Wetherby BMX track restoration nears completion thanks to community effort

The restoration of Wetherby’s BMX track is entering its final phase, marking a major milestone in a community-led effort to revive one of the town’s most exciting outdoor spaces.

While the project has taken longer than initially planned, the team behind it remains confident that completion is close and that the track will soon be ready to welcome riders once again.

Originally built in the early 1980s, the Wetherby BMX track quickly became a popular spot for local families, young riders, and cycling enthusiasts. For decades, it served as a hub for outdoor activity and youth engagement. Over time, however, the track fell into disrepair due to limited maintenance and funding. Recognising its potential and the role it once played in the community, a group of volunteers formed the Friends of Wetherby BMX Track to bring it back to life.

Led by Danny Roberts, the group has worked tirelessly to rebuild the track from the ground up drawing support from people and businesses across the community.

Danny told Tadcaster Echo: “It’s taken longer than we hoped, but that’s the reality of a volunteer-led project. Everyone’s juggling jobs, families, and other commitments but the dedication has been incredible.”

The restoration has involved clearing overgrown areas, reshaping the track layout, improving drainage, and preparing the surface for safe, sustainable use. The final stages will include surfacing, signage, and safety checks to ensure the track meets modern standards.

There has been widespread support for the project, with help coming from Wetherby Town Council, Wetherby Lions, local businesses and the volunteers who’ve contributed time, tools, and energy to the cause.

Jigsaws offer a wide range of teaching, learning and caring opportunities for your child to attend. We have some availability for funded and non -funded sessions for babies from 9 months to pre-school age. If you would like to arrange a visit or find out more contact us now.

As a not-for-profit organisation we need to raise funds to support our new build expansion project.

We are arranging fund raising events throughout the year and we hope you can join us and help our early years setting.

We have been part of the local community for the last 17 years caring and educating 100’s of preschool children and we want to make sure we can be part of the next generations education.

Anne Davies, Trustee, Boston Spa Village Hall told Tadcaster Echo: “As you can imagine running a building of this size does not come cheap and we are constantly updating the rooms and adding facilities where we can. We do this through both grants and fundraising events such as the art festival, fashion shows, fairs etc.”

“ Our intention for the coming year is to refurbish the entrance way into the Wharf and Lantern room, make insulation improvements, refurbish the toilets and kitchen. So we are busy at the moment applying for grants as this will be a substantial cost.”

New TADvantage Card Launches to Reward Loyal Shoppers and Boost

Tadcaster’s Independent Businesses

Tadcaster’s independent businesses are set to receive a major boost with the launch of an exciting new loyalty scheme that rewards shoppers for supporting local businesses. The TADvantage card was officially launched on 30th November at Tadcaster’s Christmas Market, offering residents and visitors an innovative way to discover the town’s diverse retail offering while earning rewards

The free loyalty card works simply: shoppers collect six stamps from any participating independent business across Tadcaster and claims a reward.

Whether picking up groceries, enjoying a coffee, or browsing for gifts, every purchase helps support the town’s vibrant high street while building toward a reward.

Cards can be collected from any participating business displaying the TADvantage logo, making it easy for shoppers to start earning stamps immediately.

David Skaith, Mayor of York and North Yorkshire, said: “The TADvantage card is a great initiative set to champion local businesses and encourage shoppers to explore all that Tadcaster has to offer. The town is bursting with character, and it’s

wonderful to support a creative project through my Vibrant and Sustainable High Streets Fund that celebrates our independent businesses and adds fresh energy to the town centre.”

The scheme is designed to increase footfall across Tadcaster’s diverse range of independent shops, cafes, and services while strengthening community connections and encouraging residents to discover hidden gems on their doorstep.

Wetherby’s leading older persons charity has responded to growing demand for falls prevention by offering a new course of strength and balance exercise classes.

Wetherby in Support of the Elderly (WiSE) has funded dance instructor Kat Burgess’ ‘Later Life’ qualification through Active Leeds – which focuses on reducing inactivity and increasing the level of physical activity in the city.

The new Falls Management Exercise (FaME) classes start in January and involve a mixture of chair-based and standing strength and balance exercises which can be repeated at home for people with low mobility.

Kat Burgess, who runs freestyle dance company Funky Jives, already works with WiSE,

delivering its weekly Move & Groove gentle exercise classes.

Trips and falls are a significant health concern for people over 60, with around one in three adults over the age of 65 living at home experiencing at least one fall a year.

The course will run for 20 weeks on a Thursday afternoon from 15th January 2026, 1.30pm3pm at Deepdale Community Centre, Boston Spa. There will be a pre-assessment week commencing 5th January.

The classes are free of charge but via referral only via Active Leeds referrals. To refer, phone 0113 3783680 or email health.programmes@ leeds.gov.uk
