Do they talk about it enthusiastically? Do they advocate for it? And maybe most importantly, do they “pay it forward” with the next generation by sharing the mission with them and acting as living examples of it?

In this issue of our magazine and the next one, we’re celebrating alumni who have paid it forward with their volunteer service to Prep. Their stories are extraordinary, and our students’ experience is richer by far for having these men participate in our mission here.

HON. DEREK VAUGHN ‘92 Deeply embedded in the Jesuit charism of the past 500 years and in the formative mission at Creighton Prep is the importance of service. That Men for Others are formed and go on to be thoughtful, active servant leaders who honor a lifelong responsibility to selflessness for God’s glory only.

Today, that responsibility is carried out by Prep graduates everywhere, including at 74th and Western Avenue. The following pages include brief snapshots of those who currently serve or have recently served as volunteers at the school.

We thank them for what they have done and continue to do to support our mission and to show the face of Christ to those around them. In their work at Prep, they become role models of generosity to young men at the beginning of a journey to that same place.

Jim Hughes '51 has had photography

as a hobby for over 50 years. He started taking photos at Prep events when he was invited by his friend Jim Madden ’50 to the 2012 Athletic Hall of Fame Dinner & Induction Ceremony, where he and his teammates on the 1947 football team were being inducted.

“I took a little camera with me just to take a picture of Jim,” he noted.

From there, Jim began taking photos at Prep football and basketball games and then moved on to photographing annual events such as the Loyola Dinner of Honor and Distinction.

After editing the photos, he would drop them off at the Alumni Office for use in Prep communications.

Though he's slowed down picturetaking for Prep, he has fond memories of the school and his contributions to it as a volunteer. "Once a Prepster, always a Prepster," he said.

“When I was a Prep student, I remember seeing so many alumni that would come back and volunteer,” said the Hon. Derek Vaughn ’92, Douglas County Court Judge for the 4th Judicial District. He was also encouraged by other Prep alumni to “get back involved with the school a few years ago.”

Since then, he has worked as a member of the Creighton Prep Board of Trustees and served as a guest speaker for a course on leadership, Career Day for Sophomores and an induction ceremony for new members of the Virgil J. Beckmann Chapter of the Rho Kappa National Social Studies Honor Society. Of his board service specifically, Judge Vaughn noted, “I am honored to be part of a wonderful group of people who want the absolute best for our students, teachers and staff.”

He would ask his peers in the alumni community to return to volunteer, too. “We all have a story about our experiences, our trials and triumphs.

It is our collective stories that can be a source of motivation for our next generation of leaders.”

JOHN NEBBIA ‘07 John Nebbia ‘07 is a firm believer

in the Prep experience. It was an important part of his life, and he still spends time with his high school friends to this day. It’s where he hopes to one day send his son.

EVEN BEFORE I CAME TO PREP, I LEARNED ABOUT BEING A MAN FOR OTHERS. MY PARENTS INSTILLED IN ALL OF THEIR CHILDREN TO HELP OUT WHERE AND WHEN THEY CAN.

“I had a spectacular experience at Prep, and I went into college with confidence in my career path,” said John. “I wanted to take the opportunity to try and instill that confidence into those considering engineering. As a student, Prep did as advertised — fully prepared me for college. It formed me into a better person. I continue to strive and work towards the Men for Others mantra.”

John has participated in Career Day a number of times, talking to sophomore students about pursuing a career in engineering and sharing the experiences of his career journey.

“My task was to speak to the students and answer questions pertaining to all fields of engineering,” added John. “I presented what my company specializes in and spoke in general about choosing a degree in engineering.”

John says alumni thinking about volunteering for Prep should “go for it.”

In addition to Operation Others, Troy recruits his sister Kathy Knust to work the Prep home football and basketball games. His brother, Tim Pfannenstiel, runs the audio and visuals for Prep’s BASH and Sports Night events.

TROY PFANNENSTIEL ’89 Whether it’s working the ticket booth at Creighton Prep’s football and basketball games, or serving as one of the many Operation Others volunteers who deliver meals to Omaha area families and residents in need during the holiday season, Troy Pfannenstiel ’89 is a true man for others, oftentimes making volunteering a family affair.

“My family and I have participated in Operation Others since my daughters were four or five years old,” said Troy. “They are now 21 and 23 years old. I wanted to teach them how fortunate they are and that there

“Volunteering goes back to how I was raised,” said Troy. “Even before I came to Prep, I learned about being a man for others. My parents instilled in all of their children to help out where and when they can.”

When Troy was a freshman, he remembers being told to get involved.

To join a club, go out for a sport, volunteer and be part of the Prep community. He says that Prep is more than classes and that hasn’t changed.

“Prep is about an education in life and being responsible members of the community and doing the right thing,” said Troy.

“I enjoy seeing the staff and catching up with those who influenced me in my time at Prep, and I enjoy speaking to the students as well.”

BRIAN PURCELL ‘05 AND KEVIN PURCELL ’73 For the Purcell family, the history of volunteering at Prep stretches back 50 years to Kevin '73's senior year.

“I helped with Operation Others leading a basketball marathon,” said Kevin.

Later on when he took his oldest son’s Cub Scout group to help deliver food during Operation Others, he asked

“Prep gave me the desire to be a man for others,” noted Mark Laughlin '84 when asked if his experience as a Prep student influenced his desire to volunteer as a co-coach of the mock trial team. “It’s trite, but you get more than you give when volunteering at Prep.”

In concert with a number of faculty moderators and current co-coaches Pat Cooper and Mark’s father, Gerry Laughlin ’59, he has helped guide the program to numerous state titles.

Having his son Ryan ’22 on the team has been a joy, too. “You get to see them work hard and, hopefully, have success. It’s very rewarding.”

Mark encourages other alumni to consider volunteering their time and talent at Prep, and he suggests that one way to get more alumni involved would be to promote single-day volunteer opportunities.

“I’m so glad I volunteered. It’s probably the best part of how I’ve spent my time over the past six years.”

Son Brian ’05 thinks his volunteering for Operation Others started at “about five years old” when he was introduced to it by his parents. He went on to be part of the Core Team as a student then returned after graduation to keep volunteering on the project.

Today, Brian still helps “organize, plan and execute the delivery plan” on Delivery Weekend. He also enjoys seeing other alumni return to help that weekend, “especially as their families grow and they are volunteering with their children.”

ANDY SCHMAD ‘03 Andy Schmad '03's interest in

volunteering at Prep was piqued from his work as a student manager for the varsity baseball team and his time as a player on the first varsity basketball team coached by Josh Luedtke ’90.

He was asked by the varsity baseball coaches to help the team after he had been cut during tryouts his junior year. “So that was my first stint doing any sort of coaching,” Andy remarked. “I was just helping

When asked what he liked best about volunteering at Prep, he was quick to answer. “I just really enjoy being involved with it. Just being in the know and feeling like I’m a part of it. I’m probably the biggest Prep fan there is of anyone who doesn't have their paycheck coming from Prep.”

Titus would tell other alumni who are thinking about volunteering at Prep to do it. “Whatever they have to offer is enough,” he said. “They’ll be surprised how much the kids will get from them and how much they’ll get from the kids.”

His example on that front was another Prep defensive line great and Athletic

volunteered for Career Day. Seeing how the institution changed, with an updated building structure and newer athletic facilities, was impressive. However, he felt right at home being around the students.

MATT SMITH ‘06 Stationed at Offutt Air Force Base as an Active Duty Officer, Matt Smith '06 feels fortunate to have the unique opportunity to be assigned to his home state. He reached out to Creighton Prep to learn about ways he could give back.

“I volunteered during Career Day and spoke to the sophomore class about why I am an Air Force Officer,” said Matt. “I’m an ROTC instructor, and you can get a college education and become an officer through that avenue.”

Matt hadn’t been back to Creighton Prep in almost 15 years before he

Matt says that Creighton Prep introduced foundational core values at a young age that helped prepare him for his current position. He also recommends that other alumni give back and volunteer.

“You have more knowledge and influence than perhaps you give yourself credit for,” added Matt. “That could be very beneficial to a young, impressionable mind. I would encourage them (alumni) to offset some of the wisdom and skills that they have acquired over the last 10, 15, 20 years and give back.”

Matt is heading to the University of Nebraska-Lincoln in July 2022 to become an instructor of aerospace studies.

With all that he learned as a Husker defensive tackle on one of the nation’s top defenses and in his four years in the National Football League, he has a lot of football wisdom to share. He also turned down the stipend that came with the opportunity at CP. “Coming back and doing as much as I can, I feel like that’s what I’m supposed to do.”

Hall of Fame member: Junior Bryant ’89, who played collegiately at Notre Dame, in the NFL for the San Francisco 49ers and who made time to teach players like Titus at a youth football camp years ago. “That was so big to me and I just appreciated it,” he noted.

MARK FOXALL ‘06 When Mark Foxall ‘06 learned that Creighton Prep was having a car show, he signed up his father (Mark Foxall ‘78) and his father’s 1978 Corvette to be part of it. Mark, his father and uncle are all proud alumni of Creighton Prep and have enjoyed events that have allowed them to reconnect with old friends and classmates.

“Before I left the classroom, I told the students that one of the greatest assets is the Prep alumni community,” Mark noted. “If you want to be a lawyer, if you want to be a doctor, no matter what you want to be, there is an alum that probably does it. There are a lot of opportunities for students to interact with alumni.”

Through those reconnections, Director of Alumni Relations Mike Beacom approached Mark (‘06) about coming back to talk with students at Career Day.

He recommends giving back time so that students can benefit from the wisdom and experience of others.

“Coming back and speaking to high school students and seeing their inquisitive faces reinvigorates you.

It’s inspiring," he said.

JIM FOGARTY ‘63, TOM CAVEL ‘63 AND MIKE SPINHARNEY ‘63 Jim Fogarty '63, Tom Cavel '63, and Mike Spinharney '63 provide invaluable

service to Prep as Class Ambassadors and have enjoyed their service to Prep in many other capacities, too.

With his experience in communications and publishing, Jim assisted in developing the Prep For The Future fundraising campaign in the late 90’s and, just recently, spoke to students on the topics of history writing and archiving, a subject he knows well as a founding member of Legacy Preservation.

Tom started volunteering on a BASH committee “years ago” and still helps organize class reunions. “We’ve got our 60th coming up, and we already have a date — October 7, 2023 — and secured the Omaha Country Club,” he remarked.

In addition to his Class Ambassador duties, Mike enjoys organizing the multiple yearly class gatherings that have become “a big success” and were referenced in the Winter 2021-2022 magazine. He also encourages Prep to reach out to alumni who are “subject matter experts” to share their thoughts in case their experiences could be helpful in meeting challenges faced by the school.

Mr. Jim Bopp Mr. Bopp begins his new role in July as the next principal at Brophy College Preparatory School in Phoenix, where he started his career as a Jesuit educator. During his six years at Prep, Mr. Bopp played crucial roles in the development of the ToMorrow Labs and the integration of the Loyola Scholars program. He also advocated for the expansion of student activities and advanced Student Support Services into a region-leading program.

Also in July, Creighton Prep Dean of Students Dr. Sterling Brown begins his work as the new Prefect of Studies (Principal) at Saint Ignatius College Prep in Chicago. Dr. Brown made a significant difference to Prep students over the course of his four-year career at Prep.

Filling his dean of students role at CP will be Mr. John Jenkins. He came to Prep from Loyola Blakefield, a Jesuit high school in Towson, Maryland, and has been teaching Spanish in the World Language Department since the beginning of the 2020-2021 school year.

Academic Principal Joe Ryberg ’84 , a 26-year veteran of Prep, will assume the role of interim principal for the 2022-2023 school year while a search is conducted for a new head of school.

“Jeremy allowed me to spend a lot of time painting, and I was in the art room as much as I could possibly be there,” said Nic. “I guess I became obsessed with it because I was used to competition and challenging myself, and I found painting to be a great challenge.”

Upon graduation, Jeremy helped Nic secure a residency with Odd Nerdrum, a Norwegian painter considered to be one of the greatest living classical painters of his time. Under Odd’s painting program, only a few students are selected to live on his property in Norway and learn philosophy and classical techniques under his direction.

When St. Ignatius shattered his leg during the Battle of Pamplona in 1521, he was changed forever. No longer a warrior, he didn’t succumb to the tragedy that resulted from such a devastating event. Instead, he started reading books about saints and went through a spiritual process of healing.

He embraced a new vision that led to a total transformation of his life. We call this a cannonball moment – when your life takes on a greater meaning and your purpose becomes clearer and more evident.

Jeremy Caniglia '88 Named Archdiocesan Secondary Educator of the Year

Nic recently moved back to Omaha, Nebraska and has teamed up with Jeremy and other area artists as part of a New Masters Exhibition at the PACE gallery in Council Bluffs, Iowa.

The exhibition runs from late May through September 30. He also has volunteered a number of times at Prep, leading painting demos for Jeremy’s fine arts classes.

“Jeremy did so much for me,” added Nic. “I can’t repay him the same way, but I can help these students. I like coming back to Prep to work with the students because I see myself in their shoes, and I know I would have appreciated having someone come back to do a painting demo when I was in school. My goal is to inspire them and make them believe a little bit more in their capabilities. I want to pass that inspiration down so that it lives on.”

In Creighton Prep’s Lloyd Skinner Chapel and throughout the school, visitors are oftentimes amazed by the large Baroque-style paintings of Jesuit saints that adorn the walls.

It typically takes a few seconds for them to notice the plaques near the paintings that identify the Creighton Prep students as the artists who created the works. These remarkable works would not be possible without Jeremy’s teaching.

“While the masterpieces we have in the chapel and throughout the school are the best testament to Jeremy’s work as an art teacher that most of us are familiar with, I can tell you that after reading the testimonials from his current and former students who

helped with the nomination process that those masterpieces only tell a small fraction of the story,” said Jim Bopp, principal of Creighton Prep.

“The cura personalis he exhibits for each of his students, and the resulting impact he has on their lives, is the foundational reason for his receiving this great honor.”

Jeremy is involved in the faith formation of the students through the way he teaches fine art through prayer. One part of this process is called composition of place. Someone who is praying imagines the scene in which a Gospel story takes place or the life of a saint unfolds. The person who is praying lets that scene come to life in their imagination and enters that scene. Jeremy uses this process to help students create artworks animated by their faith. To make religious art, students have to let their hearts, souls and imaginations come alive in the religious subject. They have to have a prayer encounter with the subject of their religious art.

“The outcome of Jeremy’s connection of prayer with artworks is that these paintings are much more than technically sound works of art. Rather, they are artifacts of our students’ profound, religious encounter with their subjects,” said Fr. Matt Spotts, SJ, president of Creighton Prep. “Put even more simply, Jeremy teaches our students to pray.”

Nine Named National Merit Semifinalists

Creighton Prep had yet another amazing year in the competition for Regional Scholastic Art & Writing Awards. A total of 54 students from Creighton Prep’s fine arts program won a combined 108 awards, which included 59 Honorable Mentions, 29 Silver Keys and 20 Gold Keys.

The 20 Gold Key winners also had their work in the national competition.

Creighton Prep seniors Grant Kearney and James (Mobai) Jiang won Gold Keys in the Portfolio category, which is the highest achievement for high school students.

Robotics Teams Win Super Regional, Perform Well at State Creighton Prep’s four robotics teams won the FIRST Tech Challenge super regional in Sioux Center, Iowa then moved on to state competition on February 18-19 in Coralville, Iowa.

At state, the robotics teams represented Prep very well. The freshman team was 7th in their division, the sophomore team 11th and the junior/senior team 20th. The juniors of Team 16010 also finished 11th at state.

Students Honored at Harvard Model Congress Sixteen Prep students participated in the Harvard Model Congress event in Boston in late February, and five earned recognition for their work.

Receiving Best Delegate honors (also known as “The Gavel”) were seniors Will Bolay on the Senate Intelligence Committee, Dongkyu Lee on the Senate Energy and Natural Resources Committee, and Jack McNally on the Senate Armed Services Committee.

Gavels are only awarded to 2-3 students per committee, and this is the second Gavel award for Dongkyu and Jack in as many years. Selected for Honorable Mention recognition were seniors Brendan Preisman as a member of the Media and Stephen Trainer on the Senate Finance Committee.

Other members of Prep’s delegation included seniors Tommy Blake, Patrick Kealey, Chandong Kim, Ryan Laughlin, and James Silva; juniors Ben Cooper, Quentin Jones, Yoa Peralta, and Wil Strehle; and sophomores Graham App and Colin Bolay.

Creighton Prep Launches Mobile App for Jr. Jays Fans

Creighton Prep introduced the Go Prep mobile app earlier this year, providing alumni, parents and students with the latest information on athletic and student events at Prep.

The app is a one-stop-shop location for fans to experience game day and student events, featuring apparel, live stats, multimedia

content, rewards, rosters, schedules, team information and more. Ticket sales for athletic events will be sold and redeemed through the app. In addition, mobile app users can sign up for notifications from the teams and events that matter most to them.

“We are working in conjunction with From Now On to make the Go Prep app the ultimate experience for all things Prep,” said Dr. Dan Schinzel, athletic director at Creighton Prep. “We’re excited to serve as the pilot high school for the app in the state of Nebraska.”

Athletic Trainer Bill Kleber ‘98 Honored Congratulations to Athletic Trainer Bill Kleber ‘98 on receiving the 2022 Dr. Denis "Izzy" Isrow Above and Beyond the Call of Duty Award from the Mid-America Athletic Trainers’ Association at their 43rd annual meeting in March. The award is in recognition of Bill’s outstanding efforts as an athletic trainer, his impact on those he cares for and his contributions to the athletic training profession.

“The biggest thanks needs to go out to my wife, Becky Mooney, ‘my associate co-head coach,’” Pat noted. “She has been my biggest supporter over the years. I have had many days and nights at the ball field, and she has been so understanding of the time I put into coaching.”

EXTENDING PREP’S REACH Creighton Prep Offers Morning Bus Transportation Accessibility is incredibly important when it comes to considering a high school. After running a successful bus transportation program last year with Chief School Bus, Creighton Prep will be offering the service again for the 2022-2023 school year.

“It’s a pretty simple concept, and it didn’t take us long to develop the (bus) program,” said Alex Zimmerman, chief financial officer at Creighton Prep.

“We know that public schools bus their students. Surely we can do the same.”

Bus transportation ensures that students get to Prep safely during the early morning commute. Buses typically arrive between 7:45 a.m. and 7:50 a.m. to give students 10 to 15 minutes to make it to class.

Parents can sign up their student to receive morning bus transportation for $250 per semester. That amount is discounted for families who receive income-based tuition adjustments.

Buses will pick up students at 12 designated locations throughout Omaha and surrounding areas.

Mr. Bopp then presented the annual Michael Hindelang, SJ Award for Teaching Excellence to math teacher Ms. Anne Hefflinger, noting her exceptional work as a teacher, including in the Loyola Scholars program, as a soccer coach, a community period moderator and a student activities leader.

Next, Fr. Spotts presented diplomas to each of the graduates and, afterward, led the audience in a prayer to close the ceremony.

CREIGHTON PREP EARNS HEART SAFE SCHOOL DESIGNATION Partners with Children's Hospital & Medical Center for Project ADAM Preparedness Creighton Preparatory School, in collaboration with Children’s Hospital & Medical Center, announced on April 25, 2022 that it has received a Heart Safe designation through Project ADAM. Prep is the first high school in Nebraska to receive the designation and go through the emergency preparedness process through the Project ADAM Heart Safe School program.

According to the American Heart Association, more than 350,000 out-of-hospital sudden cardiac arrests (SCA) occur in the United States each year and approximately 10 percent survive. Equipping the school with AEDs onsite, and having an emergency response plan in place, is critical in maintaining a safe environment at Prep.

“We are so proud of Creighton Prep and of our Nebraska schools who take the steps to create the next generation of heart savers by giving students and educators the opportunity to learn CPR and creating more qualified lifesavers in our community,” said Jenny Nixon, regional vice president of the American Heart Association.

Since 1999, more than 4,000 schools across the country have achieved a Heart Safe designation. Creighton Prep is the first school in Nebraska to achieve it.

The 2nd Annual Creighton Prep Car Show

The entries spanned nearly 70 years of vehicular excellence and a wide range of makes and models. From a 1950’s Willys Jeepster to a 2022 Audi RS e-tron GT, it was a truly impressive display.

It would have been easy to mistake the west parking lot on Saturday morning, June 18 for the staging area of a premier auto auction. That’s how amazing the lineup was for the 2nd Annual Creighton Prep Car Show sponsored by the Student Car Club.

To top it off, The Pancake Man, courtesy of Baxter Auto, served delicious breakfast cakes to car owners and others who were there just to take in the show. The $25 car entry fee supported Prep through the AMDG Fund.

Mark and Pat have had the privilege of coaching their children throughout their involvement in mock trials. Both coached at Duchesne eight years ago, when Mark’s youngest daughter was going to school there. They soon came over to Prep, where Mark’s oldest son was a junior at the time. This past year, sons Ryan Laughlin ‘22 and Ben Cooper ‘23 were on the team.

Ryan says that Mock Trial provided him with an amazing experience and that he formed close bonds with all of his teammates. “I would have to say my all-time favorite thing is cross examinations,” said Ryan.

“Cross examinations are just one lawyer and one witness on opposite teams, and it is a battle to see who comes out on top.”

In the fall of 2016, Mark Laughlin '84 and Pat Cooper, attorneys with Nebraska-based law firm Fraser Stryker, teamed up to coach the Prep Blue mock trial team. Beginning that year, Prep Blue won the Nebraska State Mock Trial Championship three years straight. In 2018-2019 they also finished second in the country at the National High School Mock Trial Competition. Their success continued with another state championship title this year, their fifth title in the past six years.

PROFILES IN EXCELLENCE The Creighton Prep community gathered on March 7 to honor those who achieved greatness in their athletic endeavors at the school, including the members of a state championship team, three former student-athletes and three coaches.

Travis Justice served as master of ceremonies. His welcome and introductory remarks were followed by an opening prayer from Creighton Prep President Fr. Matt Spotts, SJ and a sumptuous dinner. Director of Athletics Dr. Dan Schinzel began the awards program by presenting the Tom Dineen Coaching Award to golf coach Matt Rasgorshek whose teams have won two Metro Conference crowns, three district championships and two state titles.

Regional gatherings held in Palm Springs, Washington D.C., New York City and Kansas City provided an opportunity for members of the Prep community to meet Fr. Spotts and engage in friendship and camaraderie. At the Washington D.C. event, brothers Bob Goodnow ’81 and Michael Goodnow ’82 enjoyed catching up on Prep and family news!

Fr. Spotts addressed each gathering with an update on the school and answered questions regarding the pandemic response, academics, sports. and clubs and activities. Being his first group of regional gatherings, it was a special experience for Father.

“Prep is truly blessed to have such dedicated and loyal alumni,” he noted. “The bond among Prep graduates is the foundation of our institution, and it’s a beautiful thing.”

1950's Bill Carlisle ‘51 was honored recently with a retirement party at Creighton University, where he taught in the dental school for more than 60 years. He is pictured here with his wife of 65 years, Dolores.

1970's Patrick Coyle ‘76 wrote and directed "The Big Blue River," a play that ran throughout March at the North Garden Theater in Saint Paul, Minnesota.

Richard Barry ‘55 graduated from the United States Military Academy at West Point, had a distinguished career in the military, received the Bronze Star for Valor and worked in classified communications. He is retired in Ponte Vedra, Florida with his wife of 59 years, Barbara.

Tom Sutko ‘76 sold his Omahabased SRE Home Inspections, SRE Home Services and Leapin Lizard Locksmiths businesses to his son John Sutko ‘04 and his TNT Termite Services and Pest Solutions 365 businesses to his son Paul Sutko ‘06. He and his wife Melanie “look forward to doing more traveling” as time allows.

Margaret and Tom Hoarty ‘66 were named Volunteers of the Year by the Children’s Scholarship Fund of Omaha.

The organization provides scholarships for private education to K-8 students from lower-income families. The Hoartys were honored in May at the annual CHANCE Luncheon, where the honorary chairs were Melissa and Patrick Duffy ‘90.

1990's Tariq Khan ‘91 is currently a senior voice engineering manager for TTEC Corporation, a firm offering a range of solutions that can improve the customer experience for an organization. He’s also the author of the book “Serotonin's Significance: Speculative essays on the neurotransmitter’s societal, psychological, and historical impact.”

Ryan Zabrowski ‘96 works in commercial real estate at Investors Realty, Inc. in Omaha. He was appointed last fall to the post of Regional Director for the Central Region of the Society for Industrial and Office Realtors.

Tad Dickel ‘98 is a consultant based in Evansville, Indiana and the author of “Strategic Planning for Catholic Parishes: Listening, learning and responding through the lens of Pope Francis’s teaching on synodality.”

1960's Frank Chapuran '63 and his wife Carol helped found St. John Paul II Catholic High School in Huntsville, Alabama in 1996, and they still volunteer there. Most recently, they served as honorary co-chairs for the school’s 25th anniversary celebration.

Rev. Joseph Taphorn ‘89 is a rector and vice president at Saint Paul Seminary School of Divinity in Saint Paul, Minnesota. On June 7, he celebrated his 25th anniversary as a priest.

1980's Tate Fitzgerald ‘89 was promoted to executive vice president, chief information officer and chief operations officer at Centris Federal Credit Union.

Dominic Romeo '98 has been appointed vice president of technical services at Scott Data Center, which provides highly secure data storage and cloud computing services from its location near the Scott Technology Center in Omaha.

Timothy Christian ‘99 is the chief executive officer of Night Fox Entertainment and is one of the developers of a new television series about a Nebraska woman who was infamous as a bootlegger of alcohol during the early 20th century.

Corey Ragole ‘99 is vice president of project management in the Omaha office of Cresa, a commercial real estate company that offers a variety of services to occupiers of spaces in markets around the world.

Tommy Fry ‘06 was promoted in January to the rank of captain at SkyWest Airlines, and he commutes to Chicago for work.

Colin LaFave ‘18 was part of a school-record 400 yard freestyle relay team and a 200 yard freestyle relay team that helped Emory University win the NCAA Division III swimming and diving title this year.

Shikhar Saxena ’99 was named to the Midlands Business Journal’s 2021 40 Under 40 List. He co-founded Milan Laser Hair Removal in 2012, and locations are now open in more than 20 states across the country.

2000's Nick Wilwerding '01 is president and chief operating officer of Bridges Trust and the current chair of the Jesuit Partnership Council of Omaha.

He also spoke at Prep during Career Day for Sophomores in April.

Peter Bailis ‘07 is the founder and chief executive officer of Sisu, Inc., a company at the forefront of using machine learning for analytics that can contribute to better decisionmaking by businesses.

2010's Steve Townsend ‘11 graduated from the Heider College of Business at Creighton University in 2015 and is an associate at Bridgepoint Investment Banking.

Kevin Van Winkle ‘02 recently began a new position at Creighton Prep as a Gift Officer in the Advancement department. He was previously a math teacher at Prep and the athletic & activities director at Duchesne Academy.

2020's Keegan Holmstrom ‘22 was featured in a June 9 Omaha WorldHerald article after scoring an unassisted triple play for the Five Points Bank American Legion baseball team during their run to the championship of the 2022 Perfect Game Kansas City Invitational.

Thomas Corpuz ‘19 is a cadet at the United States Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs, Colorado and recently played the lead character in a campus production of the Broadway musical “All Shook Up.” Drew Dunham ‘18 graduated from the United States Military Academy at West Point and was a member of the Army West Point rugby team that won the Men’s D1A College Rugby Association of America national championship in April.

BASH RECAP

A Record-Setter to Benefit Prep Students Thank you to everyone who made BASH 2022 “Fight On For the White & Blue: Excellence Tried and True” an outstanding success. Director of Events Amy Knight said gross revenues for the vintage sports-themed fundraiser passed the $1 million mark for the first time in the event’s 52-year history.

Also for the first time ever, BASH 2022 combined a nearly weeklong silent auction online with a live auction event at Prep on Saturday, April 23 with over 600 people in attendance.

As always, the success of BASH depended on great generosity from the Prep community and hundreds of volunteers. Over 330 volunteers assisted in the months leading up to BASH, over 120 student volunteers helped with setup in the Heider Center, and more than 50 adult volunteers worked at the in-person event.

“We are so grateful for all the support provided to Prep through BASH 2022,” said Amy. “It was everything we could have hoped for and more!”

THE ARCHIVES PROJECT

Digitizing Creighton Prep’s History

Preserving Creighton Prep's history is a high priority and a major undertaking.

Thanks to the efforts of Social Studies Chair and teacher Tom Haindfeld and a group of dedicated students, the ongoing archives project has moved to its next phase — digitization.

The archives project relied on a workforce of 18 seniors — all members of the Rho Kappa National Social Studies Honor Society — and Roger Cimino '17.

By the end of this year, these students will have served 180 hours in the archives.

In the fall semester, the archives project team continued to organize and process the numerous artifacts — photographs, student publications, scrapbooks, graduation programs, school records, et al. “Processing” means sorting artifacts by subject, year or decade, removing staples and paper clips that can either tear documents or oxidize and damage them, and protecting certain artifacts from light and/or air.

Once the archives appeared to be suitably organized, the team began digitizing photographs in January. The oldest scanned photographs date to the 1920's, and even though some photos are older than that, their fragile quality prevents scanning without technical assistance.

To date, over 2,300 photographs have been scanned. Some of these photographs contain metadata — names, dates and events written on the back of the photographs — but most do not.

Just a few of the many years of Jay Junior yearbooks in the archives. The collection goes all the way back to the 1920's.

After an archival database is selected, the metadata will be entered into searchable fields so as to quickly locate artifacts relevant to a user search. Within the next year, the Prep Advancement team will be reaching out to alumni for help in identifying names, dates and events depicted in the other photographs.

“This is truly a strategic project,” said Director of Alumni Relations Mike Beacom ’85. “The efforts by Tom and the students will benefit Prep for many years to come.”

December 30, 1953 – February 21, 2022 Joe Dervin '72 was one of the most exceptional

student-athletes ever to don the blue and white for Creighton Prep. He was a standout in the sports of football, basketball and baseball, and became an eighttime letterman during a storied high school career.

On the football field, Joe played fullback and linebacker for fellow Athletic Hall of Fame member Don Leahy ’47, and his impressive play on both sides of the ball helped Prep to state titles in 1969 and 1970 plus a fourth-place finish in 1971. He also won three letters in basketball and was known as a great-hitting first baseman on the 1971 and 1972 baseball teams.

After high school, Joe attended and played football at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln before returning to Prep as a Jesuit donné then as a teacher and coach from 1979 to 1992. He went on to own the Hollywood Auto car dealership in Omaha and serve on the chain crew at Prep football games for a number of years.

Br. Michael R. Wilmot, SJ October 5, 1940 – February 24, 2022

Br. Wilmot served Creighton Prep as a dean of students, athletic coach and teacher from 1964-1993.

He also held a remarkable winning record as Prep’s varsity basketball coach and was influential on the field as a football defensive coordinator and as a varsity track coach. He was inducted into Creighton Prep’s Athletic Hall of Fame in 2009.

After his time at Creighton Prep, Br. Wilmot continued to serve the Omaha community, particularly North Omaha, where he helped build Jesuit Academy physically and in other ways.

He also founded Gesu Housing, an organization that “provides hard-working, lower-income families the opportunity to purchase their own home.”

STUDENT ACTIVITIES

During the 2021-2022 school year when most schools were starting from scratch again, trying to get clubs going, Prep didn’t miss a beat since the clubs hadn’t shut down; they just changed their strategy.

Established clubs made important strides. The Sustainability Club spearheaded a solar panel project that will soon power Carmen & Don Leahy Stadium and two electric cars at a time, and the Ping-Pong Club added

a competition table tennis team that will compete against other schools.

New clubs also emerged like the Aerospace Club that hopes to be part of the American Rocketry Challenge next year. Prep students also participated for the first time in the National Ethics Bowl, and the Bags Club dominated during community period.

In addition, the intramural program expanded and will allow for more student

Creighton Prep’s clubs and activities have not just survived but flourished during the pandemic. Great credit goes to the financial and logistical commitment of Prep’s administration, the Herculean efforts of the club moderators and coaches, and the willingness and spirit of magis in our students to engage in the face of challenge.
