Spring break is a week that every family looks forward to. The kids are out of school, the Soldier can take leave, and it is time to break out the suitcases.

Many families hit the road this time of year, so we reached out to a few local military spouses to see what they had on their agenda! “We plan on taking our kids to Atlanta for a few days. We have been stationed here for 3 years and have never been. I figured it was now or never. We want to check out The Georgia Aquarium and The World of Coke.�

The gigantic 20-acre complex opened its doors to the public on May 24, 2007. Guests are allowed to taste all of the different sodas that Coca-Cola makes all over the world.

Have you ever found yourself wondering “Why does Daylight Savings Time even exist?” If you have, you are not alone. There is a long history behind it that many do not know. There is a lot more to it than just springing forward and falling back an hour.

One thing you might ask yourself is “When did it start?” Well, it was first used in Canada in 1908 in Port Arthur, Ontario. In 1916, Germany and Austria were a few of the other countries to use DST. It wasn’t popularized worldwide until Germany set the clocks ahead by 1 hour in the German Empire and in Austria on April 30, 1916. This was 2 years into World War I. They did this to minimize the use of artificial lighting in order to save fuel for the war effort.

A few weeks later, the idea was used by the United Kingdom, France, and many other countries. Many people don’t know that most of them reverted to standard time after World War I. It wasn’t until World War II that DST made its return in most of Europe.

If you are a fan of DST, you have a scientist from New Zealand named George Vernon Hudson to thank. Hudson presented a statement to the Wellington Philosophical Society in 1895 that proposed a 2-hour shift forward in October and a 2-hour shift back in March. Even though there was interest in the idea, but it was never pursued.

Many people believe that Benjamin Franklin was the first man to think of DST, but that was not the case. The idea that Franklin proposed did not even involve turning the clocks. It was discovered that Franklin wrote a letter to the editor of the Journal of Paris. It was titled “An Economical Project for Diminishing the Cost of Light”. It suggested that Parisians could conserve candle usage by getting people out of bed earlier in the morning. He was simply telling a joke.

The bill to bring Daylight Savings Time to the United States was passed in 1966. It was a part of the Uniform Time Act of 1966. All US states use DST except for Arizona, Hawaii, and the overseas territories of American Samoa, Guam, the Northern Mariana Islands, Puerto Rico, and the United States Virgin Islands.

In the United States, daylight saving time always starts on the second Sunday in March and ends on the first Sunday in November. The change takes place at 2:00 a.m. local time.

With all the history that comes with DST, it is here to stay. Be sure to set your clock ahead an hour Sunday, March 10 and prepare to lose an hour of sleep! Coffee anyone?

Erin is a city located in Houston County, Tennessee, United States. The population was 1,490 at the 2000 census, and 1,324 at the 2010 census. It is nicknamed the Irish Town Tennessee, because even though the town is small, they celebrate St. Patrick’s Day in a big way!

The town’s history states that in 1963, O.S. Luton and Beverly Price had the idea of a celebration of Erin’s Irish history and traditions. They petitioned the Chamber of Commerce, other local leaders, and interested citizens to help in this dream. It is said that the focus of the yearly event was to be the welfare, progress and promotion of Erin. The city warmed up to the idea rather slowly.

They liked the thought, but some felt it may be too much for such a small town. However, the “Wearing of the Green” was a huge success that year and it has continued to grow each year. They want everyone to come embrace the spirit of St. Patrick at one of the top ten celebrations in the United States!

The Houston County Chamber of Commerce said “Join us on each year, as we celebrate and be Irish for the Day! This celebration is the culmination of week-long festivities. Held in downtown Erin, TN, our parade travels from the Houston County Middle School to the Houston County Community Hospital.

A wonderful carnival is set up on Front Street.

A plethora of food and craft vendors can be found in the Erin Square, Front Street, Spring Street, and Adkins Street, as well as entertainment on the Square Stage.”

This year will be the 56th Annual event. The celebration will kick off on Friday, March 8, 2019, and continue until Saturday, March 16, 2019.

Dealing with Deployment

I am now a few weeks deep into my husband’s first deployment. I would like to say time is going by faster now, but that is not completely the truth. The truth is, I’m marking each day off one by one on the calendar that hangs up on my bedroom door.

Surprisingly, it helps to see how far we have already come. I am happy to report that things are getting a little easier for me. My boys and I are getting into a new routine and developing our new “normal” for the next few months.

I have been keeping myself busy by setting new goals for myself. Before my husband left, I told him he was going to come home to a healthier me. You see, before he left, I was still hanging on to about 20 extra pounds of baby weight. I am determined to get rid of it before he returns. Having my mind set on something is nice because I am not sitting around thinking about how much I miss my husband all the time.

This month has been one that I dreaded ever since he told me he was being deployed. Not only is February the month of love, it is also my husband’s birthday month. Once I got married, I thought I was guaranteed to have a sweet and romantic Valentine’s Day every year. Joke is on me though, because I didn’t consider that my husband would be thousands of miles away for it sometimes.

I have been avoiding the holiday section in Walmart, because it only makes me feel bitter at this point.

I’ve found happiness in something though. I absolutely love sending my husband care packages. I really enjoy thinking about what I am going to put in them and how I am going to decorate them. I plan on sending them often, so I constantly get to think of the theme for the next box. It makes me feel a little closer to him on the days that I don’t get a phone call.

Since his birthday is coming up, I got to make him a birthday box. Our sons colored him a little birthday picture that I know he is going to cherish.

Hopefully everything in the box arrives to him in one piece!

Another thing that has really helped me on the days that are tough is planning out our future. We plan on getting a new vehicle when he gets home, so I find myself searching car websites in my free time. A cruise is also on our to-do list, so I am having a blast planning out future outfits and activities.

At this point, I keep telling myself to keep busy. The more stuff I am doing, the less time I have to sit around and be sad. Even though this deployment has changed my life for a bit, I’m not going to let it control it. My little family is going to lace up its boots and keep on trucking, one day at a time.

Spouse’s Club Scholarships Every year The Fort Campbell Spouses’ Club awards scholarships and grants to military dependents and the local Fort Campbell area. Last year alone, they were able to give out 42 community grants and 20 scholarships. They raised $63,000 last year so that they could achieve this.

They currently offer two different scholarship opportunities. The first one is for graduating high school students, and the other is for any dependent wishing to continue their education. Guidelines and requirements to apply for the scholarships/grants are as follows:

2019 High School Scholarship The Spouses' Club gives scholarships to graduating dependent children of active-duty, retired or deceased military personnel. It can be awarded to all ranks. Anyone wishing to apply must be enrolled or plan to enroll full time in college or vocational school.

The child’s military sponsor must live within 40 miles of Fort Campbell. In special cases, the 40-mile requirement may be waived for applicants whose sponsors are on unaccompanied tours.

2019 Continuing Education Scholarship This Scholarship has the same requirements as the previous one, except it can also be awarded to spouses who are wanting to continue their education. Anyone wishing to apply must be enrolled or plan to enroll in college. This includes undergraduate, post-graduate study, or vocational school. High school graduates must enroll full-time; however, spouses may enroll full-time or part-time.

Community Grants The FCSC presents grants to local 501(c)3 non-profit organizations and schools in the Fort Campbell Area.

Getting kids to eat healthy can be tricky, and every parent seems to know that. It can be a huge fight to get your little one to eat nutritious snacks. Since March is National Nutrition Month, finding fun and healthy snacks became a mission.

I have found some super simple recipes that can be made in minutes, and they will for sure catch your child’s eye!

String Cheese Octopus Ingredients: String Cheese Blue Berries Instructions: All you must do is slice up the bottom half of the cheese into 8 pieces. Stand that creature up on a plate and stick a blueberry that has been cut in half onto the top half.

That is it! How easy, right?

A boring piece of string cheese is now an exciting sea creature!

Apple Slice Race Car Ingredients: Apples Grapes Toothpicks Instructions: Pierce the bottom of the apple slice with two tooth picks. Add the grapes at the end of the toothpicks to create the wheels. Complete!

Your little speed demon is sure to love this new take on a fruit filled snack!

Teddy Bear Toast Ingredients: Whole Wheat Bread Peanut Butter Banana Blue Berries Instructions: Slather your bread slice with a generous amount of peanut butter.

Next, add the bananas to make the ears and the nose. Add the blueberries to make the eye balls and to finish the nose. Done! It is such an adorable and tasty treat!

Celery and Apple Snail Ingredients: Peanut Butter Pretzels Apple Slices Chocolate Chips Instructions: Place the peanut butter inside of the celery. Use the peanut butter as a glue to place the apple slice in place to resemble the shell. Use the pretzels and the chocolate chips to add the details of the snail. Just like that, your snail is complete and ready to become a delicious treat!

March Rain Cocktail 1 ounce silver tequila 1 1⁄2 ounces Tia Maria 1 ounce Domaine de Canton Ginger Liqueur 1 ⁄2 ounce St. Germain Elderflower Liqueur 1 ⁄2 ounce Fernet Branca 1 ⁄2 ounce lime juice Put a few ice cubes in a shaker.

Pour in all the ingredients and shake until it’s chilled. Strain the mixture into a martini glass and garnish with lime.

Elderflower Martini 1 ounce St. Germain’s elderflower liqueur 1 ounce gin 1 ⁄2 ounce dry vermouth 1 ⁄2 ounce lime juice Pour the half-ounce of dry vermouth into a martini glass.

Swirl the vermouth around in the glass to get it up the sides.

Pour out the vermouth.

Fill a mixing glass halfway with ice cubes.

Pour in all the other ingredients.

Shake slowly until very cold.

Strain the mixture into the vermouth-swirled glass.

How to make green beer leprechaun style Step 1: Add food coloring to the glass You can pour the beer first and then add the food coloring, but it gets stuck in the foam and you have to stir it in and it never really looks nice. Now, when I was first testing different amounts of different colors, I had to add the food coloring after the initial pour, but I recommend doing it the other way. You’ll have to read the rest of the article and look at the pictures to decide which color food coloring, and how many drops, you want to use.

I went with three green drops of food coloring.

Step 2: Pour the beer Pour the beer into your glass, over the drop(s) of food coloring, and it will mostly stir up on its own as you pour.

If it needs a little more stirring, you can use a bar stir stick, which will agitate the foam so you don’t lose the head. (Stirring with a spoon tends to make the foam disappear, but in a pinch a knife, chopsticks, straw or anything that’s straight should work.)

Fun with Fido As the weather starts to warm up, our furry friends begin developing the urge to get outside and feel the sun on their fur. Dog parks are a great way for the local pups to get out and burn off all the stored-up energy that they have acquired over winter! It is crucial to keep your pets socialized and happy. Trips to the dog park are also amazing ways for their owners to meet new friends as well!

If you are interested in doggy play dates at the park, then you are in luck. The Fort Campbell area has multiple off-leash dog parks for your pup.

Heritage Bark Park This is an off-leash park for dogs of all sizes to enjoy. It offers a two-acre fenced in area. It is partly wooded for shade. The park is divided into 3 fenced sections, one for large dogs, small dogs, and an agility play area. Water is available at entry. It is open daily from dawn to dusk.

South Dog Park This on-post dog park offers two fenced in areas. There is one for large dogs as well as small dogs. It is just inside Gate 3.

The park has water fountains for playing pups. Benches are also around the park for owners to enjoy.

North Dog Park This is another park that is located on-post for your four-legged friend to enjoy. It is located near Gate 7.

It offers a great fenced in area for the dogs to run around and enjoy! Fort Campbell would like to remind all visitors of the breed restrictions it has in place.

Hopkinsville Dog Park Bring Fido to Hopkinsville Dog Park to enjoy some off-leash fun. The park offers a completely fenced in area with shade areas, trash bins, agility items, water fountains, picnic tables and more.

It is located at the Pardue Lane Trailhead. It is open from dawn to dusk, seven days a week, unless otherwise posted.

Working out once you have kids can get difficult. If your gym does not have child care, then you must depend on your spouse or a babysitter to watch your kids for you to workout. If your spouse is away, then depending on a babysitter can get pricey. Luckily for Fort Campbell and the surrounding areas, they have a great workout activity called iStroll LLC Clarkville. iStroll is a phenomenal stroller workout. It gives Moms and Dads the opportunity to be physically active, but it also keeps your little ones entertained and happy too. iStroll says they are “advocating for a healthy next generation by being fit parents.”

USO 10 Miler Attention runners!

Do you love to run? We have some great news for you. The 8th Annual USO Ten Miler, 5K, and Free Fun Run is right around the corner! The race will be held on Saturday, March 16th. The start and finish line has moved to Fort Campbell’s Division Parade Field.

With the run being at Fort Campbell’s Division Parade Field, it means you will NOT end on that brutal hill. You do get to enjoy the Mabry Hill around mile 7. The 5K runners won't get a hill at all. The Fun runners will make a single, easy loop around the Division Parade Field, and won't have crazy turns to navigate.

It also means that the 5K runners will get to pass the USO on Desert Storm! Runners will get to use the USO for the VIP Village (with a shuttle back and forth!), with all the indoor bathrooms, comfy chairs, and snack bar accessibility you may want.

Finally, there will be no need for shuttles for an overflow parking scenario! That's right – there will be LOADS of parking at the Division Parade Field, and your arrival should be stress free!

1/502 Vietnam Memorial The 502nd Infantry Regiment is an airborne infantry regiment in the United States Army. The regiment was created shortly after the United States entered World War II and they were assigned as a regiment of the 101st Airborne Division. The regiment saw a lot of action in World War II and was deactivated in 1945, shortly after the end of the war.

North Vietnamese Army. It was the scene of extremely heavy fighting during the Vietnam War. A specific battle between the People’s Army of Vietnam and the soldiers of the United States and South Vietnam began on March 9, 1966 and lasted until March 10, 1966. During the battle, the U.S. special forces team lost five brave men and twelve were wounded.

They were reactivated in 1956. Upon reactivation, the 502nd Infantry has served in the Vietnam War, the first Gulf War, Operation Iraqi Freedom, Operation Enduring Freedom in Afghanistan, and Operation Inherent Resolve in Iraq.

The Rescue of Dustoff 65 was a battle that took place April 1968 during the Vietnam War. A Medivac helicopter was preparing to evacuate wounded soldiers when a rocket hit the tail rotor, forcing the helicopter down into the jungle. A rescue team spent five days finding, retrieving and extracting the men from the crashed helicopter while fighting off communist forces. Crew Chief James Richardson lost his life in the fight.

On February 10, 1972, the men of 1/502 returned to Fort Campbell.

This monument focuses on the brave soldiers that lost their lives in the Vietnam War. 1/502 fought for five years in The Republic of South Vietnam.

Two major and notable battles that 1/502 fought in during the Vietnam War was the “A Shau Valley” and the “Rescue of Dustoff 65.”

A Shau Valley was one of the key entry points into South Vietnam for men and material brought along the Ho Chi Minh trail by the
