Bi-Monthly Newsletter of the Nashville Emmaus Community

August 2016

We live in troubling times, I am almost afraid to turn on the TV or radio, because of the news that I am afraid that I might hear. Was there a car wreck, how many shootings occurred, what new crazy thing happened in the political world and a thousand other questions flood our daily thoughts. The world needs to discover again the peace, love, power, and forgiveness of the Risen Christ. You and I can and must show Christ to a messy world. It was a messy world as the disciples walked to Emmaus, as a matter of fact it has always been a messy world. Pain and disillusionment have always tried to invade our life and steel our joy. Just as the Risen Christ was revealed to the TWO on the road to Emmaus, you and I are to show him again to all who are walking a lonely, dusty, and anxious road. May Christ shine on you, in you, and through you in the 4th days of your life Decolores, Randy On July 8-10, thirty-three young adults from across the United States and Puerto Rico attended the first Journey to the Table at The Upper Room in Nashville, Tennessee. The Upper Room hosted the first Journey to the Table, a program rooted in the tradition of Emmaus and Chrysalis, as a way to kick-off the program, generate interest, and garner support from campus ministries and Emmaus communities across the country. “The first Journey to the Table was a time of meaningful conversation, worship, and growth for all involved,” said Geoffrey Parker, Journey to the Table Program Manager and chief architect of the program’s design. “Participants and team members came from multiple locations throughout the U.S. and Puerto Rico, and we are hopeful that Journey to the Table will be useful in their ministries back home.” Journey to the Table seeks to create safe spaces for young adults to engage in faith-based conversations about their lives. Future events will be held by campusministries, young adult ministries in local churches, and Emmaus communities around the world. “The Journey to the Table weekend was a great experience,” said Mario, a participantin the JTT kick-off weekend. “It was cool to be in community with a group of young adults and to experience God together. I hope others get to enjoy this experience in the future.” Thank you for the support of everyone who came to volunteer behind the scenes, who sent agape items, and who held us in prayer throughout the time. In particular, thank you Patrice Rullo for helping coordinate all of these efforts. You all made this a great experience for everyone involved, and brought to fruition years of development work. You can follow the progress of Journey to the Table online at Journey.UpperRoom.org. Online training courses will be coming out soon to allow Emmaus Communities to start this new ministry for 18 to 35 year olds.

FACT or Rumor Is It True? Emmaus Rumor or Fact

I’ve discovered while serving on the Board that there is a good bit of confusion and rumors taken for fact in our community and I’m sure most communities. This column is to dispel or verify the item, sort of a Snopes.com for Nashville Emmaus. I invite you to email info@nashvilleemmaus.org items you would like verified or dispelled. Is it true…

Only those who have been through Emmaus, Chrysalis or Face to Face can attend the Gatherings.

Rumor!

You are welcome to bring family members or other guests to the Gatherings. This is a great opportunity for people to get introduced to the community and have the opportunity to ask questions about the Walks, especially if they are considering attending a Walk.

Emmaus is a United Methodist Program.

Partial Rumor!

“The Upper Room is a subsidiary corporation of the General Board of Discipleship of The United Methodist Church, which now does business as Discipleship Ministries. As an entity of The United Methodist Church, The Upper Room is governed by the Book of Discipline, which directs it to produce resources in spiritual formation that are interdenominational and international in scope.” It is an ecumenical program that welcomes Christians from all Denominations.

You have to wait to send in a Pilgrims Registration until 6 weeks before the Walk.

Rumor!

You can send in registrations a year in advance. If something comes up that prevents the Pilgrim from going on the requested Walk, it can simply be moved to the next Walk. Or, if the dates of the upcoming walk conflict with the Pilgrim’s schedule, they can go ahead and register for the following walk. The sooner the Pilgrim gets registered the sooner they are bathed in prayer. The Fall Men’s team is formed; the Women’s team is forming. We have started to build the Men’s Spring 2017 team and will begin on the Spring Women’s team as soon as the Fall team is finalized. So don’t wait to send in those registrations!

You have to have been a Weekend Lay Director to be on the Board.Y

Rumor! You do need some experience in the Conference Room and in the Background; but, you don’t have to be an expert. The local Community Board is to administer the Walks following the guidelines of the International Emmaus Office. We are taking nominations for board members to begin a 3-year term beginning January 2017. If you know of someone with a passion for Emmaus, good leadership and organizational skills, contact one of the board members to nominate that person. We will then contact them to explain the duties and ask if they accept the nomination. You can even nominate yourself.

Enough for now, what have you heard? If there is something keeping you from sponsoring or if you are unsure about something you’ve heard. Email Info@nashvilleemmaus.org and we’ll chase it down and share our findings in the next Candlelight (no names will be shared). If you have a question or uncertainty chances are someone else does to.
