FROM THE CHAIR
X Judith Cannavo-McKeever
DEAR FRIENDS OF CRESPI,
Thank you for the partnership we’ve formed whose purpose is to contribute to the
development of all Crespi students as they become men of Carmel, achieve their best in mind and body, and become citizens of the world. Without your generosity, Crespi Carmelite would not shine as brightly as the only all boys college preparatory high
school with top notch academics, university level technology, limitless opportunities for scientific and artistic creativity, and championship athletics, all rooted in the Carmelite charism of community, service and prayer. On behalf of the entire Crespi community, faculty, administration, the Board of Directors, and the Board of Members, we thank you, our donors, for allowing the students’ dreams to become a reality. Please take
the time to review this 2014-2015 annual report to learn of some of the projects and changes taking place at Crespi.
A major change occurred on July 1st when the first lay President of Crespi took
office. Throughout Crespi’s fifty-six year history, a Carmelite priest has led our school.
With the retirement of our beloved Fr. Thomas Batsis, the search led us to Dr. Kenneth Foersch who promises to lead us forward with his contagious enthusiasm. You’ll also meet our Board of Directors and the Board of Members, read about Vision 2020, the
five-year strategic plan developed by sixty-five stakeholders devoted to Crespi’s future, and learn of the academic and artistic achievements of our students.
As we look to the future, I think of tradition on one hand and change on the other.
We pray that you, our friends and supporters, maintain your belief in the Carmelite
tradition and Crespi’s mission with your financial generosity. Concurrently, we ask that you philosophically join our esteemed faculty and administration as they continue to challenge and inspire our students to accomplish seemingly impossible goals.
“When the winds of change blow, some people build walls and others build windmills.”

FROM THE PRESIDENT
DEAR FRIENDS,
Besides being honored and humbled to be
the first lay president to serve the Crespi
Community, I am eager to take on the challenges ahead. It is truly an exciting time to be a Celt.
Our recently adopted strategic plan Vision 2020 will be a guiding force, motivating constant
growth throughout the next five years. As we
implement the strategic plan, we will draw on the 56-year tradition of Crespi Carmelite High School and the eight century old Carmelite Charism of prayer, community and service.
Due to the substantial support of philanthropists
like you, the Technology and Resource Center
(TRC) has rapidly become a hub for learning and
community-building on campus. Currently, we are rolling out the 1:1 MacBook Air Program. Crespi
is now known as an “Apple Campus,” which many consider to be the gold standard of educational technology. Undoubtedly, the addition of the
TRC and the 1:1 program will better position our students for their futures.
On behalf of the entire Crespi Family, I want
to thank each of you for your continual support
as we educate young men for a life of leadership through prayer, community and justice. May
our Lady of Mount Carmel watch over you and your families.
Let’s make it a great year to be a Celt! Sincerely,
Dr. Kenneth Foersch President, Crespi Carmelite High School

FROM THE PRINCIPAL
X Dr. Jonathan Schild
GREETINGS CRESPI COMMUNITY:
What a great time to be a Celt! Last year began with the opening of the
Technology & Resource Center – a state-of-the-art space for students that, as
evidenced by the incredible student and faculty use through out the year, has become the academic hub of the campus; and concluded with a State
Championship in Basketball – Crespi’s first ever team State Title. Between
these two marquee events, we witnessed Celts flourish in the classroom and in their efforts to develop the tenets of the Crespi Man.
As you can see, there is a lot to be proud of. Crespi continues to build on its
singular mission to develop quality young men and it is through the efforts of
everyone associated with the school that we are able to achieve such ambitious
goals. The newest members of Crespi’s Alumni Association are incredible examples of what it means to be a Celt. They demonstrated gritty persistence and a joyful
collaborative spirit to reach their collegiate dreams. Members of the Class of 2015 have matriculated into several of the countries top colleges and universities
including Harvard, University of Pennsylvania, UC Berkeley, UCLA, USC, Boston University, and the list goes on. What is also impressive about this year’s 111
graduated seniors is that they received over $7.2 million in scholarships and aid. We are proud of their accomplishments and wish them well in their college endeavors. Crespi continues to grow and push the envelope of innovation. This year Crespi will introduce a new language to incoming freshmen – coding, and implement a 1:1 Learning Initiative, which
allows every student use of a MacBook Air as part of the curriculum. A lot of planning has gone into the development of these
endeavors, but we see them as critical shifts. Learning and teaching practices have to change to meet the needs of the millennial generation who will undoubtedly experience an even more technology-centric workplace by the time they graduate college.
In addition, Crespi will begin to implement the Board-approved Strategic Plan: Vision 2020. We are very thankful to the more than
70 parents, alumni, faculty, staff, and administrators who worked diligently to build a solid five-year roadmap for Crespi. Vision 2020
sets out some bold and important goals for the school. All of us at Crespi look forward to working very hard to see these goals come to fruition. By doing so, we will ensure a bright future for the next generation of Celts.
As always, thank you for your continued support of Crespi Carmelite High School. May Our Lady of Mt. Carmel continue to watch
over you all. GO CELTS!
Sincerely,
Dr. Jonathan Schild, Principal

Getting to Know Crespi’s New President
I
n a historic move for Crespi Carmelite High School, The Board of Members named Dr. Kenneth Foersch as the first lay President of the school on
July 1, 2015. “We believe Dr. Foersch will provide the necessary leadership to move Crespi Carmelite to the next level of excellence,” said The Very
Reverend William Harry, Carmelite Provincial and Chair of Crespi’s Board of Members. “We think he will work well with the current administration and
faculty to ensure that Crespi maintains a holistic program which prepares its students for their futures.”
The careful and exhaustive search for the next president was conducted by
the Board of Directors. “Dr. Foersch comes to our campus with a deep and
distinguished educational career and an outstanding educational background,”
said Judith Cannavo-McKeever, Chair of Crespi’s Board of Directors. “The Board is confident he will continue Crespi’s tradition of developing spiritually and
intellectually-focused young men and guide the school to new heights of achievement and excellence.”
Dr. Foersch served as the Principal of St. Andrew Catholic School in Old
Pasadena. Prior to that post, he was Assistant Principal, Dean of Students,
teacher and football coach at Servite High School in Anaheim. He obtained a
Doctorate of Education from the University of Southern California, and earned
his Master’s degree in Education Administration from California State University Fresno where he also went to undergraduate school.

The Most Pure Heart of Mary Province The Most Pure Heart of Mary Province (PCM) has its roots in the arrival of two German Carmelites in Louisville, Kentucky in 1864, more than 150 years ago. They had travelled from their Carmelite monastery in Straubing, Germany. From Louisville, foundations were made in Indiana, Kansas, Ontario, Western Kentucky, Maryland, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, and Illinois. By 1890, there was enough stable growth that the province was officially established. Eventually Carmelite ministries were established in Arizona, Texas, and Virginia. In 1949 missions were established in Perú and then Chile. In California, the prior general asked the PCM province to take responsibility for St. Raphael’s parish and Mount Carmel High School in Los Angeles from the St. Elias Province which was then to be concentrated on the East Coast of the United States. Not long after, the Archdiocese of Los Angeles asked the province to establish an all-male school in the San Fernando Valley, dedicated to the Franciscan explorer Juan Crespi. In 1995, the Carmelites began working the Diocese of Torreón, Mexico. At the 2014 provincial chapter they officially established the province in the Central American country of El Salvador.

he has been recognized as an AP Scholar with

Scout who led the Crespi academic decathlon team to a gold-place finish in science at last spring’s competition. Eric appreciates that Crespi puts a strong emphasis on community service and
constantly provides service opportunities, such as Christmas at
Crespi or volunteer trips with ESOL. Says Eric of his favorite part about attending Crespi “My favorite is the close knit community.
My experience with students and teachers is amazing and I get to
be around great people every day. I know Crespi has prepared me for the next level of education.”
Maxim Romanovici
I
f junior Maxim Romanovici had to describe Crespi in
three words, they would be
“friendship, respect and fun.”
These qualities are evident on
campus, in extra-curriculars and in
Maxim’s biggest passion, water polo. As a member of
the Celt water polo team, Max broke the scoring records his freshman and sophomore years. Last March, he was selected to play in the 19 & Under Division of the
European Championships for his native country of
Moldova. Maxim thinks that Crespi is designed in a way that allows everyone to find themselves. “At Crespi,
everyone is treated like a brother, which helps students
feel comfortable and learn better,” said Max. Like many of his peers, his other priorities include academics and saving up for a car, but in the coming year he is most anticipating an exciting game against Notre Dame.
Ryan Lee
R

him. He is preparing for his
Level 9 Certificate of Merit Test in piano, which is one of the
highest levels of proficiency. Throw
that on top of playing baseball for Crespi and
maintaining a high GPA, and Ryan has a lot on his plate.
According to Ryan, the secret to his success is being fully dedicated to everything he is doing, and to juggle things as efficiently as possible. One of Ryan’s favorite parts
about Crespi is the school spirit, and he is most excited about having new experiences in his senior year. When asked about the Crespi curriculum, Ryan explained,
“Crespi does not pin you to excel in just one subject. Crespi encourages students to be themselves and
allows them to pursue any of the arts, whether it is
journalism, architecture or philosophy, just to name a
few.” He continued, “The TRC (Technology & Resource
Center) has helped me and many other students to reach our full potential. I have used the TRC many times

T
he facilities team was kept busy this summer oversee-
ing improvements to the Admissions Suite, The Crespi
Chapel, classrooms and the weight room.
The Chapel has been moved to the main school building
to be closer to the heart of the campus, giving students a quiet, contemplative space to pray and reflect in the Carmelite tradition.
New flooring, furniture, a fresh coat of paint, and an
inviting reception area for applicant families were installed
to give the Admissions Suite a refreshed and chic new look. The Chapel has been moved to the main school building to
give Crespi students an accessible space to pray and reflect. Several of the classrooms have undergone a mini-make-
over. Rooms 1, 2, 13 and 14 received the latest in in-room air conditioners and heaters. They are exceptionally quiet
and do not protrude from the exterior walls. Additionally, rooms 2 and 17 received new desks, conducive to a boyfriendly learning environment.
The weight room expanded its size by over 1000 sq. ft.
and coaches Troy Thomas and Jess Garner have a new air-conditioned office space. Four double racks, eight
benches, eight dip attachments, and eight glute/ham
benches were added to keep our Crespi men in excellent physical condition. The final touch to this makeover was
a coat of paint to keep our weight room smelling new and fresh – at least for the first month of school! .

Lucidity The cold mist sprays on the weather haze The weather inferno burns of passions great; In twisted barbs of stings and of a fiery state Relief of the rain runs rampant its phase.
Swift the fires go as they come, Yet the battle scars have not run. From the armies that once had spun And actions told that will never be undone. Droplets dripping down the dilapidated domiciles Paints a bleached canvas from ashen materials strewn. The Thunder God whistles his mighty tune Outpouring Adam’s ale with raging rile. But the rain is constant, ineludible, in the rippling river, Soothing and charming with its melodic sound And pleasuring charred skins with its touch so unbound. Oh what the rain delivers!

wo years ago, Fr. Tom Batsis,
O. Carm. envisioned a strategic planning process that would
develop a long range plan for the future of the school. Under this
directive, a group of 65 Crespi parents, faculty, staff, administrators and board
members generously gave their time and
talents to dissect the structure and essence
of Crespi Carmelite High School. Hundreds of hours later, guided by Dr. Anthony
Sabatino of Loyola Marymount University
and the leadership of Crespi parents Whitney and Michael Salerno, this five year strategic
plan was born. And beginning with the 2015 academic year, it will be put into action. Crespi’s ongoing development will be
guided by the ideas and strategies set forth in this plan. And, depending on variables
such as funding, personnel, student interest
and time, the school will strive to accomplish all the goals suggested.
Board of Directors Chair Judy Cannovo
had this to say about the plan, “What
incredible opportunities await the Crespi
family in the next five years! Normally, when you hear the term “2020,” it’s usually in
the context of hindsight. But there is nothing about looking back with this plan; we have a brilliant future before us as set forth in this strategic plan. Stay tuned!”

REUNION
A Trip Down Memory Lane
T
he Crespi Class of 1975 held its 40-Year Reunion on campus this summer. More than 80 spirited guests came together to reminisce, introduce spouses, award prizes and rock the night away to some
throwback tunes from the seventies. On hand to greet the alumni were President Dr. Kenneth Foersch, Principal
Dr. Jonathan Schild, Athletic Director Russell White and
Varsity Football Coach Troy Thomas. The surprise guest of
the evening was former A.P. English Teacher Patricia Brown. The success of the evening was due in no small part to the
efforts of the reunion committee:
Ron Bisciglia, Ken Buttke, Dave Gauthier, R.D. McDonnell,
Joe Sepe, Steve Scheper and John Toehill.
RD McDonnell, A.I.A., shares his experience from that night:
“I laughed, I cried. The statute of limitations had certainly ‘run out’ because the stories were flowing like river rapids as the
Class of 1975 gathered on the Crespi campus for the first time in
40 years.” Several classmates told old stories that brought back
fond memories and the sharing of some stories shed light on past mysteries. Testimonials included personal stories about teachers and coaches that had a positive influence on a young man's life. Attending the reunion gave me the opportunity to reconnect

with my old high school buddies and develop new friendships with classmates that I didn't even hang with in high school.
Business associates are amazed that I am still in touch with so
many high school friends. There seems to be a special bond that comes with being a Celt.
Sometimes it's important to return to your roots, to remind y
ou where you came from. The education I received and the
relationships I built continue to be a tremendous influence on
who I am today. The next time you have an opportunity to attend your reunion, I recommend you go and I guarantee you will find it to be a fulfilling experience...no regrets.
I am hoping that submitting this essay on my reunion experience
will serve as an acceptable make-up for the four detentions that I still owe from my senior year. What do you say, Mr. King?” .

Rob Kodama to Focus on Admissions
A
fter a 20 year tenure as head soccer coach, Rob Kodama has stepped down in order to focus his attention on Crespi’s successful
international student program and on his
expanding role as Director of Admissions. Crespi’s
soccer program made the CIF quarterfinals CIF in his 2nd year as head coach, and Kodama now has more wins than any coach in school history (final record: 210-190-73).
Highlights of Coach Kodama’s career include
coaching two players who were drafted into Major
League Soccer: Taylor Canel ’03 by the LA Galaxy and
Craig Nitti ’10 by the Vancouver Whitecaps. Over thirty Celts have gone on to play collegiate soccer under his direction. In 2006, the Celts won the Mission League
title by scoring two goals in the last seven minutes of the game against Loyola.
Said Coach Kodama, “As a coach, my greatest
accomplishment has been the ability to try and do
what I hope someone will do for my own kids; set an example, teach players about the process of success, the value of hard work, and the power of the Crespi brotherhood. I am most proud of the number of
students who have gone on to become quality young
men. I have been blessed to have had the opportunity
to coach so many great individual young men at Crespi Carmelite High School.”
Replacing Coach Kodama is Ryan Casey ’03. After
graduating from Crespi, Casey played soccer at Pasa-
dena Community College and then went on to play at
Long Beach State. He was the head coach at Polytech-
nic High School (Long Beach) from 2010-2013 and led the Jackrabbits to consecutive playoff appearances. .

Enhancing Communication X
NEW WEBSITE
Stay Connected
W
ith the establishment of the Technology & Resource Center and the plan to rollout out the 1:1 Laptop Initiative, it was apparent that communication
channels for parents, teachers and students needed
drastic improvement. The old system put in place for this interaction was cumbersome and lacked a user-friendly interface. Curious
visitors to the external school website shared a similar experience, with inefficient navigation and convoluted page layout.
Determined to stay at the forefront of education, Crespi began
to plan an overhaul of the current system in Fall of 2014. Through research and deliberation, it was decided that the best resource
option to move forward with the process was Blackbaud, the leading provider of nonprofit software and services. With the integration
of services with Blackbaud and WhippleHill’s cloud-based content
management, our Crespi Community is now able to stay connected
through our internal communication portal called “Crespi Connect.” Here are just some of the features that the new platform provides
for our current families and faculty:
• Bulletin boards for class communication • Learning resources by topic
• Athletic scores and highlights
• Online submissions with annotation and threaded discussion forums
• Personalized/relevant content from across campus life
• Internal messaging system for students, parents, faculty and alumni
• Ability to communicate with individuals, full rosters, or groups • User subscriptions to school-defined RSS and iCal feeds
• Ability to create online tests and quizzes with multiple styles and question types • iCal feeds display and update personal calendar
Alumni and friends of Crespi will be able to log into the new portal in the second phase of the website rollout. These constituents
can keep up with school and sporting events, subscribe to news feeds and activities, join community groups for instant communication, access an online store for merchandise, as well as many other features. Users can even set notification that push straight to emails and text messages if desired.
Look out for new developments in the system as more users tap into this amazing communication channel. .
