Hello and welcome to your October/ November edition of Tadcaster Echo.

For many people this is their favourite time of the year, spooky season is just around the corner, and before you know it, it will be Christmas. Autumn brings cosy nights on the sofa, slow-cooker meals and, of course, the return of our dressing gowns and fluffy socks.

Here at Tadcaster Echo, we love the winter months as there is nothing better than a nice warm, hearty meal full of seasonal vegetables.

In this edition, we celebrate two local groups in our community, the team behind the Boston Spa Christmas Fair and the Tadcrafters and the brilliant work they do for the Leeds Breast Unit at St James’s Hospital, Leeds.

Boston Spa’s Christmas Fair back and better this year thanks to

Boston Spa Village Hall has just undergone a £126k refurb project thanks to funding from FCC Communities Foundation, The George A Moore Foundation and Wetherby Ward Councillors

The village would love to show everyone the transformed hall at the Christmas Fair on Friday 2nd December from 4pm to 8pm.

The FCC Communities Foundation is a notfor-profit business that awards grants for community projects from landfill. Since 1998, FCC Communities Foundation has granted over £200million to more than 7,000 projects which benefit people living within 10 miles of an FCC Environment landfill site.

The main hall has hosted several events, concerts and festivals. It has a capacity of 360 people standing or 160 seating with a further 20 on the stage. It measures 9m by 16.1m.

This year the Christmas Fair has over 30 stalls selling food, drink, gifts and art. It’s the perfect event for the whole family to hunt for Christmas presents before the big day. Santa and his elves will be in Santa’s living room to meet children and ask what they want for Christmas.

The cafe will also be open serving prosecco, mulled wine, hot chocolate etc. Entry into the fair, including meeting Santa, is free. To get everyone well and truly in the Christmas spirit there will also be some carol singers and everyone singing favourite Christmas classics.

Tadcaster Echo had a chat with Wendy Cochran to find out more about the Fair and what people can expect.

Wendy told us: “The trustees of Boston Spa

Village hall have just completed an extensive renovation of the main hall thanks to £120k of funding from FCC Communities Foundation, The George A Moore Foundation and Wetherby Ward Councilors. This funding, plus some of our own reserves, has enabled us to insulate the hall, replace the windows, rewire and redecorate. The result is a much brighter and warmer venue.

“We are excited to show off our newly renovated hall at our Christmas Fair on 2nd December. Children can meet Santa, tell him what they want for Christmas and even drop off their wish lists. We will be open from 4pm to 8pm on the day. Running an event of this size takes a lot of work. We are all volunteers, many of us work fulltime, who give up our time to run the hall. But seeing it newly renovated and being enjoyed by the community makes all the hard work worth it.”

Local group donates cushions to help patients at Leeds Breast unit

The Leeds Breast unit is a dedicated Breast and Endocrine surgical unit. They have been open for over 26 years, originally based at Leeds General Infirmary, but it moved to St James’s around eight years ago.

Tadcrafters have created some heart cushions and drain bags for the patients at the unit to help not only give them comfort but also as a gift and special keepsake.

Tadcrafters is a not-for-profit Community Interest Company dedicated to helping people to make their community stronger by helping volunteers work on projects together, and creating items that are donated to worthy causes from surplus materials. The items the group makes are mainly

made from recycled donations of fabric, yarn, haberdashery and wood which are donated by local people and businesses.

Tadcaster Echo had a chat with Bev Wood, who works at the unit to find out more the impact the donation really has.

Bev said: “A lot of our patients have surgery to their Axilla (under the arm) to the breast which can result in removal. The Tadcrafters have been helping us with heart cushions and drain bags for a long time.

These are so very important in the comfort of the patients, it helps with pain and also focus for the patients. We have had fabulous feedback from

Tadcrafters, a local group, have created heart-shaped cushions, and drain bags,  which provide practical support for patients who have had breast surgery

our patients and these cushions are really well received.

The Tadcrafters supply not just our unit but have grateful clients/groups receiving many other products they make with love.”

Sally, one of the recipients of the gifts, said: “I have just had breast surgery at St James’s Hospital Leeds and I want to say a great big thank you for your gifts. Practically so helpful, but I was most touched by the thought and love that went into making them.”
