The County Government of Kiambu has set aside 300 million shillings to be distributed to youth, women and persons with disabilities for business start-ups or expansion.

This comes through an act of Kiambu County Assembly (2014).

The money has been made available for both individuals and groups of at least five people. Individuals are eligible up to a total of 100,000 shillings while group can get as much as 500,000 shillings.

Kiambu Biashara fund is one of the most renowned projects from the department of youth affairs, sports and communication that has benefited thousands of youths, women and persons with disability.

William Kabogo Gitau is the first Governor of Kiambu County. He was overwhelmingly elected in 2013 for the top seat in the county where he has formed the first devolved government in Kiambu.

His Excellency William Kabogo joined politics in 2012 as a young man and won the Juja parliamentary seat. Since then, he has been known to have initiated numerous development projects, including provision of tapped water, installation of electricity, and road construction works as well as proper management of the bursary fund, construction of health centers and schools.

In 2007, he defended his position for the Juja Parliamentary seat, which he controversially lost to George Thuo in a disputed election. In April 2010, he won a rigorous court battle brought about by his filing a petition to the High Court against George Thuo and that led to annulment of the latter’s election results.

To date, William Kabogo is highly rated among the Members of 10th Parliament for being one of the most inquisitive and one who sought ministerial statements at the behest of his constituents. H.E William Kabogo is keen on transforming the entire Kiambu County to be the place to live, work, invest and grow.

is with great pleasure and honor that I pen down this foreword to the Kiambu Monitor, the first newspaper of the County.

This newspaper provides a clear image of Kiambu County and our commitment to information delivery to you. It also presents immense opportunities for investment in the County.

It is my belief that this newspaper will enable readers expand their horizons and knowledge of Kiambu County, while at the same time, being an enabler to the potential investors who wish to make investment decisions and all the people seeking information, not only about the County Government, but also about the County at large.

My government is committed to transforming Kiambu County to be the best County in which to Invest in, Live, Grow and Work. This will only be achieved through impacting lives, provision of effective governance and empowerment of the people of Kiambu through stakeholder participation.

These sentiments were also emphasized by the deputy governor H.E Gerald Githinji saying that Kiambu County Government was ready and willing to assist the youth in every way possible especially in ways that provide grounds for job creation.

The minister for Youth Affairs, Sports and Communication Hon. Machel Waikenda on his part said that one of the objectives of his department was to improve the access to employment information and opportunities for the youths by organizing training events across the county.

He said that this trend was going to continue as more partners are to be incorporated into the trainings and because of the high turnout by the youths it demonstrated that they truly require such trainings.

he department of Youth Affairs, Sports and Communication has partnered with Albhai Sharrif and Sadoline in a skills enhancement programme in Kiambu; a partnership which enabled the training of over 1200 youths, women and people with disabilities on Painting, woodwork, electrical, welding and fabrication, car wash and cleaning.

Skills enhancement training has been one of the deficiency that youths from Kiambu County have been lacking as many of them do not have mentors whom they can learn from or emulate.

The fee required for one to be trained for such ventures is usually not pocket friendly and is thus a challenge to many.

Welding, fabrication, electrical installation and woodwork have targeted youths with previous knowledge to enhance their skills and to inform and educate them on the new equipment on the market. Home to the country’s coffee, horticulture, tea and dairy industry, Kiambu plays a key role in food security in Kenya, especially to the country’s capital Nairobi and its environs which relies on the County to feed the growing urban population.

“The county is also a major player in the foreign exchange flows into Kenya through its dominant position as a major producer of coffee, tea, dairy and horticultural produce.

“Some of the investment opportunities related to agriculture, Livestock and Fisheries in Kiambu County include: “Kiambu County is the biggest producer of milk in Kenya, producing about 800,000 litres per day. However, most of this milk is sold in its raw form. Investment opportunities on value addition of milk which will include pasteurizing milk, making powdered milk, cheese, butter and other forms of dairy products and packaging.

“Kiambu farmers have embraced hydroponics technology for fodder production which is very appropriate in the County due to the small land sizes. Investment opportunities in this area include supplying the materials required for constructing the units as well as supplying cereals.

“More than 500 rabbits, 2,100 cows, 600 sheep and goats are slaughtered per week in Kiambu County. Manufacturing industry on hides and skins would be very much welcome in the County.

“Kiambu County is endowed with a variety of resources ideal for fisheries activities.

Investment opportunities in this area include feed production which is one of the main challenges in fish farming in Kiambu and supply of fingerlings.

“Fish processing factory would be very much welcome since the fish produced here is marketed without value addition.
