Hello and welcome to your February/ March edition of Tadcaster Echo.
January is now over, and for many it can be a hard month. However, February is here, the month of love, and those lighter nights are just around the corner.
We have plenty of offers from local businesses in our area as well as a selection of feel-good stories from the community.
This month, we take a look at Sherburn & Villages Community Library - run by volunteers for the community.
The award winning NETheatre York is back with the outrageously funny and iconic musical ‘Priscilla Queen of the Desert’.
We also take a look at Peter Pan Nursery - a registered charity based in Sherburn in Elmet.
As always, if you would like your business to be featured in the magazine or have a story, please get in touch with a member of our fantastic team who will be happy to help.
So for now, sit down with a cuppa and enjoy your latest edition of Tadcaster Echo. We will see you again in April.

A powerful new solo theatre piece, Jesse North is Broken, is an urgent, funny and deeply personal portrait of working-class survival in Britain today.
Jesse is 25 and from Hull. She’s a carer on the minimum wage, holding other people’s lives together while her own feels increasingly chaotic. Told over the course of a single night, the show follows Jesse from care shift to dance floor, from late-night kebab runs to an early-morning emergency call-out, as she battles a system that undervalues her work and a city that has shaped who she is.
Inside Jesse’s head, ADHD-fuelled thoughts collide with anxiety, humour and grit as she searches for order in the chaos. What emerges is a raw and honest account of modern care work, young womanhood and

the emotional cost of being relied upon while rarely being supported.
Both political and personal, Jesse North is Broken shines a spotlight on the reality of a crumbling care system, chronic underpayment, and the resilience demanded of young working-class women trying to piece themselves together in a society that keeps breaking them.
Written and starring Yorkshire actress Martha Godber (Do I Love You?), this 60-minute, one-act play continues the company’s commitment to telling bold, socially relevant stories rooted in the North, with humour, compassion and unflinching honesty.
York Theatre Royal, in the Studio Monday 11th May - Thursday 14th May

The library was saved from closure in 2017, and now over 50 volunteers help keep the library open, in partnership with North Yorkshire Council
As well as the usual range of books available to borrow with your free library card (and even more available to order), there’s also newspapers and magazines, maps, computers and wifi, printing, photocopying and laminating and an information point. A home delivery service is available for the less mobile.
Regular free activities take place, including knit and natter, children’s story time, stay and play, free family crafts and the regular holiday ‘reading challenges’.
The library is the starting point for wellbeing walks too, and during the colder months, the library is a ‘Warm Welcome Space’.
It’s a valued space where people can meet, take
part in activities, including those for children, have access to computers, get help with queries, and borrow from a huge supply of books.
Would you like to volunteer? You can pop in or email sherburn.library@siect.uk to express an interest. They look for volunteers to cover library shifts and help run events and activities.
All their regular events are shown on the website events calendar here: https://savct.uk/libraryactivities-timetable/
Find the library on Finkle Hill (behind Boots near the crossroads), Sherburn in Elmet, LS25 6EA.

Rising demand for an older people’s grass cutting scheme has contributed to another huge year for a leading Wetherby charitybut future funding challenges remain.
In 2025, there were more than 17,500 interactions with Wetherby in Support of the Elderly (WiSE) - which delivers a range of services to help people stay connected, active and independent.
The number of grass cuts and winter maintenance visits WiSE provides shot up from 500 to 600 last year, but BBC Children In Need funding for the scheme ends in March.
Other stand-out successes for the charity included the WiSE Owl Cafe, which reached a recordbreaking 11,000 attendances - an increase of 1,200 on the previous year. In June, the café also launched a popular men’s breakfast club every Friday at Boston Spa Village Hall, creating a new social space for older men.
Memory Café – which supports those living with dementia and their carers - saw 820 people attend, up 170 on the year before, and WiSE introduced a new quarterly Forget Me Not Café to give carers a few hours of respite.
Activities overall rose by 50 to hit 2,300 people coming along - while special events attracted 460 people on trips to Beamish, Blackpool, a York River cruise, Wetherby Racecourse, Christmas bingo and parties.
Welcome Café, the charity’s “pay as you feel” warm spaces café, supported 1,300 people and WiSE’s transport services delivered 430 journeys.
The Send a Smile scheme sent handmade post to 158 isolated older people, while Information & Advice services helped 520 people.
The charity continues to be powered by volunteers. In 2025, 120 volunteers gave a combined 6,850 hours of their time - up 150 hours on last year - helping WiSE deliver vital services across the community.
Wetherby in Support of the Elderly (WiSE) is a registered charity organisation part-funded by Leeds City Council (LCC). Its aim is to improve quality of life for the over-60s by providing community-based activities, information, help and support.

The nursery specialises in caring for children aged from birth to school age with learning and physical disabilities, illness and other children whose families have an additional need, from disability, mental health, illness to involvement of social care
The charity was setup by Gwan Sykes, just over 40 years ago with 50p and two volunteers. She recognised the need for respite care for children and families in our area who were struggling.
The list is not exhaustive and places will be considered where they see an additional need with the child or within the child’s family.
What sets them apart from mainstream nurseries is their higher than normal adult to child ratios, ensuring our children are offered the same opportunities to achieve their full potential, regardless of starting point or ability.
They also have a recently refurbished sensory room which is accessible to children allowing for stimulating exploration in a calm environment.
Their team are very experienced with SEN and are trained to support any medical intervention required whilst the children are in their care.
They have a qualified Nursing Associate and two volunteers who are retired nurses, which gives support and additional knowledge for those children who have more complex health needs.
Peter Pan Nursery is open Monday to Friday9.15am til 1pm, term time only.
They are always looking for volunteers to help at both the nursery and charity shop. No experience is necessary for either position as relevant training and support will be provided. If you’re interested in volunteering and would like further information, please call Kay on 01977 681863 or email: office@ peterpannursery.co.uk.
They do currently have places available depending on the needs of the child with more availability from September. Funded places are offered or a fee of £28 per session is chargeable where funding is not yet available. For further information and a chat with the nursery manager, contact Kim on 01977 681863 or email: manager@peterpannursery.co.uk
