Here we are, nearly a month into the New Year. As a personal trainer, I have to ask, how are those resolutions going? After ten years in the business, I think I have a pretty good idea.

Resolutions do not work. Period. End of Story.

The word “year” kills any and all hope to succeed. We set resolutions for an entire 12 months. If it’s an entire year, it has to be a big goal. We need to accomplish a lot in that extended period of time. The goal can completely overwhelm you by springtime.

This year I do not want you to create resolutions. I want CONFIDENCE! Ed Mylett, host of a popular podcast, said, “Confidence is the process of keeping promises to yourself”.

Ever tried to create confidence for a full year? It’s called a New Year’s Resolution. So here’s the million-dollar question I get every December & January, “What can I do differently?”.

Start small. Do not aim for 12 months. The secret to any and all success… fitness, career, family…. can be found in your daily routine. Aim for one day at a time

Here are 4 of my favorite, yet simple, promises to keep each day:

1) Water

The amount of people who look past this simple daily task that has a ton of weight loss and wellness benefits amazes me. Water helps dissolve minerals and nutrients, making them more accessible to the body. It also helps remove waste products. Water is essential for the kidneys to function. If the kidneys do not function properly, waste products and excess fluid can build up inside the body.

Water drinking tips:

• Aim for 64-88oz of water to start

• Go out and buy a 20-28oz water bottle to keep with you

2) Elimination

At the start of the year, most Resolutions will begin with “I am giving up carbs, chocolate, and alcohol”. That is a lot to give up for an extended period of time. Instead of coming out guns blazing, try to eliminate a poor nutrition choice you do daily. You should treat yourself occasionally, not every single day.

Some daily elimination ideas:

• Coffee creamer and/or Starbucks etc.

• Wine or alcohol

• Handful of M&Ms or other sweets

• Eating out

3) Move

You do not, I repeat, you do not need to run out and attempt to kill yourself on the treadmill for an hour every day.

The risk of injury and lack of sustainability increases. I encourage people new to the exercise game to aim for 4-5 small daily exercises that can be done at the foot of your bed.

Sample Exercises:

• Wall Sit

• Push-Up

• Bicycle

• Plank

• Bridge

Try 1 minute per exercise and repeat 3-4 times.

4) Vegetables

We heard it all the time as kids, “Eat your vegetables”. Most adults fail to get at least 1 serving of vegetables in a day. Please do not underestimate the benefits of simply adding these to your diet.

Top 3 vegetables you should be eating:

• Spinach

• Asparagus

• Sweet Potato

The predecessor to Black History Month was created in 1926 in the United States by Carter G. Woodson and the Association for the Study of Negro Life and History. It was a week-long observance during the second week of February. It was called “Negro History Week”. At the time of the week's launch, Woodson stated that the teaching of Black History was essential to ensure the physical and intellectual survival of the race.

This week was originally chosen because it was close to the birthday of Abraham Lincoln on February 12th and that of Frederick Douglass on February 14th.

“Negro History Week” grew in popularity throughout the following decades, with mayors across the United States encouraging others to celebrate it as a holiday.

So how did the Black History Month that we know today come to be? Black History Month was first proposed by Black educators and the Black United Students at Kent State University in February 1969. This proposal led to the first celebration of Black History Month at Kent State a year later, from January 2 to February 28, 1970.

Six years later, Black History Month was being celebrated all across the country at institutions big and small. This then led to President Gerald Ford recognizing Black History Month in 1976.

He urged Americans to “seize the opportunity to honor the too-often neglected accomplishments of Black Americans in every area of endeavor throughout our history”. When it was first created, Black History Month resulted in some controversy. Some questioned whether it was appropriate to confine the celebration of Black history to one month, as opposed to the integration of Black history into mainstream education for the whole of the year.

Today, Black History Month is widely celebrated and loved. In February 2020 Forbes noted that “much of corporate America is commemorating” Black History Month including The Coca-Cola Company, Google, Target Corporation, Macy's, United Parcel Service, and Under Armour.

Take Your Child to the Library Day falls in February, and there is no better way to celebrate than to load your children up with a ton of fun books to enjoy all month long. If you are unsure of what to buy them, here are a few suggestions to start that book list off strong.

The Monkey Who Saved the Zoo

“Meet Chip, the lovable monkey who keeps the zoo safe from any animals who try to escape. With his quick thinking and reflexes, Chip is always on the lookout for trouble and is ready to act at a moment's notice. Whether he’s chasing down escaped tigers or calming down disgruntled elephants, Chip is the hero the zoo needs to maintain order and prevent chaos. Find out how this monkey stops the Grumpy Pirate Penguin!”

Wanted: A Brave Knight

“Sammy sees a posted sign that reads ‘Wanted: A Knight.’ This little bird is excited for the opportunity to be a knight but will he have what it takes? Is Sammy brave enough? Read the book to find out!”

Dog Man: Twenty Thousand Fleas Under the Sea

“Piggy is back, and his newest plot is his most diabolical yet. Dog Man and the rest of your favorite characters must join together in this heroic and hilarious, all new adventure. What new villains are on the horizon? Where are they all coming from? And who will step forward to save the city when scoundrels sabotage our Supa Buddies?”

Construction Site: You’re Just Right

Taylor Swift: A Little Golden Book Biography

“Help your little one dream big with a Little Golden Book biography about Taylor Swift, the Grammy Award–winning and multiplatinum artist. Little Golden Book biographies are the perfect introduction to nonfiction for preschoolers!”

Seeing him again brings back a flood of memories both happy and sad of her life before the circus, and she recounts the time she spent in the African savannah to Ivan and Bob.”

Moon Rising

“Peace has come to Pyrrhia... for now. The war between the tribes is finally over, and now the dragonets of the prophecy have a plan for lasting peace: Jade Mountain Academy, a school that will gather dragonets from all the tribes and teach them to live together, perhaps even as friends.”

When a member of your family joins the military, you must prepare for multiple moves in the near future. For many soldiers, their first move comes only a few short months after they join the service. On average, a military family packs up and moves every few years. Packing and unpacking constantly can become very overwhelming for many individuals. After a few moves though, many households become relocation pros and develop a few tips and tricks. We are here to share those with you today. Having a few helpful hacks up your sleeve can turn your impending PCS into a breeze. Which ones do you plan on trying out?

Storing Important Documents

Purchasing an accordion folder that you can label each individual tab can be a storage game-changer. Having folders that are categorized by Birth Certificates, Social Security Cards, Marriage Certificates, Tax Papers, Moving Documents and more can really keep these important papers close and organized.

Stock Up on Ziplock Bags

Ziplock bags are incredibly handy in a move. They are a great way to group together things like jewelry, cosmetic products, and dry foods. When everything is properly kept together and stored, it makes the unpacking process so much easier. Also remember, if you take something apart, tape the Ziplock bag that holds all the pieces to the bulk of the furniture so you don’t lose them.

Plan Meals Around Your Perishable Foods

Having to throw away your entire freezer and fridge before a move can be painful. Groceries are expensive, so it can feel as if you’re literally throwing away money. That is why it is such a great idea to plan out meals two weeks before your big move that eats up a majority of these foods.

Closet Hack

Having to take all of your clothes off the hangers to pack them up can seem daunting. Not only does it take forever, but your clothes get all wrinkled in the boxes. Instead, secure your clothes inside a trash bag while they are still on the hanger. Use a rubber band to tie together the hanger’s hooks to keep them from separating. Once you get to your new location, simply remove the bags and the bands and hang back up your clothes.

Colored Tape

Dedicate each room of your house to a certain tape color. Only use that one color to tape up the boxes for that single room. Doing this will help make unpacking all of your boxes a breeze, because they will all be color coordinated for you.

Alternate Oven Mitt Uses

Packing your sharp objects like your knives and scissors can get a little tricky. If they are not stored correctly, they can easily become a moving hazard. A simple hack to this problem is to store your sharp objects into your oven mitts. Just be sure you remember they are in there when it comes time to unpack.

Prevent Tangled Cords

Did you know that you can reuse old toilet paper and paper towel holders in your move? Just wrap your computer, TV, printer, and phone cords up with them to help prevent tangles. Who wants to spend their first night in their new home battling tangled electrical cords?
