A Time to Give and a Time to Celebrate

With autumn in full swing, the holiday season is just around the corner. Before some of the major holidays occur and procrastination creeps in, it is important to know about some of the wonderful winter activities and opportunities that Fort Knox provides and opens up to the Military Community. The holidays tend to be a true test to some of our Families’ ability to maintain resiliency due to financial problems, marital issues due to stress, and the reintegration process of Families after redeployment. These issues, which are often amplified during these months, give testament to how it is an important “time to give.”

With Thanksgiving being the first major holiday during the fall months, Fort Knox will support the Thanksgiving Operation Helping Hand (OHH) Holiday Food Program. Through this initiative, the Garrison Command Sergeant Major’s Office will provide vouchers valued at $50 each, which can be redeemed for a turkey, or alternate meat, and perishable items that cannot be provided by the Red Cross. The vouchers can be redeemed at the Fort Knox Commissary through November 24. Soldiers and Family members who are in need of additional food assistance during the holiday season are eligible regardless of their current deployment status.

In addition to supporting OHH, the Red Cross supports the Lending Closet which provides basic goods such as blow up mattresses, tables, chairs and lamps to those who may be waiting on household goods to arrive, or just need assistance for a short period of time.

Another effort that the Red Cross supports is Santa’s Workshop which provides toys to Families who are financially challenged during the holiday season. Santa’s Workshop offers an opportunity for Families to visit the workshop and, with the assistance of their elves, scan the vast inventory for the perfect toy for their child.

If you are interested in making a difference and volunteering with one of these special programs, please visit the American Red Cross Fort Knox Service Center at 1131 Fifth Avenue and fill out an application, or call (502) 624-2163. An example of some of the volunteer opportunities include helping to bag food, handing out the food packages, serving as an elf to help parents shop for toys, and gift wrapping.

Another way to participate in the holiday season is through the 2014 Fort Knox Holiday Card Decoration Contest.

Instructions on how to submit an entry into the contest were released in an October operations order published by DPTMS to all Units/Directorates and civilian agencies. The contest recognizes and hails the Units, Directorates, commercial agencies or school/children related agencies who design the best Holiday Card entry in the contest. Winners of each category within the contest are announced on December 4, in conjunction with the annual Christmas Tree Lighting Ceremony at the Installation Gazebo, located across from Brooks Field. After the tree lighting ceremony, Christmas trees are donated to Soldiers on a first-come, first-served basis in the parking lot across from the Gazebo.

The holiday season seems to pass by us just as quickly as it approaches. As the countdowns begin and end, try to step back and focus your energy on the gesture of giving, instead of just the gift itself. When you focus on showing people how they have made your

world a little better, the gift becomes more reflective of your relationship and less about the price tag. Tell people how you value them, how grateful you are and how much you’re looking forward to growing with them in the future. That is a great gift in itself.

Last but not least, use the holiday season as a countdown to getting prepared both physically and mentally for the New Year. So rather than wear yourself out, focus on what you can do either individually or collectively in order to maximize this time of year so you can start strong in 2015. Whatever type of activity you may choose to associate yourself with, make sure you motivate yourself into doing what makes you happy.

Military OneSource One Stop Assistance

Available around the clock and around the world, Military OneSource is there to give assistance to Service Members and their Families.

Provided by the Department of Defense (DoD), this no-fee program benefits Active Duty Soldiers in the Army, Navy, Marine Corp, and Air Force, as well as their immediate Family Members. National Guard and Reserve Members are also eligible regardless of activation status. No matter where or when a situation arises, a Service or Military Family Member can make a phone call or access the Military OneSource website to get help for almost any of life’s issues.

Health and wellness coaching is another valuable resource available at no cost through the program. Simply call the toll-free number to schedule a session. Coaching possibilities include: weight management, fitness, nutrition, health condition management as well as stress management and life transitions. Support is provided by the coach to help participants create an action plan in order to achieve their goals.

Huck noted programs here in Kentucky that she recommends and are resources for Military OneSource. “Operation Military Kids organizes and supports the Ready, Set, Go! Program to introduce members of the Community to the Military way of life. They also compete for grants to have camps for kids and their Military parents.” In support of Yellow Ribbon events, she mentioned the Epilepsy Foundation in Kentucky. Here on Fort Knox, Huck works with the Exceptional Family Member Program (EFMP) – managed by Army Community Service (ACS). “This is for anyone who has special needs from serious physical and mental health issues to much simpler things like allergies.”

Kentucky Military OneSource Consultant, Kathleen Huck covers the entire state. She works with various organizations and gives briefings that focus on the variety of resources available through Military OneSource. Huck has been all over the globe herself as a Military Spouse and knows the value of her organization from first-hand experience. “I love what I do because it keeps me in touch with Military Families and they are the salt of the earth!” she proudly proclaims.

James Rodriguez, Deputy Assistant of Defense, shared an example of how Military OneSource was able to assist a pregnant Military Spouse whose husband had just deployed. In a difficult predicament after her money, credit cards, and ID had been stolen from her car while she was traveling home, she remembered being told in a pre-deployment briefing that Military OneSource would be there if she ever needed support. The consultant she reached helped her get free overnight lodging, a new Military ID card, cancel her credit cards and even located a branch of her bank so she could get some cash to continue her journey. They also enabled her to notify her deployed husband through the American Red Cross. As Rodriguez says, “All it took was a call.”

From her first-hand experience, Huck knows how difficult it can be for Military Spouses who have professions which require a license or certification. Due to frequent moves, pursuing almost any career can be a real challenge. Available through Military OneSource are links and access to the Spouse Education and Career Opportunities (SECO) career center. SECO career counselors offer extensive counseling services at no charge to those eligible. Here Military Spouses receive direct access to companies that are interested in actively recruiting them. Everything in Moderation – Enjoying the Thanksgiving Feast Without Overindulging

Food and Family always seem to go together, especially during the holidays. Getting together for quality time can seem to increase the chances of overindulgence in all of the popular holiday dishes.

However, it is possible to enjoy the food throughout the holidays without overeating.

Eat before you eat. That might sound a little contradictory, but it’s the same concept of not going grocery shopping on an empty stomach.

We’ve all made that mistake before. You go to the grocery store hungry and you end up coming home with more (and often less healthy) food than usual. If you arrive hungry to a holiday dinner, the chances are you’ll be tempted to overindulge on high-calorie items.

Try snacking on some protein, like nuts or yogurt beforehand, which will satisfy your hunger a bit and lessen the chance of eating more than you would have liked.

If you’re the one hosting the meal or party, try to find healthy alternatives to the traditional high-calorie recipes. There are many substitute ingredients that can still give you a flavorful dish but make it a little healthier. For example, mashed potatoes tend to be loaded with cream and butter. But they can be just as tasty when you use

chicken broth, garlic and flavorful spices instead. If you’re not the one choosing the ingredients and preparing the meals, then portion control is one way to curb the tendency to stuff yourself like a turkey.

Portion control allows you to enjoy some of the more decadent dishes and desserts that aren’t always low-calorie or low-fat. Instead of loading up your plate with generous helpings, serve yourself smaller helpings and by doing so you also have an opportunity to try more dishes. Also, lingering at the food table is one way that overeating can occur without you even realizing. Try to grab one or two foods and then take time to mingle and enjoy the company, instead of being tempted to graze at the table.

While the holidays are always a prime time to concentrate on eating well, improving your health and wellness are important all year long.

The Department of Defense recognizes and promotes this initiative through its Operation Live Well campaign. Small, daily lifestyle changes can make a big difference in your health in the long run.

Butternut Squash/Lentil Soup This is easy to make, and healthy soup is a meal in itself!

Ingredients: 1 Tbsp. olive oil 1 diced medium onion 2 Tbsps. Curry powder 1 small butternut squash, peeled, seeds removed, and cut in small cubes I small cauliflower, cut in small pieces 8 oz. can brown lentils, rinsed and drained 1 - 28 oz. can chopped tomatoes 8 Tbsps. Greek yogurt Salt and pepper to taste How to make it: 1. Heat the olive oil in a heavy sauce pan 2. Add the onion and sauté until soft – about 5 minutes 3. Add the curry powder and sauté for about 30 seconds until fragrant 4. Add the squash, cauliflower and lentils and sauté all ingredients for about 5 minutes 5. Add the canned tomatoes and add 16 oz. of water 6. Add salt and pepper and simmer for about 30 minutes 7. You can add the yogurt to soup and serve, or serve the soup and add a Tbsp. of yogurt on top Nutritional information per serving: Calories (Kcal): 420; Carbohydrates (g): 67; Fat (g): 4; Protein (g): 20; Sodium (mg): 65; Sugar (g): 8
