The nights are getting darker and colder but we love this time of year where you can get all cosy and enjoy a nice, warm home-cooked meal.

This edition is jam-packed with some brilliant festive events happening in our local area during the Christmas period - including The Pubs’ Community Christmas Market, the countdown begins: Santa Claus is coming to Goole, and a double page spread on the brilliant local

businesses and events nearby who you can support throughout the festive period.

Bringing festive back to The Pubs’ Community

The event will be completely free, both for visitors and for stallholders, and will be held on the first Friday in December

Our Goole spoke to Stevie Laine Walton Snead from The Peacock pub to find out more: “After speaking with several local pub landlords and landladies, we all felt that cancelling the market this year was a real loss to our town. When I read about its cancellation, I thought why not bring it indoors?

“Between us, we already have everything needed to host a warm, welcoming, and festive market within our local pubs. It’s a great way to bring life back into the town and lift community spirits.

“This event isn’t just for the larger

businesses, it’s a chance for smaller traders, makers, and independent talents to shine.

“At The Peacock, we’ll have live music from Goole’s own Joe Hodgson, alongside a wonderful selection of stalls to browse while enjoying your favourite festive drinks. Other venues are encouraged to join in too, offering their own entertainment, food, and festive cheer.

“We’re thrilled to have some brilliant local talent involved already:

• Katie Pullan of WhatKatyDid Events and Crafts, bringing her creative festive magic.

festive cheer to Goole Community Christmas Market

• Lewis Giles of Flip’n’Bun, serving up delicious street food.

• Joe Hodgson of Sandra’s Wedding, performing live music to set the perfect atmosphere.

“These are just a few of the incredible local people helping to make this event something special.

“The last few years have reminded us all how important local connection really is. This market is our way of saying thank you to everyone who continues to support our pubs and small businesses all year round. It’s also a brilliant opportunity to showcase what Goole has to offer in a relaxed, festive setting.

“We know our high street and town centre have faced challenges - empty shops and ongoing developments

have left things feeling a little flat. But Goole still has so much heart. This is our chance to bring life, laughter, and togetherness back to it.

“We hope this Christmas Market brings people together, supports local traders, and gives everyone something to look forward to as the festive season approaches - a night filled with music, laughter, and community spirit.

“I’d like to thank Our Goole for the opportunity to feature our proposed Community Christmas Market. I’m really excited to be working together to help spread the word about this festive event.

“So come along, raise a glass, shop local, and help us bring a little festive cheer back to Goole.”

Fibre Environmental Ltd tees

up sponsorship of Drax Golf Club’s new Halfway House

Drax Golf Club has announced a new partnership with Fibre Environmental Ltd, a leading Asbestos Management Specialists.

Fibre Environmental will be the official sponsor of the club’s brand new halfway house, providing a welcome refreshment stop for golfers on the course.

This exciting collaboration marks a significant investment in the club’s facilities and a commitment to enhancing the golfing experience for all members and visitors.

The new halfway house, a modern and comfortable amenity, allows golfers to refuel and relax before, during or after their round.

Kevin Harrison, Club Chairman told Our Goole: “We are absolutely thrilled to welcome Fibre Environmental Ltd as our sponsor for the new halfway house.

“Their commitment to supporting local sports and communities aligns perfectly with our values. This sponsorship will undoubtedly contribute to a more enjoyable and seamless experience for our golfers, and we are incredibly grateful for their generosity.”

Fibre Environmental Ltd, renowned for its expertise and dedication to safe and compliant asbestos management solutions, is a well-respected local business with a strong community focus.

Adam Short, Managing Director, Fibre Environmental told Our Goole: “Fibre Environmental is proud to support Drax Golf Club and its members. As a Yorkshire-based company, we are always keen to invest in local initiatives that promote well-being and community spirit. The new halfway house is a fantastic addition to the club, and we are excited to see it become a central hub for golfers.”

This month, local property expert David Leake from The Property Experts talks to us about the rise in mortgage rates and what that means for buyers

BLOW FOR HOMEBUYERS AS MORTGAGE RATES RISE

Average mortgage rates increased for the first time in six months in October.

Data from Moneyfacts shows the overall average for two-and-five-year fixed rates increased in October by 0.02% to 5.02% and 4.98% respectively.

Product choice has also fallen month-on-month, to 6,998 options. The combination in availability of mortgage deals at both the 90% and 95% loanto-value rose to 1,362, which is the highest level in 17 years.

It is not all doom and gloom for borrowers as those who locked into a two-year fixed rate deal back in October 2023 would have been paying 6.47%

on average, compared to 4.98% now. That is a difference of £225 per month in repayments on a £250,000 mortgage over 25 years.

The relaxation of loan-to-income rules is a positive step for improving mortgage affordability challenges, but first-time buyers are still waiting for more affordable housing to be built.

However, some of the most competitive fixed-rate products remain available at around 3.8%, and now may be a sensible time for buyers to lock in. If rates improve later, most borrowers can renegotiate before completion, so it’s worth securing a good deal while it’s on the table.
