Women In Tourism & Hospitality (WITH) Program History

In 2023 WITH was pleased and excited to announce that the Internal Revenue Service determined WITH to be a 501( c)(3) tax-exempt organization as of November 2020. This nonprofit status increased WITH’s capacity to operate its programs to BUILD, CONNECT, LEARN, AND IMPACT youth, women, our industry, our communities, and our world!

In 2023 MCCSN did something never done before. We boldly took our industry mixers on the road and inaugurated “WITH Coastal Connections” networking events for women in tourism and hospitality. We aimed to help raise the profile by marketing and promoting MCCSN and bring awareness to our national WITH conference and US women coast to coast. We designed these first ever “Coastal Connections” to increase the capacity, and build a stronger global network of like-minded women, who are supportive of sharing resources to help elevate and mentor other women in the industry to succeed in their careers. This “Coastal Connections” concept is already highly successful. Our events are already yielding partnerships, resources, and funds that significantly help elevate women AND the WITH brand. They improve the capacity of the WITH Conference to promote diversity, equity, and inclusion, and to expand WITH programs, impact and influence.

In September 2023 we held our very first “Coastal Connections” Networking Mixer, sponsored by Omni Houston in Houston, Texas. We appreciated the opportunity to export our networking model, mentor Houston’s women, and smoothly implement our new concept. We all had an amazing time mixing and mingling with Houston’s top c-suite women from various industry organizations to include, MPI, NACE, Houston Airport, Houston Convention and Visitor’s Bureau and local entrepreneurs from surrounding communities.

In November 2023 we held our 2nd “Costal Connections” Networking Mixer, sponsored by the Hilton Atlanta Airport. We met more phenomenal women and created the amazing connections that led the East Point Convention and Visitors Bureau (CVB) to become the presenting sponsor of our 2024 WITH conference!

We look forward to creating our next “Coastal Connections in Chicago, Illinois, and Washington, DC. We can’t wait to see where and how these roads and connections will inspire and lead women and the WITH organization into the future. We look forward to WITH being in a city near you soon!

Clara Carter, President and CEO of MCCSN, founded the WITH Program in 2015 to fulfill her dream to recognize and encourage the contributions of women professionals at all stages of their careers. Her work began with a local focus on the women in tourism and hospitality in the San Diego metro-area. In five short years WITH has grown and become the premier program significantly impacting the tourism and hospitality industry. It now embraces the recognition, collaboration, diversity, inclusion, elevation and community of women nationwide.

Women In Tourism & Hospitality (WITH) Program History

The WITH Awards Luncheon and celebration was the original WITH program emphasis. Clara Carter says ”We believed that celebrating well known, respected, influential, and unsung women at the pinnacle of their careers would also inspire tomorrow’s leaders. We were right! Guests at the luncheon include tourism executives, industry insiders, new professionals, entrepreneurs, and students. They have coined the term “WITH IT!” to express their delight in the concept of the award, the sisterhood embodied within it, and the event itself.” Thanks to WITH supporters, industry sponsors, and donors, WITH has grown by 25% every year since 2015 and now includes a Silent Auction to raise funds for the WITH Scholarship.

The WITH Networking Mixers was added in 2017 as a networking opportunity for industry career professionals to connect in a relaxed and professional atmosphere. Guests at the mixers include WITH Honorees, key industry executives, business owners, industry suppliers, meeting and event planners, industry colleagues, community leaders, and entrepreneurs. Everyone at all levels has expressed appreciation for this opportunity to mix business with pleasure and enjoy the entertainment, hearty appetizers and opportunity gifts. and more.

The WITH Advisory Board, WITH Good Guy and WITH UNITY were created in 2019, in response to requests from honorees, supporters and attendees to have greater involvement in what had become “the WITH movement”. Our mission: WITH supports, empowers and strengthens diversity and inclusion for women in the hospitality industry and provides education, leadership strategies, mentorship and networking opportunities in a forward-thinking environment.

W.I.T.H. UNITY was created to foster the idea of bringing women together in community. It helps support our mission and increase our capacity to lead, collaborate and create positive change. It is THE way members can access the WITH executive network, connect to peers, learn new industry trends, market ourselves and our brands globally, talk creatively about the future of our industry, and have FUN.

Women In Tourism & Hospitality (WITH) Program History

The WITH Advisory Board was created to be the “Guiding Light” for Clara’s vision. The Board is comprised of past honorees and industry executives selected because of their amazing work in the industry, their superb experience, their excellent reputation, their perceptive insight into industry trends, and their ongoing support of the WITH program. Through their membership on the Advisory Board, these women and men continue to shape the inclusiveness of our industry by supporting today’s women leaders, helping to guide and prepare leaders of the future and helping to achieve WITH’s Clara’s vision of expanding this program to include a “WITH Conference”. WITH MEN was created to reflect the organization’s Clara’s commitment to inclusion and diversity. It is the Male/Female Executive Nexus (MEN) linking and connecting the women and the men thought leaders who support women in the workplace.

Annual W.I.T.H. Conference is the next step towards our ultimate vision of a beautiful world where women collaborate with each other, companies, educational institutions, governments, corporations, and non- governmental organizations to strengthen diversity and inclusion, and financial capacity. Thanks to the enthusiastic response and interest from around the globe, the program is well on its way to realizing that vision. Join us, follow us and work with us as we make history and become WITH INTERNATIONAL. As Clara says, “ The future belongs to those who dream and work”. Let’s Get WITH it! Building Capacity for Women Together.

WITH's LEADERSHIP & RESILIENCE

OUR HISTORY

WITH was founded by Clara Carter in 2015. During her more than 22 years in both the corporate world and as an entrepreneur, President and Founder of the Multi-Cultural Convention Services Network (MCCSN), Clara observed and learned a universal truth about business: it wasn’t only about what you knew, it was also about who you knew and who you were perceived to be.

Success for women was usually tied to their ability to put on the lens of the male dominated leadership and see and do things their way. Clara knew this “truth” was accepted by and detrimental to the entire tourism and hospitality industry - its women, its men, and its clients.

Clara determined to campaign for “a way for women to be and be seen as we are – as our authentic valuable selves”. Her campaign to bring about political or social change led her to create Women in Tourism and Hospitality (WITH International). WITH’s original mission was to acknowledge C-suite trailblazing women for their work in the hospitality and tourism industry.

After 4 years Clara of positive reception and feedback, and the encouragement of industry leaders, women and men who committed to become part of the WITH Advisory Board, Clara formed Women in Tourism and Hospitality, International (W.I.T.H. Int’l.), a California Corporation. The WITH mission is to support, empower, and strengthen diversity and inclusion for women in the hospitality industry and to provide education, leadership strategies, mentorship, and networking opportunities in a forward-thinking environment. WITH aims to provide strategies to achieve both professional growth and prosperity for women and to achieve diversity, equity, and inclusion within the industry.

In 2019, with the help of the WITH Advisory Board and its supporters, Clara took a bold leap of faith and launched and produced MCCSN’s first annual WITH Conference. Because of the restrictions and devastating impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, Clara was forced to cancel the conference within one week of its debut in September 2020.

39

WITH's LEADERSHIP & RESILIENCE

OUR ACCOMPLISHMENTS

While other organizations in San Diego’s tourism industry were trying to figure out a path forward, WITH quickly pivoted that same year and in 2020 WITH expanded its on-line presence. WITH developed a series of webinars that reached, involved, and impacted the industry’s women worldwide reaching 32 states and 7 countries!

During the 20-month period of COVID-19 restrictions, WITH planned and held the WITH 2021 National Conference. It was the first successful in person conference in San Diego in 2 years and attracted over 250 industry influencers, entrepreneurs, hospitality professionals to include meeting planners and students.

AND…WITH International, Inc. became a 501(c)(3) nonprofit corporation!!! We are delighted to have achieved this formidable and impressive accomplishment. Our nonprofit status will facilitate our mission, allow our donors to make tax deductions contributions, and incentivize them to provide additional funds.

This 2022 WITH conference, produced by MCCSN, is designed for you – all the Women in our industry at every level who are its present and its future. The conference environment will ensure everyone has the opportunity to participate in all sessions. Our presenters and honorees will inspire you, our interactive discussions will inform and motivate you, our interactive topics will equip and empower you and our reception will entertain you!

40
