Imagine me on the floor with both of my arms and feet open. Yes that’s the relief I get from surviving another year! The next couple of weeks will be all about the arts. That’s right ART BASEL is back in full effect so look out for our highlights in our next issue. In the mean time we’ve put the focus on some of the art witnessed in last year’s presentation.

Moreover we have the privilege of featuring Celebrity Photographer Markus Klinko whose work defies the hands of time.

Thought October was also Domestic Violence awareness month, this disease doesn’t take a break we feature 2 women from New York who survived and overcame Domestic abuse all the whole shining their positive light through a photoshoot orchestrated by Mike Walker, Chris Jones, Keith McCutheon, directed by Richard Petit and written by Giselle Rodriguez. A well rounded team that take pride in uplifting those who deserve it the most.

We are definitely closing the year with empowerment and positivity and it is always the heart and efforts of our writers and our contributors that make our issues what they are. We will never stop thanking them for their hard work. With this said Happy Holidays to all and Enjoy our 35th issue!

ABOUT SOPHIA LEVASSEUR Born and raised in Port-au-Prince,Haïti, Sophia migrated to the US in 2003. She is a nurse by vocation and has spent over the last decade in compassionately helping others. “When photographing a model, an actor or a musician, I set out to capture a defining moment of my subject’s true essence, rather than being preoccupied with whatever short lived visual trends may be in fashion at that time,” he says.

When creating the concept, the artist follows his intuition and lacks a methodical approach.

Revealing there is no recipe for a successful photo shoot; it’s fueled by the ability to “just go with it” and bring to life the present energy.

Before the Beyhive With a long list of famous faces in front of his lens, Klinko is well known for snapping mega album covers including Beyoncé’s Dangerously in Love, David Bowie’s Heathen & Mariah Carey’s The Emancipation of Mimi.

Going solo, check. Staging a comeback, check.

Whatever the career highlight, both emerging and established artists within the industry trust him to navigate the creative process and accept responsibility of their image. Describing the album covers as multi-sensory, the photos possess the power of scent in regards to triggering a special memory.

When asked about the iconic status of Bey’s first solo album cover, Klinko notes the image works because it provides context for the viewer. With one crazy in love look, they are transported back in time to 2003 (shout out to Glen Coco) and reminded of their personal throwback. Moving the viewer with an attraction that will last

forever, the cover was inspired by an ad campaign that Klinko completed for an online diamond company leading up to the photo shoot. Fun fact of the day (to slay): with absolutely zip denim on set, the future Queen of Coachella had to borrow Klinko’s pair of jeans last minute. The all-bling, no cover top and hip-hugging bottom look is still on point. An example of the female body as a central focus of his work, Klinko defines beauty as empowerment – the choice to wear all or bare all is always on her terms.

Cut It & Keep It Fast forward a decade and a half from Bey to today and Klinko is experimenting with the acceleration of the creative process and partnering with Koala, a young ChineseAmerican artist, with a modern female perspective, to explore youth grunge culture and street fashion. Shortening the time it takes to transition from shooting a photo to showing a photo, the team of two is having fun pushing the boundaries of a new idea within the world of photography. It’s this type of immediacy that Klinko points to as a pro of social media platforms. Strengthening Klinko’s ‘80s-inspired signature style and offering a complementary juxtaposition, the “yin” to his "yang" allows the photographer to stay relevant, find a balance and gain a fresh perspective.

Last year, in partnership with FUJIFILM North America Corporation, Klinko presented “2000s: The Exhibition” at Mouche Gallery in Beverly Hills, CA. Featuring a collection of his most celebrated works from the early aughts, the photographer freely shared his interest in experiencing fashion and celebrity images speedily move from album covers and magazine pages onto the walls of art galleries and museums around the world. To bring momentum to the retrospective, he welcomed Becky G to host the opening event. Leading up to the exhibition, the singer-songwriter was featured in Vogue sporting current gear that reflected 2000s style. Bridging past and present, Klinko convinced viewers (and the artistic community) that pairing generational differences and works is doable.

Having never snapped a photo or owned a camera until adulthood, speaking with the photographer over the phone, he offered an unconventional story. Following a hand injury as a classical harp soloist, Klinko traded his instrument for equipment.

Describing the decision to become a photographer as an epiphany, he effectively: purchased books, read about the topic, acquired a store mannequin, changed the lighting, practiced the skills and took notes – in that order. Familiar with the scene and the industry as the subject of many photo shoots

from his musical days, Klinko simply reapplied his rigorous music practice schedule to this new discipline. While he says that strong parallels don’t necessarily lead to a successful crossover, Klinko relates the subject, background and bright & dark shades of a photo to the melody, harmony and high & low notes of a piece of music, respectively.

The Revive is Alive

From mod patterns to metallic fabrics, '80s, '90s and noughties fashion is having a moment – the revival is oh so on. The culture rise of retro continues to turn these trends into fashion favorites.

However, the artist is quick to add that the industry in general has always drawn inspiration from wayback playback generations – and it’s not only about the fashion elements, but also the reviving of cultural moments and photographic techniques. “Artists have forever been inspired by works from eras past and the world of fashion is particularly fond of recycling itself endlessly,” he comments.

This fall marks the artist’s 25th anniversary as a professional photographer. Reflecting on his career, Klinko feels privileged to be able to continue honing his craft, widening his range of subjects, pursuing the longevity of the gallery aspect – and clicking again in a different way, while maintaining a smile.

A Quick Q&A Sesh!: Q: What’s your inspiration as an artist?

A: I’ve always loved re-visiting old photos, films, music videos and fashion mags.

Q: What’s in your closet from the '80s, '90s and noughties that you still like to rock?

A: Most of the pieces that I wear day-in and day-out are vintage. Rather than buying a lot of clothes, I rotate a handful of quality designer pieces that have a long shelf life and showcase a timeless style. My leather jacket is a go-to.

Q: If you could photograph anyone – living or dead – that you haven’t yet had the pleasure of working with who would it be? And why?

A: Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez or Greta Thunberg.

I’m interested in expanding outside the music, film and fashion culture into the political realm. With the emergence of social media, the definition of who can be a pop culture star has significantly broadened and the heroes of our day have evolved into political figures – the people who matter now, more so than ever.

From his first exhibit at Markowicz Gallery in Miami, FL, to his upcoming exhibition: “Bowie Unseen” at FUJIFILM House of Photography in London, England, winter 2019, Klinko continues to expand his international presence.

Scheduled to open in the next several weeks, Klinko’s connection to the unveiling of the new experience center is a testament to his 20(+)-year partnership with FUJIFILM. Between creating new work and collaborating with a string of galleries across the globe, the photographer is exhibiting in both temporary and permanent collections from continent to continent.

And what would a “MadHatter” Photoshoot be without a sparkly red, steam punk top-hat? House of GoGé puts all other top hat designs on notice with a mammoth rendition of this classic time piece, with the final look inspired in part by Johhny Depp’s “Mad Hatter” character in the 2010 adaption of “Alice in Wonderland”.

NJ phenom and classically trained MUA, Nina Ahjahnia does it again! Her creative eye crafts a string of peculiar and spot-on expressions, perfectly paired to the multi-dimensional apparel and natural cityscape setting of the shoot. Quirky, imaginative and capricious, Ahjahnia’s unconventional face-beats are a delight to behold for the engaged city goer or spectating tourist.

Equivocal to that of silken hand-coated chocolates, the imagery for “MadHatter” is like that of liquid velvet on the fashionistas tongue. With camera in hand veteran fashion photographer Karl M. Lee, artfully realizes his subject - then shoots her in splendid abstract! Even if by doing so, he has to lie in the middle of a busy intersection, while stopping ongoing traffic to do so!

"WHY DID YOU STAY?" This is the question that is all too common when facing a person who is going through a domestically abusive situation. As easy as it is to ask, its not as easy to answer. Domestic Violence is real and the ones that you least expect are going through it now, or have gone through it before, but the scariest part is that not many leave alive.

October is a month of many things but one with not much awareness...Domestic Violence. It's a gateway that leads to mental, emotional and physical abuse, yet it's an awareness that isn't being pushed like all others.

Whenever a mass shooting occurs or when we see murders happening with young men and women, everyone always asks about the parents or their upbringing, both of which raises the question of their HOME. It all starts there, which is where the word DOMESTIC arises. I was able to interview 2 individuals, Twila Hawkins and Giovanni Hawkins, who in fact SURVIVED domestic violence and are thriving. It took a long time and it surely wasn't easy for them, but they are fighters and they want to help others to do the same. Help me help them in the fight for Domestic Violence Awareness.

On average, nearly 20 people per minute are physically abused by an intimate partner in the United States.

During one year, this equates to more than 10 million women and men.

What is domestic violence and are there stages to it?

Domestic violence is the harming of anyone's physical, psychological, financial or spiritual well being via stalking, assault/ battery , sexual force, intimidation, manipulation, control or force. It is perpetrated upon a victim or victims that may cohabitate or are tied biologically within a family unit. It can include punching, hitting, biting, kicking, strangling, threats, weapon use and cyber bulling. There are at least 4 stages that are known and used to identify abuse. These stages are tension building, incident, reconcilation, and calm. During tension building a few things occur. This is where there's a breakdown in communication and the victim starts to typically feel like they need to exit the relationship. Incident is where we see what kind of abuser you're dealing with. Your physical abuse happens here. Financial control, emotional put downs, and Psychological manipulation or gaslighting happens . To offer understanding gas lighting is where the abuser almost invalidates your feelings or observations and makes you feel ridiculous for approaching them. Reconciliation (honeymoon stage) is the stage where gifts occur, sexual manipulation and or grand public praise gestures in exchange for a 'clean start'. Abusers use this to make their victim feel 'loved' this is also the construct of trauma bonding. Trauma bonding is the process of an abuser using the event as a catalyst to be a hero and make 'everything okay' . Victims in turn feel comforted and abuser's regain control. Calm is the final stage. This can last a few hours , days, weeks or months. This is the stage where victims and abusers go without incident. You, once again, will be the apple of his or her eye and lavished with love‌and so it begins, the cycle of abuse.

Do you feel that domestic violence is somewhat Taboo? (Most people see violence as physical, not emotional or mental) Giovanni-In some cultures it is.

For instance , most people in my community, the African American one, they view domestic violence as black eyes, busted lips, and bloody noses. So when you say you've been involved in this kind of a relationship people want to see things of that nature not realizing it comes in different forms. So people are looking for the Ike Turner's of the world not realizing they could be psychologically toxic , sexually manipulative, financially controlling etc.

Is this type of violence common in both men and women? Does it happen in one more than the other?

Twila- Abuse occurs in relationships of all walks of life, including men abusing women, women abusing men and same sex partner abuse.

However, women remain at the top of the list for the most abused in a relationship.

Giovanni -According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention 2015 NISVS (National Intimate Partner and Sexual Violence Survey ) females are at a whopping 26% over their male counterparts who report 15%

encountering IPV (Intimate Partner Violence) before age 18. The percentages listed are from a total of 30 million participants.

Can it occur at anytime? at any age?

Twila -Signs of abuse can happen at any time, and at any age.

Domestic violence is not only intimate or partner related. A toxic relationship can occur between parents and children, siblings and family members alike. The average age of a domestic abusive relationship begins at the age of 13.

Giovanni -Yes according to this very survey , 66% of children surveyed encountered psychological abuse between ages 12 - 18 years old. I've even encountered a child confiding in me her situation while mentoring in Baltimore City Public Schools.

She was a 7th grade alternative school student who was kicked out of her zone school dating a boy who was also attending this alternative school. He liked flirting with other girls she hated it - you know how that goes. They argue he gets physical and slams her against a locker. Staff intervenes but no one in her age group steps in because they are conditioned to think it's normal. It's nobody's business.

These kids were 12 and 13 years old.

72% of all murder-suicides involve an intimate partner; 94% of the victims of these murder suicides are female

Can it only happen in a relationship or does it also occur in families?

Giovanni-This is certainly not reserved for relationships. In the culture of social media it has been coined 'toxic relationships'. These sometimes result in physical altercations but for the most part happens as mental and emotional abuse.

Twila-Abuse can happen in relationships as well as in families more often than we may expect. Family violence such as molestation, assault and battery, abandonment and neglect are the least reported incidence of abuse.

In your experience, what can you say is a reason people still stick around an abusive family/ relationship? could it be fear or stability?

Twila- Women and men alike, are so co-dependent and groomed through trauma bonding and the cycle of abuse that it becomes hard to leave. An abused person is almost always striped of their independence, self-esteem, inability to make a sound decision, and financial independence.

Giovanni-For most brave survivors I have encountered , it's usually fear. Fear of their abuser's reaction; fear of the lack financial stability; the fear of being a statistic or not having the family unit they never had.

Giovanni, I read your book From Chrysalis to Butterfly, and I went through so many different emotions! In many moments you wanted to take your life. Did you do it because you thought it was a better way out for you or those around you?

Unfortunately no we don't communicate. It's a mess right now. I have attempted to coparent after the split. That went on for 2 years until an incident occurred causing my daughter to refuse visiting with him. I recently reached out to attempt coparenting again to no avail. He's not there yet in his heart although he's since moved on with a woman, who he lives with and shares a child. He hasn't submitted his answer. I am divorced in my heart and wish so much to have my divorce finalized that is 6 years later in progess. It's stressful but I pray daily for him and wish his new partner well.

Wow! First let me start by thanking you for reading my memoir. It is still surreal to me typing it. I'm still awe struck that I typed and self published a book!!

But to answer your question, I attempted suicide because I just wanted a do over. I am a believer that energy is neither lost nor destroyed and souls are energy. So I wanted to start on a clean slate. I felt like my life was in shambles and couldn't be fixed so out How/what did you do to get away from the violence made sense to me at that time. Physical, mental, and sexual and reproductive health effects have been linked with intimate partner violence including adolescent pregnancy, unintended pregnancy in general, miscarriage, stillbirth, intrauterine hemorrhage, nutritional deficiency, abdominal pain and other gastrointestinal problems, neurological disorders, chronic pain, disability, anxiety and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), as well as noncommunicable diseases such as hypertension, cancer and cardiovascular diseases. Victims of domestic violence are also at higher risk for developing addictions to alcohol, tobacco, or drugs

Did you enter a new relationship with the same type of violence? Do you believe you avoided the signs, or did you know what you were getting yourself into and committed anyway?

Even though I eventually escaped my abuser, I subjected myself to another abusive relationship, 11 years. Because I did not seek therapy/psychiatrist or allowed myself to heal, I was not aware of the signs of an unhealthy relationship. I tried to commit suicide, twice, due to the shame, guilt and devastation of what I felt was my fault.

I had the honor of reading your journal about Narcissism (thank you for giving me access to it!!) In your theory, do you believe that Narcissism is the common problem or trigger in domestic violence?

After years of research and education into the world of perpetrators, toxic and narcissistic personality disorder, the common denominator is always narcissism.

When can we expect your journal to be published? What platforms will it be available?

My journal will be published for the New Year, 2020!

Have you gotten any backlash because you call yourself a Survivor and not a victim?

Twila-I don’t see myself as a victim anymore. I used to, until I realized that I have the power to make a choice in who I allow in my life. I pride myself on sharing with others how I overcame victim mentality and helplessness. I’m no longer a victim but a Survivor!

Giovanni-It's actually been opposite. I received thanks from other survivors who needed inspiration. They credit with changing their perspective.

What's one message that you would want to put out there to anyone who is going through it now?

Twila-My message to all that have been suffering or have suffered the trauma of an abusive relationship, I encourage you to know that you are worthy, you are not what you are going through in this moment. Please understand that you can turn your Pain into your Purpose.

Giovanni-I want you to be encouraged. Please

pack a bag and tuck it away in the back of the closet.

Find two people you trust to confide in. They will serve as character witnesses later. Start making an exit strategy. Tomorrow isn't promised. My biological mother thought she had tomorrow. She was killed at the hands of her abuser at 19. It's a blessing I made it out... I want you to make it out too!

Where can they go for help?

Twila-Tell someone. Tell a trusted friend, relative, or your call your local Domestic Violence Hotline.

Allow someone to help you. You have nothing to be ashamed of. The shame is in not saving your own life, and possibly the life of your children.

G-Call the National Domestic Violence Hotline 1-800-799-7233 they can point you in the right direction to help find shelter in your state. You can also call your local police department and health and human services.

What actions are you currently taking in the fight for Domestic Violence Awareness?

Twila -I currently use social media as my platform to bring awareness to all. After of healing, some therapy, and relentless studies of Narcissistic Abuse and Disorder, I decided to do something with all of this knowledge in my head and heart. I started A Single Step. This is a coaching service for women, (for now), who are suffering through the trauma or have left their abuser still suffering with trauma as I did. A Single Step’s program educates you about domestic/intimate partner abuse, why did this happen to me, and how to overcome trauma a single step at a time.

There are modules, homework and live online interact with my clients to help overcome what they have endured. Needless to say, these are very intense sessions. Every client is different. You can choose, 4, 6 or 8 weeks of coaching or whatever it takes for your journey to be completed.

In conjunction, after coaching I have developed a Pain into Purpose plan to help you step into the next level of your life. This is called Successful Survivors.

This is a 12-week course teaching you how to elevate your purpose, no matter what that may be. This program also build self-esteem and self- love, absolutely necessary for growth and success.

Giovanni-Right now I make it a point to highlight this as a topic when I mentor young girls. I speak out by using my platforms to raise awareness and I share my story whenever God allows. I never know who I am ministering to.

What is your life now as a survivor?

Twila -After my healing, I decided to go back to school for my master’s degree in behavioral science/Health. I graduate this summer! Without my unwillingness to win this battle, I would never be where I ‘am today.

Giovanni -My life now is happy. I know me so much more now and I love on me so much more now after all the bs. Im not all the way free legally but I am free in my decision making , I go home to a nontoxic environment and I have the most valuable thing ever - my piece of mind. I have since went on to living a few of my dreams.

When you were contacted by Richard Petit to be the models for his project, how did you feel? what made you say yes? What was the experience like for you?

Twila- When Richard approached me, I was overjoyed. I also felt afraid to expose myself even further, but this is my purpose and my mission. I want to show women that you can take back your life, your power and your purpose! To be part of a magazine, to show this type of courage is needed to motivate women to leave… and I thank him deeply.

G -I was honored; elated! I said yes for all the survivors without the platform and I said yes for my mother Shirley A. Hawkins and me at the time of the abuse. She had no idea she'd be here now. She kept giving up.

Every year Angels for Humanity a non-profit organization who helps provide access to quality education and medical needs for impoverished children in Haiti, spearheads the most anticipated Fashion Event of the year, Catwalk for Charity. A star studded event where celebrities such as Garcelle Beauvais, Tatyana Ali and Vivica Fox have supported the event by being present and vocal about the work Angels for Humanity has been doing for the children they serve in Haiti. This year once again Brian White served as a host along side miami’s very own channel 10 news anchor Calvin Hughes. One of the best highlights of the night was when Yves-Danie Guerrier A young cancer patient from Haiti who’s being treated at Nos Petits Freres et Soeurs Hospital in partnership with FHACI an organization dedicated to help children battling cancer came on stage and shared with us that now she is cancer free. With online dating sites, dating apps and easy meet-ups in social media inboxes, single people have access to date many people. The access seems great because they're able to meet a plethora of people and decide who's right to date. But does that easy access come with a dating consequence? And are all of these people quality, upstanding individuals? The answer is, who cares!

The Facts Behind Single People Settling for Mediocrity, Just to Be in a Relationship So, why is this? Why aren't single daters patient enough to wait for the right partner with awesome qualities? Why are they settling for potential partners that aren't equipped for long-time commitments? The answer is, a lot of single people just want to be with someone, anyone, at whatever cost. This could be to fulfill the needs of family members or simply to feel wanted. Either way you slice it, the result is not good.

Now for some, this is not a big deal or even a real issue. Settling for any ol' person works and doing what it takes to be with a partner is up for grabs so long as the person us available. For others, the idea of settling for mediocrity sucks, but it's done any way for the sake of being able to have someone to call a "boyfriend/girlfriend". Although single people see the red flags and no-no's in a person they meet, they're willing to settle down any way and "make it work".

The reality is, it's quite a challenge to meet someone that meets your basic criteria, and you meet theres.

However, it's definitely possible and there's no real need to rush a relationship in order to keep up with social media norms or what the invisible voices of society tell you. Settling for the "right now" or the "whatever" will have you on a spinning wheel trying to find what works and it'll have you resorting for the bottom-feeders in a sea of "what could be".

Single people these days are meeting tons of men and women to date, but are leaning towards mediocrity out of mere desperation. Because of societal pressures, age-based timelines and access to an abundance of potential daters, single people are settling for any thing, even if it means lowering their standards! Requirements and beliefs go out of the window for some single folks, and settling for crap is done all in the name of having a silly title.

My advice? Take your time meeting someone, let your standards lead you and don't commit to what you know could be your downfall in dating.

Palm Islands are three artificial islands, Palm Jumeirah, Deira Island and Palm Jebel Ali, on the coast of Dubai, United Arab Emirates. Creation of the islands started in 2001. Only Palm Jumeirah has been completed. This island takes the form of a palm tree, topped by a crescent.

After completion, Palm Jebel Ali will take a similar shape.
