Let’s look at some facts:

1. The January 1st 2024, Bi-Annual Cattle Report confirmed the following: • The US Beef Cow herd is under the 2014 low point and it is the smallest herd since 1951 and getting smaller!

• The Nation’s cattle herd, all cattle & calves, was counted at -2.0% from last year, January 1st, 2023. The US cow herd is still in the liquidation phase of the cattle cycle in 2023.

• In Summary - an inventory of 87.2 million is the smallest cattle inventory number going back to 1951. Second, the calf crop, at 33.593 million, is the smallest calf crop on record. Third, calf inventory under 500 pounds, at 13.284 million (97%), was smaller than expected. And fourth, beef replacement heifers, at 99% (4.858 million) was smaller than expected.

• Quoting Dennis Smith (ADM), “Zero heifer retention and smaller calves than expected is bullish feeder futures. If the report is bullish toward feeders, then it’s also bullish toward deferred Live Cattle futures!”

2. Weather - rain has been abundant in the drought-stricken areas, cost of gains have been dropping with the price of corn in decline, and the consumer is not backing away from BEEF!! It has never been more important to plan for your replacement needs and to make an investment in your cow herd now!

In 2019, we received the Hojer Ranch catalog and saw an immediate opportunity for herd improvement with their open to bred heifer program. We had such great success with our first year purchases that we went back for seconds. The Hojer cattle perform like the catalogue says.

My first calves were getting as good or better weaning weight numbers than their contemporaries and that was with no added inputs. I trust the program, the people have been great, and it’s been a great way for us to import some American genetics to mix with our Canadian herd in a really affordable way, even with our marginal Canadian Peso.

CARCASS!!

In a SmartCross study conducted by Colorado State University Research Foundation, Angus and Hereford based commercial cows were mated to Gelbvieh, Balancer and Angus sires to evaluate growth and carcass characteristics, The results of the study confirmed a 16 pound advantage in average weaning weights on the Gelbvieh sired calves. The Gelbvieh and Balancer sire groups also had heavier carcass weights over the Angus sires.

Carcass weights have seen a 44% improvement in Gelbvieh cattle since 2000, and Balancer cattle have seen a 63% improvement over the same time frame.

Marbling has seen a 22% improvement in Gelbvieh cattle since 2000, while Balancer cattle have seen a 165% improvement in the same time frame.

I contacted Blake in the spring of 2020, inquiring about their heifer program, which I found very interesting. I was unable to make the trip and pick the heifers out myself, so I trusted the Hojers and agreed to move forward sight unseen. My criteria were good disposition and larger frame. The 50 heifers arrived in October and calved in March of 2021. Overall, I am very happy with the heifers and would definitely do it again.
