The sun is shining, and we are certainly happy about that. Here at Scunthorpe Journal, we have got all your latest news and business offers from around the local area.

Lifestyle 2024!

Last month, Humberside Police hosted its launch event for Lifestyle, with sponsors in attendance, as it returns for another year

“Last year, young people volunteered more than 4,000 hours of their time and raised over £16,000 for local charities through a range of projects, including community litter picks, creating community gardens with access to wheelchair-friendly open spaces, and collecting for foodbanks.”

POLICE PERSPECTIVE:

Are you ready to take on the challenge of Lifestyle and help out your community?

The initiative is open to those aged between 10 and 18 years old. The aim is to encourage young people to join together as a team and take part in a project which will help benefit their community throughout the summer months.

There are also a host of fantastic prizes on offer for those who undertake the most creative and successful projects. These include an amazing five-day trip away to adventure holidays within the UK, as well as fantastic day passes to various attractions! Last year, young people volunteered more than 4,000 hours of their time and raised over £16,000 for local charities through a range of projects, including community litter picks, creating community gardens with access to wheelchair-friendly open spaces, and collecting for food banks.

The winners from last year, The Garden Rescuers and Cherry Champions, recently visited PGL Wales as a part of their prize! The teams had the opportunity to take part in a whole host of outdoor activities and learn a variety of new skills, such as raft building, abseiling and archery. There was also

the chance to get involved with lots of fun evening activities, like team games, campfires and a disco.

Community Safety Sergeant Nick Bunker said: “Lifestyle is a really important project that encourages the young people in our area to get involved with their community.

“The projects which we have seen throughout the many years of Lifestyle by young people has been inspiring, and I hope to see the continued success of the initiative, amongst young people, as we relaunch for another year.”

Scunthorpe Pride Festival is back for a second year running

Keep your diary free on Sunday 25th August for a day of promoting diversity, acceptance and bringing the local community together

Last year Scunthorpe Pride Festival was a massive success with a turnout of over 3,000 people of all different ages, backgrounds and cultures. It showed the LGBTQ+ community that there is support and acceptance within our town and wider areas. It brought people together and it didn’t matter who you were or where you’d come from.

So much so, they’re doing it all again for 2024…

There will be a large main stage which is bigger than last year in Church Square, two bars, various bands, acts and entertainers, free activities, lots of food options and the popular Pride market, and best of all, the whole event is FREE with no tickets required.

The event will run from 12pm until 7pm, with hopes of a short on-foot town parade around 11:30am.

Acts on the day

• An hour of children’s and family entertainment with A-OH-K entertainment.

• 90’s dance legends (Ian Van Dahl & Kelly Llorenna) will be the midday and end-of-day headliners

• Rising star BUZZKILL JOY, originally from Scunthorpe but now rocking it in London, and on the shortlist to play some of the biggest festivals around.

• Local musicians, September 6th, Shoot the Messenger. Burlesque troupe the Sugar Dolls, stilt walkers, along with Dame Ida returning to host.

• Steps tribute act “Deeper Shade Of Blue”.

• Scunthorpe Central Library is providing a sensory quiet zone and also a family escape room.

• 20:21 Visual Arts Centre will be opening up and they will be hosting an exhibition called “Strong as Steel” with works from LGBTQIA+ artists.

Leanne, the event organiser told Scunthorpe Journal: “It’s not a case of ‘look at me’, it’s about building a stronger community and bringing people together. Some people that attended Pride had maybe never experienced any sort of LGBTQ+ culture and there are certain negative stigmas surrounding us. We are all people at the end of the day. Some of our community can feel very isolated and this gave them a chance to get out and meet people that accepted them, even with a smile.

“There are still so many countries around the world where homosexuality is a criminal offence. The LGBTQ+

community still faces a lot of hate crime, maybe this is fear of the unknown or the pure fact it’s different, whatever it is, we sure have come a long way but there is still a long way to go. Pride means different things to different people.

“Pride is special, it’s a place to feel safe, celebrate and just remember how far we have come. Celebrating differences and diversity.”

The full line-up has yet to be announced so keep your eye on social media. Local businesses and organisations are getting involved with sponsorship, stalls and support and the event has received an excellent response so far. There is still time to get involved and show your support.
