Keeping children
This month, Scunthorpe Policing Team talks to us about how important it is to remember how to keep children safe when using devices online
Please mention
‘Try to be open with your children so that they know they can come to you if something has happened online that worries them or they’re upset about or if a stranger has tried to contact them or send them a friend request.’
PERSPECTIVE:
children safe online
Did your child receive a new mobile phone, tablet or games console this Christmas?
Whilst many people see it as a perfect time to treat their loved ones and look to buy the latest electronic gadget, it’s important to remember how to keep children safe when using devices online.
For some children, owning a new device will be the first time they have access to the online world and unfortunately, it can expose them to new risks that they need to be aware of.
Let us help you keep them safe by making sure security and privacy settings are changed to ensure they don’t get contacted by someone you don’t want to.
Don’t leave it to chance, make sure that if you are planning to gift a games console, tablet or mobile phone to any young person, have it set up to help prevent them from being contacted by someone you would really not want to be speaking to or communicating with your children.
It’s simple to do, any high-street retailer will be able to help you when you make a purchase, or you can find lots of information online on the Think You Know, Get Safe Online and NSPCC websites.
Detective Sergeant Emily Jackson from our POLIT (Police Online Investigation Team) said, “If you are buying a device for your children this year, make sure it is age appropriate and has the parental controls set up to protect them from unwanted online contact.
“We don’t want to scare parents and carers about the safety of their children, we simply want to make sure they talk to their children about staying safe online.
“Try to be open with your children so that they know they can come to you if something has happened online that worries them or they’re upset about or if a stranger has tried to contact them or send them a friend request.
“If you think an offence has taken place please call 101 and talk to us. We will take action against those who seek to harm children online.
“As a parent myself, I understand the concerns other parents may have around the dangers of the online world, and so I would advise them to take the time to check the parental controls on their devices to ensure these remain safe.”
Keep your children safe now and in the future by making sure their devices are secure.
Miss Teen Great Britain finalist organising Live In The Rainbow Ball all
in the aid of charity
Local girl, Kayleigh Cook brings Live In The Rainbow Ball to Scunthorpe on Saturday 14th September 2024
Kayleigh Cook, aged 17 from Scunthorpe was diagnosed with Autism three years ago, which has been an ongoing battle for her and her family. She wanted to use her own experiences to help others that are going through the same which is why she is organising Live In The Rainbow Ball – to raise money for Together for Short Lives and Rubiks Inclusive Counselling for their work with Autism.
The ball will be held on Saturday 14th September 2024 at Forest Pines, Scunthorpe – the evening will involve a three-course meal with arrival drinks.
Entertainment will be brought to you by Twisted Belles with their fire performers, stilt walkers and glitter hostesses, Ian Smith performing table magic, SylviMaree singing and Vinyl DJ for dancing the night away. As well as a chocolate fountain, magic mirror photobooth, sweet cart, raffle and games – needless to say a fun-filled night you wont want to miss.
All money raised from the event will go to Together for Short Lives, the UK’s leading charity for Children’s Palliative Care and Rubiks Inclusive Counselling, offering therapy if you’re struggling with your mental health or looking to make a positive change in your life.
Kayleigh has her sights set on hopefully raising £5,000 so she can split the money between both charities which would make a huge difference to them, but she would be grateful for any amount raised, she told us: “some money is better than no money and will still help both charities, but I do really hope I can reach the £5,000 figure, it would be so amazing.”
Kayleigh doesn’t let her diagnosis get in her way, she told Scunthorpe Journal: “My passion in life has always been acting, I hope to one day see myself up on that big screen and see all my dreams come true.
“I started pageantry a few years ago and entered my first one in October 2022, and competed in October 2023. The whole experience was amazing and eye-opening, everyone was so kind and determined to help people and charities which led me to enter another two this year, Crown UK and Miss Teen Great Britain and I am so excited to continue my journey.”
If you would like to support Kayleigh and help raise money for these amazing causes, you can buy tickets for Live In The Rainbow Ball by emailing Kayleigh on kayleighcook877@gmail.com or scanning the QR code which will take you to their Facebook.
