We shine a spotlight on Howden Hammers U13 Girls

Howden Hammers U13 Girls play in the East Riding Girls Football League, currently 3rd in the league

The Howden AFC Hammers U13 Girls are a part of Howden AFC. They train on a Wednesday 7-8pm and play in the competitive league on Saturdays.

Coach Neil Jessop told Our Goole: “I coach the team along with two other parents. My daughter joined around two years ago.

“We play in the East Riding Girls Football League, we are currently third in the league in spite of having only 13 players in our squad at 11 a side. Their success is down to the fantastic commitment of all of our players and parents!

“The girls all love playing football together and it’s also a great social time for them. Football is ideal for them to improve their fitness and also to develop teamwork skills as they work together through training and matches.

“The improvement in confidence and skill levels is so rewarding to see and I think it gives them an advantage as they grow up over their peers who don’t take part in sports.

“The team were given the opportunity by Hull City to be flag bearers last season and really

enjoyed the experience of being on the pitch in front of 20,000 people!

“We always look for opportunities for the girls and I’m sure there’ll be more to come.

“Football is great as a community sport, it brings people together with a common passion and the growth of the women’s game has shown it is a game for everyone.”

Would you like to be a part of Howden Hammers U13 Girls?

Game on: Discover Wressle Grange’s brand-new padel courts

Padel is the fastest-growing sport in the UK. It is a fun, fast-paced game that combines elements of tennis and squash, played on an enclosed court with solid bats and a slightly lower-pressure ball

Wressle Grange is run by Claire and Graham Foster on their family farm.

Grange Farm Cottages opened in 2012 with three self-catering properties set on arable farm land, offering lovely views across open fields.

it’s hugely popular with families, couples and people working away from home.

After 10 successful years Claire and Graham added the farmhouse which offers group stays for celebration groups up to 14 in a luxury, large house with hot tub, pool table and seated fire pit area.

This year they then added the two padel courts.

Padel games are usually played in doubles,

making it a social and easy-to-learn activity for all ages and abilities.

And you do not need years of experience or expensive equipment to enjoy it.

Whether you are visiting Wressle Grange for a relaxing countryside break or live locally and want to get active with friends, padel is a great way to connect, compete, and have fun outdoors.

FROM A POLICE PERSPECTIVE: The return of the Night Challenge!

Humberside Police are delighted to celebrate the return of Night Challenge, which took place last month. Youth teams from across the force area gathered at Raywell Scout Camp to participate in the 19th annual Night Challenge. The overnight event, organised by the Community Safety Unit, involved 24 groups of young people taking on a 12.6 mile hike through Brantingham Dale, with groups starting throughout the evening and walking into the night.

Each annual Night Challenge has a theme - this year’s was arson and anti-social behaviour.

Supported by over 100 volunteers and numerous partner agencies, the initiative pushes young people out of their comfort zone through a series of mental and physical challenges.

Leading on the initiative is Katie Hardy from the Community Safety Unit, who said: “The project really

couldn’t go ahead each year without the support of our partners and those who kindly donate their time, expertise and equipment.

“We even had smoke simulation goggles loaned to us by Ruth Lee and Fireware to make our challenges more realistic. We are lucky to have a well-establish network and would like to thank everyone who supports us and the young people.”

Manager of the Community Safety Unit Adil Khan said: “Every year we work hard to create an experience that pushes the boundaries and helps young people really understand the work we do collectively to keep themselves and our communities safe.

“By presenting both sides of the story, this year’s event highlighted to the young people who attended the true cost of ASB and arson, outlining the devastating impact these can have not only on the local community but also for their own futures.

This year, the Tribune Trust was the main sponsor of their event. Its Chair Chris Blacksell said: “We have supported it since its inception and hope to continue to do so. The volunteers who give their time to run it are incredible, but the real stars are the young people who step up and take part in what is a demanding, challenging, but ultimately inspiring challenge. We see huge benefits for those young people, and look forward to seeing how they do.”

This annual initiative is organised by the Community Safety Unit within Humberside Police.

This month, local property expert David Leake from The Property Experts talks to us about the importance of mortgage awareness

Poor mortgage awareness is holding buyers back

Millions of would-be first time buyers are being held back by widespread confusion about mortgages, according to new research from the HomeOwners Alliance.

The campaign group surveyed more than 2,000 adults. Key findings included 65% believing having bad credit means you cannot get a mortgage, while 62% think you need at least a 10% deposit to buy a home.

Half believe the maximum they can borrow is limited to four to five times their income, while a similar figure believe the lowest interest rate means the cheapest mortgage overall.

Another 40% believe it is best to get a mortgage with their current bank, while a quarter think you cannot explore mortgage options until you have found a property.

Too many first-time buyers are putting themselves out of the running before they have even had a proper conversation with a mortgage broker about what might be possible. Misunderstandings about deposits, borrowing limits and how mortgages work are denting confidence at the very first hurdle.

Getting clear, independent advice early on can make a real difference.
