatic, including key goals by team leaders. Crespi defeated Alemany 3-0 at home with a beautiful combination goal from the Morales

twins. Playing short-handed against Harvard-Westlake, the Morales twins were the heroes again, setting up a goal off of a corner kick to lead the team to a 1-0 victory.

Finally, senior Aleks Berkolds did his best Michael Jordan impression by scoring two goals against Loyola after coming down with the flu. The team produced a first round CIF playoff win against top ranked El Toro.

Golf The Crespi Golf team not only grew together as a team, but also grew as men. The parents said it was the most rewarding experience to have their young men come home and talk about the bonds they had formed with their teammates, coaches and even opponents. The team held the first annual Golf Retreat, where they came together as a team and talked about what they desire to do with their futures, as Crespi Men, husbands, fathers, and members of the community. Justin Munro found his niche and his passion on the golf course, earning him the Most Improved Player Award, while Michael Short earned the MVP Award.

Wrestling The Crespi Wrestling team had another strong year in the Mission League as well as in tournaments. The team took their talents to the Asics Challenge, where Joshua Romero took 3rd place. Zachary Beach placed 6th in the Black Watch Invitational. Crespi had five Mission League placers who qualified for CIF: Joshua Romero (1st place), Zachary Beach (2nd place), Armani Cook (2nd place), Joseph Barboa (2nd place), and Josh Lesaca (3rd place). Joshua Romero’s success continued past CIF where he took 4th place in the Masters tournament. Loaded with young talent, the Crespi Wrestling team looks ahead with promise and determination as they journey into next season.

Volleyball After losing several key seniors last year, the Crespi Volleyball team consisted of sophomores and juniors only. The team’s 2-10 record does not represent progress, development, and hard work that the young players put

forth this past season. The team’s real potential showed in their games against rival Chaminade, and provided glimpses of the bright future that lies ahead for the Crespi Volleyball program. Now that the young players have a full season of Varsity Volleyball under their belts, they eagerly await the spring season ahead.

Track Nate Washington was the 2014 CIF Division III Champion in the Triple Jump and qualified for the CIF State Track Championships. One spot away from making the finals, Nate finished with seasonal best of 47’0.50. Amir Patterson qualified for the World Junior Track and Field Championships in Eugene, finishing second at the USATF Junior Outdoor Championships with an effort of 63-2 3/4 to qualify to represent the United States. Amir is attending UCLA this fall. Senior Joe Yuengert earned All-Mission league honors while junior Dimitri Fisher finished 4th in the Mission League. Sophomores Teddy Ma and Austin Ojagho were both Mission League finalists. .

room designed for architecture, complete with drafting tables

and collaborative work space. With young students experiencing a seating arrangement they hadn’t before seen, Brian faced a

group of students who collaborated and talked even when those

behaviors weren’t encouraged in his traditional geometry classes.

Adapting to the challenge, Brian redesigned an existing structure called Basketball Math to capture the collaborative spirit of his class. In Basketball Math, students complete timed worksheets

to determine how many shots they could get to toss a ball into a basket resulting in bonus points on an upcoming test. In Brian’s

version, students became part of a team determined by their seat at the drafting table. In the new version of Basketball Math, shot

respi’s Expected Schoolwide Learning Results aim for

every student to become a Moral and Spiritual Person,

a Productive and Mature member of society, and a Lifelong Learner; in short, we call it the Crespi Man.

In the case of ’98 alumnus Brian Bilek, Crespi was successful in

molding a Crespi Man, and we are blessed to have him on campus as a role model for our students.

It would take three employees to cover what Brian does for

Crespi. In the 2013-14 school year alone, he taught two sections of Geometry and two levels of Architecture, coordinated the

production of the yearbook, served as head coach of the freshman football team, worked as the Assistant Athletic Director, designed

and published the fall, winter, and spring sports programs, and he administrated the social networking efforts of Crespi athletics.

When Crespi first introduced architecture classes, Brian faced

opportunities are awarded to teams instead of individuals, and

each member of the team is responsible for the knowledge of how to get correct answers during the table challenges. In this one

instance, Brian solved a classroom management problem, capitalized on the value of competition in the classroom, and encouraged positively collaborative learning.

With an architecture degree and a background in construction,

Brian is uniquely qualified to bring ideas to life on campus. Dur-

ing the 2009-2010 school year, Brian’s Architecture II classes were given the assignment to design a structure to house a statue of

Mary that had been displaced as part of another school building project. School administration selected a winning proposal, and using the winning plans, Brian coordinated a group of football players from the class of 2010 to construct the Grotto of Mary near the east end zone of our athletic field.

During the 2013-14 school year, Brian had to switch classrooms

as part of the construction of the Technology and Resource Center.

Brian used this move as a way to empower his students to have an immediate effect on the learning environment on campus. Brian

challenged his Architecture II classes to study the plans for the new

classroom and design their ideal learning environment. The students used building plans to draft their own concepts based on the actual measurements of the classroom space and the necessary furniture.

As a teacher, Brian is an innovator and a leader, and his contri-

butions to the Crespi community are inestimable. A model of the Crespi Man, Brian’s efforts ensure the continuation of our tradition of excellence. .

he Crespi Advancement Team continues to build and refine its vision

for investing in future leaders, and has implemented feedback from the

Crespi community in order to best engage parents, volunteers, students and donors. We’d like to inform you of a few exciting changes that will take place in the 2014-2015 school year.

The Annual Crespi Golf Tournament took place on Monday, October

13th. The golfers gave a resounding thumbs up to switching the tournament to the Fall

and a great day on the links was enjoyed by all. The Hall of Fame Induction and Dinner will now take place in January instead of in October. On Sunday, December 14th, the

Annual Christmas Luncheon, Boutique and Fashion Show will return to the Four Seasons in Westlake Village with the perfect mixture of new vendors. These changes have been made to allow for greater participation from our Crespi families and alumni.

In addition to the new structure of events, the Advancement Team is focused on

taking corporate giving to the next level. We are committed to actively seeking corporate donations and corporate matching funds in order to strengthen Crespi’s financial resources. A committee made up of parent volunteers has been established to strategically procure donations within the Crespi community and beyond.

Finally, the structure of the Advancement Team has taken on a new look. Brett Nordyke

will remain at the helm of the department as the Director of Advancement and oversee

Alumni Relations. Gregoria Leoni has come on board full-time as the Director of Annual

Giving along with Peter Jeensalute as the Director of Public Relations and Marketing. Olesya Senicheva continues to be our Database Administrator and the Assistant to the President.

Debbie McGaughey will continue as our Events Coordinator. The department is pleased to welcome Fr. Marlin Mateo, O.Carm., as its newest addition. In addition to his spiritual

guidance, Fr. Marlon will be focusing on the scholarship program and our student recipients.

What does all of this have to do with investing in future leaders? Our number one

priority is to ensure the financial sustainability of Crespi Carmelite and to fund programs

that benefit our future leaders: academics, technology, spiritual development, music, fine arts and athletics.

The Crespi Way t Crespi Carmelite High School, pursuing an ethical and moral life is a key component in the process of becoming a Crespi Man. As faculty, staff, parents, students, and board members, we all call ourselves Celts. As such, we each bear a responsibility for not only modeling persistence, grit, and high standards, but also for building Crespi’s reputation as an academic institution.

Holding ourselves to a high standard of ethical behavior while also looking out for each other is the Crespi Way. This means we nurture an environment of mutual respect.
