First patient undergoes X-ray in new facilities

The first patient to be seen in the new state-of-the-art X-ray room at Goole and District Hospital says the new set-up is ‘top class’

Building work started in February, and the first patient, Katie Frith, 24, from Howden, underwent a chest X-ray on the 6th April.

The new digital X-ray equipment has been installed in the hospital and one of the two X-ray Page 6

rooms on site has been fully refurbished thanks to a £330,000 cash injection of capital funding.

Katie is now a teacher but was formerly a nurse and spent some of her time training at the hospital. She said: “Having been in for an X-ray before I can see the new facilities are much improved, and this is great news for Goole. I found the environment to be airy and light and a friendly space

that really puts you at ease as a patient.”

Katie, who was also presented with flowers in recognition of her being the first patient to undergo an X-ray, recognised the radiographer, Dianne, as she has X-rayed her before!

The new technology not only speeds up examinations with staff able to see the images on screen instantly, but they are also of a much higher quality too. It means the whole process from scan to diagnosis

is more efficient for patients and they are also subject to lower levels of radiation.

Approximately 650 patients will be using the new X-ray room each month so the investment was certainly needed and hopefully will make X-rays run as smooth as possible in the hospital. As well as the digital X-ray machine being installed, the whole room has had a refurbishment with new flooring, lighting and screens installed.

Keiley Somers, head of general radiology for Goole, said: “We are absolutely delighted that we are now able to offer Goole patients access to digital X-ray technology, which is the gold standard for general imaging, in what is a bright and welcoming environment.

“The new facilities really are first class and are a big improvement for both the staff working here and the patients coming in for X-rays.”

Catalytic converter thefts - how you can protect your vehicle.

We are warning motorists to be on their guard following a number of reports in the last month of catalytic converters being stolen in our areas (Goole, Pocklington and North Cave).

While all cars are potentially at risk, thieves are most likely to target hybrids, where the catalytic converter is used less and the metals are less likely to be damaged, or vehicles with a higher ground clearance, such as vans and SUVs. We are investigating all the reports we have received and are following up a number of lines of enquiry. In the meantime, we want to help prevent further thefts from occurring, so please pass on our advice to anyone you think may be at risk and, if you see anyone acting suspiciously, please call us on our non-emergency 101 line.

Here are some of the steps you can take to protect your vehicle: Speak to your local garage about having suitable locks or guards fitted. They can also advise you on getting your catalytic converter security marked to make it harder for thieves to dispose of.

Park your car in a locked garage where possible.

If that isn’t an option, park in a well lit and busy area.

Park with your exhaust close to walls, fences or high kerbs, which will make it harder to access.

Catalytic converters are at the front of your vehicle, so park facing walls or other vehicles where possible. If that isn’t an option, park in a well lit and busy area.

Covid-19 Vaccine Text Scam Alert We have been alerted to a highly believable scam which starts with a text and advises the user that they are eligible to apply for the vaccine and to click on the link in the text message. The user is then led to a webpage, which looks very convincing and asks them to complete some details, in order for them to be able to apply for the vaccine.

The details asked for are name, address, date of birth, proof of address and card payment details.

With the recent approval of multiple vaccines in the UK, these types of scam attempts are likely to continue, as fraudsters continue to take advantage of the roll out to many people.

Goole-based animal photographer raising money for rescue dogs around the world Tom S-N is an animal portrait photographer in Goole and a huge advocate for dogs around the world. The majority of his time is spent helping dog shelters throughout the Balkans countries and further afield Whether it’s a studio or outdoor session, you can guarantee great results every time!

Photographing over 300 dogs in the 2019, Tom then grew a huge following of almost 8,000 people on Facebook off the back of his amazing imagery which is obviously hugely popular as we all love to show off our pups!

Tom, with the support of his partner Sarah, is currently in the early stages of building a Sanctuary in Bulgaria, to bring together rescue dogs, ex-military veterans, and retired police officers, with PTSD who are in need of help and to start them on a journey of healing..

This month Jobcentre Goole talks to us about how Humber LEP is encouraging businesses and individuals to embrace the Mid-Life MOT through its new website and events

Mid-Life MOT

A new resource designed to help those aged 45+ make empowered choices about their future working lives and retirement plans has been unveiled by the Humber Local Enterprise Partnership (LEP) The LEP is in one of 10 areas to pilot the scheme and is focused on supporting individuals with their future and support employers with an ageing workforce to take positive steps.

The recent economic downturn makes this support more important than ever for those in midlife – such as job searching in an uncertain market, caring for aging parents, or needing to change their work/life balance.

The new tool invites individuals to look at not just their finances, but also their health, wellbeing and skillset. It encourages employers to support those aged 45+ in areas such as flexible working, pension evaluation and ensuring they are an ‘agefriendly’ employer.

As part of this programme, the LEP, in conjunction with

local partners at the National Careers Service, Money & Pension Service, Public Health England and Active Humber, have developed and published a one-stop shop online platform, containing free services and tools for individuals and employers.

The platform highlights and redirects individuals and employers to existing tools and services, which offer key advice and lead the way to activities and simple steps individuals can take to make important changes they may have been putting off.

Businesses are invited to take part in workshops led

by Humber HR People which will discuss how to attract and hire hardworking, committed employees.

Stephen Parnaby, Chair of the Humber LEP, said: “Employment prospects for the over-50s have been

behind other age groups for several years now, but Covid 19 has brought this issue into sharp focus, which has highlighted the need for people to reconsider a career in a new sector, or whether they might like to look at either upskilling or re-skilling.

“Through supporting those in mid-life to re-evaluate their work, health and finances, explore re-skilling and flexible working, consider ways of maintaining and improving health and review pension prospects, the Mid-Life MOT programme will help create a resilient and skilled futuredirected work-force”.
