Maybe it’s the come-snuggle-with-me softness of all of those knits. Or candlelit dinner parties with glowing cocktails of amber spirits that fill the entertaining season. And those smells: from walkingin-the-wood scents to irresistible kitchen aromas, not to mention the soul-satisfying perfume of a beautiful hearth.

For me, these months are about celebrating the hedonist within. Think scented candles and oils meant to accompany a long warm bath.

Question: What holiday scents do you love most?

Liv Judd Soye: During the holidays, I like my home to smell inviting and outdoorsy, cozy and nostalgic, either like a freshly cut pine tree or a burning fireplace. I’m head-over-heels in love with Nest fragrances, and their holiday trio of candles is beautiful— exactly what the holiday should smell like. I plan 8

Judd Soye: Guerlain My Insolence. I can’t remember who I received it from, but my 4-year-old daughter, Malin, has stolen it and claimed it for her own.

She has been obsessed with it since before she was 2 and will only wear that fragrance.

When she was younger, she would line up all my fragrances, smell each one carefully

Question: When you were talking about the original La Petite Robe Noire, you talked about blackness; what appeals to you about blackness and darkness in perfume?

Thierry Wasser: The colour is black, but the texture is light. It gives a sensation of air and breath that balances the blackness. To me, La Petite Robe Noire does literally mean ‘little black dress’—the black is in the name. But, it’s always a translation because, what does black smell like? Everyone might have a different take on [that]. I don’t want to say I was lazy—maybe laid-back—but it was kind of easy using black tea, licorice, etc. It’s not because those scents or those materials are allegedly black to me or that they are dark and heavy. The black cherry is rather lifted as a scent, the tea is very

dynamic—it’s like you use the black tea like a wood.

Q: Because it’s dry?

Wasser: Exactly.

The patchouli is the darkness, this sense of drama, mystery. Licorice is rather yummy, so it goes into the trend of gourmands.

So it’s not because it’s called black, but it has that black attitude. This is the accord—so-called black—but the texture was really important to me for the dress; it was not to accentuate the dark side of the fragrance. That’s why instead of using very

textural florals, I used light florals. So you have a black dress that is light in texture.

When you have all those white flowers and that Bulgarian rose and orange flower, which lifts and gives the momentum, and the dynamic between the black notes and the freshness of the texture, there is a movement.

Q: There’s sandalwood in the new Intense perfume that is a key component…

Wasser: Not only. There are two stars: Patchouli and Sandalwood. Once again, I love my movement—it creates a dynamic.

Q: I do believe, as things go in cycles, that we are moving back to darker scents. Do you agree?

Wasser: I would be tempted to disagree with that.

Q: Five years ago, you would have been hardpressed to find an oriental

peach, it’s something that is engaged and graceful and I wouldn’t call it dark. I wish I had been the one who invented it.

Fragrances for me are about happiness, pleasure and like a second skin or something that you want to promote yourself with—how you present yourself to your entourage. So to me, dark is not something that would be suitable for fragrance; maybe I’m not gothic enough.

Wasser: If dark in your perspective is complex— chypre, for example, the association of oak moss, patchouli and this mousy, earthy ingredient, can be hard to understand. But I think people are more educated today and they are more aware of fragrance composition and maybe that’s why such fragrances may be more in favour today because people are ready to accept more sophisticated types of fragrances. But is it dark, really?

Mitsouko for me is my favourite fragrance in the whole Guerlain catalogue and it’s not dark to me.
