The Journey Begins

Naarm Exploration Exploring Naarm through the lens of an International student from Indonesia.

Studio 4 focuses more on observational practice.

We were taught on how to observe, analyze, and pay more attention to our surroundings and how do we decolonize our observation and set apart between our biases and facts.

In this studio, we were divided into groups of five to explore different parts of Naarm. We had to observe and take notes of what we see along our exploration.We also went to National Gallery Victoria, where we learn more about the First Nations People’s history, Sticky’s Institute that sells zines and was introduced to the Zine culture in Naarm and we went to Hosier Lane where we see a lot of beautiful graffities.

A workshop that encourages us on how to express ourselves through collage making that represents our dreams and desires

We had a few workshops that delves into Image making, typography, and riso printing which helped us in our Zine making journey and we had a second exploration where we tour different parts of Naarm with local students.

I very much enjoy this segment of the workshop because I get to be a bit vulnerable with myself and express what I truly think and feel about my dreams and my future

A Fresh Perspective A highlight on some of the important insights that I have gained through this study tour.

Through this studio, I’ve gained valuable insights.

Firstly, I discovered the significance of diverse perspectives. Exploring Naarm with local students and visiting Williamstown for a food immersion gave me a few perspectives.

Walking through South Yarra, local students shared unique facts, offering me distinct insights into how tourists perceive Naarm compared to locals.

It was a beautiful sunny day when we went to Williamstown and we were greeted with a special performance by Rusty.

It was truly a wonderful experience being able to visit Williamstown and seeing the different life of the locals.

It was very peaceful and calm which is very different from the bustling city life I have in Singapore.

We spend the rest of the trip strolling around the beach and enjoying the beautiful scenery at Williamstown.

We learned how to bake Flat bread topped with saltbush and wattle seeds. It was delicious!

The food immersion in Williamstown provided a new perspective on local lives in Naarm, helping me understand how people’s habits and lifestyles influence their thoughts and actions.

This experience was particularly fascinating, as it shed light on the connections between people’s daily lives and their worldview.

The murals at Hosier Lane was very captivating.

Almost all of us took pictures as a momento.

Art Scene The art scene in Naarm has had me in awestruck since I came to visit.

Another insight concerns Naarm’s vibrant art and culture scene. While exploring the city, I encountered beautiful graffiti adorning various spaces.

A visit to the National Gallery Victoria deepened my understanding of the rich history, culture, and art of the First Nations People.

Exploring Sticky’s Institute, where self-published zines are sold, further emphasize the deep roots of art in their heritage. Naarm actively supports and cultivates its art culture, contributing to a flourishing scene. This experience highlighted the significance of preserving and evolving culture, for future generations to understand and enjoy. It emphasized the crucial role of art in connecting past, present, and future.

Our zine called ‘Rewinding the Clock’ takes us back to look at Naarm’s history.

The more information that we gained, the wider our knowledge would be, and we would be able to create a meaningful piece that carries depth and significance.

Turns out, the process is not just about the aesthetics, it’s about soaking in as much as you can from every corner and turning it into something uniquely yours.

Zine Journey The process of making this zine is part of the journey on its own. It records our views, impressions, and experience with Naarm

The printing process for our zine using the risograph printer. I’m very excited when we get to do risograph because I have been interested in riso printing for quite some time.

Lastly, I gained a deeper insight on the process of art making. Through the zine-making experience, I learned that we always need to be curious, especially during the observation part.

If it’s possible, it’s also good to gain more insight from locals or experts.

It’s Just the Beginning My journey in Naarm has reignite my passion as a designer and has given me a new mission.

My journey in Naarm has given me a lot of new insights on how I see the world and what I can do to make it better as a designer. I realized that there is still a lot of instances where I see through a biased view but from here on I will be more open minded and observant of my surroundings and see more than what meets the eye.

Naarm’s art scene has also given me a new inspiration of what I can bring back to my home country.

My journey in Naarm may come to an end but my journey as a designer has just started.

I came from Indonesia, a country with diverse culture in every nook and cranny and a lot of potential in their arts and culture, but alas, the art scene in Indonesia is not thoroughly developed. Through this studio, I have gained a new goal that is to revive, develop, and evolve Indonesia’s art scene starting from my town.
