Household Support Fund reopens for applications in the East Riding

As winter tightens its grip, residents in the East Riding on low incomes are being urged to check whether they are eligible for help with food and energy bills from the latest Household Support Fund payments Applications to the Fund have reopened, and payments of £350 are available to help those on low incomes or unpaid carers facing increasing energy and food bills. The payments are available to anybody in the East Riding who is eligible and who has not previously received a payment.

Those eligible will receive a payment of £350 within 20 days of making an application.

East Riding of Yorkshire Council was awarded £4.1million in the latest round of the Household Support Fund from the Department for Work and Pensions to support local residents struggling during the current cost-of-living crisis.

Councillor Anne Handley, leader of the council, said:

“Many families and others on a low income in the East Riding are having an extremely tough time making ends meet during the cost-of-living crisis. As winter draws in and with colder weather, things can get hard for many families.

“We hope this money through the Household Support Fund will make a difference.

“These payments are available now to those in need and I’d urge people

to check if they are eligible and apply online, as this money is there to help.”

FROM A POLICE Police dog Toby retires As police dog Toby retires, this month Goole Policing team takes a look back at his career with Humberside Police

He was never a tidy dog, he loved to find some water or mud to lay in even on the hottest days.”

E PERSPECTIVE: Born in 2017, Toby was chosen from a litter of eight Springer Spaniels by his dog handler Steve Matthews to join the force as a new drugs, cash, and firearms detection dog.

PC Matthews prepped Toby to be ready for when a course became available. Toby was coincidentally trained on a course in Humberside and was the only dog to successfully pass his course. He went on to be the sole drugs dog within Humberside Police for several years.

Toby loved to travel around the force, meeting new people and being fussed over. He was nothing short of brave and fearless during his career.

PC Steve Matthews from the specialist dog section said: “Toby has had a huge number of highlights throughout his policing years, and there are so many stories I could tell about his career in which he has been exceptional.

“One memorable moment was when we were asked to search for a handgun after a firearms deployment. As I was speaking to the officer on the case, Toby began jumping up at a kitchen drawer.

I opened the drawer and there it was.

“Another investigation Toby was a part of was a week-long operation. Toby was given the task to search the house for cash. I went to the bedroom with Toby, and within a few minutes he had already nudged a drawer completely open and jumped in to sniff all the rolled-up socks. He picked up two and nudged them towards me.

“The officer searching with us joked that Toby just wanted us to play with the socks, but I knew him better than that. Inside was thousands of pounds rolled up into each. The other officer began excitedly looking at all the other socks in the drawer – none of the others had any cash in.

“There was also one day when I took him for a walk and placed a tennis ball on to the car roof, I turned my back for a split second and Toby had jumped from the side of the car on to the roof to get the ball! He never stopped jumping on to car roofs after this, to check if a ball was there.

“Toby loved every single minute he spent working with the force. He was never a tidy dog, he loved to find some water or mud to lay in even on the hottest days. If he saw a bush, he had to jump in it and if he saw a table, he had to jump on it.

“Toby was amazing at his job, he could always find drugs, cash or firearms. I miss working with him hugely, he’s the second dog I’ve retired and it never gets easier but I know it is what is best for him.

“Toby has gone to live with another officer’s parents – the separation when I would leave for work was too much for him. I would have kept Toby forever and worked with him every single day if I could have done.”

Toby officially retired in November, at the same time as his brother, Milo.

Everyone from Humberside Police wishes him a happy retirement, and thanks him for his years of dedicated service.
