Local bereavement group here to support you when it matters

Together we Support Bereavement Support Group offer help in various ways through weekly meetings and different activities

Rita Moody and Bev Ford collectively run the Together we Support Bereavement Support Group. They are both qualified civil celebrants who felt they could use their expertise to offer bereavement support.

They meet weekly in a safe environment, for everyone to express their emotions with a non-judgemental approach.

They help people to find comfort in speaking with others and to realise they are not alone in their grieving journey.

They wanted to help, and understand that people are all different in the way they cope in the grieving journey, and they hope new friendships will be formed.

They have boundaries - respecting each other, listening to each other, empathy and confidentiality. They offer support through a range of different activities including crafts, games, walks and talks - allowing everyone to just chat if that is what they want to do.

They are open to ideas, they want the group to receive the most out of it. Grief has no time limit and it effects us all in different ways. There are five stages of grief: denial, anger, bargaining, exogenous depression and acceptance - together they support each other sharing their coping mechanisms.

They encourage filling in a daily journal, which is provided by the group, so each individual can express their feelings, which they talk about at the groups.

Together we Support Bereavement Support Group meets weekly:

FROM A POLICE PERSPECTIVE:

Supporting the community in and out of uniform

This month, Scunthorpe Police talks to us about how policing can be a demanding and often relentless profession. While many switch off at the end of a shift, others choose to go even further, continuing to give back to the community in their own time

Inspector Dave Dosdale, from the Criminal Justice Unit, is a shining example of this dedication. Beyond his role in the force, Dave volunteers as the Player Welfare Manager for the Academy and Scholarship teams at Hull FC, a position he describes as “more of a hobby,” after supporting the Black & Whites for more than 40 years.

In this voluntary role, Dave has pioneered a new aftercare programme, believed to be the first of its kind in professional Rugby League, to support young players who are released from the club’s youth system. The three-year initiative will provide tailored mentorship, practical guidance, and emotional support to help those not offered professional contracts navigate their next steps in life.

Dave takes a personal approach to each individual’s journey, ensuring that all players, regardless of age, background, or length of time with the club, receive the support they need. “It’s about moral responsibility,” he explains. “We owe it to them to help however we can.”

Hull FC Chief Executive, Richie Myler, praised the initiative: “We’re proud to be setting a new standard when it comes to post-Academy support, and it’s kudos to Dave and the Academy team for putting this in place for 2026.”

Dave’s dedication to his voluntary role reflects the true spirit and exemplifies what it means to be a Humberside Police officer: committed, communityfocused, and always willing to go the extra mile.

Huge success at the Scunthorpe NICU Little Warriors Ball

The Ball was held at Forest Pines Hotel which raised over £17,000, with 230 guests including NICU doctors, nurses, healthcare assistants and both Scunthorpe and Hull neonatal matrons attending in support

Little Warriors is a charity focused on ensuring that families with babies in the NICU (Neonatal Intensive Care Unit) have the support they need.

They believe that no family should face this daunting journey alone. Their team works tirelessly to raise funds for equipment, facilities, and services not typically available to those in need.

Emma and Lee Clay, founders of Little Warriors, spent time on NICU with their son, Alfie. They have fundraised ever since, and raised hundreds of pounds for the hospital.

After nine years they took the leap and set up an independent charity dedicated to Scunthorpe NICU Little Warriors - and they have just celebrated their year anniversay since launching.

Emma, Lee and the neonatal team are constantly thinking of new fundraising ideas.

Kerry Grimbleby, senior staff nurse on NICU, told Scunthorpe Journal: “Before Covid the ward used to hold yearly reunion parties for NICU families which were always a huge success. These unfortunatley stopped throughout Covid.

Please mention Scunthorpe

“But with the new charity we thought it would be a good time to restart NICU celebration events and planning for the ball commenced.

“The ball took nearly a year of planning by myself. Most of the tables were past families on NICU, some of their babies not quiet a year old. One family even brought their 18 -year-old son who was looked after by many of the nurses on the NICU .

“Jason Thereadgold came and the Scunthorpe Baths Panto team - Annie Fanny, Lauren, Jess and Zoe.

“Each table was sponsored by a local business with a few other acts donating their time on the night to sing and perform.

“The ball raised over £17,000 and we are excited to do more in the future.”

Little Warriors hold a number of events and fundraisers every year. Last year they held their first NICU Buggy 5k walk at Central Park, which is now a yearly event. This year’s took place back in July.

They have bake sales in the hospital celebrating NICU Awareness Month and World Prematurity Day. Three staff members also did a charity sky dive last summer.

They are always looking for new ways to raise funds to improve family experiences on NICU and improve patient areas.

Plans and discussion are taking place currently to refurbish the parent accommodation area, making the bedroom more comfortable for families when they stay to be close to their baby.

If anyone would like to support them in any way, you can contact Kerry by email on: kerry.grimbleby@nhs.net
