Saddle Fitting Revolution An exact measurement of the horse’s back is crucial for a well fitting saddle, creating optimal riding pleasure, performance and safety for both the horse and rider.

Every Saddlery Warehouse Branch has the Topographer Pro in store with staff that have been fully trained. The online Equiscan platform allows for the exact 98 point measurement to be recorded so that future measurements can recall the data for comparison to account for any changes in the horse’s condition.

After the horse has been accurately measured, the information is sent on line to a qualified saddle fitter that will make any adjustments that may need to be made.

HOW TO FIT RUGS DENIER Denier

Denier is a unit of measurement relating to the thickness of yarn or thread. The higher the denier the stronger and hard-wearing the outer should be.

BREATHABLE Breathable

It is important to have breathable qualities in a rug as it allows any moisture to pass through the rug which helps keep the horse warm, dry and comfortable.

RIPSTOP Ripstop

Ripstop fabric has reinforced treads which help contain a tear in the rug making it cheaper to repair.

Unfortunately it does not stop the rug from ripping, but it will help the tear from extending.

WATERPROOF Water Proof

The waterproofing on a synthetic rug is laminated to the underside of the fabric during the manufacturing process. This process protects the horse from getting wet, keeping the horse more comfortable.

POLYFILL Polyfill

Polyfill is the warm insulation inside the rug. The more fill in a rug the warmer the horse will be.

BUYING THE RIGHT SIZE RUG?

Buying the right size rug is crucial for your horses comfort and well being. An ill fitting rug can slip, cause rubs, discomfort and even injury to your horse.

It’s easy to achieve a good fit - here are our top tips: • Rug sizes are measured in feet and usually go up in three inch increments.

• As horses type and build vary it’s best to measure your horse from the top of the wither to the tail using a tape measure.

• When trying on your new rug, place a sheet between the horse and the rug to prevent hairs and mud transferring.

That way if it doesn’t fit it can be returned to the retailer in a saleable condition.

HOW CAN I TELL IF THE RUG FITS?

The rug should fit well over the withers and the shoulders so that the horse can move freely without the rug slipping back. The straps should be tight enough to hold the rug in place, but not so tight they cause the rugs shape to distort on the horses back. If too tight they may cause pressure points around the horses chest and wither area. Cross surcingles should be fastened so you can fit a hands breadth between the surcingles and the horses body. This means that the straps are tight enough to prevent legs becoming caught should the horse lie down, but not so tight to cause discomfort.

Leg straps should be fastened so the left strap is passed around the left hind leg and fasten back to the left side.

The right strap should then pass around the right hind leg, loop through the left strap, and then fasten to the right side.

There should be about 4”-5” between the strap and the horses leg to prevent the rug from slipping.
