The sun is shining, the beer gardens are calling, and summer is on its way.

This month, we announce the winners of this year’s Goole and Howdenshire Business Excellence awards. We (Our Goole) are proud to have been the winner in the Contribution to the Community Business category. A huge congratulations to all the winners, it’s such a great event that brings so many brilliant local businesses together to celebrate

everyone’s success and we cannot wait for next year’s already.

The Kings Arms is a traditional pub in both look and feel with two separate trading areas. Historically, the Publicans have used them as a games room and lounge serviced by a central bar.

Picnic in the Park 2024

Why not head down to West Park, Goole, on Sunday 2nd June to enjoy a fun-filled day with the local community and help raise funds for The Pulmonary

Fibrosis Trust

Picnic in the Park has been running for eight years it was originally set up by former organiser, Jessica Sharp, who organised this event in memory of her Uncle Pip.

We had a chat with Nicola Lovejoy-Waud who is now involved with organising the event to find out more.

What made you want to take over Picnic in the Park?

To raise awareness of pulmonary fibrosis and raise vital funds for The Pulmonary Fibrosis Trust.

My wife, Jo, was diagnosed with pulmonary fibrosis in May 2022 and has declined since then. In 2023, the organisers of Picnic in the Park appealed for volunteers to help with planning the event; how could I not support this? Jo

and I became involved in the event and had the Pulmonary Fibrosis Trust stall that year. This year the original organiser, Jessica Sharp, has had a baby so the organising of the event has now been handed over to myself, Jessica Harvey and Abbie Booth. This event will go ahead every year. It’s such a worthwhile event and one which is well supported by the Goole community.

What is involved on the day?

We have live bands on the bandstand throughout the day including Cupid Stunts, Tea Band, Orion Stars, Fozzy, Offbeat and Orban Rift as well as fairground rides for

the kids supplied by Harvey’s Funfairs. There will also be a sign language teacher teaching the visitors to sign a couple of songs as well as a choice of popular food outlets based in the community including Two Tossers Pizza Van and Tipsy Cow Trailer.

West Park Café will also be open throughout the event and there will be approximately 30 stalls held by local businesses and other charities selling a variety of different items.

Pulmonary Fibrosis Trust will have a stall accepting cash donations, selling merchandise and raffle tickets - they provide personal support to people affected by pulmonary fibrosis,

a very debilitating and life-limiting illness. It offers practical, emotional and financial support, and also

raise awareness of the illness and, in particular, the challenges people face on a daily basis.

So, keep your diary free for Sunday 2nd June and lets all help raise money for the Pulmonary Fibrosis Trust.

Be alert to ticket fraud ahead

Many festival and concert goers will be looking to get last-minute tickets to this summer’s top events, however, Goole Policing team is now urging people to be on their guard against fraudulent sellers, as new data reveals £6.7 million was lost to ticket fraud last year

“There are so many great gigs and festivals happening throughout the UK this summer, but sadly there are fraudsters waiting to ride on the back of public excitement about those events by ripping off ticket buyers. Consumers can avoid disappointment and loss by following Action Fraud’s advice.”

POLICE PERSPECTIVE:

Action Fraud, the national fraud and cybercrime reporting service, has launched a ticket fraud awareness campaign, warning people to be alert to fraudsters trying to catch out people planning to go to popular and sold-out events.

Last year more than 8,700 people reported they had been a victim of ticket fraud, with a total of £6.7 million lost. This works out to an average loss of £772 per victim.

In the Humberside Police area alone, the total reported losses come in at £47,390.35, with only 69 reports being made last year.

The warning comes ahead of the Glastonbury Festival ticket resale and before top summer events such as Taylor Swift’s sell-out Eras tour.

Pauline Smith, Head of Action Fraud, said: “We all want to enjoy ticketed events this summer, but that doesn’t stop fraudsters from taking the fun out things we look forward to doing. Too many people are losing out to fraudulent activity or genuine-looking phishing messages.

“Make sure you don’t get ticked off – recognise the signs of ticket fraud before getting caught out. Remember to be wary of unsolicited messages offering deals too good to be true.”

Of the reports made to Action Fraud last year, 34 per cent of reports (2,993) mentioned concert tickets, 29 per cent of reports (2,523) mentioned travel and 18 per cent of reports (1,561) mentioned sporting events.

Jonathan Brown, Chief Executive of Society of Ticket Agents and Retailers, said:

“Buying from a STAR member means you are buying from

an authorised ticket supplier signed up to our strict code of practice. While we hope you never have to use it, this also gets you access to our approved Alternative Dispute Resolution service.

“There are so many great gigs and festivals happening throughout the UK this summer, but sadly there are fraudsters waiting to ride on the back of public excitement about those events by ripping off ticket buyers. Consumers can avoid disappointment and loss by following Action Fraud’s advice about how to buy tickets safely and taking the right steps to protect themselves.” Fraudsters often create fake ticket retail companies. Victims are lured in using social media or phishing emails with offers of the chance to buy tickets to a popular event, but instead give away their personal information or money, with no tickets received in return. Phishing messages often look real, but instead will either steal your information or divert to malicious websites which can infect your computer with malware.

My advice from working in the industry for 20 years is this - avoid cheap, the service is always terrible. Such agents have to take on lots of instructions just to break even and the
