Meet the husband and wife team behind Lighthouse Finance

Golf challenge raises funds for local football teams Howden AFC Pan-Disability team was formed four years ago by Brendan Byrne and Damien Sharp to ensure every child has the opportunity to be included in the game they love. It also gives parents a place to connect with others in similar situations.

Brendan now leads the group with Roy Atkinson.

Both have children with additional needs, and the sessions give children a chance to play football or simply run around and burn off energy.

Brendan and Roy were nominated for East Riding FA Coach of the Year and won the award in 2025 and 2026.

Roy told Our Goole: “The group is vital for children and parents in the area. There’s nothing else like it near Goole or Howden, and the Page 8

children look forward to coming every week.

“We came up with the idea for Driving The Distance to raise funds for the children. Brendan and I also enjoy golf, so it felt like a natural fit.

“We wanted to hit enough golf balls to cover the distance from Land’s End to John O’Groats - 874 miles, or 1,538,240 yards. That’s at least 8,000 shots.”

FROM A POLICE PERSPECTIVE: The role of a Family Liaison Officer families. I wanted to be able to help guide and support them through that process.

What specialist training do FLOs receive?

The training is a two-week course. It includes presentations from partner agencies, organisations and charities. Family members attend to share their experiences of working with FLOs, alongside Veteran FLO’s who impart their practical experience of deployment to local and national major incidents.

In this month’s issue, Goole Policing Team talks to us about Family Liaison Officers (FLOs), specially trained detectives who volunteer to take on an additional role, acting as the vital link between investigating officers and the families of victims.

We spoke to Detective Constable Lou Cross, a Family Liaison Officer with Humberside Police, about what inspired her to become an FLO and her recent experience supporting families affected by the Legacy Independent Funeral Directors investigation.

What is your current role, and how long have you served with Humberside Police?

I’m a Detective Constable within our Internal Domestic Abuse Team based at Priory Road, and I’ve completed 22 years’ service with Humberside Police.

When did you decide to become a Family Liaison Officer?

I completed my FLO training in July 2020, so I’ve been carrying out the role for around six years.

What inspired you to become a FLO? During my time in CID, I was often involved in investigations with families of victims and witnessed the emotional impact that serious investigations had on

Why is the role of a Family Liaison Officer so important?

We provide dedicated one-to-one support for families and act as the personal and crucial link between them and the Major Crime Team. We provide timely updates to families to keep them informed throughout what is often an incredibly difficult and overwhelming time. Having someone they know and trust to answer questions, explain processes and provide reassurance can make a huge difference.

When are FLOs assigned to an investigation?

Deployment is as soon as possible after an investigation involving a suspicious death begins. After being briefed by the SIO and Family Liaison Advisor, we aim to visit the family quickly as a pair. The aim is to remain with the family throughout the entire investigation, often supporting families up to and including the court proceedings and sentencing. An exit strategy is always followed with each family.

Being a FLO is challenging, demanding and emotionally difficult, but it’s also one of the most rewarding roles I’ve ever undertaken.

Every FLO deployment reminds me why the role matters and knowing I have helped a family through one of the darkest times of their lives makes every challenge worthwhile.

Local businessman conquers Tough Mudder in support of Charity Jake Walsh of Casselden & Walsh Independent Funeral Directors in Goole joined forces with his wife, Kirsty, and friends Becca, Jase, and Ads to honour baby Rocky and raise funds for Cold Cots and The Chasing Rainbows Charity Why did you choose Tough Mudder Yorkshire as your fundraising challenge?

This was something way out of my comfort zone.

So when we were discussing a fundraising event I thought it was best to raise money by really pushing myself.

How did you prepare physically and mentally for the event?

Mentally it was just to focus on why and who I was running for. Physically I went to the gym and did a lot of walking at home. I lost two-and-a-half stone in the process.

What was the toughest obstacle you faced during the course?

Page 12

For me it was the 40ft triangle rigging that I had to climb over. I am petrified of heights. We obviously get the choice of skipping obstacles but I was determined to do them all.

How did it feel crossing the finish line?

The fact Team Rocky crossed the line all together and holding hands with my wife Kirsty as well as my friends and Rocky’s family. I got very emotional because the support we got for it was incredible. It really was a great personal achievement.

Was there a moment during the event when you thought of Rocky to help you keep going?

Yes, Rocky was always in my mind as well as his parents who are very close friends of mine, I just didn’t want to give up and feel like I failed them or Rocky. We miss him dearly and he should still be here now, but there is so much love for him and the family - that’s what kept me going.

What does dedicating this challenge to Rocky mean to you?

Everything, even though sadly due to my work we have taken care of children and babies on their final journey. Being so close to home and knowing the family so well it was such a special thing that we could do for Rocky and help other families in such a sad and emotional time.

Why did you choose to support Cold Cots and The Chasing Rainbows Charity?

The charity is a local charity run by a specialist bereavement midwife who really makes a difference especially to Rocky’s parents and helped them and others tremendously. Cold Cots really offer such comfort to bereaved families and give such crucial time that parents and families can spend with their little ones. Something that once its gone can never be regained.

What has the response from friends, family, and the local community been like?

I have been blown away with the response of friends, family and the local community. Such generosity shown by complete strangers to us is

really heart-warming and restores your faith in humanity. I cannot thank everyone enough who has donated to this cause. You are all heroes.

What do you hope people take away after reading your story?

During deep and emotional sadness there will be people who will step up and offer kindness and support. Friends, family and even strangers can bring some form of positivity to your life.

Remember to be kind to everyone, you do not know what is going on in their lives.

Is there anything about Rocky, your journey, or these charities that we haven’t asked but you would like people to know?

Rocky and others may have been born sleeping but have brought people together in their memory. These people have brough so much good into the world.

When it is baby loss awareness week in October, I will be opening my chapel up again to families who wish to light a candle or have some time to reflect and hope it will give comfort to families whether they lost their child many years ago or recently.
