Laser warfare at Stockeld Park Stockeld Park’s latest attraction is set in acres of customised woodland and offers families and groups of friends the chance to work as a team and compete with state-of-the-art laser tag guns The brand new attraction, Laser Adventure, which opened in May, gives up to 20 players (over the age of seven) at any one time the chance to battle their way through a variety of scenarios, including ‘Capture the Flag’, ‘Defuse the Bomb’, the ‘Money Heist’ and ‘Domination’. The guns emit a harmless infrared beam meaning the Laser Adventure has all the fun of paint balling with none of the mess or bruises.

There are obstacles to tackle such as the bomb shelter, the dugout, the pipeline plus an abandoned vehicle, so you and your team mates are going to have to perform at your best to outmanoeuvre and out-gun the opposing team.

The Laser Adventure will be open every day during school holidays up to early November, as well as Fridays-Sundays in term. It is also open separately to the other attractions of Stockeld Park, meaning you can just visit this if you wish. Each session lasts two hours, broken down into 15-minute slots, and costs £18 per person or a combined ticket with entry to the park costs £24.

Stockeld Park Estate Manager George Grant said: “The Laser Adventure is one of the boldest and most exciting new ventures that Stockeld Park

Nominate a young achiever The Yorkshire Young Achievers Awards is now in its 26th year and organisers are on the look out for nominees for this year’s awards from across the region The awards, sponsored by McCormicks Solicitors of Harrogate, mark the achievements of outstanding young people aged under 35 from across Yorkshire and are presented at a prestigious ceremony at Leeds United Centenary Pavilion on Thursday 8th November. Awards Chairman, Peter McCormick OBE, said: “Nominating someone is very simple and we are keen to hear about the successes of young people from wherever they live in Yorkshire. We know there is a tremendous amount of talent out there so please let us hear about it!” The awards are organised by the Yorkshire Young Achievers Foundation and have raised more than £1.2 million to support young people in Yorkshire, with grants made to both individuals and organisations supporting them, including sports people, those involved in the arts and disabled youngsters. Financial boost for charity shop refurbishment A charity shop that raises funds for a local nursery for children and families with additional needs has benefitted from a £2,500 grant The Peter Pan Nursery charity shop in Sherburn-in-Elmet is in the process of being refurbished to boost its fundraising for the preschool nursery for children with additional needs including disabilities, learning difficulties and behavioural issues. The nursery applied for funding from the Western Community Engagement Forum last year to help towards the costs of refurbishing the shop. Kay Smith, administrator, fundraising and shop coordinator, said: “Our charity shop has been a big part of our community for almost 15 years, offering volunteering opportunities where various skills can be learnt, offering social interaction and in turn raising funds to support Peter Pan Nursery, who offer care to children and families in our community with additional needs. “The refurbishment will give us more free ground

14

space, opening up the opportunity to engage with the community much more. Eventually we hope to open the upstairs of the shop up to local community groups, for activities such as knit and natter, craft, book clubs etc. We also want to run events to support local small businesses, such as craft stalls and craft lessons. We want to make our shop a place where people feel they can pop in for a chat.” So far one of the downstairs showrooms of the shop has been refurbished, allowing the shop to put twice as much stock out and boost takings – which all helps provide funds for the nursery. Chair of the Western CEF, Andrew Pound, commented: “This project demonstrates what’s really special about Sherburn and the surrounding area – there’s a real sense of community vibrancy as volunteers and local groups work together to make a real difference to the local area.”

10 YEARS ON AND STILL CONSISTENTLY GOOD Since starting the business 10 years ago in 2007, Business Manager, Helen Smith, and Operations Manager, Nicole Newiss, have undergone four Ofsted inspections. The latest one took place in February 2017 and again the team was awarded a GOOD in all areas. Helen Smith said “This grading from Ofsted was such positive news. During the last ten years of business we have seen our nursery grow from one building to two buildings with age-specific rooms. We used to have a registration for just 18 children and now we have over 120 children and 90 families from all surrounding areas that use us throughout the week. Even with all these

improvements and the changes in the way Ofsted carry out their inspections, we have still maintained a consistent ‘GOOD’ rating in 2008, 2011, 2013 and now 2017”. The team of 16 staff has worked very hard to create a nurturing and inspiring quality nursery which provides a lovely homely feel, whilst still challenging children through taught activities. This year many of our Year Six children who started with us as babies in our Crawlers Room will be heading off to high school to start their next adventure and it is wonderful to know that we have enthused their learning for the future.

Mel Giedroyc and Marie Curie knead your support Throw a Blooming Great Tea Party this June to support people who are terminally ill. TV presenter Mel Giedroyc and the charity Marie Curie are calling on the people of Tadcaster to throw a Blooming Great Tea Party this June. It’s easy to get involved. Pick a date in June then invite your friends, colleagues and family round for a tea party, bake sale or a “Bake Off” style competition. All you need to do is ask for donations on the day. The money you raise will help Marie Curie provide vital care and support for people living with a terminal illness and their loved ones. Faye Cryer, Community Fundraiser for Leeds and Tadcaster, said: “Throwing a Blooming Great Tea Party for Marie Curie in June is an easy way to get together with friends, family and colleagues and raise money for a great cause. You can invite the whole village round for a garden party, or spend time with a few close friends and buy

18

in your favourite treat. So whether you’re an aspiring pastry chef, or a total butterfingers, join the hundreds of people in Tadcaster who will be baking up a storm to raise money for people who are terminally ill across the whole country. We’re counting on your cuppa!” This year The Blooming Great Tea Party launch was hosted by Dulcie Butterfly Vintage Tea Rooms in Boston Spa. Dulcie the manager (pictured in the photo) said: “We were delighted for Marie Curie to have chosen our tea room to launch their Blooming Great Tea Party. We had fun and laughter at our photo shoot as you should when you hold your tea party for this great cause. We hope it will inspire others to get involved – I know we will be doing!” To find out more and receive your free fundraising pack, call 0800 716 146 or visit www.mariecurie.org.uk/teaparty.

This month, Business Support Specialist Heidi Green discusses how to protect your intellectual property

Intellectual Property and your business A successful business is built on wellmanaged intangible assets or IP. McDonald’s, Coca-Cola, Nestle, Nike and Amazon have all used their IP and have stood the test of time.

Trademarks – protects brands, could be words or logos or a combination of both and can even be a sound (think of Asda Price).

Whether it’s a trademark, copyright, design or patent, you need to consider how it fits in with your business.

Copyright – protects photographs, literature, art, films, sound recordings etc.

Devil’s Toenail to be redeveloped Wetherby Town Council has recently taken over ownership of land known as the Devil’s Toenail so that it can be redeveloped by Wetherby Bike Trails and SingletrAction as a mountain bike skills area. The site is located just off Quarry Hill Lane near the Harland Way. The project builds on the success of the ‘Little Toe’ project which was constructed last year, marking completion of one of the early phases of Wetherby Bike Trail’s ambitions. The group had always had their eye on the Devil’s Toenail as the perfect location for a more difficult route and securing tenure over the land became their next challenge. Rob and Ann Watson, who had retained the land despite moving from Wetherby many years ago, agreed that now was the right time to release ownership of the site and generously agreed to sell it to Wetherby Town Council for £1. Wetherby Town Council will be responsible for the management and maintenance of the new pump track once constructed.

38

It was the new Mayor of Wetherby’s first task to visit the site and oversee completion of the land purchase. Councillor Galan Moss said: “I’m pleased to see local firms, volunteers from community organisations and the Town Council working together to help deliver new recreation facilities for Wetherby. Cycling is now such a big part of Yorkshire life and it’s good to see the town being a part of this trend.” Although the land is going to be temporarily closed to the public, it is hoped that the new cycling facility can be quickly constructed, and the site re-opened in its new incarnation. Wetherby Bike Trails are working hard on proposals to fund the cycle track which it is hoped can be constructed and ready for use later this year.
