by Jenelle Grewell It may be a struggle to come up with lunch options for the kids that fit all the criteria. Is it good for them? Will they actually eat it?

Will it take too much time out of an already busy day to make? Here are some ideas for school lunches that will make everyone happy.

First things first, I recommended getting a lunch box that you can section off and help portion out fruits, veggies, proteins, and other options that come in the kiddos’ lunch boxes.

Deli Pinwheels: Reinvent the sandwich. You can even make PB&J pinwheels. Simply substitute bread for wraps. Put some extra greens into that fun shape to give your little ones more veggies.

Quesadilla: They don’t need to be piping hot to be good. The best thing about quesadillas is that you can make a little or a lot. The best part is you can make them out of different proteins, veggies and cheese so you can customize them for your child.

Breakfast: Yes, you read that correctly. When you make a big breakfast on the weekends, make a few extra pancakes, hard boiled eggs and yummy breakfast meat. Perfect for a lunch box.

Hummus and Pita: Minimal effort and full of good protein. Simply cut up some pita bread into slices and portion out some hummus. Add carrots or other veggies to make it even healthier.

Finger Foods: Think cubed cheese, whole-wheat crackers, cut veggies and some healthy dips. It will be like a mini party but in your kid’s lunch box. I am sure they will have fun eating with their hands too.

Pizza Roll Ups: Put all those tasty pizza ingredients in a wrap and you can give your kids a healthier pizza option. The best part is you can control how much cheese, sauce, meat, and veggies they are geting.

Pasta Salad: Pasta is just so easy. Again, more customization and plenty of opportunities to get healthy proteins and veggies to the kids and use whole wheat pasta.

Of course you can jam pack your child’s lunch with cut fruit and vegetables. You would be surprised at what does not have to be refrigerated, especially considering plants don’t grow refrigerated. As for non-fresh fruit and veggie options, try popcorn instead of chips or nut-free trail mix or pretzels.

With school starting back, weekday mornings are straight chaos. Getting the kids ready for school while you are getting ready for work is exhausting. This causes many parents to hand out sugar-filled unhealthy options for breakfast when trying to rush out the door. That is why we wanted to share with you two amazing and healthy breakfast options that can be made the night before, so in the morning it can be a grab-and-go situation. Who says healthy can't be fast?

Apple Cinnamon Overnight Oats ½ cup Quaker Old Fashioned Oats ½ cup almond milk ½ cup diced apple Squeeze of lemon 2 teaspoon honey ⅛ teaspoon cinnamon 2 tablespoon granola 1. To begin, mix the oats and almond milk in a glass jar. Then, add a little lemon juice to your apples, and add it to the jar. Lastly, sprinkle the cinnamon. Pop into the fridge overnight.

2. In the morning, top with granola and honey.

Chia Pudding ¼ cup chia seeds 1½ cups almond milk 1 tablespoon maple syrup ¼ teaspoon cinnamon pinch of sea salt ½ tablespoons orange juice lemon zest seasonal fruit 1. In a large mason jar, combine your chia seeds, milk, maple syrup, cinnamon, salt, orange juice, and lemon zest.

2. Allow chilling for 30 minutes before stirring. Refrigerate overnight.

3. Top with fresh fruit and serve.

When children get home from school, they are hungry.

They turn into little snacktime goblins. Thankfully there are so many recipes that can be made the weekend before, and last the entire week. These delicious recipes can do just that.

Whip them up and give them a try this school year.

Chocolate Chip Cookies 2 1⁄4 cups all-purpose flour • 1 teaspoon baking soda • 1⁄2 teaspoon salt 1 cup softened butter • 3⁄4 cup packed brown sugar • 1 egg 3 ⁄4 cup granulated sugar • 1 teaspoon vanilla 2 cups semisweet chocolate chips To begin, mix flour, baking soda, and salt in a small bowl. In another larger bowl, beat your butter and sugars with an electric mixer until fluffy. Next, beat in egg and vanilla until smooth. You will then carefully add the flour mixture. Once smooth, add your chocolate chips. Grease your pan and carefully spoon out dough pieces. About one tablespoon each. Add into your oven that has been pre-heated to 375 degrees and allow to bake for 10 minutes. Allow to cool.

Homemade Blueberry Muffins 1 1⁄2 cups all-purpose flour • 3⁄4 cup granulated sugar 1 ⁄4 teaspoon salt • 1 large egg • 1⁄3 cup skim milk 2 teaspoons baking powder • 1⁄3 cup vegetable oil 1 1⁄2 teaspoons vanilla extract 6 to 8 ounces fresh blueberries To begin, whisk together your dry ingredients and set them to the side. Next, mix your wet ingredients in a separate bowl. Add your wet mixture to the bowl with dry ingredients then use a fork to combine. Fold in the blueberries. Fill up muffin liners about 3⁄4ths of the way full. Bake in a preheated 400-degree oven for 15 to 20 minutes. Remove from the oven and allow to cool completely.

Key Lime Martini The Key Lime Martini tastes a lot like a Key Lime Pie. It features vanilla vodka, Coco Lopez, pineapple juice, cream and graham cracker crumbs on the rim of the glass.

Gin Sour The Gin Sour is another cocktail from the sour family, which includes the whiskey sour and Amaretto sour. This is an old school style of cocktail, which means it’s really all about the flavor of the liquor.

2 ounces vanilla vodka 1 ⁄2 ounce key lime juice 2 tbsp Coco Real cream of coconut 1 ounce pineapple juice 1 ounce heavy cream Graham cracker crumbs

2 ounces gin 1 ounce lemon juice 1 ⁄2 teaspoon superfine sugar

Rim a cocktail glass with the graham cracker crumbs.

Fill a martini shaker with ice and put all the other ingredients in it. Shake thoroughly and strain into a chilled martini glass. Garnish with a wheel of lime or a lime twist.

Fill a cocktail shaker halfway with ice cubes.

Pour in all the ingredients.

Shake until chilled.

Strain the mixture into a sour glass.

Garnish with an orange wheel and a maraschino cherry.

This old classic drink recipe blends Gosling’s Black Seal Rum with ginger beer and a squeeze of lime juice.

Think of the Dark ‘n’ Stormy as the Moscow Mule with rum instead of vodka.

2 ounces Gosling’s Black Seal Rum 4 ounces ginger beer Lime wedge Fill a highball glass with ice.

Pour in the rum. Pour in the ginger beer.

Garnish with a lime wedge.

Captain & Loco Drink 2 ounces Captain Morgan LocoNut ⁄ ounce Captain Morgan Original Spiced Rum

Fill a cocktail shaker with ice. Pour in both ingredients and shake until chilled. Strain into a rocks or martini glass over ice.

It’s summertime, and with Covid 19 restrictions lessened, we can enjoy outside activities. All the sports we could not do before are suddenly thrust in front of us: heightening the excitement of participation.

This is when accidents involving the teeth and mouth are more frequent.

One out of two children ages eight to twelve will sustain a dental injury.

Dental accident’s that lead to the loss of a permanent tooth are traumatic to a child’s self image or oral bone growth and tooth positioning.

A partial fracture or total tooth loss demands immediate attention, since a malocclusion can occur within a number of days as a result of a disruption in tooth alignment.

A permanent tooth that has been knocked out must be replanted as soon as possible. The best results as seen if this are accomplished in 30 minutes but before 2 hours.

The tooth and any attached fibers must be kept moist. Milk is suitable for this, but if not available, saliva or blood is good. Primary, or baby teeth are not replanted because of the high risk of injury to the permanent tooth under it in the bone.

If the tooth was not knocked out but instead had a large piece fractured off, that piece may be able to be reattached. This is the ideal method for restoring a fractured tooth to proper color and contour. However, the missing piece is not always located. Teeth that have sustained these types of trauma need to be evaluated at routine intervals to check healing or the development of pathology that would need more adjusting before damaging adjoining structures.

If organized sports that may cause oral injuries are a part of your children’s activities, then a soft mouth guard (as seen with college and professional athletes) is an absoute requirement to prevent or greatly lessen the effect of a blow to the mouth.

Summer is the perfect time to host a garage sale. Not only is the weather phenomenal, but many people have some spare time to clean out their homes and attend other people's sales. In order to have a successful event, it takes a little bit of preparation.

Try out these convenient tips and tricks to ensure your garage sale goes smoothly.

Have a lot of items Having only a table or two of items can cause people to not stop when driving past your garage sale. The more items you have displayed, the more tempted they will be to stop their car. Team up with friends or family if you do not have too many items to get rid of.

Clean the items If the things you wish to sell are covered in dirt or grime, nobody is going to want to purchase them. Make sure to take the time to clean them off with a rag before setting them out for purchase.

Organization Nobody wants to walk up to pure chaos. Be sure to lay out your items by category. A good rule of thumb is to have a kid's section, kitchen area, clothes, decor, and household furniture.

Advertise You are going to want to ensure that you spread the word about your garage sale. A few great methods of achieving this is posting in local Facebook groups and putting bright and attention-catching signs out on nearby main roads.

Offer bags Save a few of those grocery bags leading up to your garage sale and keep them by your checkout table. If someone purchases multiple items, they will surely appreciate a bag to help them carry things back to their car.

Be sure to protect you and your children from the potential dangers of exposure to the hot summer sun Recreation time spent in the great outdoors is fun for the whole family, but it is also important to remember to be safe in order to maximize the fun and minimize the risk. One important safety precaution is taking care of your skin. Skin is considered the largest organ in the body and its protection is vital to your health. This year, there is a lot of discussion revolving around sunscreen products, how effective they are, what they protect against, and whether or not they are actually making you more likely to develop skin cancer lesions or Vitamin D deficiencies.

After reviewing the most recent studies and information, there is contradictory information.

Some studies state that sunscreen can in fact be harmful and constant use can result in a Vitamin D deficiency, while others, including the Skin Cancer Foundation, argue against this “since all unprotected UV exposure contributes to cumulative skin damage, accelerating aging and increasing our lifetime risk of skin cancer.” We have been told for years to apply sunscreen liberally to protect ourselves from the harmful effects of UVA and UVB rays. In recent years they have added recommendations for hats, rash guard shirts and limited exposure.

Despite the conflicting reports that we see in the media, skin cancer is on the rise; a fact not in dispute. We recommend you start the summer by selecting a good sunscreen. The Skin Cancer Foundation recommends SPF 15 or higher. You can check out the Skin Cancer Foundation website at: http://www.skincancer.org/ for information on aging, Vitamin D, sunscreen, guidelines and more. The website provided by the Environmental Working Group also gives you the opportunity to look at the sunscreen you currently use and allows you to search safer more effective products, http://www.ewg.org/2010sunscreen/best-beachsport-sunscreens/.

This website provides a very comprehensive list of available sunscreens and is very user friendly to research options. It is also important and recommended to do head-to-toe skin examinations every month to look for changes in skin coloration or abnormalities, and add a skin check to your annual physical. Check out the following tips and don’t forget to have some safe and healthy fun in the sun!

Other tips for a safe day at the local pool!

1. Hydration & nutrition: drink lots of water and bring healthy food options with you to the pool.

2. Shower: before you get in to rinse off body oils, and after to rinse off chlorine.

3. Plan breaks out of the water and out of the sun: kids are not always aware of how cold they are or how much water they need.

So what are we to do?

Let’s start with SPF ratings. Most people believe that as you go up in your SPF rating you are getting better protection from UVA/UVB rays; in fact, an SPF 15 blocks 93% of rays, SPF 30 blocks 97%, and SPF 50 blocks 98%. It may seem like a small difference, but everything helps. Additionally, SPF only refers to the UVB; you must look for a product that specifically provides UVA protection.

Then we look at a common additive in sunscreens – Vitamin A. Vitamin A is an anti-oxidant

Don’t forget natural sunscreen options: 1. Wear a hat or visor that protects your face and/or ears from direct exposure.

2. Use clothing options that protect the sensitive skin: shoulders, elbows, knees and feet.

3. Look into rash guard shirts to wear in the water.

4. Use trees, pavilions, and umbrellas to avoid direct exposure to the sun, especially when the rays are strongest and most harmful; between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m.

The bat population of Fort Campbell and Tennessee is incredible, so why not celebrate International Bat Night on August 30 and 31.

caused by a fungus that has killed millions of bats in the United States and forced the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service to place the gray bat on the endangered species list after extreme declines in the population. In some cases, over 90 percent of bats occupying a single cave have been known to die from White Nose Syndrome.

Several caves have also been placed on moratorium to try to restore the bat populations. There is no treatment or cure available for bats affected by White Nose Syndrome. White Nose Syndrome is thought to be harmless to humans, as no known illnesses have occurred from exposure to infected caves and bats.

On a clear night, you may catch a glimpse of the winged animals flying across the sky, scouring for insects or perching upside down on a tree branch nearby. While you may be inclined to believe that bats are birds, they are, in fact, mammals. They do not lay eggs. They are the only mammals capable of flying for extended periods of time.

Bats are nocturnal by nature and prefer to be active at night. They sleep during the day in a position called “roosting.” Despite their nocturnal behavior, bats cannot see well. Instead, bats use sound waves, called echolocation, to pinpoint where things are in relation to where they fly. Their extremely heightened hearing allows them to fly as well as “see”.

Their echolocation also helps them to locate insects to eat, even in midflight.

Bats snack on a variety of insects from flies and mosquitoes to moths and other various bugs. There are only a few species of bats that only drink blood, but these bats are not native to the Clarksville/Fort Campbell area. Also, they do not usually drink human blood, and contrary to what some books may tell you, being bitten by a bat will not turn you into a vampire.

However, in the event that you are bitten by a bat, you should seek medical attention immediately.

Bats sleep upside down because it puts them at the optimal position for takeoff. Bats can’t launch themselves into flight using their wings. Instead, they use their claws and climb to high places and fall into flight to takeoff. Sleeping upside down also makes it harder for prey to attack the bats.

The most common bat found in the area is the wintering gray bat. The gray bat gets its name from the dark gray fur that grows on its back. The gray bat is also part of a group of unique bats called Myotis.

These bats have wings that attach at the ankles. The exact number of bats in the area is unknown.

However, employees from Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency survey the bat population during the winter to try to get an idea of how many bats are in our region. TWRA estimates that there are

approximately 900,000 gray bats in the Fort Campbell surrounding community.

Every year, gray bats migrate from caves near lakes, rivers, and ponds that are in locations containing large quantities of limestone during the summer, to vertical caves during the winter. Bats enjoy living close to rivers and lakes because insects are readily available for them to eat.

These caves also serve as the home and mating grounds for the bat population. The female bats give birth to their youngling in late May or early June.

Later in the summer, the bats molt and new fur grows.

One of the local caves that gray bats inhabit is Dunbar Cave. This local gem contains a wealth of Native American history and petroglyphs. However, Dunbar Cave has been closed to the public until further notice due to the spread of White Nose Syndrome among the bat population. People can still walk the trails and visit Swan Lake.

White Nose Syndrome is the biggest health concern facing gray bats. This illness is

People can help gray bats and other endangered bat species by understanding how their habitats are destroyed and how this leads to the loss of these species.
