LETTER FROM THE PRESIDENT

Strength and Faith During Challenging Times To Our Crespi Family,

I

t is with immense gratitude that I present Crespi Carmelite High School’s Annual Report on Philanthropy for the

2019-2020 academic year.

In a year overshadowed by the COVID-19 pandemic, there

have been many wonderful moments at Crespi which deserve to be honored and celebrated. The true strength of our faith

community surfaced as our fellow Celts needed it most. A 28%

increase in funds raised, including a 10% increase in our annual fund (CMF), enabled over 50 students to continue their education at Crespi and fulfill their dreams of becoming Crespi Men. . During our 2019-2020 academic year, four of our scientific

Celts received recognition at the 2020 Los Angeles County Science & Engineering Fair (LACSEF):

Paris Pappas ’23 received recognition in the Biology and Molecular Biology Senior Division for his project titled:

Organic vs Inorganic, the effect of various catalases on the decomposition of the toxin hydrogen peroxide.

Jonathan Brahim ’20 and Vishal Ravi ’20 placed 3rd in the

Chemistry Senior Division for their project titled: Investigation

The title was the first for our water polo team since 1981. In true Celt fashion, members of the ’81 team were there

cheering our Celts to victory. Returning the favor, members

of the 2019 team helped induct the 1981 team into Crespi’s Athletic Hall of Fame.

. The football team won a share of the league title for the

first time since 2014, advancing to the CIF-SS Division 6 Semi-Finals.

. The first-ever “Virtual” CAPER, hosted by Super Celt Chris

“Geeter” McGee ’89 was a huge success, exceeding preCOVID revenue projections by more than $30,000.

. Construction of the Robinson Family Aquatics Center

continued during the pandemic. The main and warmup pools have been filled, and final inspection is under way.

. The annual Hall of Fame ceremony was held in February,

honoring Celt greats Peter Bomar ’03 and Sione Fua ’06, the 1981 water polo team, and the longest-tenured coach in school history, Mrs. Pat Baker.

LETTER FROM THE CHAIR

We are One Crespi Family To Our Crespi Family,

W

hat a year! On behalf of Crespi Carmelite High School’s Board of Directors, administration, faculty, staff and

students, I want to thank you for your commitment to us

during these challenging times. You continued to support

Crespi not only with faith, loyalty and love, but with your

financial gifts as well. We called upon you to graciously assist

our families that were financially impacted by COVID-19, and you heeded that call. This is further proof that we are one Crespi family, and always support our Crespi brethren.

The 2019-2020 academic year proved to be quite successful

and historic, but was unfortunately overshadowed by the onset of COVID-19 and its impact on our community. Due to state health and safety guidelines, our faculty and staff were

mandated to manage their respective duties virtually while trying to provide our students with the best education and

“community feel” as possible. This was no easy task to say the least, but our resilient Celt family managed superbly.

Athletics were also halted abruptly, preventing our athletes

from competing and excelling in their respective sports. In

tirelessly lead and guide Crespi with tremendous success.

CAPER was held virtually in April, which resulted in one of

the highest-grossing annual fundraisers in Crespi history. Funds raised from both CAPER and the Emergency Student Fund

appeal allowed students to remain at Crespi during these strain-

ing financial times. The Robinson Family Aquatics Center is now

completed and absolutely stunning! These uncertain times in our world may continue to challenge us; however, our community always joins together to overcome adversity, and prosper.

As noted in last year’s letter, my term as board chair was due

to end at the close of the 2018-2019 academic year. However,

as so many in the Crespi community have been called upon to make adjustments and manage the challenges of COVID-19,

I have agreed to continue as chair per request of the board. I completed my fourth year as chair in May, and am currently

in my fifth year. I am honored to continue serving Crespi, and thank all who believe and trust in me to be a part of the

greatest team of high school leaders, students, teachers and administrators in Southern California.

May Our Lady of Mount Carmel bless and protect you, and

ach year in Crespi’s modern history, seniors shared similar commencement rituals: Baccalaureate Mass at Our Lady of Grace Church, and a race for the shortest ceremony at the filled-to-capacity Alumni Memorial Gym. Faces of Crespi: Jess Garner

I

n a recent study published by The Lancet Child & Adolescent Health Journal, the World Health Organization warned that adolescents aren’t exercising enough, putting their current

and future health at risk. Since the beginning of the COVID-19

pandemic, screen time has drastically increased and replaced

physical activity, with students spending hours at their computers attending online classes.

“It is crucial for the mental, emotional and physical

well-being of boys that they keep physically active,” says neurobiology and brain research pioneer Dr.

Michael Gurian, author of The Minds of Boys and Saving

Our Sons. “This can mean getting up and moving around every twenty minutes or so during online schooling;

doing brain breaks at least every half hour; making sure

to exercise around two hours per day, and making sure to get outside for some time in nature daily (if weather and conditions allow).” Gurian warns that, “especially now

that boys are face-to-face with their computers so many

hours every day, they must self-motivate to keep moving, and their parents must help them to keep to a regime of physical exercise and activity. Their mental health and their social-emotional development depend on it!”

So how do you keep high school boys active and

modified and adapted, and recalls, “We came up with two

separate workouts. One workout was a traditional training for those who had the right equipment in their garage. For the majority of students who did not, I created a body-

weight program that was the primary go-to for our class.” Eventually, students got creative, using household items

such as paint cans, tires, filled buckets, and scaffolding in place of proper gym equipment.

The physical workout was not the only area of focus

for the physical education team. The concern was that

bonding that Celts experience in school. Each month, a

“Core Value of the Month” was presented and discussed, based on the Crespi Man Statement and Carmelite

in which one is teaching. Another unique aspect of the

R.O.S.E. award is that Crespi teachers vote to determine the recipient; the award truly symbolizes the impact a

teacher makes on the school community through their interactions with their peers.

Vice Principal Alan Swaney describes why Garner

was honored by his peers. “Jess has been a force of nature on campus; his booming voice can be heard throughout

from within the weight room under the bleachers, and

course has allowed us to expand and strengthen the very

popular curriculum.” Continues Swaney, “He hosts faculty workout sessions in the wee hours of the morning, and stays late to assist with team practices or offer student and parent information sessions about teen wellness.

In faculty meetings, he brings a natural curiosity and a

particular savvy about the culture at Crespi: his questions and comments always move the conversation forward.”

“Jess seems to be everywhere at once, and he is always

among the first to volunteer when others need help,” said Swaney. “We all see the Crespi Man embodied when we

work with Jess, and that makes him a fitting recipient of the R.O.S.E. Award.”

Now in his 21st year at Crespi, Garner explains his

longevity. “The bond amongst the students is what has

kept me here for 20 years. I see it daily, and I know how

important it is for young men in their formative years.” .

By Alan Swaney On March 19, 2020, Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti issued a “Safer at Home” order for all Angelenos in order to combat the spread of the COVID-19 virus. On March 20, Crespi shifted to an online learning protocol, in the hope that students would return by mid-April. When it became evident that classes would not resume for the remainder of the academic year, the priority of the school was two-fold: to maintain rigorous academic standards while balancing students’ well-being in mind, body, and soul; and to preserve those elements that make the Crespi experience unique: a one-on-one connection with students and faculty alike. Vice Principal of Academics Alan Swaney explains how Crespi adeptly pivoted to online learning while maintaining the one-on-one connection to keep students motivated and engaged. 14

Peter Bomar ’03 (Soccer), Sione Fua ’06 (Football & Wrestling), Pat Baker

(Crespi Head Cheerleading Coach), and the 1981 Water Polo Team. Peter

Bomar and Sione Fua were both inducted by their respective coaches, Rob

Therefore, it was only fitting that the ’81 team was inducted by the 2019

Planned Giving is a great way to leave your legacy within

the Crespi Community. Planned gifts are one of the major

pillars involved in building the Crespi Man Fund (CMF). The CMF supports all aspects of the student experience, provides tuition assistance to deserving Celts who would otherwise not be able to afford a Crespi education, allows for the

recruitment, retention, and development of first-class faculty
