The Benefits of a Bicycle

Jennifer Dent

Many learn to ride a bike during their adolescent years. For most people under the age of 16, it’s their preferred method of transportation. Unfortunately, once teenagers are able to acquire the coveted driver’s license, most bicycles are usually stored away and never used again. Little do they know that when they put away that bicycle, they are closing a door to the numerous advantages and positive aspects it can bring to their lives.

• • •

You feel better – Cycling builds stamina and boosts energy. It can also reduce stress, anxiety and depression as well as improve your self-esteem. It strengthens your immune system – Cycling can help increase immune system cells within your body that help fight off viruses and bacteria and protect against certain kinds of cancer. It improves coordination –Maneuvering a bike through various terrains all while continuously peddling and managing speeds can build great body to eye coordination.

Not only is biking excellent for your health, it’s a great way to commute to and from work. Most people in the United States live within 5 miles of their workplace. Riding a bike to work instead of driving a car can save money, and have a considerable impact on the environment.

Let’s look at a few health benefits which may encourage you to get back on that bike: •

•

•

It keeps your heart healthy – Cycling improves your cardiovascular fitness. This improves your heart muscles and circulation, which lowers your cholesterol and your risk of high blood pressure, strokes and heart attacks. It’s an easy low-impact workout – Cycling is considered to be one of the easiest ways to exercise, not only because it can be done virtually anywhere and at any time of year, but because of the low impact it has on the human body. Riding a bike is easy on the joints and causes less strain on the knees, ankles and spine. You look better – Cycling tones your entire body and builds muscle, all while burning numerous calories and shedding excess weight. A regular routine will keep your looking fit and trim.

Lastly, it’s just plain fun! May is National Bike Month and what better way to celebrate than to dust off that old bicycle and take it for a spin. Getting out on your bike on a beautiful day can be invigorating and help clear your head. It might even make you feel like a kid again. And if you feel a bit competitive, Fort Knox Family & MWR will partner with CKW Racing to present The Annual Gold Rush Circuit Race on May 16. This is a unique course that surrounds the U.S. Army Human Resources Command Center located on Fort Knox at 1600 Spearhead Division Avenue. According to Duane Clayton, Adventure Programs Coordinator for Fort Knox FMWR, “It is open to anyone who wants to ride. Each registrant must have a valid 2015 USA Cycling License, but one-day licenses are available the day of the race. The cost ranges from $10 for the beginners to $35 for cycling enthusiasts. Any additional races are only $10. The race is a 1.6 mile closed circuit course.” To pre-register for this event, please visit www.Truesport.com. For additional information about this race, please contact Duane at (502) 624-1413.

Samuel Adams Brewhouse Is Open! By Laura Green Family and MWR Business Division and the brewers of Samuel Adams beer are very excited to bring a new, pub-style dining and entertainment experience to Fort Knox. The transformation of the former Landing Zone into the Samuel Adams Brewhouse is complete. As of late April, the Samuel Adams Brewhouse is open for business! Come hang out with your friends, maybe catch a game or two, have some food and libation and enjoy the casual, sports bar atmosphere. All ages are welcome. Join us at 2723 Spearhead Loop and satisfy your thirst for great beer and great food.

Now, for the food...Don’t worry! Some old favorites from the Landing Zone will still be available, such as their signature wings and the very popular Southern Buffet and Catfish Buffet. The Brewhouse offers something for everyone's taste buds including salads and appetizers, like quesadillas, pretzel sticks, fried pickles and beer chili-loaded tots! There are various burgers and sandwiches, handmade pizzas, steak, fried chicken and waffles, and fish and chips. And of course, there are daily desserts. Quick service lunch options are available. The Southern Buffet is served every Wednesday from 11 a.m. – 1 p.m. and the Fried Catfish Buffet every Friday from 11 a.m. – 1 p.m. All ages are welcome with a kids’ menu available. Lunch or dinner, dine in or take out, the Brewhouse offers an exceptional dining experience at affordable prices. The restaurant atmosphere is open and airy with a fresh, yet rustic feeling.

The Boston Beer Company is America’s leading brewer of handcrafted, full-flavored craft beers. Founder and Brewer, Jim Koch, brews Samuel Adams craft beers using the time-honored, traditional four-vessel brewing process, and the world’s finest all-natural ingredients. Jim started the company in 1984 with a family recipe dating back six generations. He chose the name Samuel Adams after the revolutionary thinker, independence fighter and brewer. For The Love of Beer! The Samuel Adams Brewhouse offers a selection of brews that will impress any “beer lover.” Brewhouse patrons will be able to explore and experience a variety of choices from the Samuel Adams draft and bottle selections. Draft selections include the original Samuel Adams Boston Lager, Rebel IPA, Cherry Wheat and Angry Orchard Crisp Apple hard cider. But hold on to your mug for Samuel Adams Seasonals like: Cold Snap, Summer Ale, OctoberFest and Winter Lager. And then there are Limited Release Seasonals like: Escape Route, Porch Rocker, Harvest Pumpkin Ale and White Christmas. In addition, the Samuel Adams Brewhouse will offer unique craft beers from the Traveler Beer Company including Curious Traveler Lemon Shandy, Illusive Traveler Grapefruit Ale and more! Bottle selections include Samuel Adams Seasonals, Sam Light, Sam Stout, Samuel Adams Rebel Rouser Double IPA, Rebel Rider Session IPA as well as unique and sophisticated Belgian-style beers from the Samuel Adams Barrel Room Collection. In addition to all of these great specialty beers, the Samuel Adams Brewhouse will also offer a traditional selection of draft and bottle beer. Are you thirsty yet?

Like the former Landing Zone, the Brewhouse will offer a variety of entertainment and special events like St. Patty’s Day, Cinco de Mayo, Loowow and more. The atmosphere is very casual. Almost 30 high-definition televisions have been placed throughout the restaurant to enhance the sports viewing experience, as well as allowing for multiple sporting events to be shown simultaneously. There is also a Sports Room with reclining chairs for viewing the multiple televisions…some patrons may never want to leave! Other services the Brewhouse will provide include a full bar, outdoor dining on the patio, catering, party arrangement availability, as well as a private room that accommodates 50 people, pre-order take out by phone, pool tables, a variety of sports packages, electronic bingo, t-shirts and pint glasses, and of course, great food and handcrafted brews! Because FMWR encourages responsible drinking, we offer a designated driver program and shuttle service to and from ANY location on the installation. For more information, please call (502) 942-0409.

Read to the Rhythm this Summer By Michael Steinmacher

Barr Memorial Library patrons are encouraged to Read to the Rhythm this summer as part of its annual Summer Reading program. There are programs and events for all ages, with events, activities and a self-directed program for children, teens and adults. The children and teen programs run June 6 through July 18, while the adult version spans May 4 through July 31. Reading logs are available beginning June 6 for the children and teen programs. The adult log becomes available May 4.

include making wind chimes, CD art, and cassette tape wallets. The teen program, ages 13-17, runs during the same period as the children’s program and, also like that program, teens completing it have a chance to win a grand prize. In this case, Nook Samsung 10” Tablet. The more logs the teen completes, the more chances he/she has to win. Teens completing the program will receive a special incentive prize bag as well. The program is, at its heart, all about reading. Children 12 and younger complete the program by reading for a total of 12 hours. Tracking their progress in a reading log, those children completing the program turn in their entry and receive a special Read to the Rhythm prize bag. Along with the prize bag, the children are entered in a random drawing for a grand prize in his/her age group. A grand prize will be awarded for ages 0-3, 4-6, 7-9, and 10-12. Children wishing to complete subsequent logs may do so, and each completed log equaling another chance in the grand prize drawing. The category the children fall into is determined by the age he/she is when the program begins on June 6.

The adult program closely resembles the teen program, with adults having a choice in how to complete their program. They can either read 10 books, or read five books and participate in five library programs. Those completing the program will receive a Read to the Rhythm incentive and be entered in a random drawing for a Nook Samsung 10” Tablet or a complete, autographed set of Tess Gerritsen’s Rizzoli and Isles book series. For more information about the reading programs or the special events associated with them, contact the Library at (502) 624-1232.

The actual reading is complemented all along the way by a variety of fun-filled programs for the family, including the story of “Peter and the Wolf” set to music, a mime and water show. Preschool Story Hour is offered at 10 a.m. on Tuesdays and participation in those programs count toward the child’s reading total. The teen program allows teens to read and participate in a way that allows customizable choices for their summer reading experience. Participants must read any six books, in addition to participating in or accomplishing four other tasks. Those tasks include everything from additional reading to participating in the weekly Teen Thursday programs at 3 p.m., whose activities will

Tying the Knot and Picking the Spot Another great MWR facility to consider when planning a wedding is Saber & Quill. With multiple rooms of various sizes and features, there is sure to be a room to suit your needs. Options include a large ballroom that can be broken off into three sections, and a few rooms that are Historical 1940s with fireplaces. Each of these rooms will add a touch of elegance to your wedding event. There is also a verandah which is a covered patio equipped with a grill, bar and fireplace.

By Kelly Morgan

The phrase “April showers bring May flowers,” although cliché and a little overused, seems to ring true each year. With May comes sunshine, warm weather and the blooming season. May also brings in wedding season, a time of mixed emotions both exciting and stressful, happy and overwhelming. Girls all over the world dream of one day having their wedding in the months of either May, June or July. Having a wedding in those months, however, could make booking vendors a challenge because of such high demand. Planning ahead proves vital in the peak wedding season. Booking venues, caterers, photographers and DJs, all must be done as soon as possible to ensure you secure who you want, before someone else does. Then comes dress purchasing, invitation ordering, flower choosing and honeymoon booking. Planning all of these things takes time and a lot of thought no matter how big or small you want your day to be. To make life simpler, Fort Knox Family and MWR has a few facilities and services available for wedding activities.

Once the wedding date is set and plans are made, the next step, and usually the most exciting step, is to plan the honeymoon. With all of the stress and time that goes into wedding planning, don't let the honeymoon plans become just another item to check off the list as soon as possible. The honeymoon is the perfect way for newlyweds to get away for some much needed relaxation after the stressors that accompany a wedding. Let the representatives at the Fort Knox Information, Ticketing and Registration (ITR) Leisure Travel Services Office help you to find the perfect location. They can help you book a honeymoon to almost any destination in the world. Whether you want to spend a weekend somewhere close, travel to a tropical place in the United States, or sightsee throughout Europe; they will do their best to take away the stress and to make your trip everything you hoped it would be. If a wedding is in your future, or in the future of someone you know, give these facilities a call and see how they can simplify your wedding planning process. For more information, pricing, and to make reservations call: Camp Carlson – (502) 624-4836 *All catering must be done through post.

Saber & Quill – (502) 942-0959 ITR – (502) 624-5030

For a beautiful ceremony and reception venue look no farther than Camp Carlson. Located right off Dixie Highway, this easy access location is the perfect way to keep the ceremony and reception in the same area and not sacrifice beauty in doing so. The gazebo is the perfect location for the ceremony to take place while Carlson Hall would be a great spot to hold a reception. Carlson Hall is a large A-frame building seating 175 guests with two outdoor patios for additional seating. If Camp Carlson is the place you hope to use to start your happily ever after, you must book well in advance, as it is a very popular destination.
