Hello and a big welcome to your March edition of Our Goole.

Spring is just around the corner, and those nights are getting lighter. Did you know that by the end of the month, the sun will be setting after 8pm? That is certainly something to look forward to!

This month, we announce the finalists at this year’s Goole & Howdenshire Business Excellence Awards and we are delighted that Our Goole, is nominated in the category ‘Hugh Walton Contribution to the Community Award - Business’.

As always, we will keep you up to date with the latest from the awards and good luck to all who have been shortlisted.

We also spoke to Stacey Duffy who is set to run the TCS London Marathon to raise money for The Brain Tumour Charity after been diagnosed with Optic Nerve Meningioma.

the London Marathon to raise for The Brain Tumour Charity

Stacey Duffy from Goole is preparing to run the TCS London Marathon in April after been diagnosed with Optic Nerve Meningioma

On 21 April 2024, Stacey Duffy, 46, from Goole will be raising vital funds for The Brain Tumour Charity, the UK’s leading charity dedicated to fighting this devastating disease, by running the TCS London Marathon.

Stacey had surgery to remove a brain tumour in 2021 after starting to experience headaches, feeling tired and having a sensation like she had grit in her eye. It will be her first time doing this giant task, and even though she hasn’t set a time limit she is hoping to complete within 6 to 6 hours 30mins.

Stacey sold Our Goole: “I am really looking forward to taking part for such an important cause. Going through something like this really makes you rethink what’s important. I also haven’t felt like ‘me’ for a long time so doing The London Marathon has given me the determination to find myself again.

“This Charity is close to my heart, they have helped and supported me after been diagnosed with an Optic Nerve Meningioma and even after

a craniotomy and an optic nerve decompression my little passenger remains.

“I have now lost all the sight in my right eye following the procedure, but I am determined to do this. And hopefully with all your help and support I hope to do the charity proud.”

Stacey is aiming to raise £2,700 for The Brain Tumour Charity through her online fundraising page. She is currently in training five times a week which includes the 5k Parkrun at West Park in Goole.

Gina Almond, the charity’s director of fundraising, said: “We are extremely grateful for all the efforts made by our fantastic fundraisers and wish them all the very best. Brain tumours are the biggest cancer killer of the under 40s and, unlike other cancers, survival rates have not improved over the last 40 years.

“It’s through the efforts of people like Stacey that we can change these shocking statistics in the future and bring hope to the thousands of people who are diagnosed with a brain tumour every year.”

What is it like to be a Special Superintendent?

This month, Goole Policing Team talks to Special Superintendent Joseph Broderick to find out more about why he finds the role super special!

“It’s a job like no other – you’re going to see the best of society, and the worst, but you’re out there making a difference in the community. Helping people day in and day out. It’s such a unique position to be in.”

Special Superintendent Joseph Broderick joined our Special Constabulary 11 years ago. His original plan was to volunteer with us as a Special Constable first before joining as a regular, paid officer.

A lot of our officers start their policing journey with us this way; it’s seen as a brilliant way to get a reallife insight into what is an extremely privileged and unique career.

However, after experiencing life as a volunteer police officer, a lot of people also end up deciding that becoming a career Special is the perfect pathway for them instead.

And that’s exactly what Joe has done, working his way up the Special Constabulary ranks to Superintendent, whilst simultaneously developing his career as a Digital Forensic Technician here at Humberside Police.

He said: “At the time of when I joined, becoming a Special Constable felt like the next best thing whilst I waited for an opening to become a paid police officer.

“However, as my life progressed, and as I started to understand how the force worked and get comfortable in my role, I realised I was finding the work of a Special Constable to be really rewarding. It fitted in well with family life, managing childcare, and working my shifts around my own life.

“I’ve worked my way up and I’m now a Superintendent responsible for all the Special Constables across the Southbank.

“As Superintendent, I look after everyone and make sure everyone’s working efficiently, and have the tools

they need to be a successful Special Constable.

“If a member of the public saw an officer in the street, you wouldn’t know if they are a paid officer or volunteer officer when we’re attending the same incidents. We all deal with the same people, often people at their most vulnerable. We face the same dangers, and we must remain calm and professional, just like our paid colleagues.

“It’s a job like no other – you’re going to see the best of society, and the worst, but you’re out there making a difference in the community. Helping people day in and day out. It’s such a unique position to be in.

“Another good thing about being a Special is there are no minimum qualifications! You get the full training needed to get your independent status, and there’s also a mentoring scheme in place, so the support we receive is substantial, even though we’re not doing as many hours as our paid colleagues.

“You’re continually learning on the job and that’s why people should jump at this chance to become part of the force, and part of the police family.

“I’ve been doing this for 11 years and still love it as much as I did when I first started. Every day I can see I’m making a difference to my local communities, I’m helping safeguard vulnerable people, and victims of crime. I’m out there proactively patrolling our communities and it’s just so satisfying.”

We can all face problems that seem complicated or intimidating. At Citizens Advice they believe no one should have to face these without good quality, independent advice.

They can advise on housing related issues such as dealing with repairs in rented accommodation or supporting those at threat of eviction. They provide tailored and specific benefits advice to ensure that

those most in need are in receipt of everything they are eligible for. They have specialist debt caseworkers who can support people to either make their repayments work for them or to become completely debt free.

They also regularly support people with employment queries which range from disputes over pay to helping those who have found themselves out of work to find a way forward.

They see how problems can be linked. By helping people with the underlying cause of their problems and making sure they don’t get worse, they save the government and public services hundreds of millions of pounds every year.

In total, Citizens Advice Hull and East Riding help over 24,000 people a year find a way forward with one-to-one advice, with their advice website having over 60 million views of their online

self-help advice. They have an incredible team of dedicated volunteers along with specialists in debt, welfare benefits and energy.

Citizens Advice Goole offers a drop-in service every Wednesday and pre-booked appointments on a Monday.
