The Foodbank plays a vital role in supporting local individuals and families facing financial hardship or difficult circumstances. But for many, turning to a foodbank can be a challenging and overwhelming experience Thorne and Moorends Foodbank was founded by Michael and Glenys Hennessy. Following Michael’s sad passing a few years ago, the foodbank has faced some uncertain times, but the commitment and hard work of its volunteers have ensured its vital work continues. Thorne and Moorends Foodbank and Community Hub welcomes visitors with free tea and toast, helping them feel at ease. Alongside food support, they can connect people with partner agencies for further assistance. Today, the day-to-day running of the foodbank is led by Kerry Lee, Steve Parkes and James Madley, supported by a dedicated team of volunteers who generously give their time to help others in need.
Foodbanks play a vital role in supporting vulnerable individuals and families, offering emergency food relief while strengthening community ties, reducing food waste, and increasing awareness of poverty and hunger. Reliable access to meals is vital for health and wellbeing. By providing nutritious food, foodbanks help reduce hunger-related health risks and prevent malnutrition, especially among children and older adults. Thorne and Moorends Foodback has been selected as a finalist for the Choose Kindness Community Group, highlighting the dedication and commitment of everyone involved. Discover Theatre Squad UK’s impact in Doncaster Theatre Squad is about much more than dance and performance - it provides adults in Doncaster with a welcoming, inclusive and safe space where they can meet new people, build friendships and feel part of a community Theatre Squad UK was founded in Doncaster just over three years ago by Nathan Kennedy with a simple aim: to give adults a welcoming place to dance, meet people and feel part of something. Since then, it has evolved into a wide-ranging social and creative community that is changing how community is seen and experienced in modern life. Dance classes - every Tuesday Beginner open style - 6.30pm to 7.30pm For anyone 18+ who loves to dance! Whether new, returning, or just wanting to have fun, this class is for you. Improvers/intermediate level up 7.45pm - 9pm Ready to level up? Perfect for those who know the basics and want to improve. Page 8
Robyn Priestnall, event organiser at Theatre Squad UK, told Thorne Local: “Being able to help create opportunities for other members to come together, make memories and enjoy new experiences is something I am incredibly proud to be part of. Some events which I help to organise are picnics, celebration nights out, musical trips as well as helping to organise our Glitz and Glam Ball. “I joined the group just over three years ago when it was only just starting out. I remember going to my first class on my own, not really knowing what to expect, but I’ve been hooked ever since.”

A memorable Bonfire Night awaits at Fishlake Cricket & Bowls Club Keep your diary free for a night of fun and warmth on Saturday 7th November from 5.30pm together. We want the club to be somewhere for everyone, not just those who play cricket or bowls. It’s about creating affordable, family-friendly events where people can get together, enjoy themselves and support a local community club at the same time. “We learn from each event and introduce new ideas, while still keeping that friendly village atmosphere that makes it special. Seeing more families and people from outside the club coming along each year makes all the hard work worthwhile. Fishlake Cricket and Bowls Club is a volunteer-run community club based in the heart of Fishlake. The club features junior and senior cricket teams, a bowls section, and a lively clubhouse with a bar and kitchen. Following the devastating floods in 2019, the club was rebuilt with incredible support from their members and the local community. Jade Meehan, Bar, Social Media and Sponsorship Manager at Fishlake Cricket and Bowls Club told Thorne Local: “ Events like this are really important because they bring the whole village and surrounding community Page 10
“The club is run by volunteers who give up a huge amount of their own time to keep it going and the support they continue to receive from the village, members, sponsors and visitors means so much. “Every drink bought, events attended and thr support helps us continue improving the club for future generations.” Sunday 7th November Bonfire Night Fishlake Cricket & Bowls Club Pinfold Lane, Fishlake, DN7 5LB Adults £5, 5-16 years £2, Under-fives free
