Even though she lost her fight with cancer, and I don’t believe in an afterlife, I wanted to do something good in her memory.”

David, 48, says: “It was joked around that she might need a transplant and I was humorously asked if I would give her one of my kidneys. No problem I said, but I meant it seriously.”

“I remember thinking someone has been told there’s a chance.

Someone is banking on me now.”

Luckily, David’s sister gave birth and everything was fine. It was when his sister was diagnosed with cancer, that David began to give blood.

David adds: “My sister told my mum how proud she was and that meant a lot, especially coming from someone who I

After donating an astonishing 51 times, David began to look into kidney donation.

“After my 50th blood donation, I found something on the web suggesting that although alive donors normally give a kidney

to family members, it’s also possible to give a kidney to wherever it may be wanted.”

This led David to seriously consider donating a kidney so he got in touch with his local transplant centre. Before he knew it, he had a match!

“I remember thinking someone has been told there’s a chance, they’ve had the tests, they know it’s a viable match, and now after potentially years of waiting, there is an end in sight for them and their life will change.

“I have someone who is banking on me now.”

David wasn’t allowed to know anything personal about his donor, but was told the donor had been on the list a while.

“I was so glad to be able to do this for them.”

“I’ve gone from someone who would visibly sweat at the thought of being injected, to donating blood over 50 times and now an organ! I am so very thankful to all my family and friends and the medical staff

that have helped me during the past 18 months.

“Before I could do whatever I want, now two of us can do whatever we want. It cost me nothing, but a little discomfort.”

This isn’t the end of the journey for David, he hopes to spread awareness and get more people on to the donor register.

“Talking to people about what I’m doing, I’m trying to highlight how good it is to sign up for organ donation, blood donation and bone marrow donation. The organ donation form is simple and only takes you two minutes to fill in, but it could potentially give life to so many people. Let it be your legacy.”

RACHAEL’S RIDERS HELP FUND DREAM TRIP OF A LIFETIME! A group of six motorcyclists have completed a 400-mile challenge to help fund a dream holiday to Florida for Rachael Dawson who has incurable cancer

Rachael, 34, from Wrawby, has stage 3 aggressive breast cancer. After 15 months of gruelling treatment, she received the all clear, only to be told the cancer had returned just after her wedding this September.

The ride was organised by Rachael’s Aunt Marie and Uncle Steve. They organised for the boys to buy their bikes and take their tests ready to get them on the road ready for the day - some of them hadn’t even got their CBT to ride a moped before this!

The boys and the support vehicles (driven by Rachael’s husband and her dad) set off to Brands Hatch in Kent at 6am on 11th November and 18 hours, three punctures and regular fuel top-ups later finally reached their home at 1.30am on the 12th November, greeted by Rachael!

Dominic Hanton, Rachael’s brother, who took part in the challenge, says: “Having the opportunity to undertake this challenge to raise money to send

Rachael on her dream holiday was fantastic. The fact that she is the most kind, caring and selfless person I have ever met, made it more meaningful to help send this amazing woman on her dream holiday. As a big family there is no better feeling than everyone coming together and fighting Rachael’s corner.

“The support we have received is so overwhelming and the family will be forever grateful. It was such a wonderful feeling seeing Rachael’s face as we returned from our trip and it has been amazing to see the local community come together to support this cause.”

The target was originally £5,000 but with the support being so huge the target is now £10,000 so Rachael can go on her dream trip.

New DIY store opens in Scunthorpe Town Centre Alpha Building Plastics Ltd has opened a new showroom on Mary Street that promises to give something back to the community! community with a one-stop shop for everything DIY. Managing director, Paul White, told Scunthorpe Journal: “It is like a ghost town. I am not from Scunthorpe originally but I have been here for over 20 years now.

Established in 2017, a family run business who supply low-maintenance building products to the trade and public, seven days a week.

“Around Mary Street, there are a lot of shops that are closed. You have to travel far to many places to get what you need.

I wanted to put something back into the town centre.”

The shop offers a range of roof line, cladding, flooring and other products for internal or external work.

The company is also thinking about selling double-glazed windows and has the backing from large companies who can provide the materials.

One of the main reasons the store is open everyday is to make the shop more accessible to the community.

How do I get my child into Grammar school?

Kip McGrath’s educational consultant, Clare Powell tells us how important it is to start preparations for Grammar school early In an world with intense competition for well-paid jobs, parents are striving harder than ever to give their children the best educational opportunities in life. This has meant a growing demand for grammar school places, as a higher percentage of students from these schools are accepted for universities (including Oxford and Cambridge) than other sixth-form education providers.

As parents and students are beginning to recognise this trend, we have experienced an increase in demand for 11-plus preparation. It can be argued that comprehensive and secondary schools are unable to successfully cater for higher ability students because expectations are focused on gaining grades 4 and 5 at GCSE, meaning students who are capable of more are not always encouraged to aim higher or even given the opportunity to do so.

For many 11-plus students, grammar school is a

way to ensure they have access to the higher grades and the opportunity to network with children of a similar ability and temperament. This year our students achieved scores between 228 and 272, with the pass mark being 220 and the top score 280.

Jasmia, a student on the 11-plus course, said: “Kip gave me the confidence and belief in myself to pass the 11-plus.”

Healthy Lifestyle Service supports people of Scunthorpe to improve their health It’s time to start thinking about your New Year’s resolution. Want to quit smoking?

Want to focus on your health? Well, the help you need is here.

North Lincolnshire Council launched the Healthy Lifestyle Service to give free support services in one place, making it easier for people to get support to make changes to health and wellbeing.

A team of friendly and knowledgeable healthy lifestyle facilitators can support people who live and/or work in North Lincolnshire to focus on how to: • Achieve and maintain a healthy weight - the service provides access to a 12-week Adult Weight Management Course. This is a one-hour session each week and enables individuals to understand the relationship between activity, nutrition and their weight.

• Stop smoking - the service can provide evidencebased stop smoking support to people aged 16 and over. Courses run for six weeks and will include carbon monoxide readings, behavioural support and information detailing different forms of

Nicotine Replacement Treatment, guidance for use, withdrawal symptoms and coping strategies.

The services can also offer support to: • Become more physically active • Increase wellbeing including mental and emotional health • Prepare healthy meals from scratch • Have an NHS Health Check People can refer themselves to the service or be referred by other agencies.

An initial one-to-one assessment will be offered to identify individual’s health and wellbeing goals before taking the next steps to a healthier lifestyle.

Based at Scunthorpe Central, appointments are available between 8am-8pm, Monday to Friday and 9am-12pm on Saturdays.

The service can also be accessed at leisure centres, wellbeing hubs, children’s centres and some GP surgeries.

Duncan adds: “This year we had over 60 senior riders take part in our league and nearly 30 youths (under 16). We pride ourselves in creating events that are friendly and accommodating whilst offering a good competition for all.”

The group offers road bike training, track cycling tasters, track training and of course, track racing. Aero testing sessions which are run by Aerocoach are also available which aims to give riders a more aerodynamic position on the bike.

Organisers as well as riders, Duncan and Becky, compete in various events around the country along with the rest of the team.

Becky told Scunthorpe Journal: “Newcomers are always welcome, regardless of age and experience, we try and give a personal one to one induction to track cycling and try to make it

Becky continues: “None of what we do here at Quibell Park would be possible without the great team of volunteers we have helping us.”

Training sessions are run on selected Wednesdays and Fridays when there isn’t a race on. All dates are published on the Facebook page as well as the race dates on British Cycling’s website.
