A local family from Swinefleet are raising funds to ensure their garden can be transformed into a safe and accessible area, for their son, Lucas.

Lucas, who suffers from cerebral palsy, epilepsy and global development delay, is currently unable to access the garden and is missing out on valuable outdoor time.

The family are now trying to raise funds for Lucas to ensure he can enjoy the sunshine and fresh air. The initial target is £1000, with funds going towards making the garden a safe area for Lucas.

We caught up with Lucas’s mother, Tessa, who told us more about the family’s fundraising effort.

“The donations will focus mainly on removing Page 6

our current unsafe decking and having the area paved, making it accessible for his wheelchair.

If there are any funds left we would also have a trampoline fitted into the ground so Lucas could safely use it, and fence around our oil tank to make it more secure.”

“The overall aim is to make the garden a fun place for the family, and especially for Lucas. We would love him to enjoy all the senses of the outdoors, such as smells, sounds and sight, and for the garden to be accessible for his wheelchair so he can move himself around freely.”

“Since you last covered Lucas, he has improved and is doing so well. He can now use his wheelchair himself and can both stand and move whilst holding onto something. He has just started using a walking frame and is starting to say some words, with his eyesight also improving.

Lucas also loves his school at St Anne’s, and is now full-time.

Tessa also spoke about her appreciation of the kind donations of those who wish to help the cause. She added that it would ‘mean the world’ to her if Lucas was able to experience the sights and sounds of the outdoors.

“Personally, it means the world to us, just

knowing he is not missing out and is getting so much joy from being outdoors and experiencing all the sights and sounds. Just because he has additional needs and a wheelchair does not mean he should miss out; it is so important to us as parents to make sure this happens.”

“Also, we can’t express how grateful we are as a family to receive so much help and support from our community of Swinefleet and Goole. We have had people offering their help with the garden, and people providing raffle prizes or raising funds in their own way for us. They are all amazing!”

E PERSPECTIVE: There are various different youth engagement initiatives run throughout the year to help build great relationships with the youngsters that live in our area.

One of our youth engagement projects is Lifestyle. Goole Community Officers will soon be visiting local schools and colleges to promote Lifestyle 2019. We ask young people aged 10-18 to register in teams and spend their summer holidays completing a project to benefit their community.

Over the years we have seen some really innovative and creative projects. We have had lifestyle teams renovate public spaces, raise awareness of medical campaigns, decorate children’s hospital wards, donate care packages to those in need and many other imaginative ventures.

There are a host of fantastic prizes on offer for the most inventive and successful projects undertaken. These include: a week in South Africa, a trip to Disneyland Paris, UK adventure holidays, days out at Flamingo Land and Tockwith Racecourse and many more.

A number of local young people from the Goole area along with over 100 other young people from across the Humberside Police area recently took part in a 13-mile trek in Humberside Police’s Night Challenge. This year’s event focused on knife crime and child criminal exploitation and the associated risks.

Participants learned how their actions online can put them in danger and how to spot the signs of friends that may be at risk of child sexual exploitation.

Sergeant David Lonsdale said: “Night Challenge is back for another year and what an event it is set to be. Our community safety team have been working tirelessly, along with various other agencies and volunteers, to make sure that this year is just as successful as previous years.

Our youth engagement projects promote positive lifestyle choices and help those that take part discover new talents and skills, giving them the confidence to get involved in their local communities. Through the projects, we are able to teach young people about the police service, building trust so that they know that we will be there for them if they ever need us.

Local ten-year-old given lead role in ‘Annie’ Gracie Caley will play the role in front of an audience of over a thousand at the Goole Academy, with last year’s show selling out almost immediately.

quite challenging, which I look forward to tackling. I got the call whilst on holiday saying I had the part of Annie and I was totally speechless! I was also so happy for my friend Grace Smith, who also got the understudy; it’s lovely to experience this with friends.”

Mother of Gracie, Lisa, told us how her daughter has always loved singing and drama since two-years-old, so it was no surprise to her when Gracie received the call.

“I am really proud of her. The auditions even made me feel nervous, so for a ten-year-old to pull it off as confidently as she did was incredible as a mum to see her go through!

She amazes me with how much determination she shows towards practising and how quickly she can pick up the lines and songs.”

Despite this being Gracie’s first

big lead role in a musical, Lisa is confident that it won’t be the last time she steps onto the stage.

“Gracie really hopes to be in the theatre when she is older; she often talks about how much she would love to be in a West End show. We have seen many musicals together and she aspires to be up there one day.

I think she has definitely found her calling with acting, so obviously I am delighted to see her be given such a fantastic opportunity.”

Following the success of last year’s show (Whistle Down the Wind), tickets are expected to once again sell out. The show runs from Tuesday 29th October through to Saturday 2nd November with a matinee on Saturday. Tickets for the event can be purchased from Junction, Goole, and will be available soon.

Gracie is excited that rehearsals are drawing near, involving a cast of around 60 adults and children.

“I think I will feel nervous as I feature in different parts of the show, but I am certainly looking forward to it. It’s going to be amazing, I can’t wait!”

Our very own Marketing Executive, Lisa Caley, was lucky enough to be given a free family ticket, so she could take her young kids down to the popular den.

Lisa was very impressed with all it had to offer, including the facilities for parents. A relaxed atmosphere with an open floor design plan, kids were not restricted to space and were free to roam without ever having to consider their safety.

“The large outdoor play area was a breath of fresh air, and we were impressed by the creativity of the activities on offer for the kids. It encouraged kids to use their initiative and build as they wished, which was great for the young ones if they wanted to get hands on.”

“William’s Den also offered a large sand pit which was very popular, and again, a fantastic place for kids to get creative using the equipment provided.

With a healthy balance of indoor and outdoor activities, there is certainly the best of both worlds at the venue.”

No More Section 21s You may have read in the news that the end of the “no fault eviction” is soon to be upon us. It is likely that this may well give some investors cause for concern.

In fact a plan is being drawn up to expand the more complex Section 8 procedure making eviction no more difficult in cases when it is clearly necessary.

The new Section 8 legislation will form part of an intended review of the private

rented sector and streamline the process for landlords wanting to gain possession of property, as long as they have a valid reason to do so. This leads to the question: What is the point then?

There has also been a consultation regarding the length of tenancy agreements; it has been concluded that the current Assured Shorthold Tenancy suits most tenants and landlords alike, proving that it is also better left alone.

by Citizens Advice that covers all you need to know about the new scheme

Citizens Advice ‘Help to Claim’ service Help to Claim is a new service provided by Citizens Advice that offers claimants the tailored and practical support they need from making their Universal Credit (UC) claim until the first full correct payment is made, using the most appropriate channels The service is available to anyone who requires support to make a new Universal Credit claim or to anyone moving from another benefit onto Universal Credit following a change of circumstances.

Help to Claim is voluntary and can be accessed any time until the first full correct payment of UC is made.

The service is available to access either online, over the phone or face to face through a local Citizens Advice Service.

Once contacted, Citizens Advice will start by assessing a claimant’s individual needs/ circumstances and checking that Universal Credit is the right benefit to claim.

To make sure the claimant can get access to the right level of support, in a way that is right for them, support can be delivered in three ways. Either face to face, telephone or web chat.
